What is Ars Nouveau?

2 parts

Ars Nouveau is a magic mod built around crafting your own spells. You also make magical artifacts and trinkets, perform rituals, power machines, and automate your base with adorable magical servants. This pack includes version 5.13.1.[1][2]

It's a great fit if you like building a spell that suits exactly what you need, or if you want cute helpers doing the chores for you. The mod's documentation lives in-game in Patchouli. To start, craft the Worn Notebook from a book and 1 Lapis Lazuli.[1]

Where it fits in the progression

The pack gives Ars Nouveau its own quest chapter. You begin with the Novice Spell Book ("Spell Books" quest), where you create and store spells. It only lets you use Tier 1 glyphs, so you'll upgrade it as you go. The Mage's Spell Book raises your mana and mana regen and unlocks Tier 2 glyphs.[3]

The final upgrade, the Archmage Spell Book, requires you to have killed the Wilden Chimera. That fight is a ritual you complete at a Ritual Brazier.[3]

The quest chain for the crafting side runs like this:[3]

  1. Build an Imbuement Chamber ("Imbuement Chamber" quest). It needs Source, makes a small amount by itself, and can also draw from Source Jars.[3]
  2. Put Lapis or Amethyst Shards into it to make Source Gem ("Source Gems" quest), the iron of Ars.[3]
  3. Use Source Gems to craft Sourcestone ("Sourcestone" quest), the base for the machines.[3]
  4. Make Arcane Pedestal blocks ("Arcane Pedestals" quest). The quest suggests 8, and you need them for the Ritual Brazier and the Enchanting Apparatus.[3]
  5. Set up the Enchanting Apparatus on top of an Arcane Core, surrounded by pedestals ("Enchanting Apparatus" quest).[3]

The ATM Star path

Ars Nouveau is part of the ATM Star path. The Enchanting Apparatus quest leads into a quest in the chapter The ATM Star that asks for the Focus of Summoning.[3][4]

Tip: Ars essences matter a lot. The pack's quest says you need them for virtually every spell and Enchanting Apparatus recipe, so plan for them early.[3]

How do you get started with Ars Nouveau?

5 parts

Ars Nouveau has its own quest chapter in this pack, and the order below follows it. The goal is simple: get a spellbook, set up a supply of Source, then unlock better glyphs.[3]

Make your first spellbook

Start with the Novice Spell Book ("Spell Books" quest). It's where you create and store your spells. Press the C key to open the 'Create a Spell' page. It has several tabs, and the main three are Spell Creation, Color Picker and Familiars. The Novice book only lets you create and use Tier 1 glyphs, so you'll want to upgrade it later.[3]

Get Source flowing

After the Archwood quest, the chapter opens up the Imbuement Chamber ("Imbuement Chamber" quest). It makes the Source Gem, one of the main crafting items in Ars. It needs Source to imbue items. It produces a small amount on its own and can also draw from Source Jars. Several recipes also need Arcane Pedestals placed around it.[3]

Pedestals go around the Imbuement Chamber for the recipes that need them.

To get Source Gem ("Source Gems" quest), put Lapis or Amethyst Shards into the chamber and wait. They convert over time. Then grab a Source Jar (a quest in "Ars Nouveau") to store Source. Source can also be moved with buckets, or by breaking and picking up the jar.[3]

Tip: The Dowsing Rod (a quest in "Ars Nouveau") gives you Magic Find and Scrying when used. It shows nearby magic creatures and helps you find amethyst, which is one of the two things you can turn into Source Gems.[3]

Sourcestone and essences

With Source Gems in hand, craft Sourcestone ("Sourcestone" quest). That's your way into crafting the various machines. The Enchanting Apparatus is one of the machines built from it.[3][5]

Keep an eye out for Ars essences ("Ars Essence" quest). The quest says you need them for virtually every spell and enchanting apparatus recipe.[3]

Unlock glyphs

The Scribe's Table ("Scribe's Table" quest) is how you learn new glyphs. There are 3 tiers, and each one requires some experience and items. Right-click the table with your spellbook, search for the glyph you want, then click Select. Right-click the table with the required items and the glyph is created. Use the glyph to learn it. The table can pull items from nearby inventories.[3]

The table also attaches spells to Spell Parchment. Place the parchment on the table, select the spell in your spellbook, then sneak right-click the book on the table.[3]

Upgrade the book

The Mage's Spell Book ("Mage's Spell Book" quest) raises your mana and mana regen and lets you use Tier 2 glyphs. The upgrade recipe is changed by the pack, so don't rely on the base mod's version. The block below shows the in-pack one.[3][5]

The final tier, the Archmage Spell Book ("Archmage Spell Book" quest), is a longer-term goal. The quest says you need to have killed the Wilden Chimera, which is a ritual done with a Ritual Brazier. Save this one for later.[3]

How does Ars Nouveau work?

5 parts

Ars Nouveau is built around powering magical machines and automating your base with magical servants. Its documentation is provided entirely in the in-game Patchouli book, so check it while you play.[1]

Most of the in-game guide text available for this section is only untranslated placeholder keys. I can't confirm the exact numbers for Source handling, relays or familiar automation, so I've kept this section to what the sources actually state.[6][7][8][9]

Pedestals and platforms

The Arcane Platform can be placed in any direction and can be used in place of a pedestal. That makes it handy when you want a flat or sideways layout around a multiblock-style setup. In this pack you make it by converting an Arcane Pedestal.[5][10]

Armor and threads

Threads can be slotted into magical armor to add extra effects. Armor can also be upgraded to new tiers, which unlocks additional and more powerful thread slots.[10]

Source generators

The pack includes Sourcelink recipes you can craft, such as the Agronomic Sourcelink and the Alchemical Sourcelink.[5]

Spirit Jars and automation

If you run the Occultism integration, spirits can work inside Containment Jars. They keep their original behavior and do not decay, which makes them well suited to automation.[11][12]

  • A Spirit Jar automatically picks up any item in a 7x7 area centered on it that matches the spirit's filter. For crushing spirits, that means any ore they can process.[12]
  • You can push items into the jar with a hopper or with starbuncles, and any pipe should also work. You can also right-click an item directly onto the jar.[12]
  • Spirits in jars behave as they normally do. A Crusher Spirit, for example, processes items and flings the output in one of the directions.[12]
  • Janitor Spirits in jars automatically try to pick up nearby items and push them into an inventory next to them.[12]

Pack changes

The pack changes the recipe for the Archwood Chest, so don't rely on the mod's default recipe. This is the in-pack version.[5]

How do you progress through Ars Nouveau?

4 parts

Ars Nouveau progression in this pack is built around two things: your spellbook tier and how far you've pushed the Source machine chain. The questbook walks you through both, so you can mostly just follow it.[3]

Spellbook tiers

You start with the Novice Spell Book ("Spell Books" quest). It only lets you create and use Tier 1 Glyphs. Press C to open the Create a Spell page, where the main tabs are Spell Creation, Color Picker and Familiars.[3]

The next step is the Mage's Spell Book ("Mage's Spell Book" quest). It raises your overall mana and mana regen and unlocks Tier 2 Glyphs. The pack changed this upgrade recipe, so check the one below rather than relying on what you remember from the base mod.[3][5]

The final tier is the Archmage Spell Book ("Archmage Spell Book" quest). The quest says you need to have killed the Wilden Chimera, and that this is a ritual you complete with a Ritual Brazier.[3]

Early machine chain

After the Archwood quest, the questbook sends you to the Imbuement Chamber ("Imbuement Chamber" quest). It makes Source Gem, which the quest calls the iron of Ars. Put Lapis or Amethyst Shards into the chamber and they slowly convert ("Source Gems" quest).[3]

Source Gems unlock Sourcestone ("Sourcestone" quest). Sourcestone leads to the Arcane Pedestal ("Arcane Pedestals" quest), and the quest suggests making 8 of them. Pedestals are needed for the Ritual Brazier and for the Enchanting Apparatus.[3]

The Enchanting Apparatus ("Enchanting Apparatus" quest) is a multiblock. You place an Arcane Core in the ground, put the Apparatus on top, and surround it with pedestals. It needs Source to work.[3]

The Source side branches off the Source Jar (a quest in "Ars Nouveau"). The sourcelink quests, such as the Volcanic Sourcelink, Agronomic Sourcelink and Mycelial Sourcelink, all follow from it.[3]

The Ritual Brazier ("Ritual Brazier" quest) also comes after the pedestals. The individual ritual quests hang off it.[3]

Glyph tiers

You unlock glyphs at the Scribe's Table ("Scribe's Table" quest). There are 3 tiers of glyphs, and each glyph costs some experience plus items. The table can pull items from nearby inventories.[3]

The questbook sorts glyphs into Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 groups. For example, Glyph Harm and Glyph Leap are in Tier 1, Glyph Heal and Glyph Aoe are in Tier 2, and Glyph Split and Glyph Blink are in Tier 3.[3]

The pack tweaks a few glyph recipes. Exchange and Extract (both Tier 2 in the questbook) use pack-changed recipes, and Wall (Tier 3) is a recipe the pack added.[3][5]

Tip: Essences are needed for virtually every spell and Enchanting Apparatus recipe, so start gathering them as soon as the Imbuement Chamber is running.[3]

After the Apparatus

Once the Enchanting Apparatus is built, the questbook opens up several gear and utility quests. They include the Enchanter's Wand, the Enchanter's Sword, the Dominion Wand, the Belt of Unstable Gifts, the Rings of Discount and the Focus of Summoning. The Rings of Discount give a small bonus to max mana and mana regen and also reduce spell cost.[3]

How does Ars Nouveau work with other mods?

3 parts

Ars Nouveau is wired into several other mods in this pack. Add-ons build on its Enchanting Apparatus, and the pack adds its own spell books and source jars on top of the base mod.[5]

Spell books and Source Jars

The Allthemodium Spell Book is a smithing upgrade of the Archmage Spell Book. The pack changed this recipe, so here is the exact in-pack version.[5]

Armor threads

Extra armor threads are Enchanting Apparatus recipes built around the Blank Thread. Flight, Spectral Sight, True Sight and Vitality come from the arcanist gear add-on. Reach comes from Ars Additions. Below are the in-pack recipes for the Flight and Reach threads.[5]

Add-ons that build on Ars Nouveau

In the quest book, the "Ars Essence" quest quest accepts Anima Essence from Ars Elemental as well as the regular Ars Nouveau essences.[3]

Watch out: Many of these recipes are marked as changed by the pack. If a recipe you remember from a standalone mod wiki does not match, trust the recipe shown on this page.[5]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Ars Nouveau?

5 parts

Everything for this mod lives in one chapter called Ars Nouveau. It runs from your first spellbook, through Source and the Enchanting Apparatus, to a long list of glyph, ritual and gear quests. The quest data I was given is cut off partway through, so the later part of the chapter may hold more quests than the ones below.[3]

Spellbooks

  1. "Spell Books" quest asks for the Novice Spell Book. It only lets you use Tier 1 Glyphs.[3]
  2. "Mage's Spell Book" quest asks for the Mage's Spell Book. It raises your mana and mana regen and unlocks Tier 2 Glyphs.[3]
  3. "Archmage Spell Book" quest asks for the Archmage Spell Book. The quest says you need to have killed the Wilden Chimera, which is a ritual done at a Ritual Brazier.[3]

Source and the core machines

After a quest called Archwood (not included in the sources I have), the chapter opens up. "Imbuement Chamber" quest asks for the Imbuement Chamber. Right behind it, "Source Gems" quest wants a Source Gem, made by putting Lapis or Amethyst Shards into the chamber.[3]

Archwood also leads to "Scribe's Table" quest for the Scribe's Table, which unlocks new glyphs in 3 tiers, and to a Dowsing Rod quest. Once you have Source Gems, "Ars Essence" quest asks you to get any one of the essences, and the quest says you need them for virtually every spell and Enchanting Apparatus recipe.[3]

Next come "Sourcestone" quest, then "Arcane Pedestals" quest, which asks for the Arcane Pedestal and suggests making 8 of them. After that is "Enchanting Apparatus" quest, which wants both the Enchanting Apparatus and the Arcane Core. The sources list this same run of quests (Spell Books through Enchanting Apparatus) as part of the ATM Star path.[3]

Source storage and power

Right after Source Gems you get a Storing Source quest for the Source Jar. Several power quests branch off it: the Volcanic Sourcelink, Vitalic Sourcelink, Agronomic Sourcelink and Mycelial Sourcelink. A Storing Potions quest for the Potion Jar also follows it. The Potion Jar leads on to the Alchemical Sourcelink.[3]

After the Enchanting Apparatus

Most of the gear quests unlock once you have the Enchanting Apparatus. They include the Enchanter's Wand, Enchanter's Sword, Enchanter's Bow, Enchanter's Shield and Enchanter's Mirror. Others ask for the Basic Spell Turret, Spell Prism, Dominion Wand, Magebloom Seed, Belt of Levitation and Belt of Unstable Gifts. There are also quests for the two Rings of Discount, the two mana Amulets, and foci such as the Focus of Summoning.[3]

The Focus of Summoning also has a separate quest in the ATM Star chapter, and that one also comes after the Enchanting Apparatus.[4]

"Drygmy Farming" quest is the trickiest quest. It asks for a Containment Jar plus an observation task, and it needs both the Enchanting Apparatus and the Containment ritual quest finished first. The quest text walks through the Drygmy setup: get a drygmy charm from a Lv4 Shady Wizard, then keep the jar within 10 blocks of the drygmy.[3]

Rituals and glyphs

"Ritual Brazier" quest comes after the Arcane Pedestals quest and asks for the Ritual Brazier. It then unlocks a long set of untitled quests, one per ritual item. They include Sanctuary, Fertility, Containment, Scrying, Summon Wilden, Harvest and Binding.[3]

The rest of the chapter is untitled glyph quests, each asking for a single glyph item. They follow the Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 Glyphs quests. Tier 1 examples are Glyph Harm and Glyph Leap. Tier 2 includes Glyph Heal and Glyph Aoe. Tier 3 includes Glyph Split and Glyph Lightning.[3]

What changed in Ars Nouveau between versions?

3 parts

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 ships Ars Nouveau 5.13.1 (ars_nouveau-1.21.1-5.13.1.jar). The mod has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier.[2]

There are no pack changelog entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs, from 5.10.3 up to 5.13.1. I only had changelogs for the versions listed here, so releases in between are not covered. These are changes to the mod itself, not pack tweaks.[2][13]

5.13.1 (the version in 2.0.4)

  • Projectiles now keep their momentum when they pass through spell prisms.[14]
  • Caster tome names and flavor text are now translatable entries, and the documentation gets more relations.[14]
  • Fixed a crash when glyph recipes have more than 10 items, jagged animation on items floating above the scribes table, and abjuration essence not clearing prestidigitation.[14]

5.11.1 to 5.11.3

  • 5.11.3: weather and time rituals can now work in other dimensions, and there is a config to stop Shady Villagers being converted (it does not remove existing ones).[15]
  • 5.11.3: several spell arrow fixes. Arrows with pierce no longer deflect off entities or phase through blocks, no longer cast spells twice, and no longer crash when reloaded from a save.[15]
  • 5.11.2: source jars can be linked to turrets to direct source consumption, and the Bookwyrm Lectern UI gains Bundle interactions. Archwood Boat was added.[16]
  • 5.11.2: fixes to spell damage calculations involving hex, fall damage and bastion effects, plus various Chimera AI and swimming fixes.[16]
  • 5.11.1: the spell crafting UI gets an Info icon covering importing/exporting spells and special keybinds for moving glyphs between slots. The particle effects UI gets a Clear button to reset the timeline to its defaults.[17]

5.10.3 to 5.10.6

  • 5.10.6: caster tomes support the particle timeline, there is a config to invert lectern scrolling, and Intangible gets a blacklist and no longer applies to the wrong blocks with AOE.[18]
  • 5.10.5: Underfoot can now target entities below the player and any player vehicles. Magical armor no longer drains mana when there is nothing to repair.[19]
  • 5.10.4: glyphs in the spellbook now show as one contiguous list, and decoys render player capes. Fixed a dupe with spell bows and infinity, and a memory leak when leaving and rejoining a world.[20]
  • 5.10.3: the Vitalic sourcelink baby growth tick range is now 15, matching the other events. Fixed amplify not increasing damage on wind shear, and filters not preventing runes from casting.[13]
