Functional Storage is a mod in All the Mons 1.3.0, where it is version 1.21.1-1.5.8. Functional Storage is an alternative take on the drawer storage solution, with an updated look and additional functionalities! (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Functional Storage?

3 parts

Functional Storage is a drawer-based storage mod. Instead of chests, you build Drawers that each hold a large amount of one item, and you can wire them together into a network. This pack includes version 1.21.1-1.5.8 of the mod.[1][2]

It isn't only for items. The quest book points out that Fluid Drawer (1x1), Fluid Drawer (1x2) and Fluid Drawer (2x2) work like regular Drawers but store fluids.[2]

What you can build with it

  • A hub for your Drawers: the Storage Controller becomes the center of a network once you link Drawers to it with the Linking Tool. Its range can be extended with storage upgrades, up to 40 blocks in every direction (an 80x80x80 cube).[2]
  • Extra entry points: the Controller Access Point acts as a Storage Controller when linked, so you can push into it and pull from it.[2]
  • Auto-compacting: the Compacting Drawer and Simple Compacting Drawer convert what you put in to its compacted form.[2]
  • Shared storage: two Ender Drawer blocks can be linked with the Linking Tool to sync their contents, much like an Ender Chest.[2]
  • Custom looks: framed Drawers such as Framed Drawer (1x1) can mimic a block's texture on the outside and a different one on the front.[2]

Automation helpers

If you build item systems, the quests highlight several tools. The Puller Upgrade and Pusher Upgrade let Drawers pull items in or push them out. The Void Upgrade voids excess items so a setup doesn't back up when the storage is full. The Configuration Tool locks a Drawer so it keeps remembering its item, which helps with push and pull systems.[2]

Where it fits in the progression

The mod is covered in the Basic Storage quest chapter, where nearly every quest unlocks after the Linking Tool or the early Drawer quests. The capacity upgrades form their own chain: "Copper Upgrade" quest (labeled x8), then "Gold Upgrade" quest (x16), "Diamond Upgrade" quest (x24) and "Netherite Upgrade" quest (x32).[2]

Unverified The sources don't say how the pack changes this mod's recipes, configs or tier gating, so check the in-pack recipes before planning around them.

How do you get started with Functional Storage?

7 parts

Functional Storage is all about drawers. In this pack, a lot of the mod's recipes use a drawer as an ingredient, and the pack has changed those recipes. Trust the recipe cards below over what you remember from other packs. The quests in the Basic Storage chapter follow the same progression.[2][3]

Make a basic drawer

Start with a wooden drawer, because most of the other recipes need one. Each wood type has its own recipe, and the pack changes them. Here is the Acacia 1x1 as an example: Acacia Drawer (1x1). The 1x2 and 2x2 sizes have their own recipes too, for example Acacia Drawer (1x2) and Acacia Drawer (2x2).[3]

Get the Linking Tool

The Linking Tool has its own quest, a quest in "Basic Storage". The quests for the controller, framed drawers, Ender Drawers, compacting drawers, fluid drawers and the Configuration Tool all unlock after it. The tool links drawers to a controller. It has a single mode that links one drawer to a controller and a multiple mode that links drawers between two points.[2][4]

Build a Storage Controller

The Storage Controller is the hub of your drawers (quest a quest in "Basic Storage"). Right click the controller to start configuring, then right click drawers with the Linking Tool to add them to the network. Holding the tool shows which drawers are connected. Double right-clicking the controller pulls in everything in your inventory that has a slot in the network.[2]

Sneak right-click it with an empty hand to open the upgrades tab. Adding normal storage upgrades there extends its range. The quest gives the maximum range as 40 blocks on all sides, a cube of 80x80x80.[2]

Lock drawers with the Configuration Tool

The Configuration Tool locks a drawer so it remembers its item. A locked drawer won't replace the item it was locked to. That matters once you start pushing items into and pulling them out of drawers automatically.[2]

Storage upgrades

The storage upgrade quests unlock one after another: Copper Upgrade (x8), Gold Upgrade (x16), Diamond Upgrade (x24) and Netherite Upgrade (x32). Each one builds on the one before it. The Netherite Upgrade is made at a smithing table in this pack.[2][3]

Handy extras

  • Pusher Upgrade lets a drawer push items out of any side, and Puller Upgrade lets it pull items in from any side. Each can be crafted from the other.[2][3]
  • Collector Upgrade makes a drawer vacuum items in from one of its sides.[2]
  • Void Upgrade voids extra items when a drawer is full, which stops overflow and keeps a setup from backing up.[2]
  • Iron Downgrade cuts a drawer's max space down to a stack, which is handy for keeping an item in stock without hoarding it.[2]
  • Redstone Upgrade makes a drawer output a Redstone signal showing how full it is, from 0 (empty) to 15 (full).[2]

Where to go next

How does Functional Storage work?

7 parts

Functional Storage is built around drawers: blocks that hold a lot of one kind of thing in each slot. In this pack you can open a drawer's GUI by right clicking it while crouching.[4]

Drawer types

Standard drawers come in three layouts, 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2, and in a version for each vanilla wood, for example Acacia Drawer (1x1), Acacia Drawer (1x2) and Acacia Drawer (2x2). The pack changed these recipes.[3][4]

Framed Drawer (1x1), Framed Drawer (1x2) and Framed Drawer (2x2) are the framed versions, which the pack also changed. You can turn an existing drawer into a framed one with the separate "from simple" recipes, which copy the drawer's data across.[3][4]

The mod also has fluid drawers in the same three layouts, and an Ender Drawer. With a fluid drawer, the GUI hints tell you there is one action to empty a container into the drawer and another to fill a container from it.[3][4]

Compacting drawers

Compacting Drawer stores an item along with its compressed forms in one block. The mod also has simple compacting drawers and framed versions of both. The pack changed the Compacting Drawer recipe, and the Framed Compacting Drawer is made from a plain Compacting Drawer.[3][4]

The pack adds custom compacting rules. 8 Tiny Charcoal compact into Charcoal, and 8 Tiny Coal compact into Coal. Compacting drawers can use them like any other pair.[5]

The pack also adds several items to the tag functionalstorage:ignore_crafting_check: Snowball, String, Honeycomb, Magma Cream, Pollen Puff, Draconic Dust and Obsidian Shard.[6][7][8]

Controllers and linking

The Storage Controller and Framed Storage Controller connect your drawers, and the Controller Access Point and its framed version give you another way in. The GUI has a Range setting and a Priority setting.[4]

The Linking Tool has two modes. Single mode links one drawer to a controller. Multiple mode links several drawers between 2 points. There is also a Configuration Tool.[4]

Storage upgrades

The capacity upgrades are Copper Upgrade, Gold Upgrade, Diamond Upgrade and Netherite Upgrade. The pack changed the recipe for each one. The recipes below show how they chain.[3]

The mod's upgrade tooltips describe increasing a base value, decreasing it, or setting it outright. The Iron Downgrade limits slots to a maximum of 64 items. There are also a Max Storage Upgrade and a Creative Vending Upgrade.[4]

Unverified The exact capacity each storage upgrade gives is not confirmed in the available sources.

Utility upgrades and automation

Utility upgrades add behaviour to a drawer: Puller Upgrade, Pusher Upgrade, Collector Upgrade, Redstone Upgrade and Void Upgrade. Their tooltips show a Direction and a Slot, and you change each by right clicking in the GUI.[4]

The pack changed the Collector Upgrade recipe. The Puller and Pusher Upgrades convert into each other with a single shapeless craft, so you can swap one for the other.[3]

Generator upgrades

The Water Generator Upgrade and Dripping Upgrade generate fluid inside a drawer. Their tooltip shows an amount in mb and the fluid. The Obsidian Generator Upgrade combines the two, and its recipe is shown below.[3][4]

Armory Cabinet

The Armory Cabinet has its own GUI with a Search field. The pack changed its recipe.[3][4]

How do you progress through Functional Storage?

4 parts

Functional Storage progression in this pack is laid out in the Basic Storage quest chapter. You start with the tools that tie drawers together, then branch into special drawer types, utility upgrades and a four-step storage upgrade ladder. Every recipe below is the in-pack version, and the pack has changed most of them from the mod's defaults.[2][3]

The quest a quest in "Basic Storage" hands you the Linking Tool. Right-click a controller to start configuring it, then right-click drawers to add them to the network. While you hold the tool, it shows which drawers are connected to the controller.[2]

Once a controller is down, the Controller Access Point (quest a quest in "Basic Storage") works as an extra entry point. When linked, it acts like the controller, so you can push into it and pull from it.[2]

The storage upgrade ladder

Capacity upgrades form a straight quest chain, and each quest unlocks after the previous one. The quest names give the multiplier for each tier.[2]

  1. Copper Upgrade (quest "Copper Upgrade" quest): x8 storage upgrade.[2]
  2. Gold Upgrade (quest "Gold Upgrade" quest): x16 storage upgrade.[2]
  3. Diamond Upgrade (quest "Diamond Upgrade" quest): x24 storage upgrade.[2]
  4. Netherite Upgrade (quest "Netherite Upgrade" quest): x32 storage upgrade.[2]

Each of these has its own quest, and they all unlock from the same earlier quest as the Linking Tool.[2]

Tip: The Iron Downgrade is handy when you want to keep an item on stock, but not too many of it.[2]

The Pusher and Puller Upgrades can be crafted into each other with a shapeless recipe, so you can switch from one to the other whenever your setup needs it.[3]

Which All the Mons quests use Functional Storage?

3 parts

All of this mod's quests sit in one chapter, Basic Storage. Every quest asks you to hand in a Functional Storage item, so you can't miss what each one wants. The order is set by which quest unlocks which, and it branches out like a tree.[2]

First tier: upgrades and the Linking Tool

A group of quests unlocks after the same earlier quest in the chapter. The Linking Tool quest in this group is the key one, because most of the drawer quests hang off it.[2]

Second tier: drawers and tools after the Linking Tool

Once you finish the Linking Tool quest, these open up:[2]

After the Storage Controller quest, a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Controller Access Point. It acts as an entry point to the Drawers when linked to a Controller.[2]

The storage upgrade chain

The storage upgrades form a straight line, each unlocked by the one before. "Copper Upgrade" quest asks for the Copper Upgrade (x8). Then "Gold Upgrade" quest asks for the Gold Upgrade (x16), "Diamond Upgrade" quest for the Diamond Upgrade (x24), and finally "Netherite Upgrade" quest for the Netherite Upgrade (x32).[2]

Unverified Most quests in this chapter unlock after one earlier quest (ID 2746575C929B6C50). What that quest asks for isn't covered by the available sources.
