What is Neo Vitae?

2 parts

Neo Vitae is a blood magic mod where your own life force is the currency of power. You harvest blood, refine it, and weave it into rituals, runes and sigils to bend the world to your will. All the Mods 10 8.1 ships version 1.1.15 of the mod.[1][2]

Everything revolves around the Ara Vitae, a multiblock altar that consumes Essentia Vitae (EV) to transmute items. Put a Blood Orb in it and the altar draws on your Anima, a personal pool of essentia that follows you from world to world and dimension to dimension. You upgrade the altar through six tiers of construction, and six tiers of Orbs of Vitae steadily raise how much EV your network can hold.[1]

What you'll get to play with

  • Sigils: one-handed tools, each doing a specific job for a specific essentia cost. You create them in the Tabula Vitae, which also brews Alchemy Flasks and anointments for your gear.[1]
  • The Hellfire Forge: it crafts Sentient weapons and armor that get stronger from the souls of mobs you kill.[1]
  • Rituals: you anchor them with the Master Ritual Stone. There are 30+ of them, covering auto-harvesting, mob farming, flight and much more.[1]
  • Spiritus: a second resource layer split into five aspects, fed by hostile mob kills and grown as crystals out in the world.[1]
  • The Dungeon dimension: an endless, procedurally assembled demon dungeon full of custom demons with their own drop tables that feed back into progression.[1]
  • The Sanguine Ward: a personal shield that burns EV to absorb incoming damage while you hold a Blood Orb.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack gives Neo Vitae its own quest chapter, starting with "Welcome to Neo Vitae" quest, where you place your first Ara Vitae. Right after that, "Bind a Novicius Orb" quest has you turn a diamond into a Novicius Orb of Vitae on the altar. That first orb already raises your Anima to 5,000 EV.[3]

From there the chapter branches out. You make Tabula Rasa for sigils, and you collect Spiritus with Throwing Dagger kills to feed the Hellfire Forge. Blank Runes push the altar up in tiers, and "Tier I: The Ring of Runes" quest is where you earn the Discipulus Orb of Vitae.[3]

Tip: Heading for the ATM Star? One quest in Chapter 3: The ATM Star, a quest in "Chapter 3: The ATM Star", asks for a Teleposer, so plan on working through Neo Vitae at some point on your star run.[4]

Unverified The sources don't show which altar tier or quest in the Neo Vitae chapter unlocks the Teleposer, so check the recipe in-game before you plan around it. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Tip: Stuck? The mod has its own guidebook, Scriptura Vitae, with recipe pages for every machine. It's written to actually teach you the systems, so it's worth keeping open while you learn.[1]

How do you get started with Neo Vitae?

7 parts

Neo Vitae runs on Essentia Vitae (EV), the blood-born fuel behind every altar, sigil, ritual and forge you'll build. The early game is a short chain: raise an altar, bind an orb, make your first slates, and start collecting Spiritus. Here's the order the pack's questline takes you through, and why each step matters.[3]

Step 1: Build the Ara Vitae

Your first craft is the Ara Vitae, the heart of the whole mod, tracked by "Welcome to Neo Vitae" quest. Place it on flat stone that you can walk all the way around. A fresh altar has no blood of its own, so it borrows a little from whoever stands nearby. It never takes enough to kill you, just enough to get it going.[3]

Step 2: Bind your first Orb

The altar's first big job is the Novicius Orb of Vitae ("Bind a Novicius Orb" quest). It costs two thousand EV, pulled from whoever is nearby, so stay close while it works. Right-click the finished orb once and it's bound to you for good.[3]

This comes first because the orb anchors your Anima, the personal EV network that feeds everything you craft from here on. Once it's bound, you can offer your own blood whenever you like. Near an altar, the blood pours straight into the basin. Away from one, it waits inside the orb. Even this first orb raises your Anima to 5,000 EV.[3]

Step 3: Make Tabula Rasa

Not every altar craft becomes an orb. A Tier 0 altar craft costing 1,000 EV gives you Tabula Rasa ("The Blank Slate" quest), the slate you'll scribe almost every sigil onto. Several early crafts use it, including the Hellfire Forge and your first sigils, so make a few. It's also the first rung of a ladder that later climbs through Tabula Robur, Tabula Animata and Tabula Aetherea.[3][5]

Step 4: The Arcane Scribe Tool

Next, brew the Arcane Scribe Tool ("The Scribe's Tool" quest) in the Tabula Vitae, your first alchemical bench. Seat an Orb of Vitae in the bench and it pulls EV straight from your Anima to prepare the tool, along with reagents and your earliest anointments.[3]

Alchemytable (neovitae)

  • any redstone dust
  • any white dye

Recipe id: neovitae:alchemytable/arcane_scribe_tool

Use the tool on a solid surface to inscribe an Alchemy Array. Each inscription uses one charge, and the tool holds twenty uses before it wears out. Click the empty array with a base item, then add a catalyst. Both are consumed when the array activates. Watch the glyph when you place the base: if it changes form, the array recognized it.[6]

A good first array project is the Divination Sigil. It shows how much Anima you're holding and how much EV the altar in front of you has stored. Its quest, "A Sense for Anima" quest, also asks for the Seer's Sigil, which shows exact progress, EV per tick and charge reserve.[3]

Array (neovitae)

Recipe id: neovitae:array/divination_sigil

Step 5: Throwing Daggers and Spiritus

Alongside the altar work, make a Throwing Dagger ("Throwing Daggers" quest). It gives you early ranged damage and starts your Spiritus economy. Anything you wound with a thrown dagger drops Spiritus Essence when it dies. Pick it up, because the Hellfire Forge runs on it.[3]

Step 6: The Hellfire Forge

The Hellfire Forge ("The Hellfire Forge" quest) consumes Spiritus. Feed it Spiritus Gems and it pays you back with more gems, Sentient Tools and more. The quest also asks for a Petty Spiritus Gem.[3]

Tip: Right after the forge, the questline opens "Early Blood Automation" quest. A Spike Trap feeds the altar every time it hurts a creature within 8 blocks of an Ara Vitae. Keep creatures coming with a spawner and the altar starts feeding itself.[3]

Step 7: Blank Runes and Tier I

Runes are how the altar climbs tiers. Every rune starts as a Blank Rune ("Blank Runes" quest) with no purpose until you carve one into it, such as capacity, speed or sacrifice.[3]

For Tier I, place eight Blank Runes one level below the basin in a 3x3 shape with the center left open. The four cardinal slots can take specialized runes. Leave the diagonals alone for now, since they only matter at higher tiers.[3]

Tier I is a big step up. You can forge the Discipulus Orb of Vitae, which raises your Anima ceiling to 25,000 EV ("The Apprentice's Orb" quest). With a bound orb in your off-hand you can also pull EV straight from whatever you kill, sparing your own blood. Potioncrafting with the Alchemy Flask opens up at this tier too.[3]

Unverified The mod's project page describes a Sanguine Ward: holding any tier of Orb of Vitae creates a shield that absorbs incoming damage at an EV cost, and servers can configure it. Whether it is enabled or tuned differently in All the Mods 10 8.1 is unverified.

How does Neo Vitae work?

9 parts

Neo Vitae runs on blood. The mod's main resource is Essentia Vitae, or EV. Your altar consumes it to transmute items, your sigils spend it on every use, and your rituals pay for activation and upkeep with it. Everything below is about how you gather EV, store it and turn it into items, tools and world effects.[1]

EV also exists as a physical fluid you can hold in a bucket, the Bucket of Essentia Vitae. The pack uses that bucket in a crafting recipe for Polished Bloodstone.[5]

The Ara Vitae altar

The Ara Vitae is the heart of the mod. It's a multiblock altar that consumes EV to transmute items. You start at tier 1, which is just a bare stone box that crafts cheap reagents, and you can grow it through six tiers of construction.[1]

The altar block itself, before you build the structure around it.

As you go up the tiers, you add rings of runes that change how the altar behaves. The rune types are Speed, Acceleration, Charging, Capacity, Sacrifice, Dislocation and Orb, and each one also has a Reinforced version. At the higher tiers, cap stones project floating alchemy array visuals above the altar while it works, and each tier gets fancier circuitry.[1]

Some late recipes need a fully built altar. For example, one advancement asks you to craft a legendary record at a Tier 6 Ara Vitae, so plan your build for the long haul.[6]

Anima and Orbs of Vitae

When you drop a Blood Orb into the altar, the altar starts sharing your Anima. Anima is your personal pool of essentia, and it follows you from world to world, dimension to dimension and container to container. Orbs of Vitae come in six tiers, and each tier raises how much your network can hold.[1]

The advancements trace the orb path for you. You craft your first Orb of Vitae, upgrade it through Tier 1 to Tier 4, and finally reach the ultimate orb.[6]

Unverified The in-game guide has entries on altar redstone automation, comparator output, the altar's internal tank and fluid transfer, and on the Vitae Link and its orb link. Their text wasn't available for this guide, so how you pipe EV in or out and read the altar with comparators is unverified here. Check those book pages in game.

Alchemy Arrays

Alchemy Arrays are the most basic crafting method in the mod. You draw them on bare stone or earth with the Arcane Scribe Tool. Most sigils, reagents and bindings start life inside a crafting array, so you'll use them a lot early on.[6]

  1. Hold the Arcane Scribe Tool and press Use on a solid surface. Each inscription costs one charge, and the tool has twenty uses before it wears out.[6]
  2. Click the empty array with an item to place the base component. If the array recognizes the base, the glyph changes shape, which tells you you're on the right path.[6]
  3. Place a second item to act as the catalyst. If both items are valid, the array activates and consumes both, leaving only the result.[6]

Not every array is for crafting. The Repulsion Array pushes hostile creatures away within a 5-block radius. The Deflection Array projects a column roughly 6 blocks tall and 3 blocks wide that reflects projectiles back the way they came.[6]

Tabula Vitae, sigils and anointments

The Tabula Vitae is a six-input alchemical bench. To make a sigil, you put a Blood Orb in it along with the right reagents. A sigil is a one-handed tool that does one specific job for a specific EV cost. The Sigil of Holding can carry up to nine other sigils, and you switch between them with a hotkey. Bound weapons and tools take their durability from your Anima instead of from physical metal.[1]

The Tabula Vitae also brews two kinds of consumables. Alchemy Flasks are reusable potion containers. Anointments are coatings you apply to a tool or weapon without taking it out of your hand. For example, Iron Tip gives a bow 25% more damage and Archer's Polish gives 50% more velocity. Anointments run out as you use the item, not over time.[1]

Hellfire Forge and Sentient equipment

The Hellfire Forge crafts Sentient weapons and armor. This gear absorbs the souls of mobs you kill and gets stronger from them. You can also use the forge to imbue an item with Blood Mending.[1][6]

Sentient armor has a downside, because the in-game guide also documents downgrades. Some reduce your swim speed, your healing or your melee damage by up to 80%. One locks your off-hand, and another makes you hungry if you go too long without attacking something.[6]

Spiritus and crystals

Spiritus is a second resource that runs alongside EV. It has five aspects: Raw, Ruina, Nihilum, Vindicta and Invictus. When you kill hostile mobs, you fill an aspect-aligned pool stored per player. Spiritus Crystals placed in the world pull the local field into clusters you can harvest, leaning toward whichever aspect you've set. Crystals power sentient weapons, advanced upgrades and several rituals.[1]

You can transmute Raw clusters into the other aspects. Ruina is the pickiest: it needs a fully grown Raw cluster plus a catalyst and an Animus Mote.[6]

Rituals

Rituals are anchored on a Master Ritual Stone, surrounded by the specific ritual stones each ritual needs. Some rituals run permanently and others fire once. You start them with an activation crystal, either Weak or Awakened depending on the ritual. The mod has more than 30 rituals.[1][7][8]

  • Ritual of Containment: 2,000 EV to activate with a Weak Activation Crystal, 5 EV upkeep every 5 ticks, and 16 runes (12 Earth and 4 Air Ritual Stones).[9]
  • Butchering ritual: 25,000 EV to activate with a Weak Activation Crystal, 25 EV upkeep every 40 ticks, and 16 runes (8 Fire, 4 Earth and 4 Air Ritual Stones).[7]
  • Crafting ritual: 25,000 EV to activate with an Awakened Activation Crystal, 100 EV upkeep every 40 ticks, and 28 runes (12 Tenebrae, 8 Fire and 8 Earth Ritual Stones).[10]
  • Condor ritual: 10,000 EV to activate with an Awakened Activation Crystal, 100 EV per second upkeep, and 28 runes (20 Air and 8 Tenebrae Ritual Stones).[8]
  • Armour evolution ritual: 50,000 EV to activate with an Awakened Activation Crystal, 25,000 EV per use, and 28 runes (12 Tenebrae, 8 Fire, 4 Earth and 4 Air Ritual Stones).[11]
Watch out: Ritual stats come from data maps, which modpack makers can retune in JSON without recompiling. The costs listed above are the ones printed in the in-game guide. Whether All the Mods 10 changed any ritual data maps couldn't be confirmed, so always check the actual costs in your world.[1]

Several rituals are the mod's real automation tools. The Well of Suffering drains life from nearby mobs to feed your altar. The Torment Nexus binds nearby spawners and trial spawners, suppresses their spawns, and siphons EV and loot from simulated kills. Crystallum Fractura auto-harvests Spiritus Crystal clusters in range with a Fortune bonus. The Ritual of Overgrowth bonemeals nearby crops and saplings.[1]

The Sanguine Ward

If you hold any tier of Blood Orb, your essentia pool forms a Sanguine Ward around you. This personal shield absorbs incoming damage at a steady EV cost per second, draining your Anima before you take the hit. The ward is configurable in the server config.[1]

Unverified This mod's config files weren't available, so the Sanguine Ward's cost and settings in All the Mods 10 8.1 are unverified.

How do you progress through Neo Vitae?

7 parts

Everything in Neo Vitae revolves around your Ara Vitae. You climb its tiers by laying rings of runes around the basin. Each ring is deeper and wider than the last, and pillars or capstones join in at higher tiers. Every new tier lets you craft a stronger Orb of Vitae, and each orb raises the ceiling of your Anima, the pool of Essentia Vitae (EV) that powers your altars, sigils, rituals and forges. The pack's quest chapter walks you through this path step by step, so here's the roadmap.[3]

The orb ladder at a glance

Tier 0: Waking the altar

Start with "Welcome to Neo Vitae" quest. Set your Ara Vitae on flat stone that you can walk all the way around. At first it has no blood of its own, so it borrows a little from whoever stands nearby. It never takes enough to kill.[3]

Next, "Bind a Novicius Orb" quest has you make the Novicius Orb on the empty altar. One right-click binds it to you for good. After that you can offer your own blood whenever you like. Tier I: The Ring of Runes

Eight Blank Runes form your first ring. It sits one level below the basin, in a 3x3 shape with the center left open. The four cardinal slots take specialized runes. You can leave the diagonals alone for now, because they only matter at higher tiers. At this tier you can also hold a bound orb in your off-hand to pull EV from whatever you kill, which spares your own blood.[3]

Tier I unlocks the Discipulus Orb in "The Apprentice's Orb" quest, which gives you five times the Anima of your first orb. Potioncrafting also opens up at this tier through Alchemy Flask, so you have something useful to do if raising the altar starts to feel slow.[3]

Tier II: The Second Ring

Add sixteen more runes in a second ring, one level deeper and wider than the first. Then raise four pillars at the cardinal sides and cap each one in Blood Stained Glass. That makes 24 runes in total. "Tier II: The Magician's Orb" quest rewards you with the Veneficus Orb, and this tier is also where Rituals and Sentient Armour open up.[3]

Your first ritual comes in "Rites and Rituals" quest. Place a Master Ritual Stone in the middle, mark the lesser stones around it with the Ritual Diviner, and start it with a Weak Activation Crystal.[3]

Tier III: Tau and the Master's Orb

Tier III runs on Tau. In "The Tau Harvest" quest you bring Weak Tau home from the Antechamber and let animals walk over it until it ripens into Strong Tau. Next you build the Athanor. It processes the Tau into Weak Blood Shard, the piece that finishes the Tier III pillars.[3]

The pack also adds recipes that turn Hellforged Dust into ingots in either a normal furnace or a blast furnace.[5]

"Tier IV: The Archmage's Orb" quest takes you to 100 runes with one more, deeper ring, and a Hellforged Block at each of the four cardinal points. The Dominus Orb gives you a thousand times what your very first orb did. With luck you'll also find Hellforged Parts in the dungeon. How does Neo Vitae work with other mods?

3 parts

In All the Mods 10, Neo Vitae hooks into the rest of the pack mainly through recipes the pack itself added or changed. Neo Vitae dusts smelt into materials from a whole range of other mods, a couple of recipes output other mods' items, and one of the mod's blocks goes into an All the Tweaks progression item.[5]

The Teleposer and the Dimensional Seed

This is the big one if you're following the pack's main progression. The pack added a shaped recipe for the Dimensional Seed, and a Teleposer is one of its ingredients, alongside compressed blocks and miniature portals from other mods. The Teleposer is also a task in a quest in the "Chapter 3: The ATM Star" questline, a quest in "Chapter 3: The ATM Star".[4][5]

Tip: Even if blood magic isn't your main focus, you'll need a Teleposer for the ATM Star chapter and the Dimensional Seed. Plan to get far enough into Neo Vitae to craft one.[4][5]

Dusts that smelt into other mods' materials

The pack added smelting and blasting recipes for a long list of Neo Vitae dusts. Every one has both a furnace version and a blast furnace version, and each turns the dust into a finished material from another mod.[5]

Watch out: Watch the names: neovitae:yellorite_dust does not give a Yellorite ingot. It smelts into an Uranium Ingot.[5]

Every dust in the list above has a blasting and a smelting recipe that work the same way.

Unverified The sources don't confirm how you get these dusts in the first place. The quest "Alchemy of Ore" quest may be related, but its details weren't available.

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Neo Vitae?

5 parts

Neo Vitae has its own quest chapter in All the Mods 10, plus one appearance in the main ATM Star chapter. The dedicated chapter takes you from your very first altar all the way to a Tier V Ara Vitae. Along the way it branches into automation, alchemy, Sentient gear and a trip into the Endless Realm.[3][4]

Getting started

  1. Everything starts with "Welcome to Neo Vitae" quest, which asks you to place an Ara Vitae. The altar has no blood of its own yet, so it borrows a little from whoever stands nearby to wake up.[3]
  2. Three quests branch out from there. "Bind a Novicius Orb" quest asks for a Novicius Orb of Vitae, which raises your Anima to 5,000 EV. "The Blank Slate" quest asks for Tabula Rasa. "Throwing Daggers" quest asks for a Throwing Dagger and some Spiritus Essence.[3]
  3. Tabula Rasa leads to "The Scribe's Tool" quest, which asks for an Arcane Scribe Tool. The daggers lead to "The Hellfire Forge" quest, which asks for the Hellfire Forge and a Petty Spiritus Gem.[3]
  4. The Hellfire Forge unlocks three quests: "Sentient Steel" quest for the Sentient Sword, "Laying the Veins" quest for routing conduits and nodes, and "Early Blood Automation" quest for a Spike Trap.[3]

Climbing the altar tiers

The backbone of the chapter is upgrading your altar, and each tier quest asks you to craft a bigger Orb of Vitae. It all starts with "Blank Runes" quest, which needs both the Novicius Orb and Tabula Rasa quests done before it opens.[3]

Side branches along the way

Routing continues after Laying the Veins with "Rerouting the Network" quest and "A Sluggish Heart Serves No One" quest. Once you have the Apprentice's Orb, "Bottled Effects" quest asks for an Alchemy Flask, and "A Sharper Point" quest follows with a Tipped Throwing Dagger. The Divination and Seer's Sigils in "A Sense for Anima" quest and the sigil sampler "A Belt Full of Sigils" quest both follow a quest called Circle of Intent.[3]

The Magician's Orb opens two branches. The first is "Rites and Rituals" quest, which leads to "The Sentient Shell" quest and then "Wear It In" quest. The second is "The Tau Harvest" quest, which leads to "The Athanor" quest. The Athanor then unlocks "The Weak Blood Shard" quest, "Alchemy of Ore" quest, "The Crucible's Greed" quest and "Enchantment Salvaging" quest.[3]

The Endless Realm and Spiritus endgame

Tier III unlocks "Highway to Hell" quest, which asks for a Standard Dungeon Key and a trip into a new dimension. From there the dungeon path runs through "The Mines" quest, then "The Foreman" quest, where a tough boss guards a key. It continues through "Demonite" quest and "Hellforged Steel" quest, which leads straight into Tier IV. Separately, "Deeper Locks" quest leads on to "Doubling Down on Runes" quest.[3]

Tier III also opens the aura line: "The Aura Between Worlds" quest, then "Reading the Aura" quest, then "Crystals from Nothing" quest, and finally "The Five Aspects" quest. A third branch, "Refining the Tau" quest, leads to "Coaxing Crystals" quest.[3]

Tip: You don't need every sigil or every aspect. A Belt Full of Sigils and The Five Aspects each accept any single one of their listed items.[3]

In the ATM Star chapter

Neo Vitae also shows up in Chapter 3: The ATM Star. There, the untitled quest a quest in "Chapter 3: The ATM Star" asks for a Teleposer.[4]

Unverified Some quests list prerequisites named Circle of Intent and Breaching the Veil. These don't appear in the available quest data, so their exact place in the chapter can't be confirmed.

Which Neo Vitae config options matter?

2 parts

The Neo Vitae config file you'll most likely care about in this pack is . It holds the list of materials the mod knows about. Each entry covers one ore or resource, from vanilla iron and gold to modded stuff like allthemodium, osmium and the Silent Gems gemstones. Each entry says which item forms that material comes in, which tags it matches, and what it smelts into.[12]

What each material entry sets

  • The stages field lists which forms a material has. Most materials use fragment, gravel and dust. Coal and hellforged only have dust, and demonite only has fragment and gravel.[12]
  • The ore, raw and ingot tag fields link a material to the common tags. For example, iron uses c:ores/iron, c:raw_materials/iron and c:ingots/iron, so any mod's items with those tags count as that material.[12]
  • The smelt_to field sets what the material smelts into, and smelt_xp sets the experience it gives. Iron smelts to a vanilla iron ingot for 0.7 XP, gold gives 1, and netherite scrap gives 2.[12]
  • The dust_yield_from_ore field is 3 for almost every material in this pack. Coal is the exception at 6.[12]
  • The generative flag is true for nearly every material, but the pack sets it to false for allthemodium, vibranium and unobtainium.[12]

Special cases worth knowing

  • The netherite_scrap material is shown as Ancient Debris. It accepts Ancient Debris as an extra ore item and netherite scrap as an extra raw item, then smelts into netherite scrap.[12]
  • Demonite has no smelting output of its own (its smelt XP is 0), and its gravel and fragment forms are aliased to hellforged. Hellforged dust then smelts into Hellforged Ingot for 1 XP.[12]
  • Amethyst counts Amethyst Cluster as an extra ore item and smelts into amethyst shards.[12]
  • Coal also accepts plain coal as an extra input item.[12]
  • Some materials have no smelt_to target and a smelt XP of 0. Examples are anglesite, bauxite, chaos, monazite, stellarite, the uraninite grade variants and the coloured xychorium variants.[12]
  • Yellorite smelts to the All the Ores uranium ingot rather than an ingot of its own.[12]
Tip: If you're hunting for why a modded ore doesn't behave the way you expect with Neo Vitae, check its entry in this file first. The tags and smelting target listed there are what the pack actually uses.[12]

Unverified The sources don't include Neo Vitae's default materials file. That means it can't be confirmed which of these entries or values All the Mods 10 changed from the mod's defaults. It also can't be confirmed exactly what the generative flag controls in-game, beyond the fact that it is switched off for allthemodium, vibranium and unobtainium here.

What changed in Neo Vitae between versions?

Neo Vitae hasn't been in All the Mods 10 for long, so its history in the pack is short. Here's what the pack changelogs show so far.[13][14]

  • All the Mods 10 8.0: Neo Vitae was added to the pack at version 1.1.9.[14]
  • All the Mods 10 8.1: Neo Vitae was updated from 1.1.9 to 1.1.15.[13]

If you're playing All the Mods 10 8.1, you're running Neo Vitae 1.1.15. That's the jar neovitae-1.21.1-1.1.15.jar in your mods folder, which is handy if you want to confirm which version you have.[2]

Unverified What actually changed between Neo Vitae 1.1.9 and 1.1.15 (new features, bug fixes or balance tweaks) isn't covered by the sources available for this guide, because the mod's own changelogs aren't included. If something behaves differently from an older video or guide, the jump between these versions could be the reason, but that hasn't been confirmed.
