What is Functional Storage?
2 parts
Functional Storage is a storage mod built around drawers: blocks that hold lots of stacks of the same item, which is handy for things like Cobblestone and Dirt. This pack includes version 1.21.1-1.5.8.[1][2]
Where it sits in the quest book
The mod is covered in the Basic Storage chapter ("Basic Storage" quest), which is chapter 16 of 66 in the quest book and belongs to the Storage group. The chapter has 89 quests and covers ways to store items without needing power. Functional Storage shares it with Vanilla Storage, Sophisticated Storage, Sophisticated Backpacks, Trash Cans and Dimensional Storage. The text of 47 of the chapter's quests is not included in the sources here, so check the quest book for the full list.[2]
The mod's own entry is "Functional Storage" quest, with the subtitle "Storage Drawers Distant Relative". Its task is simply having a vanilla chest. Right after it comes a quest in "Basic Storage", which introduces the drawers themselves.[2]
What branches off from there
Several upgrade quests follow straight after the drawers quest: Collector Upgrade, Iron Downgrade, Pusher Upgrade, Puller Upgrade, Void Upgrade and Redstone Upgrade. The storage upgrades form their own chain, labelled in the quest book as x8, x16, x24 and x32: Copper Upgrade, then Gold Upgrade, Diamond Upgrade and Netherite Upgrade.[2]
The Linking Tool quest (a quest in "Basic Storage") also follows the drawers quest, and most of the rest of the mod hangs off it. That includes the Storage Controller, Configuration Tool, Ender Drawer, Compacting Drawer, Simple Compacting Drawer, the fluid drawers and the framed drawers. The Controller Access Point quest comes after the controller quest.[2]
Unverified Whether the ATM Star quest path uses Functional Storage is not shown in the sources here. Check the quest book for how the Basic Storage chapter relates to that path.
How do you get started with Functional Storage?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Functional Storage is all about drawers, and this pack's Basic Storage quest chapter walks you through the mod in a sensible order. The order I'd follow: a drawer first, then storage upgrades, then the Linking Tool and a controller to tie it all together, then the Configuration Tool to lock things down.[3]
Craft a drawer
Everything starts with a drawer. Wooden drawers come in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 sizes, for example Birch Drawer (1x1), Birch Drawer (1x2) and Birch Drawer (2x2). The pack has changed these recipes. Make a few, because many of the tool and upgrade recipes in this mod take a drawer as an ingredient.[4]

Birch is just one example of the wooden drawers, which the pack has changed.
Grow your capacity with storage upgrades
Storage upgrades are a tier chain. The Copper Upgrade is an x8 upgrade ("Copper Upgrade" quest), the Gold Upgrade is x16 ("Gold Upgrade" quest), the Diamond Upgrade is x24 ("Diamond Upgrade" quest) and the Netherite Upgrade is x32 ("Netherite Upgrade" quest). Each tier is crafted from the previous one, so start with copper. The Netherite Upgrade uses a smithing recipe instead of a crafting grid.[3][4]

The pack changed this recipe, and it is the first step of the upgrade chain.
Link everything to a controller
Once you have several drawers, craft the Linking Tool and the Storage Controller. The tool has one mode that links a single drawer to a controller and another that links multiple drawers between 2 points. In the quest book, the Linking Tool quest (a quest in "Basic Storage") leads on to the controller quest (a quest in "Basic Storage").[3][4][5]

- Place the controller, then right-click it with the Linking Tool to start configuring.[3]
- Right-click each drawer you want to add to the network. While you hold the tool, it shows which drawers are connected.[3]
- Double right-click the controller to pull in everything from your inventory that has a slot in the network.[3]
- Sneak right-click the controller with an empty hand to open the upgrades tab. Normal storage upgrades there increase its range, up to 40 blocks on every side (a cube of 80x80x80).[3]
The Controller Access Point acts as a Storage Controller when linked to one. You can push items into it or pull them out of it, so it works as an entry point to your drawers.[3]
Lock your drawers
The Configuration Tool locks a drawer so it remembers the item inside. A locked drawer won't swap that item for something else, which matters once you start pushing items into and pulling them out of drawers automatically.[3]

Extras to unlock next
In the quest book, the Configuration Tool, controller, compacting, Ender, fluid and framed drawer quests all come after the Linking Tool quest. The pusher, puller, void, collector and redstone upgrades hang off an earlier quest instead. Pick whichever fits your base.[3]
- Pusher Upgrade and Puller Upgrade let a drawer push items out of or pull them in from any side. Each one can be crafted into the other.[3][4]
- Void Upgrade voids extra items when a drawer is full, which stops a setup from backing up.[3]
- Collector Upgrade makes a drawer vacuum in items from one of its sides.[3]
- Redstone Upgrade outputs a signal from 0 (empty) to 15 (full) on all sides.[3]
- Compacting Drawer converts what you put in to its nugget or block form. For example, an iron ingot lets you pull out 9 nuggets.[3]
- Two Ender Drawer blocks can sync their contents, like an Ender Chest. Left-click the first with the Linking Tool, then crouch and right-click the second.[3]
- Fluid Drawer (1x1), Fluid Drawer (1x2) and Fluid Drawer (2x2) work like regular drawers but store fluids.[3]
- Framed Drawer (1x1) and the other framed drawers can mimic a block's texture on the outside and a different one on the front.[3]
How does Functional Storage work?
7 parts
Functional Storage is built around drawers: storage blocks that you place, upgrade and link to controllers. This section covers what the pack's data and text files confirm: drawer types, fluid handling, controllers, upgrades and the Armory Cabinet.[5][6][7][8]
Drawer types and sizes
Every drawer comes in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 layouts. You get them in the vanilla wood types, for example Birch Drawer (1x2) and Cherry Drawer (2x2). There are also framed versions such as Framed Drawer (1x1) and fluid versions.[5][6][7][8]
The mod groups drawers with tags. The general drawer tag covers the wooden and framed drawers in all layouts, but not the fluid drawers. Those have their own fluid drawer tag.[9][10]
The pack changed the drawer recipes, so check the pack version below rather than the mod's defaults.[11]

Crouch and right click a drawer to open its GUI.[5]
Fluid drawers
Fluid Drawer (1x1), Fluid Drawer (1x2) and Fluid Drawer (2x2) store fluids instead of items. Their GUI shows the fluid and the amount. Hints in the mod's text tell you that you can empty a container into the drawer or fill a container from it.[5][10]

Compacting and Ender drawers
The mod has the Compacting Drawer and the Framed Compacting Drawer, plus Simple Compacting Drawer variants, including a framed one. It also has the Ender Drawer. The pack changed the recipes for these.[5][11]

Controllers and linking
The mod has a Storage Controller and a Framed Storage Controller. You extend them with the Controller Access Point, called the Controller Access Point, which also has a framed version. The controller screens use labels such as Range and Priority.[5]
The Linking Tool connects drawers to a controller. In single mode it links a drawer to a controller. In multiple mode it links multiple drawers between 2 points.[5]

Upgrades and automation
The mod's item list includes the Copper Upgrade, Gold Upgrade, Diamond Upgrade, Netherite Upgrade and Max Storage Upgrade. Storage upgrade descriptions work in one of these ways: they increase a base value, decrease it, or set it to a fixed value.[5]
For automation the mod lists the Puller Upgrade, Pusher Upgrade, Redstone Upgrade, Void Upgrade and the Collector Upgrade. The text for the direction and slot settings on these utility items says to right click in a GUI to change them.[5]
The mod also has an Iron Downgrade, described as downgrading the slots to a max of 64 items.[5]
Some upgrades generate fluids, and their description reads Generates a number of mb of a fluid. The mod includes the Water Generator Upgrade, the Obsidian Generator Upgrade and the Dripping Upgrade.[5]

Armory Cabinet
The Armory Cabinet is a storage block for gear, and its GUI has a search box. Its insertable list covers swords, axes, hoes, pickaxes, shovels, helmets, chestplates, leggings and boots. It also takes bows, crossbows, tridents and maces, along with elytra, shields, fishing rods, flint and steel, shears, brushes and enchanted books.[5][12]

The mod's item and fluid denylist tags for drawer storage ship empty, as does the tag for Creative Vending Upgrade incompatibility, so they block nothing by default.[13][14][15]
Unverified Drawer slot capacities, storage upgrade multipliers, controller range and puller and pusher speeds are not shown by the sources here. Such values would normally be set in the mod's config file, and no config files for this mod were available, so treat them as unverified.
How do you progress through Functional Storage?
4 parts
In this pack, Functional Storage sits in the Basic Storage chapter of the quest book, in the Storage group (chapter 16 of 66). The intro quest "Functional Storage" quest asks for a chest, and a quest in "Basic Storage" comes right after it. Almost everything else in the mod branches off that second quest.[2]
The Tips and Tricks chapter has its own short quest, "Functional Storage" quest. It pitches drawers as the answer for items you get a lot of, like Cobblestone or Seeds, and says they can be upgraded to hold even more stacks.[16]
Your first drawers
Drawers come in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 layouts, and the quest says they hold stacks of 1, 2 or 4 items depending on the type. The wooden drawer recipes are all changed by the pack, and the plainest one, the Oak Drawer (1x1), is built from a wooden chest.[2][11]

The storage upgrade tiers
The main progression path is the chain of storage upgrades. The quest book labels them by multiplier and chains them in order:[2]
- Copper Upgrade is the first tier, labelled x8 Storage Upgrade, in quest "Copper Upgrade" quest.[2]
- Gold Upgrade is labelled x16 and comes after the Copper Upgrade quest ("Gold Upgrade" quest).[2]
- Diamond Upgrade is labelled x24 and comes after the Gold Upgrade quest ("Diamond Upgrade" quest).[2]
- Netherite Upgrade is labelled x32 and comes after the Diamond Upgrade quest ("Netherite Upgrade" quest).[2]
The pack changed all four recipes. Each tier from Gold up uses the previous upgrade as an ingredient, so you can't skip ahead. The Netherite Upgrade is a smithing recipe rather than a crafting grid recipe.[11]

Utility upgrades
These quests also hang off Stacks on Stacks, so you can grab them in any order:[2]
- Iron Downgrade lowers a drawer's max space to a single stack, handy for keeping items on stock without hoarding too many.[2]
- Collector Upgrade makes the drawer vacuum items in from one of its sides.[2]
- Pusher Upgrade pushes items out into any side, and Puller Upgrade pulls items in from any side.[2]
- Void Upgrade voids extra items that arrive when the drawer is full, which stops a setup from backing up.[2]
- Redstone Upgrade outputs a Redstone signal on all sides, from 0 (empty) to 15 (full).[2]
The Pusher and Puller can be turned into each other with a shapeless craft, so a wrong pick costs you nothing.[11]
The Linking Tool branch
The Linking Tool quest (a quest in "Basic Storage") opens the second branch. The tool links drawers to a controller and links up Ender Drawers. These quests all come after it:[2]
- The framed drawers can copy a block's texture on the outside and a different one on the front.[2]
- Ender Drawer: link two of them with the Linking Tool to sync their contents, like an Ender Chest in drawer form.[2]
- Compacting Drawer converts stored items to their nugget or block forms. Simple Compacting Drawer auto-converts the item into its compacted form.[2]
- The fluid drawers (Fluid Drawer (1x1), Fluid Drawer (1x2) and Fluid Drawer (2x2)) work like regular drawers but store fluids.[2]
- Configuration Tool locks drawers so they remember their item.[2]
- Storage Controller (a quest in "Basic Storage") acts as a hub for linked drawers. Normal storage upgrades in its upgrade tab increase its range, up to 40 blocks on every side (an 80x80x80 cube).[2]
After the controller, a quest in "Basic Storage" covers the Controller Access Point, which acts as a Storage Controller entry point for pushing into and pulling from the drawers. The pack changed the recipes for these tools and drawers too.[2][11]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Functional Storage?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Functional Storage has a single quest chapter in the pack, called Basic Storage. Every quest in it asks you to get one of the mod's items (or one of a small group of variants). Nearly all of them hang off one earlier quest in the chapter that the sources don't show, so I can't tell you what that first step is.[3]
Upgrades and downgrades unlocked first
These quests all unlock straight after that opening quest, so you can do them in any order. Each one is a single upgrade item.[3]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Collector Upgrade, which makes a drawer vacuum items in from one of its sides.[3]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Pusher Upgrade, which lets drawers push items out into any side.[3]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Puller Upgrade, which lets drawers pull items in from any side.[3]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Void Upgrade, which voids extra items once a drawer is full. That stops overflow and keeps a setup from backing up.[3]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Redstone Upgrade. Drawers then output a redstone signal where 0 means empty and 15 means full.[3]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Iron Downgrade, which cuts a drawer's max space down to a single stack. It's handy for keeping some items in stock without hoarding too many.[3]
The storage upgrade line
The storage upgrades form their own chain. Each quest unlocks after the previous one, and the quest subtitles give the multiplier for each tier.[3]
- "Copper Upgrade" quest: the Copper Upgrade, an x8 storage upgrade.[3]
- "Gold Upgrade" quest: the Gold Upgrade, an x16 storage upgrade.[3]
- "Diamond Upgrade" quest: the Diamond Upgrade, an x24 storage upgrade.[3]
- "Netherite Upgrade" quest: the Netherite Upgrade, an x32 storage upgrade.[3]
The Linking Tool branch
a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Linking Tool, which links drawers to a controller and links Ender Drawers together. It also opens up most of the rest of the chapter.[3]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" accepts any framed drawer, framed compacting drawer, framed controller or framed controller extension, such as the Framed Drawer (1x1) or Framed Storage Controller. Framed blocks can mimic a block's texture on the outside and a different one on the front.[3]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Ender Drawer. You can link two of them with the Linking Tool to sync their contents, like an Ender Chest.[3]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Compacting Drawer, which converts items to their nugget or block forms and back. An iron ingot inside lets you pull out 9 nuggets.[3]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Simple Compacting Drawer, which auto-converts the item inside into its compacted form.[3]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" accepts any of the fluid drawers: Fluid Drawer (1x1), Fluid Drawer (1x2) or Fluid Drawer (2x2).[3]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Configuration Tool, which locks a drawer so it remembers its item. That's useful when you push and pull from drawers.[3]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Storage Controller (the framed version also counts for the second task). The quest text gives its max range as 40 blocks on all sides, a cube of 80x80x80.[3]
The last quest in the chapter is a quest in "Basic Storage", which unlocks after the controller quest. It asks for the Controller Access Point, an entry point that acts like the Storage Controller when linked to it.[3]
