Extreme Reactors is a mod in All the Mons 1.3.0, where it is version 1.21.1-2.4.28. Extreme Reactors is the original port of the 1.7.10 mod Big Reactors, by Erogenous Beef, rewritten for MC 1.9.4 / 1.10.x / 1.11 / 1.12.2 and 1.16.3 / 1.16.4 / 1.16.5 / 1.17.1 / 1.18.1 / 1.18.2 / 1.19 / 1.19.1 / 1.19.2 / 1.20 / 1.20.1 / 1.21 / 1.21.1 (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Extreme Reactors?

4 parts

Extreme Reactors is the pack's nuclear power mod. You build Reactors and Turbines as multiblock machines, which means you place lots of blocks next to each other and they form one big machine. The pack ships version 1.21.1-2.4.28.[1][2][3]

A Reactor can make power directly (passive cooling), or it can use its heat to vaporize a coolant (active cooling). That vapor then drives a Turbine rotor, which makes the power.[4][5][6]

The machines you will meet

  • Reactor and Turbine: the core of your power setup. Both come in Basic and Reinforced variants, and in this pack Basic Reactors top out at 5x5x5.[2][6]
  • Fluidizer: turns solid fuels into fluids, and can mix fuels to make new ones.[7]
  • Reprocessor: turns the waste from your Reactor back into new fuel or other resources.[8]
  • Energizer: stores a huge amount of energy.[9]

Who it is for

The mod's own guide says it suits both new and experienced modded players. Redstone signals and the various ports let you automate fuel, energy and waste handling.[2]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack has a dedicated Extreme Reactors quest chapter. It starts with "Graphite for Casings" quest, where you smelt Coal or Charcoal into Graphite Bar. From there it walks you through reactor parts, then "Our First Reactor" quest, the smallest passive reactor at 3x3x3. Building a Reactor larger than 5x5x5 needs Reinforced parts.[6]

Once you are collecting waste, the chapter moves on to "The Fluidizer" quest, built around the Fluidizer Controller.[6]

The ATM Star path

Extreme Reactors is part of the ATM Star path. The quest "Insanite Blocks" quest comes after the Extreme Reactors chapter and asks you to obtain an Insanite Block. The quest text says this goes through reprocessing in a Reprocessor, uses Rossinite, and involves Benitoite mined in the Nether. It also says Inanite, a different material with a very similar name, is needed as well.[10]

Tip: Basic parts only work with other Basic parts, so plan ahead before you commit to a Basic build you may want to outgrow.[6]

How do you get started with Extreme Reactors?

6 parts

Welcome to Extreme Reactors! Your first goal in this pack is the smallest reactor you can build: a passive 3x3x3 that makes power directly from burning fuel. The pack's quest chapter walks you through it, and the order below follows that quest line.[6]

Step 1: Make Graphite

Before you can build anything, smelt some coal or charcoal into Graphite Bar. Graphite, together with iron, is one of the main materials for reactor parts, so start stocking up. This is the first quest in the chapter: "Graphite for Casings" quest.[6][11]

Recipe id: bigreactors:smelting/graphite_from_coal

Charcoal works too, and the pack also has blasting versions of both recipes.

Step 2: Craft Reactor Casings

Reactor Casing (Basic) makes up the frame and walls of the reactor, and the handbook says you will craft a ton of them. You can swap the walls for Reactor Glass (Basic) if you want to see inside. Anything labeled "Basic" only works with other Basic parts. See "Reactor Building Components" quest.[6][12]

Step 3: Craft the Interaction Parts

You need power out and fuel in. The Reactor Active Forge Energy Power Tap (Basic) gives you a way to attach pipes and cables to take power out of the reactor. The pack changed its recipe from the mod default.[6][11]

Step 4: Craft the Controller, Control Rod and Fuel Rod

Every reactor needs exactly one Reactor Controller (Basic). Right-click it on a formed reactor to open the interface and turn the reactor on. The pack changed this recipe from the mod default too. See a quest in "Extreme Reactors".[6][11]

Step 5: Build and Start It

Build a 3x3x3 frame out of casings, with another casing in the middle of the bottom face. Put the Fuel Rod in the center and the Control Rod above it on the top face. The Controller usually goes in the middle of the front wall. Put one access port on the left and one on the right, and the power tap in the middle of the back wall. When the last block goes in, the reactor forms. This is the quest "Our First Reactor" quest.[6]

Tip: If nothing happens when you place the last block, right-click any block you placed. You will get an error message that explains what is wrong.[3]

To fuel it, right-click an access port, set it to Inlet mode and put your fuel ingots in the input slot. The reactor consumes them quickly and turns them into fuel. Then open the Controller and switch the reactor on. As it heats up, energy fills the internal buffer, and the power tap sends it to a connected cable or machine that can accept it. Set the other access port to output mode to collect waste.[3][6]

Watch out: Basic parts can only build a reactor up to 5x5x5. Bigger reactors need Reinforced parts.[6][13]

Where to Go Next

Your reactor produces waste, and the quest "Dealing with Waste" quest asks for Cyanite Ingot. After "Our First Reactor" quest, the quest book offers "Expanding Our Reactors" quest, "Dealing with Waste" quest and "The Fluidizer" quest. Once you are dealing with waste, "Reprocessing our Waste" quest leads to the Reprocessor and "Making Turbines" quest leads to Turbines.[6]

How does Extreme Reactors work?

8 parts

Extreme Reactors is built around multiblock machines: you place lots of blocks next to each other and the machine forms when the last one goes in. This pack includes the Reactor, the Turbine, the Energizer, the Fluidizer and the Reprocessor. Here is how each one works and how you hook it up to the rest of your base.[3][4][7][8][9][14]

The Reactor

A Reactor makes power with heat. Irradiated fuel heats up, moderators soak up part of the radiation and push heat away from the Fuel Rods toward the Casing, and that Casing Heat is what generates energy or vaporizes coolant. Radiation travels in every direction perpendicular to the Fuel Rod pile axis, so the layout of your interior matters.[15]

Moderators are blocks or fluids placed inside the Reactor. Each one converts radiation and conducts heat with different efficiency, and rare or expensive blocks usually do better than cheap ones. Only valid moderators are allowed: an invalid one stops the multiblock from forming. With Advanced Tooltips on (F3 + H), valid blocks and fluids show a moderator tooltip.[16][17]

If a Reactor won't form, right-click any block you placed to get an error message explaining what is wrong.[3]

Fuel rods and control rods

  • Fuel Rods go inside the Reactor in long piles, either all vertical (Y axis) or all horizontal (X or Z axis). You can't mix orientations.[18]
  • The first Fuel Rod in each pile must touch a Casing block, and the last must be followed by a Control Rod. Because of that, all Control Rods end up on the same face.[18]
  • Control Rods absorb neutron radiation, which slows or stops fuel consumption, heat and waste. Right-click one to name it (handy for Computer Port control) and set its insertion percentage, either for that rod or for all of them.[19]

By default there are four reactants: the fuels Yellorium and Blutonium, and their wastes Cyanite and Magentite. Cyanite comes out of the Reactor as Cyanite Ingot. Some wastes can be turned into new fuel in the Reprocessor.[20]

Passive vs. active cooling

A passively cooled Reactor generates energy directly from its heat and uses no external medium. An actively cooled Reactor uses a coolant that gets vaporized, and the vapor can drive one or more Turbines. For active cooling you need at least two Fluid Ports: one set to insert coolant and one set to extract vapor.[5][21][22]

By default, water is a valid coolant and steam is its vapor. Only valid coolants and vapors can be used in a Reactor or Turbine. The cycle closes when the Turbine condenses the vapor back into coolant.[23]

Watch out: In a passively cooled Reactor, any energy that doesn't fit in the Internal Energy Buffer is lost, so make sure something is pulling power out.[17]

The Turbine

A Turbine makes power by spinning its Rotor. Vapor is drawn from the Vapor Fluid Tank into the Rotor chamber at the flow rate you set in the Controller, and each Rotor Blade captures a little of it. With the Induction Coils engaged, energy depends on Rotor speed and on the average efficiency and drag of your coil blocks.[24]

Disengaging the coils lets the Rotor spin faster but extracts no energy. Engaging them extracts energy but adds drag. Blades capture vapor fully only up to their capacity, so efficiency drops if the input flow goes past it. As with moderators, only valid coil blocks are allowed around the Rotor shaft, and an invalid one prevents the Turbine from forming.[17][25]

The Rotor is one Rotor Bearing, a run of Rotor Shaft blocks reaching the opposite side where it ends against a Housing block, and Rotor Blades placed perpendicular to the shaft or beside another blade. The Basic Turbine tops out at 5x5x10 blocks and can use up to 1,000 mB/t of vapor.[26][27][28][29][30]

Ports, power and automation

Reactor and Turbine power taps convert energy on the fly when it leaves the internal buffer. The mod ships a Forge Energy tap, and a machine can only use one power system. Parts that touch the outside come in passive and active forms. A passive part does nothing by itself and waits for the neighbouring block to pull or push. An active part constantly tries to send out or pull in power, items or fluids, but doesn't let the neighbour take from it. Mixing both lets you shape your network.[31][32][33][34]

The pack changed the Basic Reactor's active Forge Energy tap recipe, so check the one below rather than assuming the mod default.[11]

Use the Extreme Wrench to flip input/output mode on Access Ports and Fluid Ports. It is tagged as a Forge wrench, so it should work with other mods too.[11][35]

  • Solid Access Port: turns ingots into reactants in inlet mode and outputs waste in outlet mode. A small material loss is unavoidable.[36]
  • Fuel Injection Port: moves fluid reactants in or out with no material loss, and is available on the Reinforced variant.[37]
  • Forge Fluid Port: moves coolant and vapor only, in or out depending on its mode.[38][39]
  • Mekanism Fluid Port: lets an actively cooled Reactor output vapor as a Mekanism Gas if a Rotary recipe exists for that fluid.[40]
  • Forge Charging Port: charges Forge Energy items from the machine. Put the item in the centre slot and it moves to the output slot when full. The eject button moves it immediately.[41][42]

Redstone Ports let you automate without computers. On a Reactor, input settings are On/Off, Eject Waste and Control Rods Insertion. Outputs can fire on casing heat, core heat, fuel richness, fuel amount, waste amount, energy stored, and coolant or vapor amount. On a Turbine, inputs are On/Off, Induction Coils and Flow Rate, and outputs cover rotor speed, coolant amount, vapor amount and energy stored. You will usually need two or more ports for full automation.[43][44]

For more complex automation, the Computer Port exposes methods to a connected computer. It needs an external computer mod, and at the moment CC is the only one supported.[45][46]

The Energizer

The Energizer is a big energy storage multiblock. It is at least 3x3x3, built from Casing blocks and other device parts, and the whole interior must be filled with Energy Cells. The Controller opens a GUI where you can switch it on or off and watch energy flow in and out.[9][47][48][49]

The Energizer has an Active FE Power Port and a Passive FE Power Port, both Forge Energy. The Active FE Power Port inserts and extracts energy and automatically pushes it into any connected FE block that accepts it. The Passive FE Power Port also handles both directions, but the connected block has to do the pulling or pushing itself. The FE Charging Port charges Forge Energy items from the stored energy.[50][51][52]

The pack changed several Energizer recipes, including the casing, the charging port and both FE power ports. The casing is the base for crafting the other parts.[11][53]

The Fluidizer

The Fluidizer turns solid fuels into fluids and mixes fuels to make new ones. It is also at least 3x3x3 and built from Casing plus the other parts. Glass can replace Casing on all faces but not the frame. Every part is mandatory except Glass and the Injectors, and the Injectors you install decide the mode.[7][54][55]

  • Solid mode: exactly one Solid Injector, turns a solid fuel source like an ingot into fluid fuel.[56]
  • Solid Mixing mode: exactly two Solid Injectors, turns two solids into fluid and mixes them into a new fuel.[56]
  • Fluid Mixing mode: exactly two Fluid Injectors, mixes two fluid fuels into a new one.[56]

You need exactly one Controller, and it sits on a vertical face. Power comes in through the Power Port from any Forge Energy cable or generator. Finished fuel leaves through the Output Port, and you can attach any pipe to pull it out automatically.[57][58][59]

The pack also changed the Fluidizer casing, controller and solid injector recipes.[11]

The Reprocessor

The Reprocessor recycles waste from the Reactor into new fuel or other resources. It is 3 by 3 and 7 blocks high, built from Casing and one of each other device part, and Glass can replace Casing on the vertical faces but not the frame.[8][60]

  • Waste Injector: takes waste from the Reactor, either by hand in its GUI or from a pipe.[61]
  • Fluid Injector: takes the fluids needed for reprocessing, and different wastes may need different fluids.[62]
  • Collector: acquires material from inside once a job finishes.[63]
  • Output Port: lets you extract the result manually or with a pipe.[64]
  • Power Port: takes power from any Forge Energy cable or generator.[65]

Unverified The Reinforced Reactor and Turbine maximum size can be changed in the Extreme Reactors config, up to 256 blocks, but the sources here do not show the pack's config values. Check that config file for the actual limit.

How do you progress through Extreme Reactors?

5 parts

Extreme Reactors in this pack is a quest-guided chain. The quests lead you from graphite to a small passive reactor, then Cyanite waste, a Reprocessor and Fluidizer, and finally the Insanite Block that feeds the ATM Star. Here's the path tier by tier, in the order the quests send you.[6][10]

Tier 1: Graphite and the Basic reactor

The chapter opens with "Graphite for Casings" quest. The quest asks you to smelt Coal or Charcoal into Graphite Bar, which it describes as one of the main reactor materials, together with iron. Blasting works too, if you prefer it.[6][11]

Next, "Reactor Building Components" quest asks for Reactor Casing (Basic) and Reactor Glass (Basic). The quest says "Basic" parts only work with other Basic parts, and that the biggest Basic reactor is 5x5x5. The in-game guide calls the Basic reactor the cheap starter option.[6][13]

After that the quests branch into three: "Interacting with the Reactor" quest for the power tap and solid access port, a quest in "Extreme Reactors" for the controller, and "Reactor Control Rods" quest for control and fuel rods. The pack changed the recipes for the Reactor Controller (Basic), the Reactor Fuel Rod (Basic) and the Reactor Active Forge Energy Power Tap (Basic), so don't rely on the mod's defaults for those.[6][11]

"Our First Reactor" quest asks you to build the smallest passive reactor, a 3x3x3. The in-game guide lists 22 Basic casings plus one each of the controller, control rod, fuel rod, solid access port and active power tap, and the glass is optional. The quest suggests one solid access port on each side, one for fuel and one for waste.[3][6]

Tier 2: Waste, Cyanite and the Reprocessor

In "Dealing with Waste" quest the quest asks you to set a solid access port to output and collect Cyanite Ingot from the reactor. The quests that follow lean on Cyanite. The pack also has a Mystical Agriculture recipe for Cyanite Ingot, and it is marked as changed by the pack.[6][11]

"Reprocessing our Waste" quest starts the Reprocessor, and the quest warns that it takes a lot of Cyanite. The quests describe it as a 3x3x7 multiblock, built in three steps: "Building The Frame" quest for the frame, "Importing Waste" quest for the collector and waste injector, and a quest in "Extreme Reactors" for the power port, fluid injector and output port. For Cyanite, the quest says the fluid injector takes water.[6]

Once the Reprocessor is built, "Blutonium" quest asks you to feed in power, water and Cyanite to make Blutonium Ingot. The quest says Blutonium can be used as reactor fuel and creates its own waste, Magentite.[6][11]

Blutonium IngotMod recipe

Reprocessor (bigreactors)

Recipe id: bigreactors:reprocessor/cyanite_to_blutonium

Tier 2b: Turbines and the Reinforced reactor

"Making Turbines" quest also builds on Cyanite. Turbines are multiblocks that turn vapor like Steam into power. Basic turbine parts top out at 5x5x10, and a Basic turbine can use up to 1,000 mB/t of vapor. For anything bigger the quest says you need Reinforced Turbine parts.[6][30]

The turbine quests are "Turbine Construction" quest, "Turbine Ports" quest and "Creating The Turbine Shaft" quest. The pack changed the recipes for the Turbine Active Forge Energy Power Tap (Basic) and the Turbine Rotor Bearing (Basic).[6][11]

To feed a turbine, "Building An Actively Cooled Reactor" quest asks for an actively cooled reactor built from Reinforced reactor parts with a Forge fluid port. According to "Expanding Our Reactors" quest, Reinforced reactors can reach 32x32x48, and that quest also covers the size tradeoffs. The pack changed Reactor Casing (Reinforced), and also the upgrade recipe that turns a Basic casing into a Reinforced one.[6][11]

Tier 3: Fluidizer and the exotic ingots

The Fluidizer starts at "The Fluidizer" quest. The quests describe a multiblock with a minimum size of 3x3x3, built through "Fluidizer Construction" quest and "Required Ports" quest. "Operational Modes" quest covers its three modes, which depend on the injectors you install: solid to fluid, two solids combined, or two fluids combined.[6][56]

In "Ludicrite & Ridiculite" quest the quest says the Reprocessor can combine what you have made so far into new ingots, and that you might need a Fluidizer for this step. Blutonium and Cyanite make Ludicrite Ingot. Ludicrite and Magentite then make Ridiculite Ingot. The quest on operational modes suggests fluidizing Magentite first, then sending it to the Reprocessor with Ludicrite.[6][11]

"Rossinite" quest says that combining Blutonium with Yellorium in the Fluidizer makes Verderium, and that burning Verderium as reactor fuel produces Rossinite as a reactant. To use it as fuel the quest asks for the Reactor Fuel Injection Port (Reinforced), whose recipe the pack changed. The quest also notes that you might need to empty out the fuel currently in your reactor, or build a new reactor for this.[6][11]

Endgame: Inanite, Insanite and the ATM Star

Tip: Reactor, turbine, Fluidizer and Reprocessor glass all count for the building-tips glass quest, so you can use it to see inside your machines or just to make your base look better.[66]

How does Extreme Reactors work with other mods?

4 parts

Extreme Reactors connects to a few other mods in this pack through its recipes: Mystical Agriculture, Productive Bees and one big crafting recipe. Here's what the pack's recipes actually link up.[11]

Added by the pack. Other mods' items in it include Blaze Burner, Rainbow Coal and Solid Biofuel.

Energy and pipes

For power, the reactor quest chapter says you can attach pipes and cables to the Power Tap on a passive reactor to carry the energy away. The Fluidizer's Power Port accepts any Forge Energy-compatible cable or generator.[6][58]

Which All the Mons quests use Extreme Reactors?

6 parts

Extreme Reactors has its own quest chapter in the pack. Going by the quests, it starts with a basic reactor and ends at the Insanite Block, which the quest text says is also used to create the ATM Star. Here's the order the quests unlock in. The chapter's first quest I can see here comes after an intro quest called Welcome to Extreme Reactors![6]

Your first reactor

  1. "Graphite for Casings" quest asks for Graphite Bar. The quest says you smelt Coal or Charcoal to get it, and that Graphite is one of the main materials for a reactor.[6]
  2. "Reactor Building Components" quest asks for Reactor Casing (Basic) and Reactor Glass (Basic). The quest explains that "Basic" parts can only be used with other basic parts, and that they have a size limit.[6]
  3. Three quests open up next. "Interacting with the Reactor" quest asks for Reactor Active Forge Energy Power Tap (Basic) and Reactor Solid Access Port (Basic). a quest in "Extreme Reactors" asks for Reactor Controller (Basic). "Reactor Control Rods" quest asks for Reactor Control Rod (Basic) and Reactor Fuel Rod (Basic).[6]
  4. "Our First Reactor" quest comes after the controller quest. The quest text walks you through the smallest passive reactor, a 3x3x3, and says its requirements are the exact amounts you need to build one.[6]

After that, "Expanding Our Reactors" quest covers custom sizes. Its text says Basic parts top out at 5x5x5 and Reinforced parts can reach 32x32x48. "Dealing with Waste" quest asks for Cyanite Ingot, which the quest describes as the waste your reactor makes.[6]

Turbines and actively cooled reactors

The Fluidizer

"The Fluidizer" quest follows Our First Reactor and asks for Fluidizer Controller. Three quests then follow it. "Fluidizer Construction" quest asks for Fluidizer Casing and Fluidizer Glass. "Required Ports" quest asks for Fluidizer Output Port and Fluidizer Power Port. "Operational Modes" quest asks for Fluidizer Solid Injector and Fluidizer Fluid Injector.[6]

The Reprocessor chain

  1. "Reprocessing our Waste" quest comes after Dealing with Waste and asks for Reprocessor Casing. The quest says the Reprocessor takes a lot of Cyanite.[6]
  2. a quest in "Extreme Reactors" asks for Reprocessor Controller. The quest describes the Reprocessor as a 3x3x7 multiblock.[6]
  3. Three quests follow that one. "Importing Waste" quest asks for Reprocessor Collector and Reprocessor Waste Injector. a quest in "Extreme Reactors" asks for Reprocessor Power Port, Reprocessor Fluid Injector and Reprocessor Output Port. "Building The Frame" quest asks for another Reprocessor Casing.[6]
  4. "Blutonium" quest follows Building The Frame and asks for Blutonium Ingot.[6]
  5. "Ludicrite & Ridiculite" quest asks for Ludicrite Ingot and Ridiculite Ingot. The quest notes you might need a Fluidizer to complete this step.[6]

Rossinite to the Insanite Block

  1. "Rossinite" quest comes after the three Fluidizer quests (Operational Modes, Required Ports and Fluidizer Construction) and asks for Reactor Fuel Injection Port (Reinforced). The quest says Verderium as a fuel needs Fuel Injection Ports and produces Rossinite as a reactant, and that you might need to empty out the fuel currently in your reactor, or make a new reactor for this.[6]
  2. "Insanite" quest follows Rossinite and asks for Insanite Ingot. The quest says Benitoite Ore can be found in the Nether.[6]
  3. "Inanite" quest comes after both Rossinite and Ludicrite & Ridiculite. It asks for Inanite Ingot.[6]
  4. "Insanite Block" quest asks for Insanite Block. The quest calls it one of the hardest materials in the mod and says it is also used to create the ATM Star.[6]

The ATM Star chapter has "Insanite Blocks" quest, which comes after the Extreme Reactors chapter and asks for Insanite Block again. Its text explains the Insanite and Inanite chain, including mining Benitoite in the Nether, and warns you not to mix up the two names.[10]

The Building Tips chapter has one untitled quest, a quest in "Building Tips", that accepts any of several glass blocks. Those include Reactor Glass (Basic), Reactor Glass (Reinforced), Turbine Glass (Basic), Turbine Glass (Reinforced), Fluidizer Glass and Reprocessor Glass. The quest text says glass can also be used to make your base look better.[66]
