What is Jade 🔍?

1 part

Jade is an information HUD mod. It shows you information about whatever block or entity you're looking at. It's a fork of Hwyla/Waila, the classic 'what am I looking at?' tooltip mods, rebuilt for modern Minecraft with a focus on a better user experience and a better API.[1]

This pack ships Jade 15.9.2 for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been part of the pack since version 1.3 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the setup.[2]

Jade is for pretty much every player. In a big modded pack you'll constantly run into blocks and machines you don't recognise, and Jade lets you identify them just by looking at them. Compared to Hwyla, Jade brings these improvements:[1]

  • A redesigned API.[1]
  • More vanilla addons.[1]
  • More configuration options.[1]
  • Better accessibility, including a key that narrates your target.[1]

Jade can run on the client side only, but many of its features need Jade on the server side as well. Examples are showing item storage, the fuel amount in a brewing stand, and the bees inside a beehive.[1]

Default keys

  • Keypad 0 opens the configuration screen.[1]
  • Keypad 1 toggles the overlay.[1]
  • Keypad 2 toggles the liquid display.[1]
  • Keypad 3 shows recipes for what you're looking at (requires JEI).[1]
  • Keypad 4 shows uses for what you're looking at (requires JEI).[1]
  • Keypad 5 narrates your target.[1]
Tip: If the overlay gets in your way or shows too much, press Keypad 0 to open Jade's configuration screen and adjust it to your liking.[1]

Unverified The sources don't confirm whether this pack changes any of Jade's default keybinds or settings, or whether a given server has Jade installed. Server-dependent features may not show up on every server.

How do you get started with Jade 🔍?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Jade is the info HUD in this pack. It shows information about whatever you're looking at, so it's the first thing to learn before you start exploring all the other mods. Once you know what a block or mob is, you can decide what to do with it.[1]

Unverified No in-pack recipe or quest involving Jade could be confirmed, so there is nothing to craft or complete to get started with it.

Learn the default keys

These are Jade's default keybinds. If the tooltip doesn't react the way you expect, check your Controls screen, because the pack may have rebound them and I can't confirm that from my sources.[1]

  • Keypad 0 opens the configuration screen. Start here.[1]
  • Keypad 1 toggles the overlay on and off.[1]
  • Keypad 2 toggles the liquid display.[1]
  • Keypad 3 shows recipes and Keypad 4 shows uses, both requiring JEI.[1]
  • Keypad 5 narrates your target.[1]

First steps in the config screen

  1. Open the configuration screen with its key and look for the display mode setting. It controls how the tooltip behaves and how the show-details key works.[1][3]
  2. Pick a mode. Hold-key mode needs you to hold the overlay key. Toggle mode turns the overlay on and off each time you press the key. Lite mode shows further information while you hold the details key.[3]
  3. Turn on the option that shows which mod an item comes from. In a big pack this saves a lot of guessing.[3]
  4. Optionally enable the setting that shows the target's coordinates, or the one that shows your distance to it.[3]
Tip: Jade works with only the client side installed, but many features need it on the server too. Item storage, brewing stand fuel amount and bees in a beehive are examples. If those details are missing in multiplayer, the server side is the likely reason.[1]

If the tooltip gets in your way, there are options to hide it on most GUI screens, on the debug screen and on the player list. You can also turn the tooltip off completely with the global switch. If you prefer to hear information, Jade has a narrator and accessibility features for showing more detail.[3]

How does Jade 🔍 work?

8 parts

Jade is an information HUD: it has no machines, multiblocks or power of its own. Its core job is to show you information about whatever you're looking at, in a small overlay box on your screen. Think of it as a modern take on Hwyla/Waila, rebuilt with a new API, more vanilla add-ons, more config options and better accessibility.[1][4]

Client and server

Jade can run on the client side only, but many of its features need Jade on the server too. That includes item storage contents, brewing stand fuel amount and bees inside a beehive. So in a multiplayer world, those details depend on the server having the mod.[1]

Showing and hiding the overlay

The global switch general.displayTooltip is on in this pack. Blocks, entities and bosses can all be targeted, because general.displayBlocks, general.displayEntities and general.displayBosses are all enabled.[4][5]

The pack sets general.displayMode to Toggle. In that mode, pressing the Show Overlay key turns the overlay on and off, instead of you having to hold a key. The other modes are hold-key, where you have to keep the key held, and lite, where you hold the Show Details key to see more.[4][5]

  • Keypad 0 opens the configuration screen.[1]
  • Keypad 1 toggles the overlay.[1]
  • Keypad 2 toggles the liquid display.[1]
  • Keypad 3 shows recipes and Keypad 4 shows uses of the target, both of which need JEI.[1]
  • Keypad 5 narrates the target.[1]
Tip: Those are Jade's default keys. If a key doesn't respond, check your Controls settings in case the binding was changed or clashes with another mod.[1]

The overlay also gets out of your way. With general.hideFromGUIs on, it hides on most GUI screens. With general.hideFromTabList on, it hides while the player list is shown.[4][5]

Ignore lists

Jade keeps two ignore lists for targets. You add registry ids to the values list, and Jade won't show those things. In this pack, values contains only barrier.[6]

values lists area_effect_cloud, firework_rocket, interaction, text_display and lightning_bolt, so those entities never take over the overlay.[7]

Item, energy and fluid storage

Look at a container and Jade can list what's inside. With minecraft.item_storage on, it shows 9 items normally (minecraft.item_storage.normal_amount). Hold the Show Details key and it shows up to 54 (minecraft.item_storage.detailed_amount), in rows of 9.[4][8]

When 5 or fewer items are shown, Jade adds item names instead of just icons (minecraft.item_storage.show_name_amount).[4][8]

Energy and fluid storage are both shown as a progress bar through minecraft.energy_storage.style and minecraft.fluid_storage.style. Their detailed options, which would hide this info until you press Show Details, are turned off. So you see energy and fluid levels at a glance.[4][8]

Fluids themselves are controlled by general.fluidMode, which this pack sets to ANY.[5]

Unverified What the ANY fluid mode does compared with the other fluid modes, such as the fallback mode that only shows a fluid when there is no other target, is not described in the available sources.

Mining, mobs and vanilla details

minecraft.harvest_tool is on, so Jade tells you about the tool needed to break a block. minecraft.breaking_progress is also on. Harvest info is hidden in creative and spectator mode, because minecraft.harvest_tool.creative is off.[4][8]

For mobs, Jade shows health and armor. Health icons render up to 40 (minecraft.entity_health.max_for_render), 10 per line, and armor renders up to 20. Fractions are not shown.[8]

Jade also shows the time until an entity's next drop, such as an egg or armadillo scute. Other vanilla details include a note block's note and instrument, the waxed state of blocks, a warning for special TNT that ignites when hit, and a block's enchantment power.[4][8]

Mod integrations

Much of Jade's value in a big pack comes from plugins, which are toggled in plugins.json. This pack has integrations enabled for storage and automation mods, including ae2.crafting_monitor, ae2.pattern_provider, mekanism.energy, mekanism.chemical, functionalstorage.drawer, pipez.pipe, modularrouters.router and pneumaticcraft.pneumatic, plus many more.[8]

Debug-style info is off

The technical extras are all disabled in this pack. That includes block face, block states, block properties, coordinates, distance, and special ids like BlockEntity and Fluid. jade.registry_name is set to OFF. The mod name line stays on through jade.mod_name.[4][8]

Item tooltips also show which mod an item comes from, styled blue and italic.[4][5]

Reach, accessibility and look

general.extendedReach, which increases the distance limit to the target, is 0 here. The accessibility plugin and text-to-speech are both off by default. If you turn them on, Jade can display and narrate more details.[4][5]

The overlay uses the jade:dark theme at 0.7 alpha, with an animation when it appears, disappears or changes size.[4][5]

Which Jade 🔍 config options matter?

3 parts

Jade's settings live in the config/jade folder, split across a few JSON files: jade.json for the overlay itself, plugins.json for which bits of info show up, and two small ignore lists. You can also change most of it in-game, Keypad 0 opens Jade's configuration screen by default.[1][5][6][7][8]

The overlay itself (jade.json)

What the tooltip shows (plugins.json)

plugins.json is a big on/off list for every info provider. Almost everything is enabled here, including the vanilla providers and the integrations for AE2, Mekanism, PneumaticCraft, Productive Bees, Mystical Agriculture, Functional Storage, Railcraft, SecurityCraft, Waystones and plenty more.[8]

There's also a sort-order.json that lists every provider, but the pack leaves every entry null, so nothing is reordered: the tooltip lines appear in Jade's normal order.[9]

Hidden targets

  • values contains barrier, so Jade won't put a tooltip on barrier blocks.[6]
  • values hides area_effect_cloud, firework_rocket, interaction, text_display and lightning_bolt, the invisible or momentary entities that would otherwise hijack your tooltip.[7]
Watch out: Jade works client-side, but several of these readouts (item storage, brewing stand fuel amount, bees in a beehive) need Jade installed on the server too. On a dedicated server, make sure it's there or those lines stay blank.[1]

Unverified The config files show the pack's values but not Jade's own defaults, so which of these were changed by the pack and which are stock can't be confirmed from them.

What changed in Jade 🔍 between versions?

2 parts

All the Mods 10 2.12 ships Jade 15.9.2 for NeoForge. Jade has been in the pack since version 0.32 or earlier. Below are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first, so you can see what has been fixed or added in the builds leading up to the one you're running.[2]

Recent Jade releases

  • 15.9.2 (the pack's version): fixes an error that happened while remapping data provider ids, caused by different instances sharing the same id.[2][10]
  • 15.9.1: fixes extension provider lookup and some translation issues.[10][11]
  • 15.9.0: fixes an exception when looking at a Zombie Villager and fixes the chest display name. It also updates the Japanese translation.[10][11][12]
  • 15.8.3: fixes universal plugins not working.[10][13]
  • 15.8.2: fixes the overlay not being able to be fully transparent. It also reverts the text background that 15.8.1 added to the progress element.[10][13][14]
  • 15.8.1: improves number formatting, adds containerFinder parameters and adds a perspectiveMode option.[10][13][14]
  • 15.7.1: fixes extended reach not working, a broken keybind change, option search and some overlay preview bugs. It also fixes "Collecting items..." showing in the wrong situation, adds egg hatch progress and includes some config changes.[10][15]
  • 15.6.0: data providers were converted to codecs, which the changelog says should hopefully fix the "NBT packet is too large" problem.[10][16]
  • 15.5.2: fixes the missing growth info on the torchflower plant and powered rails not reporting whether they are actively powered. It also fixes an incompatibility with Leawind's Third Person.[10][15][16]

Earlier releases

Going further back, 15.4.0 fixed capability handlers without a block entity not being recognized. 15.3.4 added an accessibility plugin, hints in chat instead of toasts, and showing a villager's mod name according to its profession. It also showed whether an ender portal frame has an eye and fixed an incompatibility with Wilder Wild.[10][15][16]

Unverified The pack changelogs have no entries for Jade, so it is unconfirmed whether the pack changed any Jade settings or behavior between releases.
