What is Railcraft Reborn?
2 parts
Railcraft Reborn is a port of the classic Railcraft mod to modern Minecraft, and the pack ships version 1.2.10. If you want to build a real railroad with an industry behind it, this is your mod.[1][2]
It adds a working signalling system, cart linking, locomotives and multi-block structures. It also reworks all the rail recipes, so even basic track becomes part of a bigger production chain. You craft railbeds from ties and combine them with rails to make many different track types, each with its own abilities such as speed and conduction.[1][3][4]
The industry behind the rails
Most of the mod's machines are multi-block structures, and the pack's quest chapter walks you through them. These are the main ones:[1][5]
- Blast Furnace: built from Blast Furnace Bricks in a 3x3x4 shape, it turns iron into steel.[5][6]
- Coke Oven: built from Coke Oven Bricks in a 3x3x3 shape, it turns coal into coal coke, or logs into charcoal, and gives you creosote oil as a byproduct.[5][7]
- Crusher: a 3x2x2 structure that crushes materials, for example turning ingots into dusts. It needs power to work.[5][8]
- Steam Boiler: a firebox with a boiler tank on top, such as Low Pressure Steam Boiler Tank or High Pressure Steam Boiler Tank. It makes the steam that feeds the Steam Oven, which cooks items and smelts ores.[5][9][10]
- Water Tank: built from Water Tank Siding, it collects water passively and refills your Steam Locomotive.[5][11]
Steam isn't a dead end either. A Steam Turbine turns it into electrical power, and it needs a Turbine Rotor installed to run.[12]
Where it fits in the pack
The mod has its own quest chapter, "RailCraft". Rails! ("Rails!" quest), Tracks! ("Tracks!" quest) and the Spike Maul quest ("'Switch em up'" quest) come straight after the chapter's start. The machine quests, such as Blast (Steel) Furnace ("Blast (Steel) Furnace" quest), Coke Oven ("Coke Oven" quest), Crusher ("Crusher" quest) and Boilers ("Boilers" quest), unlock after the Machines quest. Steam Oven ("Steam Oven" quest) follows Boilers.[5]
Unverified The sources don't show how this mod fits into the pack's wider progression beyond its own quest chapter, so treat any placement beyond that chapter as unconfirmed.
How do you get started with Railcraft Reborn?
6 parts
Railcraft Reborn is all about trains, and the pack's quest book gives you a clear path into it. Rails and tracks come first, then a few machines that make the better materials. Here is the order I would follow.[1][5]
Start with cheap tracks
The Rails! quest says vanilla rails work for a lot of things, but upgraded rails need more special items, and some of those need machines. So start cheap. Abandoned Track is a good first track: it needs less wood and creosote than iron tracks and can stay suspended, which helps when you need to cross a gap. The catch is that carts can start to derail once they go faster than 0.35 blocks per tick.[5][13]

If iron is what you are short of, Strap Iron Track is the other budget option. It is much slower than the other tracks, but the quest says there is no risk of derailment.[5][15]
Build a Manual Rolling Machine
The Manual Rolling Machine is your small crafting machine for many Railcraft materials. If the grid holds enough for only one cycle, you can click the output display to force the craft. When it can make more than one, it autocrafts while you keep looking at it. If you walk away mid-craft, it aborts and puts the items in your inventory, so you must craft the last recipe by hand.[5][16]
Make a Coke Oven
Next comes the Coke Oven. It turns coal into coal coke and logs into charcoal, and it produces creosote oil as a byproduct. Place 26 Coke Oven Bricks in a 3x3x3 shape with the center hollow. You know it is finished when you can open its GUI. The process is slow, so you may want several ovens, but they cannot be built adjacent to each other.[5][7]
Make a Blast Furnace for steel
The Blast Furnace turns iron into steel. You need 34 Blast Furnace Bricks, placed 3 wide, 3 long and 4 tall, with the two center blocks hollow. Put iron in any form into its GUI to get steel and granulated sand. Steel matters because several recipes in the pack call for it, such as the Advanced Item Loader.[5][14]

Track kits and the Spike Maul
Track Parts are used with rails to make special rails that stop, move or detect carts. The Activator Track Kit is a simple one to try first: it activates whatever cart goes over it.[5][14]

The Crusher, once you have power
The Crusher is a 3x2x2 multiblock that crushes blocks and ingots into crafting materials, and it needs power to run. The pack changed its recipe, so follow the one shown here rather than what you remember from other versions.[5][14]

How does Railcraft Reborn work?
7 parts
Railcraft Reborn is built around a few big ideas: multiblock machines, steam and fluid handling, a signalling system, and tracks made from rails plus railbeds. This section covers how those systems work in this pack, as far as the in-game guide and the mod's own text explain them.[1][4][17]
Multiblock structures
Most of the big machines are hollow structures you assemble from special blocks. The rule they share is spacing: Coke Ovens, Blast Furnaces and Rock Crushers cannot be built adjacent to each other, so leave at least one tile between two of the same machine.[6][7][8]
- Coke Oven: a 3x3x3 hollow brick structure made of 26 special bricks. It turns Coal into Coal Coke or Wood into Charcoal and produces Creosote Oil as a byproduct. The guide warns that the conversion is slow, so you will probably want several ovens.[7]
- Blast Furnace: a 3x3x4 hollow brick structure made of 34 special bricks. It converts Iron Ingots into Steel Ingots.[6]
- Rock Crusher: a 3x2x2 structure made of 12 special blocks. It processes various materials, and the mod also uses it to recycle empty disposable batteries.[8][16]
- Steam Oven: a 2x2x2 structure that cooks items when fed Steam. It cooks up to 9 items at once in 256 ticks (12.8 seconds).[10]
- Water Tank: a 3x3x3 hollow structure built from Water Tank Siding, put together much like a Coke Oven.[11]
Fluids and storage
The Coke Oven holds up to 64,000 units of Creosote Oil. You can pull it out with Buckets or Glass Bottles, and each one holds 1,000 units. Filled Buckets don't stack, but filled Bottles do.[7]
The Water Tank is a passive water source for your railway. It holds 400 buckets of water and can refill Steam Locomotives or other water-consuming devices. How fast it refills depends on the biome, the weather, and whether the tank can see the sky, so the guide recommends keeping your railway out of the desert.[11]
For bulk storage, the Iron Tank comes in 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 and 9x9 footprints, with a height of 4 to 8 blocks. You lay down a frame of Iron Tank Wall blocks, then fill the top, bottom and sides with any mix of Wall, Gauge or Valve blocks. To stack tanks, place a couple of Valve blocks in the center where the tanks touch.[18]
Steam power
A Steam Boiler is built in layers. The first layer is the Firebox, which is either Solid Fueled (normal furnace fuels such as Charcoal or Coal Coke) or Liquid Fueled (Creosote Oil, Bio-Fuel or Fuel). On top of it you build a Boiler Tank, which is either Low Pressure or High Pressure. High Pressure tanks produce twice the steam, while Low Pressure tanks are generally more efficient.[9]
The Firebox size sets how big a tank you can build. A 1x1 Firebox handles a single cubic meter. A 2x2 handles 8 or 12 cubic meters. A 3x3 handles 18, 27 or 36 cubic meters. Bigger boilers use fuel more efficiently, so one large boiler beats several small ones.[9]
The Steam Turbine turns Steam into power. Its tooltip says it generates FE from Steam, outputs water to the bottom, and requires a Turbine Rotor. The guide says a Rotor lasts several days of constant real-time use, and you can repair one by combining two rotors with the vanilla repair mechanic.[12][16]
Charge, batteries and automation
Railcraft also has its own Charge network, which powers things like the Electric Locomotive, Electric Feeder Unit and the electric tracks. The Charge Meter measures usage in machines, wires or tracks, and it records network usage over a 5-second period. Disposable, Nickel-Iron and Nickel-Zinc batteries are made to work with this network: the Nickel-Iron one is for general use and the Nickel-Zinc one for low draw and long-term storage.[16][19]
The Powered Rolling Machine can be automated by simply piping items in and out. On both the Powered and Manual Rolling Machine, if the grid holds only enough items for one cycle, you can click the output display to force crafting.[16]
Manipulator blocks have configurable modes. The transfer modes are listed below, followed by the redstone modes.[16]
- Transfer mode All moves all matching items.[16]
- Transfer mode Excess moves items until the source matches the filter.[16]
- Transfer mode Stock moves items until the destination matches the filter.[16]
- Transfer mode Transfer moves exactly as much as is in the filter.[16]
- Redstone mode Complete processes until the operation is complete.[16]
- Redstone mode Immediate processes until it runs out of room or supply.[16]
- Redstone mode Partial works like Immediate but keeps pristine carts.[16]
- Redstone mode Manual never emits a redstone signal.[16]
Tracks and track kits
Tracks are made by combining railbeds (crafted from ties) with rails. The track type decides things like speed, conduction, collision, whether the track can hang unsupported, and explosion resistance.[3][4]
- Abandoned: it can stay suspended, can make carts derail, and grows grass next to tall grass. Mobs and players can't walk on suspended abandoned tracks, so they're handy for crossing a canyon.[13]
- Strap Iron (wooden): its speed limit is only 30% of the iron track type. It needs far less iron, so it suits scenic tours and precision timing.[15]
- Iron (standard): essentially equal to the vanilla rail, and it accepts Track Kits like the other flex tracks.[20]
- Reinforced: it has a blast resistance of 45 and runs at 125% of normal track speed. It always drops once its supporting block is removed, so place it on blast-resistant blocks.[16][21]
- High Speed: carts can travel 2.5 times faster than normal, in a straight line only, and this speed is configurable. Leaving the track without slowing down always causes an explosion.[22]
Abandoned tracks start to risk derailing above 0.35 blocks per tick. Past that speed, every tick carries a small chance of a derailment, and the chance builds to 4% within one second. If one cart in a train derails, the whole train derails.[13]
Special track behaviours come from Track Kits. In this pack you start from a base track, such as Abandoned Track, which is crafted from a Standard Rail and a Wooden Tie. You then combine it with a kit, for example the Booster Track Kit, in a shapeless recipe.[14]

Base track plus a kit gives the special track.
The Wye and Turnout tracks are different. They are placed by right-clicking a flex track with a spike maul and cycling through the options, and their abandoned versions are crafted from rail and tie rather than base track plus kit. A Turnout can't be driven directly by redstone: you need a Switch Motor placed opposite it, or a Switch Lever for manual control.[14][23][24]
Signalling
Signals work as a Controller and Receiver pair. A Block Signal detects carts between itself and a paired Block Signal, and sends the resulting aspect to a paired Receiver. The Signal Block Surveyor pairs two Block Signals, and the Signal Tuner pairs a Controller with a Receiver (right-click one, then the other). The Signal Tuner also clears a pairing.[16][25][26]
- Receiver Box: once paired, its GUI lets you pick which aspects emit a redstone current.[27]
- Controller Box: placed next to a Receiver Box, it passes the aspect on to a paired Receiver. Two Receivers next to one Controller make it send the most restrictive aspect. You can't link a controller to two receivers.[28]
- Analog Signal Controller Box: emits an aspect based on the redstone strength it receives, which you set in its GUI.[29]
- Signal Capacitor Box: emits a redstone pulse for a set time. In Rising Edge mode the timer starts as soon as the input arrives, and in Falling Edge mode it starts when the input turns off.[16][30]
- Signal Block Relay Box: pairs with up to two other Block Signals or Relays, and works as an end cap or an extender, for example to wrap a Signal Block around corners.[31]
Trackman's Goggles can show the signals linking a Controller and Receiver. They display one aura at a time, and you change it by right-clicking or with the change-aura key.[32]
Pack config
The only Railcraft config in the sources is the client file, and it covers visuals and messages rather than machine behaviour. ghostTrainEnabled and polarExpressEnabled are both true. locomotiveLightLevel is 14 on a 0 to 15 scale, and only applies when a dynamic lights mod is present. showBetaMessage is false.[33]
How do you progress through Railcraft Reborn?
6 parts
Railcraft's quests give you a clear path. The Rails! and Tracks! quests unlock after the main RailCraft quest, and the machine quests (Blast Furnace, Coke Oven, Crusher, Boilers) unlock after a Machines quest. The cart and train quests sit behind Carts 'N' Trains!. Here is the order I'd tackle it in.[5]
Step 1: Rolling machines and your steel setup
Start with the Manual Rolling Machine. It's your hand-crafting station for lots of Railcraft materials, and it aborts if you walk away mid-craft. Once you have power, the Powered Rolling Machine automates the job.[5]

Next comes the Blast Furnace, a multiblock that turns iron into steel. It needs 34 Blast Furnace Bricks in a 3x3x4 shape with the two centre blocks hollow. Several later recipes in the chain call for steel, so this is your first big gate.[5][14]

The Coke Oven is a 3x3x3 build from 26 Coke Oven Bricks with one hollow block in the centre. It gives you coal coke and creosote, and it makes charcoal from logs.[5][7]
The Crusher is a 3x2x2 machine that needs power. The pack changed its recipe, so don't rely on what you remember from the base mod.[5][14]

Step 2: Rails and track types
Rails are made in the Rolling Machine, and tracks are made from rails plus a railbed or tie. These are the main rail recipes in the pack.[5][14]

Here is how the quests describe each track type:[5]
- Abandoned Track: cheap and good for looks. It can bridge a few blocks without support, but your cart can derail.[5]
- Strap Iron Track: also a budget option. It's much slower than other tracks, but there's no risk of derailment.[5]
- Reinforced Track: slightly faster than normal rails and doesn't blow up.[5]
- High Speed Track: faster again. It needs Track Kits to build up speed, and you should take corners carefully.[5]
- Electric Track: made for Electric Locomotives. It's powered by Frames and hurts if you touch it.[5]
- High Speed Electric Track: the electric version of high speed. It needs both speed boosts and Frames, and you need to be careful on corners and when touching it.[5]

Step 3: Track kits and switching
Track Parts are the base of every Track Kit. You can roll them from bronze nuggets.[5][14]

The quests group the kits by job: redstone (Activator, Detector), stopping carts (Locking, Gated, Buffer Stop), moving carts (Transition, Booster, Control, Throttle, Launcher) and moving mobs (Embarking, Disembarking, Dumping). There are also single-purpose kits for One-Way, Routing, Coupler and Whistle.[5]
For junctions, use a Spike Maul (Iron Spike Maul, Steel Spike Maul or Diamond Spike Maul) on normal tracks to switch their mode. That gives you Turnout, Wye and Junction tracks, and the Switch Track Lever steers them.[5]
Step 4: Steam power and locomotives
The Steam Locomotive is the basic locomotive. It runs on water and furnace fuel and needs constant water. Build a Water Tank out of Water Tank Siding: a hollow 3x3x3 that holds up to 400 buckets and fills based on biome, weather and sky access.[5][11]
Boilers need a firebox with a tank on top. A 1x1 firebox takes a 1x1 boiler, a 2x2 takes a 2x2x3 boiler, and a 3x3 takes a 3x3x4 boiler. Always keep a steady water supply going to the firebox, or you risk an explosion. From there you can build the Steam Oven (2x2x2) or a Steam Turbine, which needs a Turbine Rotor and makes FE and EU.[5][9][10][12]
Step 5: Electric trains and automation
For electric rail you need Frame blocks, which carry power to every connected Frame. The Electric Locomotive needs no fuel. It runs off the Frames under the Electric Tracks and can only run on them.[5]

The Tunnel Bore needs a bore head (iron, bronze, steel or diamond), fuel and rails to run on its own.[5]
Endgame: the Creative Locomotive
The Creative Locomotive has its own quest in the Creative chapter, after Fully Automated ATM Star. It needs no fuel or energy, just rails. The pack adds a recipe for it that the base mod doesn't have.[14][34]

How does Railcraft Reborn work with other mods?
4 parts
Railcraft Reborn mostly keeps to itself in this pack, but the pack does wire it into other mods in a few places. Here are the connections that show up in the in-pack recipes.[14]
Creative Locomotive
The Creative Locomotive is the big one. The pack adds its own recipe for it with a KubeJS script, and that recipe uses items from the endgame progression: Unobtainium Gear and ATM Star Shard. Railcraft's own Charge Motor is part of it too.[14]

The quest for it sits in the Creative chapter and comes after the Fully Automated ATM Star quest. See "Creative Locomotive" quest.[34]
Advanced loaders and unloaders
The pack changed the recipes for the Advanced Item Loader and the Advanced Item Unloader. Both now need an item from Mekanism Tools, plus tagged steel ingots and redstone dust. Check the recipes below for the exact in-pack versions.[14]

Steel from the Blast Furnace
The pack changed the Railcraft Blast Furnace recipes so that they give Steel Ingot. That covers the Iron Crowbar and the Railcraft steel tools and armor, such as the Steel Pickaxe, Steel Sword and Steel Chestplate. Each of these has its own blasting recipe that outputs that steel ingot.[14]
The Blast Furnace itself is a multiblock built from Blast Furnace Bricks, and the quest describes it as the machine that turns iron into steel. See "Blast (Steel) Furnace" quest.[5]
Saltpeter
The pack adds a shapeless recipe that turns a Saltpeter Block back into Saltpeter Dust.[14]
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Railcraft Reborn?
4 parts
Most of the Railcraft quests sit in the pack's "RailCraft" chapter. A few more are scattered through other chapters: one in Creative, one in Building Tips and one in Tips and Tricks. Almost every quest asks you to craft or obtain a single item (or one of several), so this is a guided tour of machines, rails and carts.[5][34][35][36]
Machines and steam power
These quests unlock after a "Machines" quest. It isn't in my sources, so I can't say where it lives. Start with a quest in "RailCraft", the Manual Rolling Machine. The quest says you must build the last recipe by hand. a quest in "RailCraft" follows it and asks for the Powered Rolling Machine, which autocrafts everything but needs power.[5]
- "Blast (Steel) Furnace" quest asks for Blast Furnace Bricks. The quest says the multiblock needs 34 of them, is 3 wide, 3 long and 4 tall, and turns iron into steel.[5]
- "Coke Oven" quest asks for Coke Oven Bricks. The multiblock is 3x3x3 and uses 26 bricks, with the center hollow.[5]
- "Crusher" quest asks for the Crusher, a 3x2x2 multiblock that needs power.[5]
- "Water Tank" quest asks for the Water Tank Siding. It's built as a 3x3x3 with a hollow center and holds water for Steam Locomotives.[5]
- "Boilers" quest is the boiler quest. It wants a low or high pressure boiler tank plus a solid or fluid fueled firebox.[5]
- Two quests unlock after Boilers. "Steam Oven" quest asks for the Steam Oven, and "Steam Turbine" quest asks for the Turbine Rotor for the Steam Turbine.[5]
Rails, tracks and track kits
Two quests open this branch, both after a quest named "RailCraft". "Rails!" quest accepts any one of the rails, from wooden up to electric. "Tracks!" quest asks for Track Parts, which you use to make track kits.[5]
- After Rails!, the track-type quests are "Abandoned Tracks" quest, "Strap Iron Tracks" quest, "Reinforced Tracks" quest, "High Speed Tracks" quest, "Electric Tracks" quest and "High Speed Electric Tracks" quest.[5]
- After Tracks!, the track-kit quests are "Track Kits for moving entities" quest, "Track Kits for using Redstone" quest, "Track Kits for stopping Carts" quest, "Track Kits for moving Carts" quest, "Track Kit One Way" quest, "Track Kit Routing" quest, "Track Kit Coupler" quest and "Track Kit Whistle" quest.[5]
- "'Switch em up'" quest asks for any spike maul, such as the Iron Spike Maul. Hitting a normal track with it switches its mode.[5]
- The maul unlocks "Turnout Tracks" quest, "Wye Tracks" quest and "Junction Tracks" quest. Together they unlock a quest in "RailCraft", which asks for the Switch Track Lever.[5]
Carts, trains and loaders
The rest of the chapter follows a quest named "Carts 'N' Trains!". Its own entry isn't in my sources.[5]
- "Steam Locomotive" quest is the Steam Locomotive. "New Carts" quest covers the tank and energy minecarts, and "Carts and Tracks" quest covers the track layer, relayer, remover and undercutter carts.[5]
- "Cart Dispenser" quest asks for the Cart Dispenser, which leads to "Train Dispenser" quest and the Train Dispenser.[5]
- "Item Loader" quest leads to "Advanced Item Loader" quest. "Item Unloader" quest leads to "Advanced Item Unloader" quest. "Fluid Loader" quest leads to "Fluid Unloader" quest.[5]
- "Frames" quest asks for the Frame. Together with Electric Tracks, it unlocks "Electric Locomotive" quest and the Electric Locomotive.[5]
- "Tunnel Bore, Bore Head" quest asks for a tunnel bore head, which leads to "Tunnel Bore" quest and the Tunnel Bore.[5]
There's also a standalone quest, a quest in "RailCraft", for the Seasons Crowbar. It lists no prerequisite and changes how a Locomotive looks.[5]
Quests in other chapters
- In Building Tips, "Railcraft Stones" quest comes after a "Stone Blocks" quest. It asks for Quarried Stone or Abyssal Stone, decorative stones you can combine into polished, chiseled and brick versions.[35]
- In Tips and Tricks, "Mo' Professions" quest comes after "Easy Villagers". It accepts either rolling machine as one of its many options. The quest text says the Manual Rolling Machine gives the Trackman profession and the Powered one gives the Cartman.[36]
- In Chapter 4: Creative, "Creative Locomotive" quest comes after "Fully Automated ATM Star" and asks for the Creative Locomotive. The quest says it works without fuel or energy and only needs rails.[34]
Unverified The Creative Locomotive quest says the item has no recipe by default. The sources don't show whether the pack adds one, so check in game before planning around it.
Which Railcraft Reborn config options matter?
1 part
The only Railcraft Reborn config file I can confirm for this pack is the client one, so everything below is about visuals and messages. These options don't change how the rails, carts or machines work.[33]
Client options in this pack
- locomotiveLightLevel is set to 14, and the allowed range is 0 to 15. It controls how bright your locomotive is when the Dynamic Lights mod is present. Setting it to 0 turns locomotive lighting off.[33]
- ghostTrainEnabled is set to true, so Ghost Train rendering is on. Change it to false to disable it.[33]
- polarExpressEnabled is set to true, so Polar Express (snow) rendering is on. Change it to false to disable it.[33]
- showBetaMessage is set to false, so the message telling you that you're on a beta version is turned off.[33]
Unverified The sources don't show the mod's default values, so I can't say which of these settings the pack changed. I also found no common or server config for Railcraft Reborn in the sources, so I can't confirm any gameplay options.
What changed in Railcraft Reborn between versions?
1 part
All the Mods 10 8.1 ships Railcraft Reborn 1.2.10. Railcraft Reborn has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 2.25 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the modpack.[2]
Version bumps in the pack changelogs
The pack changelogs only record which version of the mod was swapped in. Here are the updates, newest first:[37][38][39][40][41]
- All the Mods 10 5.5: updated from 1.2.9 to 1.2.10, the version still in 8.1.[2][37]
- All the Mods 10 5.3: updated from 1.2.8 to 1.2.9.[38]
- All the Mods 10 4.15: updated from 1.2.7 to 1.2.8.[39]
- All the Mods 10 4.6: updated from 1.2.5 to 1.2.7.[40]
- All the Mods 10 2.32: updated from 1.2.4 to 1.2.5.[41]
Unverified What actually changed inside the mod in each of these versions (new features, fixes, balance changes) is unverified. The changelogs for the shipped jars aren't available, so this section only lists which versions the pack moved through.
