What is Functional Storage?
1 part
Functional Storage is the drawer mod in this pack. The pack ships version 1.21.1-1.5.8, and the mod has been included since 1.1.0 or earlier.[1]
Drawers hold lots of items in a small space. The quest book says a standard Drawer that holds one type of item can hold around 2,000 items at its base amount, and upgrades raise that. Here is what the quest book covers for the mod:[2]
- Looks: Framed Drawer (1x1) and the other framed drawers let you change a drawer's textures by crafting it together with other items. See "Framed Drawers" quest.[2]
- Fluids: Fluid Drawer (1x1), Fluid Drawer (1x2) and Fluid Drawer (2x2) store fluids. You can set one by pumping fluid in or by using a bucket on it. See "Fluid Drawers" quest.[2]
- Compacting: Compacting Drawer stores an item and converts it into its compressed versions. Simple Compacting Drawer handles items that only use a base and block recipe. See "Compacting Drawers" quest.[2]
- Upgrades: size upgrades such as Copper Upgrade and Netherite Upgrade, utility upgrades such as Puller Upgrade, and Void Upgrade for dumping overflow. See "Storage Size Upgrades" quest, "Utility Upgrades" quest and "Void Upgrade" quest.[2]
- Networks: the Linking Tool connects drawers to a Storage Controller, and Ender Drawer links drawers across dimensions. See "Storage Controllers" quest and "Ender Drawers" quest.[2]
Where it sits in the quest book
Functional Storage quests live in the "General Storage" chapter. It is chapter 7 of 31 in the book, in the "Resources & Logistics" group, and it has 146 quests. The chapter opens with "General Storage Options" quest, which says it covers most of the basic ways to store your items.[2]
The chapter also covers other storage options: Sophisticated Backpacks, Sophisticated Storage, Pocket Storage, Ender Storage and an Applied Energistics start. Most of the Functional Storage quests shown here, including the framed, fluid, compacting, generator and upgrade quests, come after a quest called "Functional Drawers". "Storage Controllers" quest and "Ender Drawers" quest come after "Linking Drawers" quest. The Applied Energistics "Storage Bus" quest quest comes after ME Interface and mentions the Storage Controller from this mod.[2]
The text of 124 of the chapter's 146 quests is not shown in the material for this guide, so check the quest book in game for the rest.[2]
How do you get started with Functional Storage?
5 parts
Functional Storage is all about putting tons of one item into a single block. In this pack its quests live in the General Storage chapter, which is chapter 7 of 31 in the book, in the Resources & Logistics group. The entry point is "Functional Drawers" quest, and the other drawer quests unlock after it. Here's the order I'd tackle things in.[2]
Step one: make a basic drawer
Start with a plain drawer such as Oak Drawer (1x1). Drawers come as single, 1x2 and 2x2 versions. A 2x2 drawer holds 4 separate items, but the base storage amount is divided by 4. Do this first, because many of the tools and upgrades below use a drawer as one of their ingredients.[2][3]

To fill a drawer, right-click it with the item, and double right-click to deposit several stacks at once. Left-click takes out 1 item, and Sneak + Left-click pulls a full stack.[2]
Step two: get the Configuration Tool
The Configuration Tool locks a drawer so it only deals with certain items, which matters once you start automating. It also has modes, like hiding the item count or turning off item rendering on a drawer to save FPS. Sneak-use it in the air to change modes. The pack changed this recipe, so check the one below rather than the mod's default. The quest is "Configuring Drawers" quest.[2][3]

Step three: add storage size upgrades
A standard single-item drawer holds around 2,000 items at its base amount. Upgrades such as the Copper Upgrade multiply that, and the upgrades stack. Most drawers take 4 of these size upgrades, of any tier. The higher tiers are Gold Upgrade, Diamond Upgrade and Netherite Upgrade. The pack changed the Gold and Diamond recipes, so check those in-game.[2][3]

Step four: build a drawer wall with a controller
Once you have several drawers, the Storage Controller connects and controls them all at once. Double right-click it to dump your whole inventory into the linked drawers. You can also pipe items into it.[2]

To link drawers you need the Linking Tool, which the pack has also given its own recipe. Sneak-use the tool on the controller first, then use it on each drawer you want to add. The matching quests are "Linking Drawers" quest and "Storage Controllers" quest.[2][3]

Where to go next
- Void Upgrade automatically voids items above the current stack limit. It's handy for farms and quarries, but anything over the limit is destroyed. See "Void Upgrade" quest.[2]
- Compacting drawers such as Compacting Drawer store items together with their compressed versions. See "Compacting Drawers" quest.[2]
- Collector Upgrade picks items up off the ground, while Puller Upgrade and Pusher Upgrade pull from and push to adjacent inventories.[2]
- Framed Drawer (1x1) and the other framed drawers let you change how a drawer looks. See "Framed Drawers" quest.[2]
How does Functional Storage work?
5 parts
Functional Storage is all about drawers. Every wood type has its own set, and each comes in three layouts: 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2, such as Oak Drawer (1x1), Oak Drawer (1x2) and Acacia Drawer (2x2). There are also Framed, Fluid and Compacting drawers, plus an Ender Drawer and an Armory Cabinet.[4]
To open a drawer's GUI, right click it while crouching.[4]
Crafting the basic drawers
Wooden drawers are built around a wooden chest, and the bigger layouts give you several drawers per craft. The Oak 1x2 recipe makes 2 drawers, and the Acacia 2x2 recipe makes 4. Both of these are the mod's own recipes, not pack changes.[3]

Fluid and compacting drawers
Fluid Drawers also come in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2. The GUI shows hints for emptying a container into the drawer and for filling a container from the drawer.[4]
The Compacting Drawer has its own recipe, and the pack has changed it. The Framed Compacting Drawer has two recipes, and the pack changed both: one from scratch, and one that upgrades a Compacting Drawer.[3]

Framed Drawers (1x1 and 1x2) can be made from an existing drawer of the matching size, and the pack changed those recipes too.[3]
Controllers
The mod has a Storage Controller and a Framed Storage Controller. The Linking Tool connects drawers to a controller: its single mode links one drawer to a controller, and its multiple mode links several drawers between 2 points. The Controller Access Point is the mod's own recipe, while the pack changed the recipe for the Framed Controller Access Point.[3][4]

Upgrades
- Storage upgrades: Copper, Gold, Diamond Upgrade and Netherite Upgrade change a drawer's base capacity, and there is also a Max Storage Upgrade. The game describes these as increasing or setting the base value, but the exact amounts are not in the sources.[4]
- The Iron Downgrade does the opposite: it limits slots to a max of 64 items.[4]
- Item handling: the Pusher Upgrade, Puller Upgrade and Collector Upgrade. Upgrades with a Direction or Slot setting are changed by right clicking in a GUI.[4]
- Other utility upgrades: the Void Upgrade and the Redstone Upgrade.[4]
A Puller Upgrade can be crafted straight from a Pusher Upgrade, and the Netherite Upgrade is a smithing recipe that starts from the Diamond Upgrade.[3]
The pack changed the recipe for the Collector Upgrade. The Void Upgrade uses the mod's own recipe.[3]

Fluid generator upgrades
The mod has a Water Generator Upgrade, a Dripping Upgrade and an Obsidian Generator Upgrade. Generator upgrades show a tooltip in the form of how many mb of which fluid they generate. The Obsidian Generator Upgrade is crafted from the other two upgrades with the mod's own recipe.[3][4]

Unverified The sources don't confirm exact drawer capacities, upgrade speeds, generator output amounts or what the Configuration Tool does, so treat any numbers you see elsewhere as unverified for this pack.
How do you progress through Functional Storage?
5 parts
Functional Storage sits in the General Storage chapter of the quest book, in the Resources & Logistics group (chapter 7 of 31). The chapter opens with "General Storage Options" quest, and the Functional Storage line starts at "Functional Drawers" quest. Most of the drawer quests I can see branch straight off that one. Some of the chapter's quest text isn't covered here, so check the quest book for the rest.[2]
Step 1: Basic drawers
Drawers come in three varieties: single, 1x2 and 2x2. A 2x2 drawer stores 4 separate items, but its base storage is divided by 4. Right-click with an item to insert it. Double right-click deposits multiple stacks. Left-click pulls 1 item and Sneak + Left-click pulls a full stack.[2]
Each wood type has its own drawer set. Oak is the example here, and the others follow the same pattern with the matching planks.[3]

Step 2: Storage size tiers
The "Storage Size Upgrades" quest quest covers the Copper Upgrade, Gold Upgrade, Diamond Upgrade and Netherite Upgrade. Each upgrade multiplies the total storage amount, so they stack. The quest says a standard single-item drawer holds around 2,000 items at base, and most drawers take 4 of these upgrades of any tier.[2]
The pack changed the Gold and Diamond Upgrade recipes. Copper and Netherite use the mod's own recipes.[3]

Step 3: Tools and setup
The Configuration Tool comes from "Configuring Drawers" quest. It locks drawers to specific items, which helps a lot with automation. Used on a Storage Controller, it locks every linked drawer at once. It also has modes, like hiding the count or turning off item rendering to save FPS.[2]
The Linking Tool from "Linking Drawers" quest links drawers to a controller. The pack changed both tool recipes.[2][3]

Step 4: Controllers and Ender Drawers
Two quests unlock after Linking Drawers. "Storage Controllers" quest covers the Storage Controller and the Controller Access Point. Once your drawers are linked, double right-click the controller to dump your inventory into the network. "Ender Drawers" quest covers the Ender Drawer, which needs 2 drawers linked together with the Linking Tool.[2]

Branches off the first quest
- "Compacting Drawers" quest: the Simple Compacting Drawer handles items with only a base and block form, like redstone, diamonds and emeralds. The Compacting Drawer stores and converts compressed versions, like iron nuggets, ingots and blocks. The pack changed both recipes.[2][3]
- "Framed Drawers" quest: framed drawers let you change the drawer's look. In the crafting grid, slot 1 is the outside texture, slot 2 the inside texture, slot 3 the Framed Drawer and slot 4 the divider texture. The pack changed the framed drawer recipes.[2][3]
- "Fluid Drawers" quest: Fluid Drawer (1x1) and its larger versions store fluids. Pump fluid in or use a bucket on the drawer to set it.[2]
- "Utility Upgrades" quest: the Collector Upgrade picks up items from the ground, the Puller Upgrade pulls from adjacent inventories and the Pusher Upgrade pushes into them. The pack changed all three recipes.[2][3]
- "Void Upgrade" quest: the Void Upgrade voids items above the stack limit, handy for quarry cobblestone.[2]
- "Drawer Generators" quest: the Dripping Upgrade, Water Generator Upgrade and Obsidian Generator Upgrade generate water, lava and obsidian. The pack changed the Dripping Upgrade recipe.[2][3]

How does Functional Storage work with other mods?
3 parts
The sources show two clear links between Functional Storage and other mods in this pack: a changed recipe that needs items from other mods, and a quest that compares Sophisticated Storage barrels to drawers.[2][3]
Dripping Upgrade: a pack-changed recipe
The Dripping Upgrade is the standout. The pack changed its crafting recipe, and the new version uses items from other mods, including Grains of Infinity from the enderio namespace and Lava Lamp from the mcwlights namespace. So you can't make it from Functional Storage parts alone. Here is the exact in-pack recipe:[3]

| any deepslate ore bearing ground | any deepslate ore bearing ground | |
| any deepslate ore bearing ground | any deepslate ore bearing ground |
Recipe id: functionalstorage:dripping_upgrade
This is the pack's changed recipe, not the mod default.
The quest book groups this upgrade with the Water Generator Upgrade and the Obsidian Generator Upgrade in the quest "Drawer Generators" quest. The quest calls them Drawer Generators and says they are extremely helpful for generating water, lava and obsidian.[2]
Limited Barrels from Sophisticated Storage
The quest "Limited Barrels" quest sits after the Sophisticated Storage quests in the General Storage chapter. It says Limited Barrels function like Drawers from Functional Storage. A Limited Barrel holds up to 4 types of items, with several stacks of each. The tier you craft decides how many item types it holds, from a single type up to 4.[2]
Where to read more
The Functional Storage quests live in the General Storage chapter, in the Resources & Logistics group of the quest book. Only some of that chapter's quests were visible to me, so if another mod link shows up in the remaining ones, you'll find it in the quest book.[2]
Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Functional Storage?
3 parts
All the Functional Storage quests live in the "General Storage" chapter. It is chapter 7 of 31 in the "Resources & Logistics" group of the quest book, and it has 146 quests. The chapter also covers other storage options like backpacks, Sophisticated Storage, Applied Energistics and Refined Storage 2, so the drawer quests sit in their own branch. Thirteen of the chapter's quests aren't covered in this guide for lack of room, so check the quest book for those.[2]
The starting quest
Everything begins with "Functional Drawers" quest. It explains that drawers come in three varieties: single, 1x2 and 2x2. A 2x2 drawer holds 4 separate items, but the base storage is divided by 4. You right-click to insert, double right-click to deposit several stacks, left-click to take 1 item and sneak + left-click to take a full stack.[2]
Quests that unlock after it
Most of the other drawer quests unlock straight after the starting quest, so you can tackle them in whatever order suits your base.[2]
- "Framed Drawers" quest asks for any framed drawer, such as Framed Drawer (1x1) or Framed Drawer (2x2). The quest text says the four crafting slots set the outside texture, inside texture, framed drawer and divider texture.[2]
- "Configuring Drawers" quest asks for the Configuration Tool, which locks drawers to certain items. Used on a controller, it locks every linked drawer at once.[2]
- "Linking Drawers" quest asks for the Linking Tool, which you need for a drawer wall.[2]
- "Drawer Generators" quest asks for one of the Dripping Upgrade, Water Generator Upgrade or Obsidian Generator Upgrade. The quest says they help generate water, lava and obsidian.[2]
- "Fluid Drawers" quest asks for a fluid drawer (Fluid Drawer (1x1), Fluid Drawer (1x2) or Fluid Drawer (2x2)). You set the fluid by pumping it in or using a bucket on the drawer.[2]
- "Utility Upgrades" quest asks for the Collector Upgrade, Puller Upgrade or Pusher Upgrade.[2]
- "Storage Size Upgrades" quest asks for a size upgrade: Copper Upgrade, Gold Upgrade, Diamond Upgrade or Netherite Upgrade. The quest says a standard one-item drawer holds around 2,000 items at base, upgrades stack, and most drawers take 4 of them.[2]
- "Compacting Drawers" quest asks for the Simple Compacting Drawer or Compacting Drawer. The simple version only handles items that have a base and block recipe.[2]
- "Void Upgrade" quest asks for the Void Upgrade, which voids items above the stack limit. The quest suggests it for farms and quarries.[2]
After Linking Drawers
Two quests unlock after "Linking Drawers" quest. "Storage Controllers" quest asks for a Storage Controller (or the Framed Storage Controller) plus a Controller Access Point (or the Framed Controller Access Point). Once drawers are linked, you can double right-click the controller to deposit your whole inventory.[2]
"Ender Drawers" quest asks for the Ender Drawer. You link two of them with the Linking Tool so the items can be reached across dimensions.[2]
