What is Jade 🔍?
1 part
Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide
Jade is an information HUD mod. It shows you information about whatever block or entity you're looking at. It's a fork of Hwyla/Waila, the classic 'what am I looking at?' tooltip mods, rebuilt for modern Minecraft with a focus on a better user experience and a better API.[1]
This pack ships Jade 15.9.2 for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been part of the pack since version 1.3 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the setup.[2]
Jade is for pretty much every player. In a big modded pack you'll constantly run into blocks and machines you don't recognise, and Jade lets you identify them just by looking at them. Compared to Hwyla, Jade brings these improvements:[1]
- A redesigned API.[1]
- More vanilla addons.[1]
- More configuration options.[1]
- Better accessibility, including a key that narrates your target.[1]
Jade can run on the client side only, but many of its features need Jade on the server side as well. Examples are showing item storage, the fuel amount in a brewing stand, and the bees inside a beehive.[1]
Default keys
- Keypad 0 opens the configuration screen.[1]
- Keypad 1 toggles the overlay.[1]
- Keypad 2 toggles the liquid display.[1]
- Keypad 3 shows recipes for what you're looking at (requires JEI).[1]
- Keypad 4 shows uses for what you're looking at (requires JEI).[1]
- Keypad 5 narrates your target.[1]
Unverified The sources don't confirm whether this pack changes any of Jade's default keybinds or settings, or whether a given server has Jade installed. Server-dependent features may not show up on every server.
How do you get started with Jade 🔍?
3 parts
Jade is the info HUD: look at a block or mob and a small tooltip tells you what it is. There is nothing to craft for it here, so this section has no recipe blocks. It is on from the start, and the useful part is knowing the keys and what the pack changed.[1]
First steps
- Point at something. The tooltip appears with the name of what you are looking at. The pack keeps the mod name line switched on (jade.mod_name), so you can see which mod a block comes from.[1][3]
- Learn the default keys. Keypad 0 opens the configuration screen, Keypad 1 toggles the overlay and Keypad 2 toggles the liquid display. Keypad 5 narrates the target.[1]
- If you use JEI, Keypad 3 shows recipes and Keypad 4 shows uses for what you are looking at.[1]
- Open the configuration screen to adjust the overlay. It has a Display Mode with Toggle, Hold and Lite options, plus overlay position, display scale and theme.[1][4]
What this pack changes
The pack turns off several of the technical lines that Jade can show. Block face, block properties, block states, coordinates, relative coordinates and distance are all set to false, and registry name is set to "OFF". They live in the plugin settings file. If the tooltip looks cleaner than you expected, this is why.[3]
- jade.coordinates and jade.distance are both false, so you will not see a position or distance readout by default.[3]
- jade.registry_name is "OFF", so the tooltip does not show registry ids by default.[3]
- The Create goggles line (jadeaddons.create.goggles) is false, and its requires_goggles option is true.[3]
- Storage tooltips show 9 items by default and 54 in detailed view, with 9 items per line and 5 names listed.[3]
Things Jade will not point at
The pack keeps a few targets out of the tooltip. The block ignore list is set in values and holds the barrier and simulated:steering_wheel. The entity ignore list is set in values and holds area_effect_cloud, firework_rocket, interaction, text_display and lightning_bolt.[5][6]
How does Jade 🔍 work?
6 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.11 guide
Jade doesn't add machines, multiblocks or pipes of its own. It's an information HUD, a modern take on Hwyla/Waila, that shows you information about whatever you're looking at. Its core mechanics are all about how that overlay behaves, what it can read from blocks and entities, and how much control you get over it.[1][7]
The overlay and its display modes
The tooltip has a global on/off switch. On top of that, a display mode setting controls how the overlay behaves normally and how the Show Details key works. There are three modes to pick from.[7]
- Hold key mode: the overlay only appears while you hold the Show Overlay key.[7]
- Lite mode: the overlay shows its basic info, and you hold Show Details to see more.[7]
- Toggle mode: pressing Show Overlay turns the tooltip on and off. When you hide it, a small popup reminds you to press the key again to bring it back.[7]
You can also have the overlay animate when it appears and disappears, and morph smoothly when its size changes. It can hide itself automatically while the debug screen, the player list or most GUIs are open. If your main hand is set to left, it can mirror its position.[7]
Reading storage, energy and fluids
This is where Jade gets really useful around a modded base. When you look at a container, the overlay can list the items inside it. Separate settings control how many items appear normally and how many appear while you hold Show Details. Another setting caps how many items get their full names shown instead of just icons.[7]
Energy and fluid storage have their own detailed options. With these turned on, energy or fluid info only shows while you press Show Details, which keeps the overlay compact until you want the numbers.[7]
Fluids in the world work a little differently. A key toggles whether Jade shows liquids at all. A fallback option makes Jade only show a fluid when there's nothing else to target, so water or lava won't get in the way of the block you actually care about.[1][7]
Client side versus server side
Jade can run on the client alone, but many of its features need Jade on the server as well. Examples include item storage contents, a brewing stand's fuel amount and the bees inside a beehive. If you're on a server without Jade and those details are missing, that's why.[1]
Unverified Whether this pack's server setup includes Jade on the server side isn't confirmed by the available sources.
For extra integration with other mods, Jade's author points players to a separate Jade Addons mod.[1]
Unverified Whether Jade Addons is included in this pack isn't confirmed by the available sources.
Extra info you can switch on
Jade's plugins can add a lot of small but handy details to the overlay. Each one can be toggled in the plugin settings.[7]
- Coordinates of your target, plus relative coordinates while you hold Ctrl.[7]
- The distance between you and your target, and which face of the block you're touching.[7]
- Registry names, including special IDs like BlockEntity and Fluid. This can follow the game's advanced tooltips option.[7]
- Harvest tool information, which can optionally show in creative or spectator mode too.[7]
- The time until an entity's next drop, such as an egg or an armadillo scute.[7]
- A note block's note and instrument, a block's enchantment power, and whether something like a sign is waxed.[7]
- A warning for special TNT that ignites when hit.[7]
- The name of the mod an item comes from, shown on its tooltip.[7]
A reach distance setting increases how far away a target can be and still be picked up. A perspective setting lets you choose between an eye-based mode, which is more accurate while you're moving, and a camera-based mode, which works better with mods that change how the camera behaves.[7]
Accessibility and narration
Jade has an accessibility plugin that displays and narrates more details, with finer control in the plugin settings. A key narrates your current target. When you open the narrator, a popup confirms it's on and tells you to press the key again to turn it off.[1][7]
Default keys
- Keypad 0 opens the configuration screen.[1]
- Keypad 1 toggles the overlay.[1]
- Keypad 2 toggles liquid display.[1]
- Keypad 3 shows recipes and Keypad 4 shows uses for what you're looking at. Both require JEI.[1]
- Keypad 5 narrates your target.[1]
Unverified These are Jade's default keybinds. The sources don't confirm whether this pack changes them, and they don't list a default key for Show Details.
Which Jade 🔍 config options matter?
5 parts
Jade is configured through a handful of JSON files in config/jade. Here are the options you're most likely to notice in play, and the exact values this pack sets for them.[3][5][6]
Unverified The sources I have don't list Jade's own default values, so I can't confirm which of the settings below the pack changed from the mod default.
What the tooltip shows about blocks
The pack leaves the mod name on with jade.mod_name set to true. Several extra detail lines are turned off: jade.block_face, jade.block_properties, jade.block_states, jade.coordinates, jade.coordinates.rel and jade.distance are all false. The registry name line is off too: jade.registry_name is set to "OFF" and jade.registry_name.special is false.[3]
Storage, energy and fluids
Both minecraft.energy_storage.style and minecraft.fluid_storage.style are set to "PROGRESS_BAR", and the matching detailed options (minecraft.energy_storage.detailed and minecraft.fluid_storage.detailed) are false.[3]
- minecraft.item_storage.normal_amount is 9.[3]
- minecraft.item_storage.detailed_amount is 54.[3]
- minecraft.item_storage.items_per_line is 9.[3]
- minecraft.item_storage.show_name_amount is 5.[3]
Mobs
- minecraft.entity_health.icons_per_line is 10.[3]
- minecraft.entity_health.max_for_render is 40.[3]
- minecraft.entity_health.show_fractions is false.[3]
- minecraft.entity_armor.max_for_render is 20.[3]
Harvest tool and Create
The harvest tool line is on, with minecraft.harvest_tool.effective_tool true. minecraft.harvest_tool.creative, minecraft.harvest_tool.new_line and minecraft.harvest_tool.show_unbreakable are all false.[3]
For Create, jadeaddons.create.goggles and jadeaddons.create.goggles.detailed are false, while jadeaddons.create.goggles.requires_goggles is true. Also, compactmachines.show_owner is false.[3]
Things Jade ignores
Jade skips some targets entirely. In values the pack lists barrier and simulated:steering_wheel. In values it lists area_effect_cloud, firework_rocket, interaction, text_display and lightning_bolt.[5][6]
The pack's sort-order.json lists every Jade provider with the value null, so it doesn't set a custom order for any of them.[8]
What changed in Jade 🔍 between versions?
3 parts
FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 ships Jade 15.10.6 for NeoForge. Jade was already in the pack by version 1.0.3 or earlier. The changes below come from the mod's own changelogs, so they describe Jade itself and not edits made by the pack.[9]
15.10.6 (the version in this pack)
- Fixed fluids that need registries to encode not being displayed.[10]
- Improved compatibility with Create Aeronautics, which is handy in an Aero pack.[10]
- Updated the Chinese translation.[10]
15.10.1 to 15.10.5
- 15.10.5: blend and depth test are now disabled after the overlay finishes rendering.[10][11]
- 15.10.4: removed a destroySpeed check, and the jukebox no longer shows "empty" when there is no server data.[10][11]
- 15.10.3: fixed the offset of modded boss bars.[10][11]
- 15.10.2: fixed a crash (an NPE in InvWrapper) involving trapped chests.[10][11]
- 15.10.1: fixed fluid amounts above the max int limit not being read properly on NeoForge, plus a stream data ClassCastException.[10][11]
15.10.0
This release fixed several porting mistakes, made the hideModName cache use a weak reference, and added filtering of large bitmap glyphs.[11]
