Sophisticated Storage is a mod in All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.1.0, where it is version 1.6.1. Storage mod with multiple tiers and functional upgrades (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Sophisticated Storage?

1 part

Sophisticated Storage 1.5.91 is part of the pack. It lets you upgrade chests and barrels with metals to get more storage, and you can add upgrades to give them extra functions. They behave like a vanilla Chest or Barrel, but with a slot for a Storage Upgrade.[1][2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The mod's quests are in the "Basic Storage" chapter, which has 94 quests and introduces the ways to store items without needing power. The starting point is "Sophisticated Storage" quest, and the rest of the mod's quests hang off it. The same chapter also covers vanilla storage, Sophisticated Backpacks, Functional Storage and Integrated Terminals, but those are their own quest chains.[2]

The chapter has 52 more quests that aren't shown here. You'll find the full set in the quest book itself.[2]

How do you get started with Sophisticated Storage?

4 parts

Sophisticated Storage lets you upgrade your Chests and Barrels with metals for more room, and add upgrades to give them extra functions. In this pack the quest book introduces it in the Basic Storage chapter with the quest "Sophisticated Storage" quest, and the steps below follow the order the quests set out.[2]

Start with a Sophisticated Chest

Begin by making a Chest. It works just like a vanilla Chest or Barrel, but it has a slot for a Storage Upgrade. This recipe turns a vanilla chest into one. The pack also has generic recipes for the chest and the Barrel.[2][3]

Climb the metal tiers

After that, the quest book takes you up through "Copper Chest" quest, "Iron Chest" quest, "Gold Chest" quest, "Diamond Chest" quest and finally "Netherite Chest" quest. Each quest accepts either the chest or the barrel version, so pick whichever you like.[2]

Tip: The Copper Chest is not needed to make an Iron Chest. Make it if you want to save some iron.[2]

Get the Upgrade Base

The Upgrade Base has its own quest, a quest in "Basic Storage", which comes after the main Sophisticated Storage quest. To keep the chapter from filling up with upgrades, the book points you to the Sophisticated Backpack upgrades. You make the Sophisticated Storage equivalents yourself, and they function about the same.[2]

Once you have a few storages, the Storage Controller lets you work with them as one big multiblock. Place storages next to the controller, or next to others already connected to it, up to 14 blocks away in all directions. The controller also acts as an in/out point for mods like Applied Energistics or Integrated Dynamics.[2]

To connect storages wirelessly, make the Storage Tool. Right click the controller to bind it, then right click each storage to link it. The range is the same 14 blocks.[2]

The Storage Link connects a separate group of storages to the controller without right clicking each one, and you use the Storage Tool to link it to the controller. It has its own quest, a quest in "Basic Storage", which comes after the controller and tool quests.[2][4]

How does Sophisticated Storage work?

5 parts

Sophisticated Storage is built around a few ideas: tiered barrels, chests and shulker boxes, upgrades that go in the storage itself, and a multiblock system that lets pipes and hoppers talk to a whole group of storages at once. Every recipe I could check for the mod in this pack is marked as changed by the pack, so don't trust the default recipes you remember from other modpacks.[3][4]

Storage multiblocks and automation

The Storage Controller is the heart of a multiblock. Its tooltip says it lets you deposit items into, and pipe items to and from, a connected multiblock of storages. So instead of piping into every single barrel, you hook up the controller and treat the whole group as one.[4]

A few small blocks help you shape and automate the multiblock:[4]

  • Storage Connector: bridges gaps between storage blocks in a storage multiblock, so you can keep things connected even when the storages aren't touching.[4]
  • Storage Input: lets you pipe items into the multiblock. Its tooltip says it is optimized for low TPS impact.[4]
  • Storage Output: lets you pipe items out of the multiblock.[4]
  • Storage I/O: does both, piping items to and from the multiblock through one block.[4]
  • Storage Link: connects a separate multiblock of storages to a controller. You use the Storage Tool to link it to the controller.[4]

Tiers and upgrading storage

Storage blocks come in tiers, and the language file lists barrels, chests and shulker boxes in iron, gold, diamond and netherite versions, plus copper versions of all three. Tier upgrades are items you apply to an existing storage. If you try to upgrade without enough of them, the game tells you that upgrading requires a certain number of the upgrade item.[4]

In this pack the upgrade chain is recipe-driven. The Basic Tier Upgrade itself has a pack-changed recipe:[3]

The Basic to Diamond Tier Upgrade is made from the Basic to Gold tier upgrade plus a diamond, and the Basic to Netherite Tier Upgrade is a shapeless recipe built on the diamond one plus a netherite ingot. So the higher upgrades are steps on the same ladder, not separate crafts from scratch.[3]

You can also upgrade the storage blocks directly. The Copper Barrel recipe takes a plain barrel and a copper ingot, and the limited netherite barrel takes the limited diamond barrel and a netherite ingot. Chests work in a similar way: the copper chest recipe takes a chest, with copper ingots and copper blocks.[3]

For shulker boxes, the pack lets you turn a vanilla shulker box into a Shulker Box with a lever. The Copper Shulker Box is made from a shulker shell and a copper chest.[3]

Upgrades inside a storage

Storages have upgrade slots, and the upgrade screens show several automation options. There are Hopper and Advanced Hopper settings, and I/O mode buttons named Disabled, Off, Pull, Push, and Push & Pull. The sources only list these button names, so open the screen in game to see how they apply to each side.[4]

Some upgrades are limited to one per storage. The game warns you if there is already a Compacting Upgrade or a Compression Upgrade in another upgrade slot. The Advanced Compacting Upgrade compacts items into their compressed variants, covering both 2x2 and 3x3 recipes, with more filtering options.[4]

The Advanced Alchemy Upgrade automatically uses potions, food with effects, or milk buckets, and has extra effect filtering options. In this pack it is an upgrade of the Alchemy Upgrade, and both recipes were changed by the pack.[3][4]

Breaking storages safely

The mod has a few safety checks when you break a full storage. If breaking it would drop too many item entities, the game refuses and suggests either another option or breaking it while sneaking to skip the check. A storage with an Infinity Upgrade can only be broken by admins.[4]

The mod also has a config option that makes all storages drop as packed items without needing packing tape. The game shows a message when that option is on. This pack has no mod config file in my sources, so I can't tell you whether it is switched on here.[4]

How do you progress through Sophisticated Storage?

4 parts

In this pack, Sophisticated Storage progression is a metal ladder, and the quest book walks you up it. Everything starts in the Basic Storage chapter with the "Sophisticated Storage" quest quest. It tells you that you can upgrade Chests and Barrels with metals to increase their storage, and add upgrades for extra functionality. These chests work like a vanilla Chest or Barrel, but with a slot for a Storage Upgrade.[2]

The tier ladder in the quest book

Each tier has its own quest, and each one accepts either the chest or the barrel version, so pick whichever you like. They chain in this order:[2]

  1. Start with the basic Chest or Barrel from the "Sophisticated Storage" quest quest.[2][3]
  2. Copper: "Copper Chest" quest asks for the Copper Chest or Copper Barrel.[2]
  3. Iron: "Iron Chest" quest comes after both the Sophisticated Storage and Copper Chest quests, and asks for the Iron Chest or Iron Barrel.[2]
  4. Gold: "Gold Chest" quest follows Iron and asks for the Gold Chest or Gold Barrel.[2]
  5. Diamond: "Diamond Chest" quest follows Gold and asks for the Diamond Chest or Diamond Barrel.[2]
  6. Netherite: "Netherite Chest" quest follows Diamond and asks for the Netherite Chest or Netherite Barrel. The quest calls it the biggest of the chests from Sophisticated Storage.[2]
Tip: Copper is a side step. The Copper Chest quest says you don't need it to make an Iron Chest, but you can use it if you want to save some iron.[2]

Linking it all together

After the Sophisticated Storage quest, the a quest in "Basic Storage" quest asks for the Storage Controller, which lets several storages work as one big multiblock. Storages connect by sitting next to the controller or next to storages already connected to it, up to 14 blocks away in all directions.[2]

After the controller, the a quest in "Basic Storage" quest gives you the Storage Tool. Right click the controller to bind it, then right click storages to link them wirelessly, with the same 14 block range. The a quest in "Basic Storage" quest comes after both of those. The Storage Link connects storages that aren't attached to a controller or its connected blocks, and the 14 block range still applies.[2]

Upgrades are the other branch. The a quest in "Basic Storage" quest asks for the Upgrade Base and says the Sophisticated Backpack upgrades work about the same as the storage ones, but you'll need to make the Sophisticated Storage versions.[2]

How does Sophisticated Storage work with other mods?

3 parts

Sophisticated Storage connects with other mods in two ways in this pack: its upgrades convert to and from Sophisticated Backpacks upgrades, and it has upgrades built around Chipped workstations. Its Storage Controller also works as an access point for storage network mods.[2][3]

Sophisticated Backpacks: swapping upgrades

The pack adds crafting recipes that turn a storage upgrade into its backpack twin. This covers the basics like the Magnet Upgrade, Pickup Upgrade and Void Upgrade, plus their advanced versions, the smelting family, the Chipped upgrades and the stack downgrades. These recipes are flagged as changed by the pack.[3]

Going the other way, backpack upgrades convert into storage upgrades too.[3]

Sophisticated Storage has upgrades that put Chipped workstations into your storage, one per workstation. The pack changed all of these recipes.[3]

Storage networks: Applied Energistics and Integrated Dynamics

The Storage Controller lets several storages act like one big multiblock. The quest (a quest in "Basic Storage") says this can be combined with Applied Energistics or Integrated Dynamics, because the controller acts as the in/out point for every storage attached to it.[2]

Place storages next to the controller, or next to ones already connected to it. This works up to 14 blocks away from the controller in all directions.[2]

If you don't want to place everything side by side, use the Storage Tool. Right-click the controller to bind it, then right-click each storage to link it wirelessly. The range is the same 14 blocks. The Storage Link connects storages that aren't attached to a controller or to blocks connected to it, with the same 14 blocks of range.[2]

Tip: The quest only describes the controller as an in/out point for these mods. It doesn't give setup steps for Applied Energistics or Integrated Dynamics, so check those mods' own pages for the details.[2]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Sophisticated Storage?

4 parts

Sophisticated Storage lives in the Basic Storage chapter of the quest book. It's a short, mostly linear line of quests, so you can follow it from top to bottom.[2]

Starting point

Everything begins with "Sophisticated Storage" quest. It introduces the mod as a way to upgrade your Chests and Barrels with metals for more storage, and to add upgrades for extra functionality. These chests behave like a vanilla Chest or Barrel, but with a slot for a Storage Upgrade.[2]

The chest tiers

The metal tiers come one after another, and each quest accepts either the chest or the barrel version of that tier.[2]

  1. "Copper Chest" quest: asks for a Copper Chest or Copper Barrel. The quest says you don't need it to make an Iron Chest, but it can save you some iron.[2]
  2. "Iron Chest" quest: asks for an Iron Chest or Iron Barrel. It comes after the starting quest and the Copper Chest quest.[2]
  3. "Gold Chest" quest: asks for a Gold Chest or Gold Barrel.[2]
  4. "Diamond Chest" quest: asks for a Diamond Chest or Diamond Barrel.[2]
  5. "Netherite Chest" quest: asks for a Netherite Chest or Netherite Barrel. The quest calls it the biggest chest from Sophisticated Storage.[2]

Upgrades and linking

Two more quests branch off the starting quest. a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Upgrade Base. It points you to the Sophisticated Backpack upgrades and says the Sophisticated Storage versions work about the same, though you'll need to make the Storage equivalents.[2]

a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Storage Controller. It lets several storages act like one big storage multiblock, and it can act as an in/out point for mods like Applied Energistics or Integrated Dynamics. Storages placed next to the controller, or next to ones already connected to it, join the network, up to 14 blocks away in all directions.[2]

Two quests follow the controller. a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Storage Tool. You right click the controller to bind it, then right click storages to link them wirelessly, with the same 14 block range. a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Storage Link. It comes after both the controller and tool quests, and it connects storages wirelessly without you right clicking each one.[2]

In the Create chapter

The Create chapter's "Stock Link" quest compares Create's Stock Links to Sophisticated Storage and AE2 as a way of combining inventories. It has no tasks for this mod. Part of that chapter, 24 of its 91 quests, isn't covered here, so check the quest book for the rest.[5]
