What is Pylons?

3 parts

Pylons is a small "just another magic block" mod. Each pylon does one utility job, and none of them is a big progression gate. This pack ships Pylons 5.2.1 for Minecraft 1.21.1, and the mod has been in the pack since version 2.2 or earlier.[1][2]

What the pylons do

  • Harvester Pylon: harvests crops in a configurable radius from 3x3 to 9x9 and outputs them to an inventory above it. You place it inside the water block of the farm. By default it needs a hoe in its inventory and uses 1 durability per crop harvested.[1]
  • Infusion Pylon: applies effects to you from any distance, though it may require chunkloading. It works with Potion Filters that you activate by right-clicking them while you have the effect.[1]
  • Interdiction Pylon: stops all spawns of the mobs you choose within a chunk range from 1x1 to 5x5. Right-click a mob with a Mob Filter, then put the filter in the pylon.[1]
  • Expulsion Pylon: made for servers. It expels other players from the chunk it sits in. You can whitelist players with a Player Filter, and OPs are always whitelisted.[1]

Who it is for

If you run a farm, the Harvester Pylon automates it. If you build a mob-free base, the Interdiction Pylon helps. The Infusion Pylon suits anyone who wants a permanent potion effect. The Expulsion Pylon is mostly for server admins and players on multiplayer worlds.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack gives Pylons its own quest chapter. The filters come first: a quest in "?" for the Mob Filter, a quest in "?" for the Potion Filter, a quest in "?" for the Player Filter and a quest in "?" for the Lifeless Filter. The pylon quests come after them: a quest in "?" for the Harvester, a quest in "?" for the Infusion, a quest in "?" for the Expulsion and a quest in "?" for the Interdiction Pylon. Each pylon quest also needs one more quest completed, and a couple of them need a second one as well.[3]

How do you get started with Pylons?

4 parts

Pylons is a magic-block mod, and each of its four pylons can be toggled automatically with redstone. In this pack the filters are what unlock most of the pylons, so the sensible order is the Harvester Pylon first, then each filter with the pylon that uses it.[1][3][4]

Step 1: Harvester Pylon

The Harvester Pylon needs a hoe rather than a filter by default, so you can start with it right away. It harvests crops in a radius from 3x3 to 9x9 blocks around it and outputs into an inventory above it. Place it inside the water block of your farm, or level with the crops.[1][4]

This is the mod's own recipe, and the pack leaves it unchanged.

By default (this is configurable) the pylon needs a hoe inside it and uses 1 durability per harvest, unless the hoe is unbreakable. It can also be configured to need power instead. The pack has a quest for this pylon: a quest in "?".[3][4]

Step 2: Potion Filter and Infusion Pylon

Next, craft a Potion Filter. The filter has its own quest, a quest in "?", and the Infusion Pylon quest a quest in "?" comes after it in the quest book.[3]

The Infusion Pylon lets you apply effects to yourself from any distance. To activate a filter, apply a potion effect to yourself, then right-click with the filter in hand to extract it. By default (configurable) the minimum duration that can be extracted is 60 seconds, and the filter needs 1 hour of duration to activate. You can combine duplicate filters by holding one in each hand and right-clicking.[1][4]

Step 3: Mob Filter and Interdiction Pylon

The Interdiction Pylon stops spawns of the mobs you choose within a range of 1x1 to 5x5 chunks. Right-click a mob with a Mob Filter to select it, then put the filter into the pylon. The quests are a quest in "?" for the filter and a quest in "?" for the pylon.[1][3][4]

The Lifeless Filter works differently. It blocks only natural spawns, but for all mobs, and it raises the range to 25x25 chunks. It also disables other mob filters. The Interdiction Pylon quest comes after both the Mob Filter quest and the Lifeless Filter quest, a quest in "?".[3][4]

Optional: Expulsion Pylon

The Expulsion Pylon is mainly for servers. It expels other players from a chunk range of 1x1 to 5x5, and you can whitelist players with a Player Filter. OPs are always whitelisted. Its quests are a quest in "?" for the filter and a quest in "?" for the pylon.[1][3][4]

How does Pylons work?

6 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.14 guide

The mod currently adds the Expulsion, Infusion, Harvester and Interdiction pylons. Here is how each one works in this pack, with the values the pack changed called out.[1]

Expulsion Pylon

The Expulsion Pylon kicks other players out of a chunk range you choose, from 1x1 up to 5x5 chunks. It's mainly meant for servers. Put a Player Filter in it to whitelist players. OPs are always whitelisted. You can also toggle the pylon with redstone.[1][4]

Team members are whitelisted automatically when team support is on. The pack has general.teamSupportEnabled set to true, but it only has an effect if a compatible mod such as FTB Teams or Argonauts is installed.[4][6]

The pack changed this recipe.

Harvester Pylon

The Harvester Pylon harvests crops in a radius from 3x3 to 9x9 blocks around itself and outputs them to an inventory above it. Place it inside the water block of your farm, or level with the crops. Redstone can toggle it.[1][4]

In this pack it needs a hoe inside the pylon, because harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresTool is true. Each harvest costs 1 durability unless the hoe is unbreakable, and Unbreaking and other durability enchants are supported.[4][6]

The pack changed harvester_pylon.harvesterWorkDelay to 20 ticks between harvest attempts. The mod default is 60, so this pylon works more often than in the base mod.[6]

Power and automation

harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresPower is false in this pack, so the harvester runs on hoe durability, not energy. If you turned it on, the tool requirement would be disabled and each harvested block would cost RF. The cost is set by harvester_pylon.harvesterPowerCost, which is 5 here, and the buffer by harvester_pylon.harvesterPowerBuffer, which is 1,000. The config notes say the buffer should be greater than the cost per block times 80.[4][6]

harvester_pylon.harvesterCanBeAutomated is false, so you can't pipe tools into the harvester here. The config notes say unbreakable tools are required for full automation by default. Mystical Agriculture's Supremium Hoe is mentioned as an example of an unbreakable hoe.[1][6]

Infusion Pylon

The Infusion Pylon applies potion effects to you from any distance, using activated Potion Filter items. Redstone can toggle it.[1][4]

  1. Apply a potion effect to yourself, for example by drinking a potion.[4]
  2. Right-click with a Potion Filter in hand to extract the effect. By default the minimum duration that can be extracted is 60 seconds, set by infusion_pylon.infusionMinimumDuration.[4][6]
  3. Keep extracting with the same effect until the filter reaches the required 3,600 seconds (1 hour). That is the same as 7.5 vanilla extended potions.[4][6]
  4. Put the finished filter in the pylon.[4]

Duplicate Potion Filters can be combined by holding one in each hand and right-clicking.[4]

While the pylon is running, it applies the effect for up to 20 seconds at a time. That duration is topped up every 60 ticks, as set by infusion_pylon.infusionAppliedDuration. infusion_pylon.infusionMaximumPotency is 3 and counts from 0, so Resistance V would be potency 4 and is above the limit.[6]

infusion_pylon.infusionChunkloads is true, so the pylon loads its own chunk. This is limited to one pylon per player, and only while that player is online.[4][6]

The pack leaves infusion_pylon.infusionAllowedEffects empty, which allows every effect except the ones in infusion_pylon.infusionDeniedEffects. The denied list overrides the allowed list. Blocked effects are marked in their tooltip as disabled in the config. These are denied in this pack:[4][6]

  • tombstone:ghostly_shape[6]
  • irons_spellbooks:heartstop, irons_spellbooks:evasion and irons_spellbooks:abyssal_shroud[6]

Interdiction Pylon

The Interdiction Pylon stops natural and forced spawns of the mobs you specify within a chunk range of 1x1 to 5x5. Right-click a mob with a Mob Filter to select it, then put the filter in the pylon. Redstone can toggle it.[1][4]

A Lifeless Filter works differently. It blocks all mobs, but only natural spawns, over a much larger range of 25x25 chunks. It also disables any other mob filters in the pylon.[4][7]

Filters are what you use to configure the pylons. Right-click a player with a Player Filter to select them. Right-click a mob with a Mob Filter to select it. Potion Filters store effect duration, as described above. This pack also has shapeless clear recipes for the Mob, Player and Potion Filters.[4][7]

How do you progress through Pylons?

3 parts

Pylons progression in this pack is simple: you craft filters first, then move on to the pylons. The pack's quest chapter for the mod follows that order, so you can use it as a checklist.[3]

Tier 1: the filters

The chapter starts with four filter quests, and none of them lists a prerequisite. Each one asks you to get a filter in your inventory: Potion Filter for a quest in "?", Player Filter for a quest in "?", Mob Filter for a quest in "?", and Lifeless Filter for a quest in "?".[3]

All four filter recipes are the mod's own, and the pack has not changed them. Here is how each one is crafted.[5]

There are also shapeless "clear" recipes that take a Mob Filter, a Player Filter or a Potion Filter and give you the same filter back.[5]

Tier 2: the pylons

Each pylon quest in the chapter asks you to obtain the pylon item. Each also depends on a quest that this chapter's listing doesn't show, 30B0240543253EFB, plus other quests listed below. Finish the matching filter quests first and you won't get stuck.[3]

What the pack changed

The pack has changed the recipes for the Infusion Pylon, the Expulsion Pylon and the Interdiction Pylon, so don't rely on the mod's default recipes for them. The Harvester Pylon keeps the mod's own recipe. These are the in-pack recipes.[5]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Pylons?

2 parts

Pylons has one quest chapter in this pack, called "pylons". Every quest in it asks you to obtain an item, and none of them has a title in the quest data, so this page identifies them by the item they ask for.[3]

The filter quests

The filter quests have no prerequisites, so you can start on any of them right away. Each one wants a different filter.[3]

The pylon quests

The remaining quests ask for the pylons themselves. Each of them lists a prerequisite quest that is not part of the filter quests above, and most also depend on one or more of the filter quests.[3]

Tip: Do the filter quests first. The infusion, expulsion and interdiction pylon quests each depend on at least one of them, so have the matching filter in hand before you go for the pylon.[3]

Which Pylons config options matter?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

The Pylons options all live in the server config file, config/pylons-server.toml. Here is how the pack sets the ones you are most likely to touch. The only value the file marks as changed from the mod default is the Harvester Pylon's work delay, so I start with that one.[8]

The one value the pack changed

harvester_pylon.harvesterWorkDelay is set to 20 ticks in this pack. The mod default is 60, so the Harvester Pylon waits much less between harvest attempts than in a stock install. The allowed range is 10 to 120.[8]

Harvester Pylon

Infusion Pylon

Expulsion Pylon

Teams

general.teamSupportEnabled is true. Team support is active whenever a compatible mod (FTB Teams or Argonauts) is installed.[8]

What changed in Pylons between versions?

The sources I have for this mod are thin, so this section is short. Pylons has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 2.2 or earlier, and All the Mods 4.5 ships version 5.2.1 of the mod for Minecraft 1.21.1.[2]

  • All the Mods 10 2.2 or earlier: Pylons was first included in the pack. The exact version at that point isn't stated in the sources.[2]
  • All the Mods 10 3.2: Pylons was updated from 5.1.1 to 5.2.1.[9]
  • All the Mods 10 4.5: Pylons is still at 5.2.1, so it hasn't changed since the 3.2 update.[2]

Unverified What actually changed inside Pylons between 5.1.1 and 5.2.1 (new features, fixes or balance changes) can't be confirmed, because there are no stored changelogs for the shipped jars. Check the mod's own release notes if you want the details.
