What is Pylons?

2 parts

Pylons is a small "just another magic block" mod that adds a handful of utility blocks. Each one does a single job, such as keeping mobs from spawning, harvesting your farm or applying potion effects to you from any distance. The pack ships Pylons 5.0.1, and it has been in the pack since version 0.32 or earlier.[1][2]

What the pylons do

  • Expulsion Pylon: meant for servers, it expels other players from the chunk it sits in. You can whitelist players with a Player Filter, and OPs are always whitelisted.[1]
  • Infusion Pylon: applies effects to you from any distance, though it may need chunkloading. It works with activated Potion Filter items. You activate a filter by applying an effect to yourself, for example from a potion, and then right-clicking the filter.[1]
  • Harvester Pylon: harvests crops in a configurable radius from 3x3 to 9x9 and outputs to an inventory above it. You place it inside the water block of the farm. By default it needs a hoe in its inventory and uses 1 durability per crop harvested.[1]
  • Interdiction Pylon: blocks all spawns of specified mobs within a chunk range from 1x1 to 5x5. Right-click a mob with a Mob Filter, then add the filter to the pylon to block that mob.[1]

Where it fits in the quest book

The pack has a dedicated Pylons quest chapter. The filters have their own quests: a quest in "?" for the Mob Filter, a quest in "?" for the Potion Filter and a quest in "?" for the Player Filter. Each pylon quest comes after its matching filter quest: a quest in "?" for the Interdiction Pylon, a quest in "?" for the Infusion Pylon and a quest in "?" for the Expulsion Pylon. The Harvester Pylon quest, a quest in "?", has different prerequisites.[3]

How do you get started with Pylons?

2 parts

Pylons is a small magic-block mod with a handful of utility blocks: a crop harvester, a mob-spawn blocker, a player expeller and a long-range potion effect applier. Most of them are built around filters, so that's where you start.[1]

Step 1: Make the filters

The pack's quest chapter for this mod has a quest for each filter: a quest in "?" for the Mob Filter, a quest in "?" for the Potion Filter and a quest in "?" for the Player Filter. The interdiction, infusion and expulsion pylon quests each list the matching filter quest as a prerequisite, so making the filters first keeps you on the intended path.[3]

Each filter also has a shapeless clear recipe in the pack.[4]

Step 2: Pick the pylon you need

The Harvester Pylon harvests crops in a configurable radius, from 3x3 to 9x9, and outputs to an inventory above it. Place it inside the water block of your farm. By default it needs a hoe in its inventory and uses 1 durability per crop harvested, but a config option can turn that off. Its quest is a quest in "?", and its recipe is the mod's own, unchanged by the pack.[1][3][4][5]

Mod recipe, not changed by the pack.

The Interdiction Pylon stops spawns of specific mobs in a chunk range from 1x1 to 5x5. Right-click a mob with a Mob Filter to select it, then put the filter into the pylon. The matching quest is a quest in "?". The pack changed this recipe, so don't rely on other guides for it.[1][3][4][5]

Tip: The interdiction, infusion and expulsion pylon quests each list the matching filter quest as a prerequisite, so make the filter first, then the pylon. The harvester pylon quest lists no filter quest.[3]
Watch out: The infusion pylon has a minimum effect duration you can extract into a filter, and filling one takes a lot of duration. The mod's defaults are 60 seconds as the minimum and a total of 1 hour to fully activate a filter. Hovering over a filter in-game shows the minimum duration your setup uses.[1][5]

Unverified Whether the pack changes the mod's default config values (the 60-second minimum duration, the harvester's hoe requirement, and the pylon ranges) could not be confirmed from the sources.

How does Pylons work?

6 parts

Pylons is a small magic-block mod. Each pylon does one job, and you set it up with right-click filters instead of menus. This page covers how each one works and which values the pack has set.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't describe any power, fluid or pipe handling for Pylons. The only item-handling details are the Harvester Pylon's output inventory and its tool rules, covered below.

Expulsion Pylon

The Expulsion Pylon is meant for servers. It expels other players from a configurable chunk range around it. You can whitelist players with a Player Filter, and OPs are always whitelisted.[1][5]

To add someone to the whitelist, right-click that player with a Player Filter to select them.[5]

Infusion Pylon

The Infusion Pylon applies potion effects to you from an activated Potion Filter. It works from any distance, though it may need chunkloading.[1][5]

Activating a Potion Filter

  1. Get an effect on yourself, for example from a potion.[1]
  2. Right-click the Potion Filter. This takes all your remaining duration for that effect and stores it on the filter.[1][5]
  3. Repeat with the same effect to raise the filter's progress. The tooltip shows it as seconds out of the total needed.[5]

The pack leaves the defaults in place. infusion_pylon.infusionMinimumDuration is 60 seconds, the shortest effect a filter can take. infusion_pylon.infusionRequiredDuration is 3,600 seconds, so a filter needs 1 hour of stored duration before it can be used. That equals 7.5 vanilla extended potions.[1][6]

If you have several filters with the same effect, put one in each hand and right-click. The off-hand filter's duration is added to the one in your main hand.[1]

Once it's running, infusion_pylon.infusionAppliedDuration (20 seconds in the pack) is the longest effect duration applied to you, and it is refreshed up to that amount every 60 ticks. infusion_pylon.infusionChunkloads is true, so the pylon chunkloads itself. That is limited to one pylon per player, and only while the player is online.[6]

infusion_pylon.infusionAllowedEffects and infusion_pylon.infusionDeniedEffects are both empty in the pack, so no effects are restricted. If you add entries, denied effects override allowed ones. A disabled effect shows a tooltip saying it is disabled in the config.[5][6]

Harvester Pylon

The Harvester Pylon harvests crops in a configurable radius around it, from 3x3 up to 9x9. It outputs into an inventory above it. Place it inside the farm's water block, or above it.[1][5]

Interdiction Pylon

The Interdiction Pylon prevents all spawns of the mobs you specify within a chunk range from 1x1 to 5x5. Right-click a mob with a Mob Filter to select it, then add the filter to the pylon to block that mob.[1][5]

Filters

All three filters are crafted the same way: right-click to fill them, then use them with their pylon. The pack also has a separate clear recipe for each filter, listed below.[1][4][5]

  • Mob Filter: right-click a mob to select it, for the Interdiction Pylon.[1][5]
  • Player Filter: right-click a player to select them, for the Expulsion Pylon whitelist.[1][5]
  • Potion Filter: right-click with an active effect to apply it to the card, for the Infusion Pylon.[1][5]

How do you progress through Pylons?

3 parts

Pylons doesn't have numbered tiers in this pack. What you get is a small quest chapter that walks you through three filters and four pylons. The sources I have don't give the quests any titles or descriptions, so I'm describing them by what they ask you to obtain.[3]

The quest path

The chapter has seven quests, and each one just asks you to have a Pylons item in your inventory. Three are the filters: a quest in "?" for the Mob Filter, a quest in "?" for the Potion Filter and a quest in "?" for the Player Filter. None of them has a prerequisite in the data.[3]

The four pylon quests come after the filters. Each one lists two prerequisite quests, and the same quest, 30B0240543253EFB, is one of them for all four.[3]

Filter recipes

All three filters use the mod's own recipes, so nothing about them is changed by the pack. You craft each one in a crafting grid.[4]

Pylon recipes

The pack changes the recipes for three of the pylons: the Infusion, Expulsion and Interdiction Pylons. Don't rely on the mod's default recipes for these. Use the ones below, which are the in-pack versions.[4]

The Harvester Pylon keeps the mod's own recipe.[4]

Tip: Do the quests in order: grab a filter first, then the pylon it unlocks. The Harvester Pylon is the odd one out, because its quest isn't tied to any of the three filter quests.[3]

Unverified What the filters and each pylon actually do, and what the clear recipes reset, isn't covered by the quest and recipe data I have, so I'm not describing it here.

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Pylons?

2 parts

This mod has one quest chapter in the pack, called "pylons". It holds seven quests, and every one is an item task: each asks you to have a specific item from the mod. None of the quests has a title in the pack files, so they are listed below by their ids.[3]

Step 1: the three filters

Three quests have no prerequisites listed, so you can start on any of them right away. Each one asks for a different filter item.[3]

Step 2: the four pylons

The four pylon quests each unlock after two earlier quests. One of those is the same for all four: quest 30B0240543253EFB. The sources don't say which chapter it belongs to or what it asks for, so I can't tell you more about it. The other prerequisite differs for each pylon. Three of them are the filter quests above.[3]

Tip: Each filter quest leads into one pylon quest, so you can pick up a filter and its matching pylon together. Mob Filter goes with the Interdiction Pylon, Potion Filter with the Infusion Pylon, and Player Filter with the Expulsion Pylon. The Harvester Pylon is the exception, because it has no filter quest in front of it.[3]

Unverified What quest 30B0240543253EFB and quest 034A9FBCA6D79BB6 ask for, and which chapter they sit in, can't be confirmed from the available sources.

Which Pylons config options matter?

4 parts

Everything here lives in the Pylons server config. The values below are exactly what this pack ships. The sources don't show the mod's stock defaults for most of these options, so I can't tell you which ones the pack changed. I only call out a default where the config comments state it.[6]

What changed in Pylons between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10 0.51 ships with Pylons 5.0.1. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 0.32 or earlier.[2]

Pylons 5.0.1

This is the version your pack runs. The mod's own changelog lists these changes:[2][7]

  • FTB Teams support was ported.[7]
  • Fixed pylons not being breakable on servers.[7]

Unverified Which pack release moved Pylons to this version is not shown in the sources here. The pack changelogs are where that would be listed, and none of the entries provided mention this mod.
