What is Sophisticated Backpacks?

1 part

Sophisticated Backpacks adds upgradable backpacks that can use filters to add nifty features. You can wear a backpack in your Curios Back slot, and you can dye it. This pack includes version 3.26.1 of the mod, and everything here is about that version.[1][2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The pack's quest book puts the mod in the chapter "Basic Storage", in the "Storage" group. It is chapter 30 of 70 in the book and has 89 quests. The chapter intro says you'll find all of the basic ways to store items without needing power. The entry quest is "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest, and it asks you for a Backpack. In the chapter it is listed right after the "Sophisticated Storage" quest quest, and the sources show no prerequisite for it.[2]

Everything else in the mod branches off from that quest:[2]

The chapter has more quests than the ones covered here. The rest are in the quest book, so check there for the full list.[2]

How do you get started with Sophisticated Backpacks?

4 parts

Welcome to Sophisticated Backpacks! In this pack the whole mod is laid out in the Basic Storage quest chapter, and it starts with the quest "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest. Here is the order I'd go in.[2]

Make your first backpack

Start with the plain Backpack. It's the first quest in the chapter, and the Copper Backpack and Upgrade Base quests both come after it. The pack changes this recipe from the mod's default, so use the one below.[2][3]

Once you have it, you can wear it in your Curios Back slot, and you can dye it. The quest describes these as upgradable backpacks that can use filters to add nifty features.[2]

Get the Upgrade Base

Next, grab the Upgrade Base. The quest says you need it to make backpack upgrades, and many of the upgrade recipes in the pack use it, so you'll want a few.[2][3]

Pick your first upgrades

With an Upgrade Base in hand, these are good early picks. Each one has its own quest in the chapter.[2]

  • Crafting Upgrade adds a Crafting Table screen to the backpack.[2]
  • Deposit Upgrade lets you Shift-Right Click an inventory to empty your backpack into it.[2]
  • Filter Upgrade adds a filter for items being pumped in or out of the backpack.[2]
  • Stack Upgrade Tier 1 increases stack size in the backpack by 2. Tiers 2, 3 and 4 raise it by 4, 8 and 16, and the quests follow on from one tier to the next.[2]

The pack changes these three recipes from the mod's defaults. Here they are as they work in this pack:[3]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work?

8 parts

Sophisticated Backpacks is built around one item with a lot of moving parts: the backpack holds your items, and upgrades in its upgrade slots add behaviour like smelting, magnets, tanks and mob catching. Everything below comes from this pack's server config and recipe list, so these are the values you will actually see in game.[3][4][5]

Backpack tiers

The tier of the backpack decides how many item slots and how many upgrade slots you get. All of these match the mod's own defaults in this pack, so nothing here has been nerfed or buffed.[5]

The pack changes the recipes for the backpack tiers, and they are shown below for the Backpack, the Copper Backpack and the Netherite Backpack. The Diamond Backpack is the tier just below the Netherite one.[3][5]

Upgrades and their limits

Upgrades start from an Upgrade Base, and the pack changes that recipe too. The Filter Upgrade is a simple example built on top of it.[3]

The pack limits how many copies of some upgrades a backpack can hold. The limit list allows 3 stack upgrades, 1 from the furnace_upgrades group and 1 from the jukebox_upgrades group per backpack (server.maxUpgradesPerStorage).[5]

The mod's own messages also say there can only be one Everlasting Upgrade, one Inception Upgrade, one Tool Swapper Upgrade and one Mob Catcher Upgrade per backpack.[4]

Stack upgrades will not make everything stack. The pack lists items that stay unstackable even with a stack upgrade, including the Immersive Engineering toolbox, the Supplementaries quiver, bundles and every colour of shulker box (server.stackUpgrade.nonStackableItems).[5]

Filters

Most upgrades use filter slots to decide which items they touch. Here are the filter slot counts in this pack.[5]

The void upgrades are set so they can always void, not only on overflow (server.voidUpgrade.voidAlwaysEnabled and server.advancedVoidUpgrade.voidAlwaysEnabled are both true). So be careful what you put in their filters.[5]

Pickup, magnets and moving items around

The Magnet Upgrade pulls in items within 3 blocks (server.magnetUpgrade.magnetRange).[5]

The Advanced Magnet Upgrade reaches 5 blocks (server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange).[5]

Deposit and Restock move stacks between the backpack and a nearby inventory, and the game tells you how many stacks moved or that nothing could be moved. If a chest or machine should be left alone, the pack has block lists for that, server.noInteractionBlocks and server.noConnectionBlocks, and both are empty here. Connections to backpacks are also allowed (server.allBlockConnectionsDisallowed is false).[4][5]

Active upgrades like magnets, pickup, cooking and feeding work in any backpack in your inventory, not only the worn one, because server.nerfs.onlyWornBackpackTriggersUpgrades is false.[5]

Cooking upgrades

The smelting upgrade has a speed multiplier of 1 (server.smeltingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier) and a fuel efficiency multiplier of 1 (server.smeltingUpgrade.fuelEfficiencyMultiplier), which means vanilla furnace speed and fuel use. The smoking, blasting and auto versions are set to the same multipliers in this pack.[5]

The auto versions also have input and fuel filter slots. The Auto-smelting Upgrade has 8 input filter slots (server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.inputFilterSlots).[5]

It has 4 fuel filter slots (server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.fuelFilterSlots).[5]

The pack lets you turn an Auto-smelting Upgrade into an Auto-smoking Upgrade with a recipe instead of crafting from scratch.[3]

Fluids and energy

The tank upgrade holds 4,000 mB per row of backpack slots (server.tankUpgrade.capacityPerSlotRow).[5]

Its transfer rate is 20 mB per operation as a base (server.tankUpgrade.maxInputOutput), and that, like the capacity, is multiplied by the number of rows and the stack multiplier.[5]

Fluid containers in tank slots are filled and drained one bucket's worth at a time, with a cooldown value of 20 between actions (server.tankUpgrade.autoFillDrainContainerCooldown).[5]

The battery upgrade works the same way for energy: it holds 10,000 FE per row of slots (server.batteryUpgrade.energyPerSlotRow).[5]

Its base transfer is 20 FE per operation (server.batteryUpgrade.maxInputOutput).[5]

The pump upgrade has 4 fluid filter slots (server.pumpUpgrade.filterSlots).[5]

Its base rate is 20 mB per operation (server.pumpUpgrade.maxInputOutput).[5]

The stack multiplier ratio for the tank (server.tankUpgrade.stackMultiplierRatio), battery (server.batteryUpgrade.stackMultiplierRatio) and pump (server.pumpUpgrade.stackMultiplierRatio) is left at 1 in this pack, so stack upgrades boost them as normal.[5]

The XP Pump can mend items with Mending (server.xpPumpUpgrade.mendingOn is true), using at most 5 experience points per operation (server.xpPumpUpgrade.maxXpPointsPerMending).[5]

Watch out: The backpack item itself can be filled and drained by other mods' tanks (server.itemFluidHandlerEnabled is true). The config notes that this has caused dupe bugs when done in item form, so avoid draining or filling a backpack that way.[5]

Mob catcher

Every captured mob takes up a block of empty backpack slots. The basic Mob Catcher Upgrade accepts mobs costing up to 18 slots (server.mobCatcherUpgrade.basicMaxSlotCost).[4][5]

The Advanced one goes up to 72 slots (server.mobCatcherUpgrade.advancedMaxSlotCost). Both are hard limits, not clamps.[5]

Hostile mobs have a slot cost multiplier of 2 (server.mobCatcherUpgrade.hostileMultiplier), and animals have a multiplier of 1 (server.mobCatcherUpgrade.animalMultiplier). The game also tells you that hostile mobs need the Advanced upgrade.[4][5]

Some things can never be captured: bosses, players, mobs with passengers or vehicles, and anything on the entity block list (server.mobCatcherUpgrade.entityBlockList). Only the owner can capture a mob, and you must release captured mobs before removing the upgrade.[4][5]

The Advanced Mob Catcher Upgrade is an upgrade of the Mob Catcher Upgrade in a recipe the pack changes.[3]

Backpacks inside backpacks, and the carry limit

The Inception Upgrade lets a backpack work with backpacks stored inside it, and it can only go in a top level backpack. In this pack, upgrades in the contained backpacks stay functional and use the inventories of backpacks inside the backpack (server.inceptionUpgrade.upgradesInContainedBackpacksAreFunctional and server.inceptionUpgrade.upgradesUseInventoriesOfBackpacksInBackpack are both true).[4][5]

The mod can slow you down if you carry too many backpacks, with the limit set to 3 before slowness would apply (server.nerfs.maxNumberOfBackpacks). The slowness switch is off here (server.nerfs.tooManyBackpacksSlowness is false), so the limit does not slow you down.[5]

Other players can open your worn backpack by right clicking your back, because server.allowOpeningOtherPlayerBackpacks is true. Each backpack also has a setting to turn this off.[4][5]

How do you progress through Sophisticated Backpacks?

4 parts

The pack walks you through Sophisticated Backpacks in the Basic Storage quest chapter. You start with a plain backpack, move up through the metal tiers one quest at a time, and then branch into upgrades. Every recipe below is the in-pack version, because the pack changes the recipes for this mod's items.[2][3]

The backpack tiers

The chain starts with the "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest quest, which asks for a plain Backpack. Its text points out that backpacks can go in your Curios Back slot and can be dyed.[2]

  1. Craft the Backpack to finish the first quest.[2][3]
  2. Upgrade it to the Copper Backpack for "Copper Backpack" quest.[2][3]
  3. Move on to the Iron Backpack. "Iron Backpack" quest needs both the first quest and the Copper Backpack quest done.[2][3]
  4. Next is the Gold Backpack ("Gold Backpack" quest), then the Diamond Backpack ("Diamond Backpack" quest).[2][3]
  5. The last step is the Netherite Backpack ("Netherite Backpack" quest), which follows the Diamond Backpack quest.[2][3]

Backpack upgrades

Almost every other upgrade quest follows the Upgrade Base quest (a quest in "Basic Storage"), which says you need the base to make backpack upgrades.[2]

The basic upgrades include the Crafting Upgrade, Smelting Upgrade, Blasting Upgrade, Smoking Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade, Jukebox Upgrade, Tank Upgrade and Battery Upgrade. The list also has the Pickup Upgrade, Magnet Upgrade, Feeding Upgrade and Void Upgrade. Other quests cover the Everlasting Upgrade, which makes the backpack unable to die, and the Inception Upgrade, which lets you put a backpack inside a backpack.[2]

Tip: The Smoking Upgrade and the Blasting Upgrade each have a second recipe that starts from the Smelting Upgrade. If you already have a Smelting Upgrade you can convert it instead of building a new one.[3]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work with other mods?

3 parts

In this pack, Sophisticated Backpacks connects to other mods through crafting recipes: Chipped, Sawmill and Sophisticated Storage. Every recipe below is marked as changed by the pack, so don't assume you'll see the mod's default recipes.[3]

Chipped workbench upgrades

There is a Backpack upgrade for each of seven Chipped workbenches. They give you the workbench's crafting screen right inside your Backpack.[2][3]

Here is the recipe for the Alchemy Bench version. The other Chipped upgrades are crafted the same way, each with its own Chipped workbench.[3]

Which All the Mons quests use Sophisticated Backpacks?

5 parts

Everything for this mod lives in one quest chapter, Basic Storage. It starts with a single backpack and branches into backpack tiers, basic upgrades, and advanced versions of many of those upgrades. Each quest asks you to obtain one item, except one that accepts any of several.[2]

Where it starts

The chapter opens with "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest, which asks for a Backpack. Its description says backpacks can use filters for extra features, can be worn in your Curios Back slot, and can be dyed. Two quests unlock from there: the backpack tier line and the upgrade base.[2]

Backpack tiers

  1. "Copper Backpack" quest asks for the Copper Backpack. It unlocks after the first quest.[2]
  2. "Iron Backpack" quest asks for the Iron Backpack. It needs both the first quest and the Copper Backpack quest.[2]
  3. "Gold Backpack" quest asks for the Gold Backpack.[2]
  4. "Diamond Backpack" quest asks for the Diamond Backpack.[2]
  5. "Netherite Backpack" quest asks for the Netherite Backpack.[2]

The upgrade base and basic upgrades

a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Upgrade Base, which the quest says you need to make backpack upgrades. Nearly every basic upgrade quest unlocks after it, so you can do them in any order. They are:[2]

Stack upgrades

The stack upgrades are a separate chain. "Stack Upgrade Tier 1" quest unlocks after the upgrade base and increases stack size in the backpack by 2. Then comes "Stack Upgrade Tier 2" quest (4), "Stack Upgrade Tier 3" quest (8) and "Stack Upgrade Tier 4" quest (16), each unlocking after the previous tier.[2]

Advanced and automatic upgrades

Most basic upgrades have a follow-up quest titled "More Filtering Options" that unlocks after its basic version. These ask for the advanced item:[2]

The furnace-style upgrades have their own "Automatic" follow-ups: "Auto-Smelting Upgrade" quest (Auto-smelting Upgrade), "Auto-Blasting Upgrade" quest (Auto-blasting Upgrade) and "Auto-Smoking Upgrade" quest (Auto-smoking Upgrade). Each unlocks after its matching basic upgrade.[2]

The last quest in the chapter is "Experience Pump Upgrade" quest, titled "Storing XP". It asks for the Experience Pump Upgrade and unlocks after the Advanced Pump Upgrade quest. It lets you pump experience between you and the backpack.[2]

Which Sophisticated Backpacks config options matter?

4 parts

Everything here lives in the server config file for Sophisticated Backpacks. Every option that lists a mod default is set to that default in this pack, so the numbers below are the stock mod values, not pack tweaks.[5]

Backpack sizes

Each tier has its own inventory and upgrade slot count. These are the values in this pack:[5]

Upgrade limits and ranges

server.maxUpgradesPerStorage caps how many of each upgrade type one backpack can hold. This pack allows 3 stack upgrades, 1 furnace-type upgrade and 1 jukebox upgrade per backpack.[5]

The basic magnet upgrade picks up items within 3 blocks (server.magnetUpgrade.magnetRange). The advanced magnet reaches 5 blocks (server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange).[5]

The tank upgrade holds 4000 mB per row of storage slots (server.tankUpgrade.capacityPerSlotRow).[5]

The battery upgrade holds 10,000 FE per row of storage slots (server.batteryUpgrade.energyPerSlotRow).[5]

The plain smelting upgrade runs at the vanilla furnace speed: its speed multiplier is 1 (server.smeltingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier) and its fuel efficiency multiplier is 1 (server.smeltingUpgrade.fuelEfficiencyMultiplier).[5]

Carrying too many backpacks

server.nerfs.tooManyBackpacksSlowness is false here, so carrying a pile of backpacks does not slow you down. The limit setting is 3 (server.nerfs.maxNumberOfBackpacks), but it only matters if someone turns the slowness on.[5]

server.nerfs.onlyWornBackpackTriggersUpgrades is false, so active upgrades like magnet and pickup are not limited to the backpack you are wearing. server.allowOpeningOtherPlayerBackpacks is true, so on a server you can right-click another player's worn backpack to open it.[5]

Tip: On a multiplayer server, server.allowOpeningOtherPlayerBackpacks is the one to look at first. Turning it off removes that ability for everyone.[5]

Mobs wearing backpacks

Mobs can spawn wearing a backpack with a chance of 0.01 (server.entityBackpackAdditions.chance). A mob killed by a player drops its backpack with a chance of 0.5 (server.entityBackpackAdditions.backpackDropChance).[5]

When a mob does spawn with a backpack, the tier is picked by weight, and the cheap tiers are far more common:[5]

The list in server.entityBackpackAdditions.discBlockList keeps two Botania Gaia records from being played by backpack-wearing mobs. Mobs getting a jukebox upgrade is off anyway, since server.entityBackpackAdditions.playJukebox is false.[5]
