What is Mekanism Lasers?
3 parts
Mekanism Lasers is an add-on that builds laser features on top of Mekanism. It needs Mekanism to run. You get laser doors, security systems, and the ability to upgrade lasers through tiers from basic to ultimate.[1]
It isn't only a base-security mod. You can also use it to build an infinite ore generator, which is the part most of you will care about in a modpack.[1]
Who it's for
If you like Mekanism automation and want either a renewable ore supply or some laser-based protection for your base, this is the add-on to look at. The author recommends installing Jade and JEI alongside it for the best experience.[1]
Version in this pack
The pack ships Mekanism Lasers 1.1.10.2. The project page lists 1.1.10.3-c as its latest 1.21.1 version, so the pack's build is slightly behind that. The author also says the mod is still under development and that a lot of things are yet to be added, so expect it to keep growing.[1][2]
Where it fits in progression
The resource generation chapter has a quest, a quest in "?", that asks for the Ore Generator together with one laser. Any of the Basic Laser, Advanced Laser, Elite Laser or Ultimate Laser counts.[3]
The mod also shows up in the creative chapter. a quest in "?" asks for the Ultimate Toggleable Laser alongside several other items. a quest in "?" lists the Creative Toggleable Laser among its tasks, and it comes after the ultimate toggleable laser quest.[4]
How do you get started with Mekanism Lasers?
5 parts
Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 guide
Mekanism Lasers needs Mekanism to run, and it adds stronger laser tiers, laser-handling blocks and an ore generator. Here is the order I'd go in, so each thing you make feeds into the next.[1][5]
First, make a Basic Laser
Everything starts with the Basic Laser. It is the first laser tier (Basic, Advanced, Elite and Ultimate), and each later laser is crafted from the one below it.[6]

Next, add an Energy Transformer
The Energy Transformer converts laser light into energy. The pack's ore generator recipe needs one, so it is worth making early.[5][6]

Then, upgrade up to an Elite Laser
Upgrade your laser step by step: the Advanced Laser comes first, then the Elite Laser. You need to reach the Elite tier because the pack's ore generator recipe builds on it.[6]

Finally, build the Ore Generator
The Ore Generator uses light to convert energy into ores. In this pack its recipe is added by the pack itself, which is why the Energy Transformer and the Elite Laser come first. Quest a quest in "?" in the resource generation chapter asks you for the generator plus a laser.[5][6][7]

Optional extras once you're set up
- Laser Stopper is a block that can take the shape of any block and still block lasers.[5][6]
- Toggleable lasers, such as the Basic Toggleable Laser, are lasers that can be switched on and off.[5][6]
- The Interface Block is used to interface with toggleable lasers by placing a Remote Control.[5][6]

How does Mekanism Lasers work?
4 parts
Mekanism Lasers builds on the lasers from Mekanism, so it can't run without Mekanism. It adds upgradeable laser tiers, lasers you can switch on and off, ways to block lasers, and an ore generator that runs on laser energy. The mod is still under development, so the sources only explain part of what it does.[1]
Laser tiers
The laser tiers run from Basic Laser through Advanced Laser and Elite Laser up to Ultimate Laser. You upgrade from basic to ultimate, and each tier's recipe is built on the laser of the tier below it. The Basic Laser starts from Mekanism's own Laser. The mod also has Creative Laser blocks, but there is no survival recipe for them in the sources.[1][8][9]

Toggleable lasers, Interface Block and Remote Control
Every tier has a toggleable version: Basic Toggleable Laser, Advanced Toggleable Laser, Elite Toggleable Laser and Ultimate Toggleable Laser. These work like the normal lasers, but you can switch them on and off. That is what makes laser doors and security systems possible.[1][8][9]
The Interface Block is how you talk to toggleable lasers. Its in-game description reads: "Interface with toggleable lasers by placing remote control". The Remote Control is the item that description refers to. The sources don't explain the exact steps in the Interface Block's screen, so check it in-game.[9]
The pack changed the recipes for the Advanced, Elite and Ultimate Toggleable Lasers. Each of them has a recipe marked as changed by the pack, and it is shown below for the Advanced one. The Basic Toggleable Laser has only the mod's own recipe.[8]

Unverified What the Laser Splitter does when a laser hits it (how many beams it makes, and in which directions) is not described in the available sources.
From laser to energy to ore
The Energy Transformer converts laser to energy, according to its in-game description. The Ore Generator uses light to convert energy into ores. Its screen shows the energy used per ore generated. The mod's page calls this an infinite ore generator.[1][9]
The pack added its own recipe for the Ore Generator, so you need to craft an Elite Laser and an Energy Transformer along the way.[8]

The ore generator is tuned in config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml. In this pack the numeric values are the same as the mod defaults:[10]
- [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.oreGeneratorCooldown]] is 4 seconds between cycles.[10]
- [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.oreGeneratorFabricationCost]] is 16,000,000 energy to fabricate ore.[10]
- [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.oreGeneratorNumberOfOres]] is 1, so you get one ore from each cycle.[10]
- [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.blacklistedOres]] lists ores the generator will not produce. This pack blacklists several raw ores from Just Dire Things: ferricore, blazegold, celestigem, eclipsealloy and the raw coal ores of every tier.[10]
Unverified The mod also has an Energy Storage Casing, Energy Storage Cell and Energy Storage Port, but the available sources don't explain how they work or whether they form a multiblock. Item, fluid and automation handling for the Ore Generator is likewise not documented in the sources.
How do you progress through Mekanism Lasers?
5 parts
Mekanism Lasers progression in this pack is a straight four-step ladder: Basic, Advanced, Elite and Ultimate. Each laser is crafted from the one below it, so you can't skip a tier. Every tier also has a toggleable version.[8]
The four laser tiers
The Basic Laser is the entry point. It is built from a regular Mekanism laser, so you need that first.[8]

Toggleable lasers
The toggleable lasers are Basic Toggleable Laser, Advanced Toggleable Laser, Elite Toggleable Laser and Ultimate Toggleable Laser. You can make each one from the matching non-toggleable laser of the same tier.[8]
The pack also changed the second recipe for the Advanced, Elite and Ultimate toggleable lasers. In this pack you can upgrade the toggleable laser of the tier below. Advanced uses the Basic Toggleable Laser, Elite uses the Advanced Toggleable Laser, and Ultimate uses the Elite Toggleable Laser. Each upgrade also needs that tier's Mekanism control circuit and alloy, plus one more metal or gem. Here are the pack's versions:[8]

Ore Generator quest
In the resource generation chapter, quest a quest in "?" asks you to get the Ore Generator and any one laser, from Basic up to Ultimate. The quest itself accepts any tier.[3]
The pack added its own Ore Generator recipe, though, and it needs an Elite Laser plus an Energy Transformer. So you will reach at least Elite tier before you can craft the generator.[8]

Endgame: the creative chapter
Quest a quest in "?" in the creative chapter wants the Ultimate Toggleable Laser. It also asks for several other late-game items from different mods, so the Ultimate tier is an endgame goal here.[4]
After that, quest a quest in "?" is a big collection quest. It asks for the Creative Toggleable Laser alongside creative items from many other mods, and it comes after several earlier quests, including the Ultimate Toggleable Laser one.[4]
Support blocks
The mod's utility blocks all have ordinary mod recipes in the pack: Interface Block, Laser Splitter, Laser Stopper, Remote Control and the Energy Transformer. The Laser Splitter and Laser Stopper are built from Mekanism parts, not from the laser tiers.[8]
How does Mekanism Lasers work with other mods?
4 parts
Mekanism Lasers is an add-on, so its main connection is Mekanism itself. The mod cannot run without Mekanism, and this pack's recipes for the laser blocks reuse Mekanism parts such as the Laser, Steel Casing and Laser Amplifier.[1][8]
Mekanism-based crafting
Several blocks are crafted straight from Mekanism items, and the pack leaves these recipes as the mod defines them. Here are the Basic Laser and the Laser Splitter:[8]

Pack-changed toggleable laser upgrades
The upgrade recipes for the higher toggleable lasers are marked as changed by the pack. Each tier is crafted from the previous toggleable laser plus Mekanism control circuits and alloys, so you will be pulling from Mekanism's progression as you climb. Check the recipes below rather than assuming mod defaults.[8]

Industrial Foregoing
This mod's Energy Transformer is used in the pack's recipe for the Fluid Laser Base from Industrial Foregoing. That recipe is changed by the pack, and it also needs an Energy Processor and a Fortron-Infused Ingot, so it ties together several mods.[8]

Quest connections
The resource generation quest a quest in "?" asks for the Ore Generator together with any one of the four laser tiers: Basic Laser, Advanced Laser, Elite Laser or Ultimate Laser.[3]
In the creative chapter, quest a quest in "?" has the Ultimate Toggleable Laser as a task next to items from other mods: a Mekanism Ultimate Energy Cube, a Cataclysm Ignitium Ingot, an Immersive Engineering Steel Component and an FTB Materials Refined Obsidian Ingot.[4]
That quest comes before quest a quest in "?". It lists the Creative Toggleable Laser alongside creative-style items from other mods, including the Create Creative Motor, the Ars Nouveau Creative Source Jar and the MFFS Infinite Power Card.[4]
Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Mekanism Lasers?
2 parts
Mekanism Lasers shows up in two quest chapters in this pack: "resource_generation" and "creative". Neither quest has a title in the quest file, so they are only identified by their ids below.[3][4]
Resource generation chapter
Quest a quest in "?" is the one to look for first. It has two tasks. You need to have an Ore Generator, and you also need a laser. For the laser task, any one of these counts: Basic Laser, Advanced Laser, Elite Laser or Ultimate Laser. So you can start with the cheapest laser tier and still complete it.[3]
The quest file lists no prerequisite quest for it, so nothing in the sources shows it being locked behind another quest.[3]
Creative chapter
The "creative" chapter has two quests that involve this mod, and they come one after the other.[4]
- Quest a quest in "?" asks for five items: the Ultimate Toggleable Laser, an Ultimate Energy Cube from Mekanism, an Ignitium Ingot from Cataclysm, an Immersive Engineering Steel Component and a Refined Obsidian Ingot from FTB Materials. It unlocks after another quest in the chapter, 25CCA572C4D5CEA0, whose contents are not in the sources I was given.[4]
- Quest a quest in "?" is a big collection quest with nine tasks, and one of them is the Creative Toggleable Laser. The other tasks are creative-tier items from other mods. This quest only opens after nine other quests are done, including the Ultimate Toggleable Laser quest above.[4]
Unverified How you actually obtain the Creative Toggleable Laser, and what the other prerequisite quests of the creative chapter ask for, is not confirmed by the sources used for this section.
Which Mekanism Lasers config options matter?
2 parts
Mekanism Lasers has a small common config, and the part most players will care about is the infinite ore generator. Everything lives in the file config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml. Three of the four options are exactly the mod's defaults in this pack, and the fourth is an ore blacklist.[1][10]
Ore generator settings
- [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.oreGeneratorCooldown]] is the cooldown of the ore generator, in seconds. The pack sets it to 4, which is the mod default.[10]
- [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.oreGeneratorFabricationCost]] is the energy cost of fabricating ore. The pack sets it to 16,000,000, which is the mod default. The allowed range is 0 to 2,147,483,647.[10]
- [[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.oreGeneratorNumberOfOres]] is how many ores you get from one cycle. The pack sets it to 1, which is the mod default.[10]
Ore blacklist
[[config:config/mekanism_lasers-common.toml#Mekanism Lasers Config.blacklistedOres]] is a list of ores that are blacklisted from generation. In this pack every entry is a raw ore from the justdirethings namespace.[10]
- Raw Ferricore Ore[10]
- Raw Blazegold Ore[10]
- Raw Celestigem Ore[10]
- Raw Eclipse Alloy Ore[10]
- Raw Primal Coal, Raw Blaze Ember, Raw Voidflame Coal and Raw Eclipse Ember[10]
In practice, those raw ores are blocked from the laser ore generator's output in this pack, so you will need to get them another way.[10]
What changed in Mekanism Lasers between versions?
1 part
There isn't much history to cover here. FTB StoneBlock 4 1.2.1 ships Mekanism Lasers 1.1.10.2, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0.0 or earlier.[2]
Mod changelog
- 1.1.10.2 (the version in this pack): added the Energy Transformator, which converts lasers to usable energy.[2][11]
Unverified No pack changelog entries for this mod were available, so any changes to it between StoneBlock 4 releases, such as tweaked values or recipes, are unverified.
