What is Create Nuclear?

2 parts

Create Nuclear is a Create addon that adds nuclear reactors, along with the dangers of radiation. It also brings Uranium and Thorium ores and a refining process for feeding and powering a reactor automatically. This pack ships version 1.3.2-beta.3 of the mod.[1][2]

What the reactor does in this pack

The pack's quest book treats the reactor as a big Stress Unit (SU) source. It describes a 5x5x7 multiblock that can reliably generate almost 2 million SU with the correct setup. You pull the SU straight out of the output block at the bottom.[3]

The quest asks you for the Reactor Controller, Reactor Input, Reactor Output, Reactor Casing, Reactor Frame, Reactor Cooler and Reactor Core, plus Graphite Rod and Uranium Rod. The Controller block has a ponder showing how to build the multiblock.[3]

The reward is a ready-to-go stable blueprint that produces 1.8 million SU. You insert it into the Controller, then feed the Input Port with Uranium Rods and Graphite Rods. You're free to experiment with your own layout.[3]

The a quest in "Power Generation" quest adds that if you convert SU to Forge Energy with Generator Coils, each Nuclear Reactor provides enough SU for around 300,000 FE/t.[3]

Where it sits in the quest book

The reactor is covered in the "Power Generation" chapter, which is chapter 10 of 31 in the group "Resources & Logistics". The quest is a quest in "Power Generation", and it comes after the Mechanical Crafter quest. Its text points to a following quest that shows how to configure the reactor for lots of SU. That chapter has 41 quests, and four of them aren't covered in this guide, so check the quest book for those.[3]

How do you get started with Create Nuclear?

5 parts

Create Nuclear adds nuclear reactors to Create, and this pack's quest book gives you a clear path into it. The reactor quest a quest in "Power Generation" sits in the "Power Generation" chapter (group "Resources & Logistics", chapter 10 of 31) and comes right after the Mechanical Crafter quest. It asks for the Reactor Controller, Reactor Input, Reactor Output, Reactor Casing, Reactor Frame, Reactor Cooler, Reactor Core, Graphite Rod and Uranium Rod.[1][3]

The quest says this is a 5x5x7 multiblock that can reliably make almost 2 Million Stress Units with the right setup, and you take the SU straight from the output block at the bottom. The order below follows what the reactor needs.[3]

Step 1: Graphite rods

Start with Graphene, which you get by pressing coal dust. A mechanical crafter then turns graphene into a Graphite Rod. The pack changed both the pressing and the graphite rod recipes, so use these blocks rather than the mod's defaults.[4][5]

The pack changed this recipe too.

The pack also adds other ways to make graphene (a Modern Industrialization compressor and a Mekanism compressing recipe) and a Modern Industrialization assembler recipe for the rod, if you would rather use those machines.[4]

Step 2: Uranium rods

Uranium dust is mixed into Liquid Uranium, and the pack changed that recipe: it gives 25 Liquid Uranium per dust. The pack also lets you melt a Uranium Clump into 180 Liquid Uranium, or a Uranium GeOre Shard into 90, in a fusing machine (the clump can also be melted in a Productive Metalworks melter). Compacting 100 Liquid Uranium makes Yellowcake.[4]

Step 4: Blueprint and startup

The controller needs a Reactor Blueprint with a rod pattern to work. The pack changed this recipe too, but the quest reward already gives you a stable blueprint that produces 1.8 Million SU. Put the blueprint into the controller, then feed the input port with uranium rods and graphite rods. The quest shows the same layout on its next page if you want to build another reactor.[3][4][5]

Watch out: Rods wear out: in this pack [[config:config/createnuclear-common.toml#Rods.Uranium rod lifespan]] and [[config:config/createnuclear-common.toml#Rods.Graphite rod lifespan]] are both 3600, the mod default. [[config:config/createnuclear-common.toml#Rods.Maximum reactor heat]] is 1000. Explosions are on (type 1), with [[config:config/createnuclear-common.toml#Explosion Reactor.Duration before exploration]] at 600 and [[config:config/createnuclear-common.toml#Explosion Reactor.Size of the reactor explosion]] at 10. These are all the mod defaults, so do not let heat run away.[6]

Protect yourself

The mod's advancements ask you to craft anti-radiation armor and wear a full set to be fully protected from radiation. The pack changed the Anti Radiation Boots recipe, so craft them with this one.[4][5]

Tip: Once the reactor runs, the "Carbon Brushes" quest in the same chapter says Generator Coils can turn its SU into Forge Energy, with each Nuclear Reactor providing enough SU for around 300,000 FE/t.[3]

How does Create Nuclear work?

9 parts

Create Nuclear is built around one big multiblock, the reactor, plus a fuel chain that feeds it. You build the reactor from a handful of special blocks, load it with uranium and graphite rods, and take the power out through a shaft as mechanical energy (SU). Here is how the pieces fit together in this pack.[1][5]

The reactor blocks

Everything starts with the Reactor Casing, the block you build the reactor from. The pack changed its recipe: it is made with item application, using a Create brass casing and a steel ingot.[4][5]

Reactor CasingChanged by the pack

Item Application (create)

Recipe id: createnuclear:item_application/reactor_casing_from_steel_and_brass_casing

This recipe was changed by the pack.

The mod also lists a reactor frame and a reactor core as blocks used to build the reactor.[5]

Input: feeding the reactor

The Reactor Input stores the uranium and graphite rods that run the reactor. It does its job once the reactor is assembled, and its screen is called Reactor Input Storage.[5]

Reactor InputMod recipe

Item Application (create)

Recipe id: createnuclear:item_application/reactor_input_from_hopper_and_reactor_casing

Controller and blueprint

The Reactor Controller is the most important block. When the reactor is assembled it handles all the calculations for generating energy, and it needs a reactor blueprint with a pattern to work. The blueprint is what lets the reactor be configured according to specific models, and you craft it to design the layout of the rods in your reactor.[5]

Cooling

The Reactor Cooler is another reactor building block, crafted to cool your reactor. The pack changed its recipe.[4][5]

Heat is capped by [[config:config/createnuclear-common.toml#Rods.Maximum reactor heat]], which the config describes as the maximum heat a reactor block can handle, there to avoid reactor failure from excessive heat. The pack sets it to 1000, the same as the mod default, and the allowed range is 200 to 1000.[6]

Output: getting power out

The Reactor Output is where the energy leaves the reactor. You attach a shaft to it to extract the mechanical energy the reactor produces, which the Ponder scene shows in SU.[5]

Item Application (create)

Recipe id: createnuclear:item_application/reactor_output_from_shaft_and_reactor_casing

Fuel and rod lifespan

Rods wear out while they are in the reactor. In this pack [[config:config/createnuclear-common.toml#Rods.Uranium rod lifespan]] and [[config:config/createnuclear-common.toml#Rods.Graphite rod lifespan]] are both 3600, which matches the mod defaults. The config counts these in ticks, at 20 ticks to a second, and allows 100 to 5000.[6]

The fuel chain

The mod's advancements walk through the fuel chain. Crush coal or charcoal into Coal Dust, then press it into Graphene. Graphene goes into a mechanical crafter with a steel ingot to make the Graphite Rod, and the pack changed that recipe.[4][5]

Uranium goes through its own steps. Raw uranium is crushed into powder, and the powder is mixed into uranium liquid. This pack also adds two ways to turn a Uranium Clump into 180 units of Liquid Uranium: a fusing machine recipe and a Productive Metalworks melting recipe.[4][5]

Meltdowns

The project page warns that a reactor meltdown triggers a massive nuclear explosion and leaves a hostile Irradiated Land biome. This pack leaves the explosion settings at the mod defaults. [[config:config/createnuclear-common.toml#Explosion Reactor.Type of explosion]] is 1, where 0 means no explosion, 1 is the current explosion and 2 is the new explosion. [[config:config/createnuclear-common.toml#Explosion Reactor.Size of the reactor explosion]] is 10, and [[config:config/createnuclear-common.toml#Explosion Reactor.Duration before exploration]] is 600 (allowed range 100 to 1200).[1][6]

Watch out: The project page warns that if you update an existing world to V2 of the mod, you must completely dismantle your active reactors first. Leaving an old reactor assembled could result in corruption or an immediate nuclear meltdown.[1]

Radiation protection

Radiation is a status effect in this mod. Wearing a full set of anti-radiation armor protects you from it fully, and you can dye the armor any color. The pack changed the recipe for the Anti Radiation Boots.[4][5]

How do you progress through Create Nuclear?

5 parts

Create Nuclear in this pack is built around one big goal: a working reactor multiblock that turns uranium into stress. The pack's quest book covers it in a single quest, a quest in "Power Generation", in the Power Generation chapter (group Resources & Logistics, chapter 10 of 31). It comes after the Mechanical Crafter quest and asks you to hand in Reactor Controller, Reactor Input, Reactor Output, Reactor Casing, Reactor Frame, Reactor Cooler, Reactor Core, Graphite Rod and Uranium Rod.[3]

Below is a sensible order for tackling those items, based on the in-pack recipes. Several of them were changed by the pack, and each recipe note says so.[4]

Stage 1: casings and glass

Everything starts with Reactor Casing. The pack changed this recipe, and it is made by item application on a brass casing. Reactor Input and Reactor Output are then made by applying one more item to a casing.[4]

Stage 2: frame, cooler, core and controller

The pack changed the mechanical crafting recipes for Reactor Frame, Reactor Cooler and Reactor Core. The Reactor Controller recipe is the mod's own. The core and the frame both use a Uranium Bucket.[4]

The pack also adds a second route for all four parts through a Modern Industrialization recipe type called ftb_constructor. Each of those recipes asks for 16 Reactor Casings.[4]

Stage 3: fuel and rods

Uranium Dust can be turned into Liquid Uranium in a mixing recipe the pack changed, giving 25 per dust. The pack also adds fusing machine and melting recipes that give 90 from a dust, 90 from a Uranium GeOre Shard and 180 from a Uranium Clump. The compacting recipe turns 100 Liquid Uranium into Yellowcake.[4]

Stage 4: blueprint and power out

The quest explains that the reactor is a 5x5x7 multiblock, with a Ponder on the Controller showing the layout. It needs a blueprint telling it where graphite and uranium rods go. The quest reward is a ready-made stable blueprint that produces 1.8 Million SU, and you can experiment with your own layouts too. Put the blueprint into the Controller, then feed the Input with Uranium Rods and Graphite Rods. SU comes out of the output block at the bottom, and a good setup gives almost 2 Million SU.[3]

To make another blueprint later, the Reactor Blueprint recipe is also changed by the pack.[4]

Tip: Don't mix this up with the quest called Nuclear Reactor ("Nuclear Reactor" quest) in the M.I.: High Voltage chapter. That one belongs to Modern Industrialization and asks for that mod's own reactor items, not the Create Nuclear ones.[7]

How does Create Nuclear work with other mods?

7 parts

Create Nuclear is a Create addon, but in this pack its recipes reach into several other mods. The recipe dump shows Create, FTB Materials, Modern Industrialization, Mekanism, Productive Metalworks, Actually Additions and Create: Connected all linking up with it. Here is where each connection shows up.[1][4]

Reactor parts: Create and steel

The reactor blocks are built with Create's own machinery, through item application and mechanical crafting. The pack changed the recipes for Reactor Casing, Reactor Cooler, Reactor Core, Reactor Frame and the Reactor Blueprint, and FTB Materials is the mod those changes pull in. The Reactor Controller recipe is the mod's own, unchanged by the pack.[4]

Modern Industrialization

The pack also adds a second route through the FTB Constructor machine from Modern Industrialization. It has its own recipes for the reactor controller, cooler, core and frame, and they ask for 16 reactor casings each. The same mod's assembler can make graphite rods too.[4]

Uranium as a molten metal

Recipes added by the pack, in both the fusing machine and Productive Metalworks, melt uranium items into Liquid Uranium, with the same amounts in both:[4]

  • Dust, ingot and GeOre shard: 90 each.[4]
  • Raw ore and clump: 180 each.[4]
  • Rod: 45, nugget: 10, block of uranium: 810.[4]
  • Productive Metalworks casting runs it backwards with an ingot, nugget or rod cast: 90 for an ingot, 10 for a nugget, 45 for a rod, and 810 for a block.[4]

Create's mixing recipe, changed by the pack, gives only 25 uranium from one Uranium Dust. The melting machines give 90 from the same dust.[4]

Two more recipes cross over into other mods: an Actually Additions empowering recipe added by the pack that makes Mekanism's Polonium Pellet, and a Create: Connected recipe that makes the Fan Enriched Catalyst. Both are shown below.[4]

In the quest book

The reactor quest a quest in "Power Generation" sits in the "Power Generation" chapter, in the "Resources & Logistics" group (chapter 10 of 31), after the Mechanical Crafter quest. Its reward is a ready-made blueprint that produces 1.8 million SU.[3]

The Carbon Brushes quest a quest in "Power Generation" in the same chapter ties the reactor to power generation. It explains that Generator Coils and Carbon Brushes convert stress into Forge Energy, and says each Nuclear Reactor provides enough SU for around 300,000 FE/t. The quest book text for 16 other quests in that chapter is not covered here, so check the quest book for them.[3]

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Create Nuclear?

3 parts

Create Nuclear only shows up in one quest in the pack. It sits in the Power Generation chapter, which is chapter 10 of 31 in the book, in the group "Resources & Logistics". The chapter has 41 quests and covers most of the ways to make power.[3]

The quest is a quest in "Power Generation", and the book has no title of its own for it, so it is named after the Graphite Rod. It comes right after the Mechanical Crafter quest.[3]

What the quest asks for

You hand in one of each of the reactor parts:[3]

What the quest tells you

The quest describes the Nuclear Reactor as a 5x5x7 multiblock that can reliably generate almost 2 Million Stress Units with the right setup. To see how to build it, check the ponder on the Controller block.[3]

Once it is built, you take the Stress Units straight from the output block at the bottom.[3]

The reactor also needs a blueprint model that says how it should arrange its graphite and uranium rods. The quest reward gives you a ready-made stable blueprint that produces 1.8 Million SU, and you can experiment with your own layouts if you like. Put the blueprint into the Controller, then feed Uranium Rods and Graphite Rods into the Input Port. The next page of the quest repeats the reward layout in case you want to build a second reactor.[3]

Tip: The reward blueprint is the quickest way to a working reactor. Start with it, and only experiment once the reactor is running.[3]

Not the same as the Modern Industrialization reactor

The "M.I.: High Voltage" chapter (chapter 29 of 31, group "Tech Mods") has its own quests called Nuclear Reactor, Reactor Components and Reactor Mechanics. Those use Modern Industrialization parts, not Create Nuclear ones. Create Nuclear is only covered by the Power Generation quest above.[7]

Which Create Nuclear config options matter?

3 parts

Good news: the pack leaves every Create Nuclear option I can see in its common config at the mod default. Nothing here has been nerfed or buffed, so what you read below is also what the mod ships with. Everything lives in [[config:config/createnuclear-common.toml#Rods.Maximum reactor heat]]'s file, config/createnuclear-common.toml.[6]

Reactor explosion settings

  • [[config:config/createnuclear-common.toml#Explosion Reactor.Type of explosion]] is 1 in the pack. The file explains the values: 0 is no explosion, 1 is the current explosion and 2 is the new explosion. The allowed range is 0 to 2.[6]
  • [[config:config/createnuclear-common.toml#Explosion Reactor.Size of the reactor explosion]] is 10 in the pack, the same as the mod default.[6]
  • [[config:config/createnuclear-common.toml#Explosion Reactor.Duration before exploration]] is 600 ticks in the pack, also the mod default. The file's note gives 300 ticks as 15 seconds, so 600 is twice that. You can set it anywhere from 100 to 1,200.[6]

Rods and heat

  • [[config:config/createnuclear-common.toml#Rods.Uranium rod lifespan]] is 3,600 in the pack (mod default 3,600). The file notes that 20 ticks equal 1 second, and the allowed range is 100 to 5,000.[6]
  • [[config:config/createnuclear-common.toml#Rods.Graphite rod lifespan]] is also 3,600 in the pack (mod default 3,600), with the same range of 100 to 5,000.[6]
  • [[config:config/createnuclear-common.toml#Rods.Maximum reactor heat]] is 1,000 in the pack, the mod default. It is the maximum heat a reactor block can handle, and the file says it avoids reactor failure from excessive heat. The allowed range is 200 to 1,000, so 1,000 is already the top of that range.[6]

World generation

worldGen.disableWorldGen is false in the pack. The file describes it as preventing all worldgen added by Create from taking effect, so with it off, that worldgen is not blocked by this option.[6]

Tip: Since the pack runs the defaults, you only need to touch these values if you want to tune your own world. Setting the explosion type to 0 means no explosion at all, which is handy if you are experimenting with reactor builds.[6]

What changed in Create Nuclear between versions?

1 part

FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 includes the NeoForge build of Create Nuclear. The mod was first included in an early release of the pack, and the pack's mod list says it was already there by the earliest release it names.[2]

Create Nuclear 1.3.2-beta.3

This is the version you get in the pack right now. Its changelog is small and is mostly about fixes:[2][8]

  • Coal dust tags were refactored and the related recipes were updated for consistency.[8]
  • Glass block tags and the recipes for reinforced glass were updated. The merged pull requests behind this are named after using tags in the reinforced glass craft.[8]

The changelog describes these as bug fixes, plus a quality of life entry for the version bump. It doesn't list any new content in this release.[8]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for Create Nuclear are available, so what changed for this mod between individual pack releases is unverified.
