What is Productive Metalworks?

3 parts

Productive Metalworks is the pack's foundry-and-casting mod. This pack includes version 1.21.1-1.14.0 of it, and it has been in the pack since 0.3.0-beta or earlier.[1]

What it does here

In this pack, Productive Metalworks is paired with Silent Gear. The quest book describes it as taking the best of both worlds between Silent Gear and Tinker's Construct. It changes how you obtain Silent Gear items: instead of Blueprints, you use casts and a Foundry.[2]

The mod is for you if you want a smelt-and-cast workflow for your Silent Gear tools and parts. You start the chain with Fire Clay in the quest "Silent Gear and Productive Metalworks" quest.[2]

How the progression flows

  1. Build the Foundry. Besides the Controller, Drains and Tanks, you need Liquid Heating Coil for the floor and either Foundry Windows or Fire Bricks for the walls. It needs 4 walls and a floor, and the corners can stay empty. See "Building the Foundry" quest.[2]
  2. Check that it is complete. The Controller lights up like a Furnace and the Liquid Heating Coils turn orange. If a block is missing, the Controller tells you where.[2]
  3. Get the metal out. Put a Foundry Tap on a Foundry Drain and place a casting block beneath it. See "Casting Items" quest.[2]
  4. Cast it. A Casting Basin turns about 900mB of liquid metal into a full metal block. The Casting Table is the block you need for making casts.[2]
Tip: The Foundry can be as small as 1x1 on the inside, but the quest text recommends going bigger because a larger Foundry has more space inside it.[2]

Casts in the quest book

The quest chapter has follow-up quests for these casts: Ingot Cast, Nugget Cast, Plate Cast, Rod Cast, Gear Cast and Gem Cast.[2]

Unverified The sources do not show Productive Metalworks on the ATM Star quest path, and no platform metadata is available for the mod.

How do you get started with Productive Metalworks?

4 parts

In this pack, Silent Gear items are not made from Blueprints. Productive Metalworks changes that: you need Casts and a Foundry instead. So your first goal is to build a Foundry, then use it to make Casts. Here is the order I'd go in.[2]

Start with Fire Clay

Everything starts with Fire Clay. It is the task of the first quest, "Silent Gear and Productive Metalworks" quest, and the quest tells you to begin the Foundry with it.[2]

Build the Foundry

The quest "Building the Foundry" quest says the Foundry needs a Controller, Drains and Tanks. It also needs Liquid Heating Coil blocks, which form the floor and heat the Foundry. For the rest of the structure you use either Foundry Windows or Fire Bricks.[2]

  • The Foundry needs 4 walls and a floor. The corners can stay empty.[2]
  • The in-game Ponder scene gives the minimum size as 3x3x2, because at least one air block is needed inside the structure. The quest says the inside can be as small as 1x1, but a bigger Foundry has more space in it.[2][3]
  • The bottom must be made of Heating Coils. You also need a Foundry Controller, a Foundry Tank and at least one Foundry Drain.[3]
  • If a block is missing, the Controller tells you where. When the structure is complete, the Controller lights up like a Furnace and the Heating Coils turn orange.[2]
Tip: The Foundry needs fuel in a Foundry Tank to work. You can right-click a bucket into the tank, or supply fuel with a pipe.[3]

Get the metal out

You can drop items straight into the Foundry or add them through the Controller GUI, and after some time they turn into liquid. To get the liquid out, place a Foundry Tap on a Drain. Then right-click the tap to extract the liquid.[2][3]

Make your Casts

Casts replace Blueprints for Silent Gear. The pack has quests for the Ingot Cast, Nugget Cast, Gem Cast, Rod Cast, Plate Cast and Gear Cast. On the Casting Table you add the item by right-clicking with it in hand, then pour liquid over it.[2][3]

How does Productive Metalworks work?

5 parts

Productive Metalworks is a foundry mod: you melt things into molten metal, mix those fluids into alloys, and cast them back into items and blocks. The recipe types in this pack show the three steps: item melting, fluid alloying, and casting (item casting for things made with a cast, block casting for blocks).[4]

One honest note first: the in-game guide pages for this mod (Obtaining, Building, Structure, Casting and a separate gear chapter) are only available to me as page titles, not as text. So this section sticks to what the block names and the pack's recipes actually show.[5][6]

The foundry blocks

The foundry is built from named parts. The language file lists these block types:[3]

The recipes show that the colored parts belong together: crafting recipes use tags for fire bricks, foundry capacitors, controllers, drains, tanks and windows.[4]

Fire bricks and the controller

Everything starts with Fire Clay, which turns into Fire Brick in a smelting or a blasting recipe.[4]

Melting

Melting is the biggest part of the mod's recipes. The dump counts 248 item-melting recipes that take items from common tags and make this mod's fluids, covering 39 different results. A further 34 take vanilla Minecraft items and cover 16 results.[4]

A few examples of how much fluid you get: ancient debris melts into 200 Molten Ancient Debris, and a honeycomb gives 100 honey plus 50 Molten Wax.[4]

The pack changed several melting recipes, so do not assume the mod's defaults. Crushed raw aluminum, the honeycomb recipe, the Oritech copper gem and any nickel clump are all marked as changed by the pack. The recipes below show the exact in-pack amounts of Molten Aluminum, Molten Copper and Molten Nickel.[4]

Alloying

Alloying mixes fluids directly. The pack's version of the Molten Brass recipe is marked as changed by the pack. It takes 3 parts of a copper fluid and 1 part of a zinc fluid and makes 4 parts of brass. It uses fluid tags rather than fixed fluids, so any copper or zinc fluid that carries the right tag will work.[4]

Casting

Casting turns fluid back into solid things. Block casting makes blocks: the Black Foundry Capacitor is cast from black fire bricks and 1,000 Molten Redstone.[4]

Unverified The sources do not explain the foundry's required shape or size, what each heating coil does or how it is powered, how the Foundry Tap, Drain and Casting Table/Basin move fluid and items, or how to automate it. Check the in-game guide pages on building, structure and casting for those.

How do you progress through Productive Metalworks?

4 parts

The sources show a step-by-step path through the pack's quests rather than numbered tiers. Productive Metalworks changes how you get your Silent Gear items: instead of Blueprints, you need Casts and a Foundry. Here's the order the quests walk you through.[2]

Step 1: Fire Clay

The chapter starts with the quest "Silent Gear and Productive Metalworks" quest, and its task is to get Fire Clay. Everything else in the Foundry builds from there.[2]

Step 2: Build the Foundry

"Building the Foundry" quest comes after the quests for Foundry Drains, the Foundry Controller and Foundry Tanks. It asks for Liquid Heating Coil. The coils make up the floor of the Foundry and heat it up. For the rest of the structure you use either Foundry Windows or Fire Bricks.[2]

The Foundry is more forgiving than it looks. The frame doesn't need to be built out, so every corner can stay empty. It does need 4 walls and a floor, and the Controller tells you where a block is missing. The inside can be as small as 1x1, but a bigger Foundry has more space in it. You'll know it's done when the Controller lights up like a Furnace and the Liquid Heating Coils turn orange.[2]

Tip: Want your Foundry to match your base? The pack has dye recipes for fire bricks, controllers, drains, tanks, windows and capacitors in many colors, for example Blue Fire Bricks and Cyan Foundry Window.[4]

Step 3: Get the liquid metal out

"Casting Items" quest covers this step and asks for three items: Casting Table, Casting Basin and Foundry Tap. You place the Tap on a Foundry Drain, then put a casting block beneath it to receive the liquid metal.[2]

The Casting Basin turns about 900mB of liquid metal into a full metal block. The quest text points you to the Casting Table for the next step, which is making casts.[2]

Step 4: Casts

The last quests in the chapter each ask for one cast. They are the Ingot Cast (a quest in "Silent Gear"), Nugget Cast (a quest in "Silent Gear"), Gem Cast (a quest in "Silent Gear"), Rod Cast (a quest in "Silent Gear"), Plate Cast (a quest in "Silent Gear") and Gear Cast (a quest in "Silent Gear"). All of them follow a quest called "Casts".[2]

In the pack's recipe list, every cast is an item casting recipe that uses molten steel together with the matching item type. Here are the in-pack versions.[4]

How does Productive Metalworks work with other mods?

5 parts

Productive Metalworks is wired into several other mods in this pack. The pack adds or changes casting, melting and alloying recipes so that Oritech materials, Allthemodium metals, AllTheOres metals, brass and some Create items all pass through the Foundry. The Silent Gear quest chapter also leans on it. Here is what that looks like in practice.[2][4]

Oritech

The pack adds a set of Oritech compat recipes that feed Oritech materials into the Foundry. You can melt Oritech gems, small clumps and small dusts of copper, gold, iron, nickel and platinum into the matching Productive Metalworks molten metal. For example, Nickel Gem, Small Nickel Clump and Small Nickel Dust all melt into Molten Nickel.[4]

The Foundry can also alloy Oritech's special metals. The pack changed these alloying recipes:[4]

Molten AdamantChanged by the pack

Fluid Alloying (productivemetalworks)

Recipe id: oritech:compat/productivemetalworks/alloying/adamant

The adamant alloy, as the pack sets it up.

You then cast the results with an Ingot Cast to get Adamant Ingot, Biosteel Ingot, Duratium Ingot and Energite Ingot. A Gem Cast turns molten fluxite into Fluxite and biofuel into Biomass. The same compat set also casts AllTheOres metals: ingots of electrum, nickel, platinum and steel, nuggets of nickel and platinum, and blocks of electrum, nickel and steel.[4]

Allthemodium

Molten Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium can be cast into a full set of parts, and the pack changed these recipes. Use an Ingot Cast, Nugget Cast, Plate Cast, Rod Cast or Gear Cast to get the ingot, nugget, plate, rod or gear. For example, Molten Vibranium with a Gear Cast makes Vibranium Gear.[4]

Allthemodium also feeds the Foundry itself. Casting Soul Lava onto a Powered Heating Coil gives you a High Powered Heating Coil.[4]

High Powered Heating CoilChanged by the pack

Block Casting (productivemetalworks)

Recipe id: productivemetalworks:casting/atm/high_powered_heating_coil

The pack changed this recipe so the upgrade needs Soul Lava.

Create items, brass and copper

The pack's create group of casting recipes covers a few handy casts. A Nugget Cast with any molten copper makes an Copper Nugget. Any molten brass works with an Ingot Cast, Nugget Cast or Plate Cast to give Brass Ingot, Brass Nugget or Brass Plate. And Chocolate cast with an Ingot Cast makes a Bar of Chocolate.[4]

Dyed Fire Bricks

The pack adds a colourful set of block casting recipes. Each coloured Fire Bricks block is cast with Molten Redstone to make the matching Foundry Capacitor. For example, Amber Fire Bricks becomes Amber Foundry Capacitor. There is one capacitor recipe for every colour of fire bricks.[4]

Silent Gear

The Silent Gear chapter of the quest book pairs that mod with Productive Metalworks. It says you now get Silent Items using Casts and a Foundry instead of Blueprints. Start with "Silent Gear and Productive Metalworks" quest, which asks for Fire Clay, then follow "Building the Foundry" quest to build the Foundry. "Casting Items" quest comes next and covers getting liquid metal out with the Foundry Tap into a Casting Basin or a Casting Table.[2]

Which All the Mons quests use Productive Metalworks?

4 parts

Productive Metalworks has its quests in the Silent Gear chapter. The pack uses the mod to change how you get Silent Gear items: instead of Blueprints, you need Casts and a Foundry. The quests walk you through building that Foundry and then making the Casts.[2]

Step 1: Start with Fire Clay

The chapter opens with "Silent Gear and Productive Metalworks" quest. Its task is to obtain Fire Clay, which is where you begin on the Foundry.[2]

Step 2: Build the Foundry

"Building the Foundry" quest comes after the opening quest. It also comes after quests for the Foundry Drains, Controller and Tanks. Its first task is the Liquid Heating Coil, which forms the floor of the Foundry and heats it up. The rest of the structure uses either Foundry Windows or Fire Bricks.[2]

The quest text gives some handy building rules. You only need 4 walls and a floor, and the corners can stay empty. The Controller tells you where a block is missing. The inside can be as small as 1x1, but the quest recommends going bigger, since a bigger Foundry has more space in it. You know it's finished when the Controller lights up like a Furnace and the Liquid Heating Coils turn orange.[2]

Unverified The source only shows part of this quest's task list: the Liquid Heating Coil, plus a second item task that isn't readable. Check the quest book in game for the exact second requirement.

Step 3: Get the metal out

"Casting Items" quest follows Building the Foundry. It asks you to have a Casting Table, a Casting Basin and a Foundry Tap. You place the Tap on the Foundry Drain and put a casting block beneath it to catch the liquid metal.[2]

The quest text says the basin, which it calls the Casting Bin, turns about 900mB of liquid metal into a full metal block. The Casting Table is what you need for making Casts.[2]

Step 4: Collect the Casts

The last group of quests all come after a quest called Casts, which the source doesn't describe. Each one has a single task: obtain one type of Cast. The quests have no titles in the source, so they show up by ID.[2]
