What is Jade 🔍?

2 parts

Jade is the information HUD mod in this pack: look at a block or entity and it tells you what you're looking at. It's the modern continuation of Hwyla/Waila, rebuilt with a redesigned API, more vanilla addons, higher configurability and better accessibility.[1]

The pack ships Jade 15.3.4 for NeoForge, and it's been part of the pack since version 0.33 or earlier, so it's there from your very first world.[2]

This one is for everyone. Whether you're identifying an unfamiliar ore on your first night or checking a machine deep in a tech mod, Jade saves you a trip to the recipe viewer. It isn't a progression mod, so there's nothing to unlock or craft, just a HUD that's useful the whole way through.[1]

Default keybinds

  • Keypad 0 opens the configuration screen.[1]
  • Keypad 1 toggles the overlay.[1]
  • Keypad 2 toggles the liquid display.[1]
  • Keypad 3 shows recipes for the target, which requires JEI.[1]
  • Keypad 4 shows uses for the target, which also requires JEI.[1]
  • Keypad 5 narrates the target.[1]

Client and server

Jade can be installed client-side only, but a lot of what makes it great needs Jade on the server too, such as item storage contents, brewing stand fuel amounts and bees in a beehive. If you're playing on a server with friends, make sure it's installed on both sides.[1]

Tip: Jade has companion mods called Jade Addons that add integration for more mods, with separate NeoForge and Fabric versions.[1]

How do you get started with Jade 🔍?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Jade is the info HUD in this pack. It shows information about whatever you're looking at, so it's the first thing to learn before you start exploring all the other mods. Once you know what a block or mob is, you can decide what to do with it.[1]

Unverified No in-pack recipe or quest involving Jade could be confirmed, so there is nothing to craft or complete to get started with it.

Learn the default keys

These are Jade's default keybinds. If the tooltip doesn't react the way you expect, check your Controls screen, because the pack may have rebound them and I can't confirm that from my sources.[1]

  • Keypad 0 opens the configuration screen. Start here.[1]
  • Keypad 1 toggles the overlay on and off.[1]
  • Keypad 2 toggles the liquid display.[1]
  • Keypad 3 shows recipes and Keypad 4 shows uses, both requiring JEI.[1]
  • Keypad 5 narrates your target.[1]

First steps in the config screen

  1. Open the configuration screen with its key and look for the display mode setting. It controls how the tooltip behaves and how the show-details key works.[1][3]
  2. Pick a mode. Hold-key mode needs you to hold the overlay key. Toggle mode turns the overlay on and off each time you press the key. Lite mode shows further information while you hold the details key.[3]
  3. Turn on the option that shows which mod an item comes from. In a big pack this saves a lot of guessing.[3]
  4. Optionally enable the setting that shows the target's coordinates, or the one that shows your distance to it.[3]
Tip: Jade works with only the client side installed, but many features need it on the server too. Item storage, brewing stand fuel amount and bees in a beehive are examples. If those details are missing in multiplayer, the server side is the likely reason.[1]

If the tooltip gets in your way, there are options to hide it on most GUI screens, on the debug screen and on the player list. You can also turn the tooltip off completely with the global switch. If you prefer to hear information, Jade has a narrator and accessibility features for showing more detail.[3]

How does Jade 🔍 work?

7 parts

Jade is an information HUD mod: it shows information about whatever block or entity you are looking at. It collects the data for your target and renders a tooltip near the top of your screen, and the pack ships it with tooltip rendering turned on so it works from your first world load.[1][4][5]

Jade is a fork of Hwyla/Waila for modern Minecraft, rebuilt around a new API with more vanilla addons, higher configurability and better accessibility. That API is what lets other mods add their own lines to the tooltip, which is why so much of the pack's content shows up inside the same little box.[1]

How the overlay decides what to show

The pack runs Jade in TOGGLE display mode. In that mode, pressing the show-overlay key turns the HUD on and off, rather than needing the key held down. Jade's other modes behave differently: a hold-key mode needs the overlay key held, and a lite mode hides the extra lines behind a separate show-details key.[4][5]

Blocks, entities and bosses are all valid targets in this pack, since display for all three is enabled. Fluids use the ANY mode rather than the fallback behaviour, which only shows a fluid when there is no other target.[4][5]

The reach limit is left at the default: the extended reach value is 0, so Jade does not increase the distance limit to your target. If you want to read a machine across the room, walk closer.[4][5]

When the HUD gets out of your way

  • The tooltip hides while the debug screen (F3) is open.[4][5]
  • It hides on most GUI displays, so opening a machine or your inventory won't leave the box floating over the screen.[4][5]
  • It hides while the player list is showing.[4][5]
  • When a boss bar is on screen, the overlay uses PUSH_DOWN, so the two don't fight for the same space.[5]

The overlay itself is anchored at the top centre of the screen at scale 1, with 0.7 alpha on the jade:dark theme, and it animates as it appears, disappears and changes size. Preview overlay and built-in camouflage are both on, and the disappearing delay is 0, so the box goes away as soon as you look away.[4][5]

The plugin system

Everything Jade shows beyond the block's name comes from plugins, and each one is a separate toggle in the plugin config. The pack ships well over a hundred of these entries, covering vanilla systems and a long list of the pack's mods, and nearly all of them are enabled out of the box.[6]

For automation, the vanilla-side plugins are the ones you'll lean on most. Item storage, fluid storage, energy storage, furnace progress, crop progress, redstone level and breaking progress are all on, which means a plain look at a chest, tank or machine gives you its contents, buffer or progress without opening it.[6]

Item storage has its own numbers tuned in the pack. It shows 9 items normally and 54 when the show-details key is pressed, laid out 9 per line, and it prints item names instead of bare icons when there are at most 5 stacks to list.[4][6]

Energy and fluid storage are not gated behind the details key in this pack: both detailed options are set to false, so their info is on the tooltip all the time instead of only while you hold the key.[4][6]

Entity readouts are tuned too. Health is drawn as icons up to 40, at 10 icons per line, without fractional numbers, and armour renders as icons up to 20.[6]

Harvest tool info is enabled and shows the effective tool, kept on the same line as the rest of the tooltip. It is hidden in creative and spectator mode, and unbreakable blocks are not called out.[4][6]

Mod integrations in the tooltip

The pack's plugin file enables a broad set of mod integrations, so tech, storage and magic blocks report their own state directly. Some of the highlights for automation builders are below.[6]

  • Applied Energistics 2: grid node state, charger, crafting monitor, pattern provider and power storage all report, plus part names, icons and tooltips for cable parts.[6]
  • Mekanism: chemical, fluid and energy readouts with Mekanism's own tooltip renderer, and the built-in generic readout removed so you don't get duplicate lines.[6]
  • Pipes and routing: Pipez pipes, Modern Industrialization pipes and overclock state, and Modular Routers routers.[6]
  • Storage: Functional Storage drawers, DimStorage blocks and tanks, Entangled blocks and XyCraft tank and extractor components.[6]
  • PneumaticCraft: pneumatic pressure, redstone, camouflage, semiblocks, tube modules and entities.[6]
  • Farming and bees: Mystical Agriculture crops, Inferium crops and infused farmland (including the Mystical Agradditions variant), plus Productive Bees bees, attributes, jars, canvas hives and solitary nests.[6]
  • Railcraft: locomotives, signals, switch tracks and track components.[6]

Jade's own identification plugins are handled differently. The mod name line is on, but block face, block properties, block states, coordinates, relative coordinates and distance are all turned off, and registry name is set to OFF with special IDs disabled. The result is a clean tooltip focused on what a block is doing rather than its technical identity.[6]

Tip: If you want registry names or coordinates back for debugging a build, those are per-plugin toggles in the plugin settings, so you can flip them on without touching anything else.[4][6]

Targets the pack hides

Jade keeps ignore lists for blocks and entities that should never be targeted. The pack hides barrier blocks, and hides area effect clouds, firework rockets, interaction entities, text displays and lightning bolts. That last group matters in practice: interaction and text display entities are used all over modded content, and without this list they would constantly steal your tooltip from the block behind them.[7][8]

Client, server and accessibility

Jade can be installed client-side only, but many features need it on the server as well, including item storage, brewing stand fuel amount and bees in beehives. On a pack server that ships Jade, you get the full set.[1]

Jade has a narrator that reads your target aloud. The pack leaves text to speech disabled, with the TTS mode set to PRESS, so nothing narrates until you turn the feature on yourself.[4][5]

Item mod name tooltips (the line telling you which mod an item comes from) are off in the pack config, though the styling is pre-set to blue italics if you enable it.[4][5]

Default keys

  • Keypad 0 opens the configuration screen, where every option above lives.[1]
  • Keypad 1 toggles the overlay, which is the key that matters most in the pack's TOGGLE display mode.[1][5]
  • Keypad 2 toggles the liquid display.[1]
  • Keypad 3 and Keypad 4 show recipes and uses for your target, and both require JEI.[1]
  • Keypad 5 narrates the target.[1]

Unverified The show-details key that gates Jade's lite mode and the detailed item storage amount is a separate binding from the overlay toggle; its default key is not listed in the sources available here, so check the controls menu in game.

Which Jade 🔍 config options matter?

4 parts

Jade is the HUD that tells you what you're looking at, and this pack ships a full set of config files for it. Below are the options you're most likely to touch, with the exact values this pack uses. If you want to change things in-game, the default key for the configuration screen is Keypad 0.[1][5]

Unverified The sources show the values this pack uses but not the Jade mod defaults, so I can't say which of the values below were changed from default.

What Jade shows and how

Overlay look and position

Extra info lines

The pack keeps the tooltip fairly clean. jade.block_face, jade.block_properties, jade.block_states, jade.coordinates, jade.coordinates.rel and jade.distance are all false. jade.registry_name is OFF, while jade.mod_name is true, so you still see which mod a block belongs to.[6]

Storage and mob details are tuned like this: minecraft.item_storage.normal_amount is 9, minecraft.item_storage.detailed_amount is 54, minecraft.item_storage.items_per_line is 9, and minecraft.item_storage.show_name_amount is 5. For mobs, minecraft.entity_health.icons_per_line is 10, minecraft.entity_health.max_for_render is 40, and minecraft.entity_armor.max_for_render is 20. minecraft.entity_health.show_fractions is false.[6]

For the harvest tool line, minecraft.harvest_tool.effective_tool is true, while minecraft.harvest_tool.creative, minecraft.harvest_tool.new_line and minecraft.harvest_tool.show_unbreakable are false. The detailed energy and fluid readouts, minecraft.energy_storage.detailed and minecraft.fluid_storage.detailed, are also false.[6]

Things Jade ignores

The pack hides one block from Jade: barrier, via values.[7]

values hides these entities: area_effect_cloud, firework_rocket, interaction, text_display and lightning_bolt. You can add more registry ids to either list.[7][8]

Tip: Jade can be installed on the client only, but many features need it on the server too, such as item storage, brewing stand fuel amount and bees in a beehive. If one of those lines is missing, check that first.[1]

What changed in Jade 🔍 between versions?

3 parts

All the Mods 10 0.51 ships Jade 15.3.4 for NeoForge, and Jade has been in the pack since 0.32 or earlier. Below are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first.[2]
