What is Pylons?
2 parts
Pylons is a small mod that adds a handful of utility blocks, each doing one job from a distance or over a set area. This pack includes version 5.4.2, and it has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier.[1][2]
What the pylons do
- Expulsion Pylon: pushes players who aren't whitelisted out of the chunks around it. You whitelist friends with a Player Filter. The quest book says the area is set in its GUI as 1x1, 3x3 or 5x5 chunks.[1][3]
- Infusion Pylon: gives you potion effects from a distance using charged Potion Filter items. The quest book compares it to a Beacon that works while you're in the set chunk area.[1][3]
- Harvester Pylon: a simple auto-farm that harvests crops in a 3x3 to 9x9 area and outputs to an inventory above it. It needs a hoe to work.[1][3]
- Interdiction Pylon: blocks mob spawns in a chunk range from 1x1 to 5x5. You pick the mobs with Mob Filter items, or use the Lifeless Filter to block every spawn.[1][3]
- Protection Pylon: stops you from accidentally destroying chosen mobs or blocks in the selected chunk radius, using Mob Filters and Block Filter items.[3]
Where it sits in the quest book
The pack has a dedicated "Pylons" chapter with 13 quests. It opens with the "Pylons" quest quest, which asks for Polished Blackstone to get you started. One of the 13 is a hidden, untitled editing-mode quest, so you won't see it in normal play.[3]
The filter quests come next: a quest in "Pylons", a quest in "Pylons", a quest in "Pylons", a quest in "Pylons" and a quest in "Pylons". There is also an untitled quest about the hoe the Harvester Pylon needs.[3]
The pylon quests follow, each after the filters it uses:[3]
- a quest in "Pylons" comes after the intro quest and the hoe quest.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons" comes after the Potion Filter quest.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons" comes after the Player Filter quest.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons" comes after the Mob Filter and Block Filter quests.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons" comes after the Mob Filter and Lifeless Filter quests.[3]
This pack's quest book does not put Pylons on the ATM Star path, so you can treat the chapter as optional quality-of-life content.[3]
How do you get started with Pylons?
5 parts
Pylons adds a handful of very useful blocks, and the pack's quest book gives it its own chapter. The opening quest, "Pylons" quest, sends you to collect Polished Blackstone, because it is the base of every pylon recipe. Here is a sensible order to work through them.[3][4]
Harvester Pylon: an easy farm
Start with the Harvester Pylon. It is a simple auto-farm that harvests and replants fully grown crops around itself, so it pays off straight away. Its quest, a quest in "Pylons", comes after the chapter intro and a short quest about the hoe it needs.[3]

Put it on or in the water source of your farm, put a chest or other inventory above it, and give it a hoe. You can set the area to 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 or 9x9 blocks. By default it uses 1 durability per harvest, and a hoe that can't break works forever.[3][5][6]
This pack makes it work faster: harvester_pylon.harvesterWorkDelay is set to 20 ticks, where the mod's default is 60.[6]
Filters and the Protection Pylon
Next, make some filters. A Mob Filter is set by clicking a mob with it, and a Block Filter is set by clicking a block. Each filter holds only one mob or block, so you need one per thing you want covered.[3][5]

Put them in a Protection Pylon and it stops you from accidentally killing those mobs or breaking those blocks in a chunk range of 1x1 to 5x5. The quest book lists it after the Mob Filter and Block Filter quests.[3][5]

Stopping mob spawns
The Interdiction Pylon blocks spawns of the mobs you set with Mob Filters, and you can stack several filters. The Lifeless Filter blocks all natural mob spawns over a much larger range, and it disables the other Mob Filters. In the quest book, a quest in "Pylons" follows the Mob Filter and Lifeless Filter quests. The pack changes the pylon's recipe, so check the one below.[3][4][5]

Infusion Pylon: beacon-style effects
The Infusion Pylon keeps giving you a potion effect while you are in its chunk area. You load effects with a Potion Filter: get the effect on yourself, then right click with the filter to move it in. Duplicate filters can be combined by holding one in each hand and right clicking.[3][5]

A filter needs a total of 3,600 seconds (1 hour) of effect duration before it activates, set by infusion_pylon.infusionRequiredDuration. Each extraction must be at least 60 seconds, set by infusion_pylon.infusionMinimumDuration. Both match the mod defaults.[6]
Some effects are banned in this pack: infusion_pylon.infusionDeniedEffects includes absorption.[6]
Expulsion Pylon: protecting your base
If you play with other people, the Expulsion Pylon keeps non-whitelisted players out of a set number of chunks around it (1x1, 3x3 or 5x5). Whitelist friends by right clicking them with a Player Filter and putting it in the pylon. By default the owner is not expelled. The pack changes this pylon's recipe.[3][4]

This recipe is changed by the pack.
In this pack the pylon only works in the overworld, and expulsion_pylon.expulsionPylonMaxRadius caps it at a radius of 2, which is a 5x5 chunk area.[6]
How does Pylons work?
8 parts
Every pylon in the mod is a single placed block, so there is no multiblock to build and no wiring to do. Each one does its job in an area around itself, you toggle it with redstone, and the ones tied to a player (like the Protection Pylon and Expulsion Pylon) read the owner from whoever placed them. If the owner cannot be found, the pylon shows "Owner not found. Pylon disabled."[5]
Filters are the other half of the system. You craft a filter, load it with a mob, block, player or potion effect, then put it into the matching pylon.[4][5]
Expulsion Pylon
The Expulsion Pylon kicks other players out of a chunk range you choose, from 1x1 up to 5x5 chunks. Add players to its whitelist with a Player Filter. OPs are whitelisted automatically, and so are team members when team support is enabled.[5]
In this pack general.teamSupportEnabled is true, but it only does something if a compatible team mod (FTB Teams or Argonauts) is installed. The max radius is capped by expulsion_pylon.expulsionPylonMaxRadius at 2, which does not count the centre chunk, so 2 means a 5x5 area. That is the mod default.[6]
- Dimensions: expulsion_pylon.expulsionAllowedDimensions lists only the overworld. Elsewhere the pylon tells you "This dimension is disabled."[5][6]
- Explosions: expulsion_pylon.expulsionPylonCanExplode is false, so explosions cannot destroy it.[6]
- World spawn: the pylon will not work too close to world spawn (the GUI says "Too close to world spawn."). expulsion_pylon.expulsionWorldSpawnRadius is 1, and it only takes effect if it is larger than the world spawn radius from the spawnRadius gamerule.[5][6]
Interdiction Pylon
The Interdiction Pylon stops natural and forced spawns of the mobs you specify within a 1x1 to 5x5 chunk range. To pick a mob, right-click it with a Mob Filter, then put the filter into the pylon.[1][5]
The Lifeless Filter works differently. It blocks all mobs but only natural spawns, it raises the range to 25x25 chunks, and it disables other mob filters.[5]
Protection Pylon
The Protection Pylon protects you from yourself. Within a 1x1 to 5x5 chunk range, it prevents the pylon owner from breaking blocks or killing mobs. Choose what is protected with Mob Filters and a Block Filter. For a block filter, right-click the block you want to select.[5]
Harvester Pylon
The Harvester Pylon harvests crops in a 3x3 to 9x9 block area around itself and outputs to an inventory placed above it. Put it inside the farm's water block, or level with the crops. If there is no inventory above, the GUI says "Place inventory above pylon." If that inventory is full, it says "Inventory is full."[1][5]
By default it needs a hoe inside the pylon and uses 1 durability per harvest, unless the hoe is unbreakable. That matches the pack: harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresTool is true.[5][6]
- Speed: the pack changed harvester_pylon.harvesterWorkDelay to 20 ticks between harvest attempts. The mod default is 60.[6]
- Power option: harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresPower is false here. If you turned it on, the tool requirement would be disabled and each harvested block would cost RF instead. harvester_pylon.harvesterPowerCost is 5 RF per block, and harvester_pylon.harvesterPowerBuffer is 1000. The buffer should be greater than the cost per block times 80.[6]
- Automation: harvester_pylon.harvesterCanBeAutomated is true, so tools can be piped in. For full automation you need unbreakable tools.[6]
If something is wrong, the screen tells you: "Hoe required for operation." when the tool is missing, or "Not enough power." when power mode is on and the buffer is short.[5]
Infusion Pylon
The Infusion Pylon applies potion effects to you from any distance, using activated Potion Filter items. It loads its own chunk while you are online. In this pack infusion_pylon.infusionChunkloads is true, limited to one pylon per player.[5][6]
Activating a Potion Filter
- Give yourself the effect you want, for example by drinking a potion.[1]
- Right-click with the Potion Filter in hand. This extracts all the remaining duration from you and stores it on the filter.[1][5]
- Repeat until the filter has enough duration. The tooltip shows progress in seconds. In this pack the minimum you can extract at once is 60 seconds (infusion_pylon.infusionMinimumDuration), and the filter needs 3,600 seconds (1 hour) total (infusion_pylon.infusionRequiredDuration), which is 7.5 vanilla extended potions. Both match the mod defaults.[1][5][6]
Two filters with the same effect can be combined. Hold one in each hand and right-click. The off hand filter's duration is added to the one in your main hand.[1][5]
Limits on effects
- Maximum potency is 3 (infusion_pylon.infusionMaximumPotency). The value is 0-indexed, so a Resistance V potion would be potency 4.[6]
- Applied effects last up to 20 seconds and are refreshed every 60 ticks (infusion_pylon.infusionAppliedDuration).[6]
- infusion_pylon.infusionDeniedEffects blocks minecraft:absorption and tombstone:ghostly_shape, and the denied list overrides the allowed list. infusion_pylon.infusionAllowedEffects is empty, so everything else is allowed. A blocked effect shows "Effect is disabled in the config." in the tooltip.[5][6]
Crafting changes in this pack
The pack changed the recipes for the Expulsion, Infusion and Interdiction Pylons. The Harvester and Protection Pylons and the filters use the mod's own recipes. Here are the changed ones as the pack has them.[4]

How do you progress through Pylons?
2 parts
The Pylons chapter in the quest book is short, and it follows one simple pattern: you make filters first, then the pylons that use them. The pylon quests list the filter quests they come after, so the order below is the order the book gives you.[3]
- Start with the "Pylons" quest quest. It asks for Polished Blackstone, which is what you need to start making pylons.[3]
- Make the filters you want: Mob Filter, Block Filter, Potion Filter, Player Filter and Lifeless Filter.[3]
- Move on to the pylon that matches your filters. The next sections tell you which filter quests come before which pylon.[3]
The filters
Filters are what tell a pylon who or what to care about. Each one has its own quest in the chapter.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons": click a mob with the Mob Filter to set it. A filter holds 1 mob, so blocking Zombies, Skeletons, Spiders, Creepers and Endermen takes 5 filters. Click a different mob to swap it.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons": the Block Filter works the same way but with a block you want to avoid breaking by accident. It also holds 1 block, and you can swap it by clicking a different block.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons": have a potion effect on you, then right click with the Potion Filter to move the effect into the filter. Repeat until it is filled and active. This also works with modded effects and ones like Haste or Resistance.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons": right click a player with the Player Filter to store them, then put it in an Expulsion Pylon to whitelist them. By default the owner of the pylon is not expelled.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons": the Lifeless Filter stops every mob spawn, hostile or passive, in a 25x25 block area, at every Y level. There is no whitelisting with it.[3]

The pylons
The Protection Pylon quest (a quest in "Pylons") comes after the Mob Filter and Block Filter quests. It stops you from accidentally destroying certain blocks or mobs within the selected chunk radius. Use Mob Filters and Block Filters to choose what is protected, and stack several to cover more. The pack leaves its recipe as the mod's own.[3][4]

The Interdiction Pylon quest (a quest in "Pylons") comes after the Mob Filter and Lifeless Filter quests. It blocks mob spawns: Mob Filters block only certain mobs, while the Lifeless Filter blocks all of them and ignores the working area settings. The pack changed this recipe from the mod's.[3][4]

The Infusion Pylon quest (a quest in "Pylons") comes after the Potion Filter quest. The quest compares it to a Beacon: once a potion effect is loaded with a Potion Filter, it keeps giving you that effect while you are in the set chunk area. The pack changed this recipe too.[3][4]

The Expulsion Pylon quest (a quest in "Pylons") comes after the Player Filter quest. It keeps non-whitelisted players out of 1x1, 3x3 or 5x5 chunks around it, which you set in the top left of its GUI. The quest also says it can't be placed too close to Spawn. The pack changed this recipe as well.[3][4]

The Harvester Pylon quest (a quest in "Pylons") is the odd one out. It comes after the main Pylons quest and a quest with no title (a quest in "Pylons") about the Hoe the pylon needs. It works as a simple auto-farm: place it on or in a water source and it harvests and replants fully grown crops in a 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 or 9x9 area. It needs a chest or similar inventory above it to receive the crops. Hoes that can't break work forever, while ones that can break need replacing. The pack keeps the mod's own recipe for it.[3][4]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Pylons?
3 parts
Everything for this mod lives in one quest chapter called "Pylons", which has 13 quests. One of them is a hidden checkmark quest that only shows up in editing mode, so you won't see it in normal play.[3]
Order of the chapter
- Start with "Pylons" quest. It introduces the mod and asks you for Polished Blackstone, which you need to get started making pylons.[3]
- Pick up the filter quests: a quest in "Pylons" (asks for a Mob Filter), a quest in "Pylons" (a Block Filter), a quest in "Pylons" (a Potion Filter), a quest in "Pylons" (a Player Filter) and a quest in "Pylons" (a Lifeless Filter).[3]
- Read the untitled quest a quest in "Pylons". It tells you the Harvester Pylon needs a Hoe to work. A Hoe that can't break will work forever, while one that can break will need replacing.[3]
- Finish with the five pylon quests. Each one comes after the main Pylons quest plus the quests for the filters it uses (details below).[3]
What the filter quests say
- The Mob Filter and Block Filter each hold just 1 mob or block, so you need one filter per thing you want covered. Clicking a different mob or block with the filter swaps it.[3]
- The Potion Filter is filled by having a potion effect on you and right clicking with the filter. The quest says this also works with modded effects and ones like Haste or Resistance.[3]
- The Player Filter is set by right clicking a player with it. You put it into the Expulsion Pylon to whitelist that player, and by default the owner of the pylon is not expelled.[3]
- The Lifeless Filter stops every mob spawn in a 25x25 block area, at every Y level. It has no whitelisting.[3]
The pylon quests
- a quest in "Pylons" asks for the Harvester Pylon and comes after the Pylons quest and the Hoe quest. It works as a simple auto-farm over a 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 or 9x9 area, and needs an inventory such as a chest above it for the crops.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons" asks for the Infusion Pylon and comes after the Pylons quest and the Potion Filter quest. A potion effect loaded by a Potion Filter is given to you continuously while you are in the set chunk area.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons" asks for the Protection Pylon and comes after the Pylons, Mob Filter and Block Filter quests. It uses those filters to stop you accidentally killing certain mobs or breaking certain blocks.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons" asks for the Expulsion Pylon and comes after the Pylons and Player Filter quests. It keeps non-whitelisted players out of a 1x1, 3x3 or 5x5 chunk area, and the quest says it can't be set too close to spawn.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons" asks for the Interdiction Pylon and comes after the Pylons, Mob Filter and Lifeless Filter quests. It blocks mob spawns, either only for chosen mobs or for all of them with the Lifeless Filter.[3]
Which Pylons config options matter?
4 parts
Pylons has a lot of config options, but only a few change how the pack plays. All of them live in the server config file. Only one value in it is flagged as changed from the mod default, so I'll start there.[6]
The one change from the mod default
The pack sets harvester_pylon.harvesterWorkDelay to 20 ticks. The mod default is 60, and the allowed range is 10 to 120. Since this is the delay between harvest attempts, the Harvester Pylon tries to harvest more often than it would in the standalone mod.[6]
The file doesn't list a mod default for a few other options, so I can't say whether the pack changed them. I've described those below simply as what they are set to. Every option that does list a mod default matches it, apart from the harvester delay.[6]
Harvester Pylon
- harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresTool is true, so the harvester needs a hoe and uses 1 durability per harvest action.[6]
- harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresPower is false. If you turned it on, the tool requirement would be disabled and each block harvested would cost RF instead.[6]
- harvester_pylon.harvesterCanBeAutomated is true, so you can pipe tools in. By default, full automation needs unbreakable tools.[6]
- harvester_pylon.harvesterPowerCost is 5 RF per block and harvester_pylon.harvesterPowerBuffer is 1,000, both matching the mod default. They only matter if power usage is enabled.[6]
Infusion Pylon
- infusion_pylon.infusionRequiredDuration is 3,600 seconds, or 1 hour, which equals 7.5 vanilla extended potions. That's the total duration a Potion Filter needs before you can use it.[1][6]
- infusion_pylon.infusionMinimumDuration is 60 seconds. This is the shortest effect duration you can use for Potion Filters, and it stops unintended interactions with other mods that add persistent low-duration potion effects.[6]
- infusion_pylon.infusionMaximumPotency is 3. The value is 0-indexed, so a Resistance V potion would be potency 4, which is above this cap.[6]
- infusion_pylon.infusionAppliedDuration is 20 seconds. That's the maximum duration applied to you, and it is refreshed every 60 ticks.[6]
- infusion_pylon.infusionDeniedEffects blocks minecraft:absorption and tombstone:ghostly_shape. The pack leaves infusion_pylon.infusionAllowedEffects empty, so every other effect is allowed.[6]
- infusion_pylon.infusionChunkloads is true, so the pylon chunkloads itself. This is limited to one pylon per player, and only while that player is online.[6]
Expulsion Pylon and teams
- expulsion_pylon.expulsionAllowedDimensions is set to the Overworld only, so the Expulsion Pylon won't work in other dimensions.[6]
- expulsion_pylon.expulsionPylonCanExplode is false, so explosions can't destroy it.[6]
- expulsion_pylon.expulsionPylonMaxRadius is 2, which is also the maximum the range allows. The center chunk isn't counted, so a radius of 2 covers a 5x5 chunk area.[6]
- expulsion_pylon.expulsionWorldSpawnRadius is 1, the mod default. It only takes effect if it is larger than the world spawn radius.[6]
- general.teamSupportEnabled is true, so team support is active if a compatible mod such as FTB Teams or Argonauts is installed.[6]
What changed in Pylons between versions?
All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 ships Pylons 5.4.2, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier. Here are the changes from the mod's own changelogs that I can confirm.[2]
- 5.2.1: fixed a crash on dedicated servers.[9]
- 5.4.1: added harvesting compatibility for Cobblemon berries, mint and grain.[10]
- 5.4.2: refactored the Cobblemon compatibility to fix a berry bush instantly resetting to fully grown after you harvested it, which was caused by the growth timer.[11]
If you harvest Cobblemon crops with Pylons, the 5.4.2 version in this pack already includes both the harvesting compatibility and the berry bush fix.[2][10][11]
