What is Jade 🔍?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide

Jade is an information HUD mod. It shows you information about whatever block or entity you're looking at. It's a fork of Hwyla/Waila, the classic 'what am I looking at?' tooltip mods, rebuilt for modern Minecraft with a focus on a better user experience and a better API.[1]

This pack ships Jade 15.9.2 for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been part of the pack since version 1.3 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the setup.[2]

Jade is for pretty much every player. In a big modded pack you'll constantly run into blocks and machines you don't recognise, and Jade lets you identify them just by looking at them. Compared to Hwyla, Jade brings these improvements:[1]

  • A redesigned API.[1]
  • More vanilla addons.[1]
  • More configuration options.[1]
  • Better accessibility, including a key that narrates your target.[1]

Jade can run on the client side only, but many of its features need Jade on the server side as well. Examples are showing item storage, the fuel amount in a brewing stand, and the bees inside a beehive.[1]

Default keys

  • Keypad 0 opens the configuration screen.[1]
  • Keypad 1 toggles the overlay.[1]
  • Keypad 2 toggles the liquid display.[1]
  • Keypad 3 shows recipes for what you're looking at (requires JEI).[1]
  • Keypad 4 shows uses for what you're looking at (requires JEI).[1]
  • Keypad 5 narrates your target.[1]
Tip: If the overlay gets in your way or shows too much, press Keypad 0 to open Jade's configuration screen and adjust it to your liking.[1]

Unverified The sources don't confirm whether this pack changes any of Jade's default keybinds or settings, or whether a given server has Jade installed. Server-dependent features may not show up on every server.

How do you get started with Jade 🔍?

2 parts

Jade is the information HUD: it shows you what you are looking at. There is nothing to craft to get going. Your first steps are learning a few keys and knowing what this pack's config does with the tooltip.[1]

Jade can be installed on the client only, but many features need it on the server side too, such as item storage, brewing stand fuel amount and bees in a beehive. If a tooltip looks thinner than you expect on a server, that is the first thing to check.[1]

First steps, in order

  1. Look at any block or mob. In this pack the tooltip is on for blocks, entities and bosses, so you should see it straight away.[3]
  2. Open the configuration screen with Keypad 0, Jade's default key for it. Use it to see what each option does before you change anything.[1]
  3. Learn the toggle key. Keypad 1 toggles the overlay by default. The pack sets general.displayMode to TOGGLE, which means the display keybind switches the tooltip on and off.[1][3][4]
  4. If you use JEI, look at something and press Keypad 3 to show recipes or Keypad 4 to show uses. Keypad 2 toggles liquid display and Keypad 5 narrates the target.[1]

What this pack sets up for you

The pack uses the dark theme with a background opacity of 0.7, and it centres the overlay horizontally at 0.5. See overlay.activeTheme, overlay.alpha and overlay.overlayPosX. The vertical position is 1 in overlay.overlayPosY. The tooltip is also hidden while the debug screen or the player list is showing, and a boss bar pushes the tooltip down instead of covering it.[3]

The pack also turns off some extra lines in the Jade core plugin: coordinates, relative coordinates, distance and block face are all false, block states is false, and the registry name is set to OFF. Mod name is on, so you can still see which mod something comes from. If you want any of those lines back, flip them in the config screen or in jade.coordinates and its neighbours.[5]

Plugins for many other mods in the pack are switched on. The one exception I can see is avaritia.compressor, which is false.[5]

Tip: Some things never show a tooltip. The pack's block blocklist hides minecraft:barrier, and the entity blocklist hides the area effect cloud, firework rocket, interaction, text display and lightning bolt. Both files say you can add registry ids to the values list, and that you must restart the game for changes to apply. See values and values.[6][7]

How does Jade 🔍 work?

5 parts

Jade has no machines, multiblocks, power or fluid systems of its own, and no recipes in this pack produce its items. It is an information HUD: it shows information about what you are looking at. So the core mechanics here are about how the tooltip gets its data and how the pack configures it.[1]

Client and server

Jade can be installed on the client side only, but many features need it on the server too. The examples given are item storage, brewing stand fuel amount and bees in a beehive. If a chest or machine tooltip looks empty on a server, that is the first thing to think about.[1]

Showing and hiding the tooltip

In this pack the display mode is set to TOGGLE in general.displayMode. In that mode the display keybind switches the tooltip on and off. The other modes are Hold, where the keybind must be held, and Lite, where you hold the Show Details key for further information.[3][4]

Fluid targeting is set to ANY in general.fluidMode. The Fallback option would only show a fluid when there is no other target.[3][4]

The default keys are:[1]

  • Keypad 0 opens the configuration screen.[1]
  • Keypad 1 toggles the overlay.[1]
  • Keypad 2 toggles liquid display.[1]
  • Keypad 3 shows recipes and Keypad 4 shows uses (both need JEI).[1]
  • Keypad 5 narrates the target.[1]

How storage and energy readouts behave

Energy, fluid and item storage readouts are all enabled: minecraft.energy_storage, minecraft.fluid_storage and minecraft.item_storage. The detailed-only options for energy and fluid (minecraft.energy_storage.detailed and minecraft.fluid_storage.detailed) are false, so that information is not hidden behind the Show Details key.[4][5]

Item storage uses these pack values: minecraft.item_storage.normal_amount is 9 and minecraft.item_storage.detailed_amount is 54. The first is how many items show normally and the second is how many show while Show Details is pressed. Items are laid out 9 per line (minecraft.item_storage.items_per_line). Item names are shown instead of just icons up to 5 items (minecraft.item_storage.show_name_amount).[4][5]

Mod-specific plugins

Jade reads machine data through plugins that are toggled one by one in the same file as jade.mod_name. In this pack that file lists plugins for many mods, for example mekanism.energy, extendedcrafting.crafting_core and compactmachines.machine, and nearly all are set to true. The one exception among the mod plugins is avaritia.compressor, which the pack sets to false. The sources do not say what each plugin displays, so check in game.[5]

The core Jade lines are set like this: jade.mod_name is on, while jade.block_face, jade.coordinates and jade.distance are off. jade.registry_name is "OFF". Block states (minecraft.block_states) are also off.[5]

Tip: If you want coordinates or distance in the tooltip, they are off in this pack. Jade describes coordinates as showing the position of the target and distance as the distance between you and the target. Turn them on in the Jade config screen (Keypad 0 by default).[1][4][5]

Blocklists and sort order

Jade keeps blocklists for targets it should ignore. Changes to them need a game restart. The block list contains only Barrier. The entity list contains area effect clouds, firework rockets, interactions, text displays and lightning bolts.[6][7]

The file sort-order.json lists the same plugin ids in a different form, such as ae2:power_storage, and in this pack every entry is null.[8]

Which Jade 🔍 config options matter?

4 parts

Jade is set up through a handful of files in the config/jade folder. The main look and behaviour live in jade.json, the per-feature switches live in plugins.json, and two small blocklists decide what Jade ignores. Here are the values this pack uses that you're most likely to care about.[3][5][6][7]

Overlay look and behaviour

What the tooltip shows

In plugins.json, this pack turns off jade.block_face, jade.coordinates, jade.coordinates.rel, jade.distance and minecraft.block_states. jade.registry_name is set to "OFF", while jade.mod_name stays on. The mod-specific entry avaritia.compressor is also false.[5]

The detailed readouts are off too: minecraft.energy_storage.detailed and minecraft.fluid_storage.detailed are false, and so are minecraft.entity_health.show_fractions, minecraft.harvest_tool.creative, minecraft.harvest_tool.new_line and minecraft.harvest_tool.show_unbreakable. minecraft.harvest_tool.effective_tool is on.[5]

Storage and health display

Tip: Jade can be installed only on the client side, but many features need it on the server too, including item storage, brewing stand fuel amount and bees in a beehive. If those readouts are missing on a server, that is the first thing to check.[1]

Hidden targets

The block blocklist, values, contains only Barrier. The entity blocklist, values, lists minecraft:area_effect_cloud, minecraft:firework_rocket, minecraft:interaction, minecraft:text_display and minecraft:lightning_bolt. Both files say you can add registry ids to the list and must restart the game to apply changes.[6][7]

The sort-order.json file has every entry set to null in this pack, so it carries no custom ordering values.[8]

Unverified Which of these values differ from Jade's own defaults is not confirmed by the pack files, so treat them simply as how this pack is configured.

What changed in Jade 🔍 between versions?

2 parts

Project Infinity 0.1 0.0.51.4-hotfix-2 ships Jade 🔍 11.13.3 for Forge (file Jade-1.20.1-Forge-11.13.3.jar). It has been in the pack since 0.0.45.4 or earlier. The notes below come from Jade's own changelogs.[9]

Jade 11.13.0 to 11.13.3

  • 11.13.3 (the version in this pack): adds a fallback fluid mode.[9][10]
  • 11.13.2: fixes the offset of modded boss bars and a crash (CCE) in the mob spawner provider. It also suppresses getDestroyProgress errors, updates the Ukrainian translation and fixes a problem building Jade locally.[10][11]
  • 11.13.1: adds a workaround so Jade addons are blamed correctly.[10][11]
  • 11.13.0: filters large bitmap glyphs and improves how Jade blames the correct mod ("blame the correct mod 2.0").[10][11]

Jade 11.12.1 to 11.12.3

  • 11.12.3: fixes the extension provider lookup.[10][11]
  • 11.12.2: fixes a CME (concurrent modification crash) when registering keybinds.[10][11]
  • 11.12.1: removes some mod-name appending code that seemed pointless, and fixes an incompatibility with Leawind's Third Person.[11]
