What is Railcraft Reborn?

2 parts

Railcraft Reborn is a port of the classic Railcraft mod to modern Minecraft, published with permission from the original author, CovertJaguar. This pack includes version 1.2.5 for Minecraft 1.21.1, and from 1.21 onwards the mod supports only NeoForge.[1][2]

It's for you if you want to turn train travel into a whole industry. The mod reworks all rail recipes, so even basic track becomes a small project. It also adds a crowbar, a working signalling system, cart linking and locomotives, and multi-block structures.[1]

What you'll build

Tracks are crafted from railbeds, which come from ties, combined with rails. That gives you many track types with different abilities, such as speed and conduction. The pack's quest chapter starts you on the rail types, from Wooden Rail up to Electric Rail, and on Track Parts.[3][4][5]

The industrial side comes from multi-block structures. The Blast Furnace turns iron ingots into steel ingots, and the Coke Oven turns coal into coal coke or wood into charcoal. The Crusher processes various materials, and the Steam Boiler makes steam for the Steam Oven and the Steam Turbine. A Water Tank, built from Water Tank Siding, keeps your Steam Locomotives topped up with water.[6][7][8][9][10][11][12]

Carts are the payoff. The mod includes the Steam Locomotive, the Electric Locomotive, the Tunnel Bore and the Minecart with Tank. Loaders, unloaders and dispensers handle the logistics around them.[1][5]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack has a dedicated Railcraft quest chapter. Several quests branch off the structure quests, such as a quest in "?" for Coke Oven bricks and a quest in "?" for Blast Furnace bricks. Others follow the boiler quest a quest in "?", such as a quest in "?" for the Steam Oven and a quest in "?" for the Turbine Rotor. The rail quests start at a quest in "?".[5]

Unverified Where the chapter sits in the wider pack progression is unverified, because the quest data available here is incomplete.

How do you get started with Railcraft Reborn?

7 parts

Railcraft Reborn reworks every rail recipe so that building a railroad becomes a small industry of its own. So the first steps are about the machines that feed your tracks. Here is the order I'd go in, and why.[1]

Start with the Manual Rolling Machine

Begin with the Manual Rolling Machine (a quest in "?"). It rolls metal into various shapes. If the grid holds only enough items for one cycle, click the output display to force the craft. Later you can move up to the Powered Rolling Machine (a quest in "?"), which can be automated by piping items in and out.[5][13]

Build a Coke Oven

Next, build a Coke Oven. It is a hollow 3x3x3 brick structure that turns Coal into Coal Coke, or Wood into Charcoal, and gives you Creosote Oil as a byproduct. Creosote matters because tracks use it: abandoned tracks, for example, need less wood and creosote than iron tracks. The quest a quest in "?" asks for 26 Coke Oven Bricks, which is exactly the brick count for one oven.[5][7][14]

Tip: Coking is slow, and ovens can't be built adjacent to each other, so leave at least one tile between them. If you plan to make a lot of rails, build several ovens.[7]

Build a Blast Furnace

The Blast Furnace is a hollow 3x3x4 brick structure that converts Iron Ingots into Steel Ingots. Its quest, a quest in "?", asks for 34 Blast Furnace Bricks. Like the oven, it can't be built adjacent to another furnace.[5][6]

Get a Crusher

The Crusher is the next machine to aim for (a quest in "?"). The pack changed its recipe, and the in-game guide page still describes a different build cost, so go by the recipe below rather than the guide text.[5][8][15]

Changed by the pack, so don't trust the in-game guide page for its cost.

In the quest book, the rolling machine, coke oven, blast furnace and crusher are separate branches that all follow the same earlier quest. The order above is my suggestion, and the quests don't enforce it.[5]

Your first tracks

Tracks are made by combining a railbed with rails, and the rail quest (a quest in "?") accepts any rail type. For a cheap first line, try Abandoned Track (a quest in "?"). It is made with normal rails and a single Wooden Tie, and it is a good pick when you are short on creosote or time.[4][5][14][15]

Watch out: Carts can derail on abandoned tracks if they go too fast. Above 0.35 blocks per tick, a cart has a chance to derail every tick, and one derailed cart derails the whole train. Treat it as a quick, budget track, not your main line.[14]

If iron is tight, Strap Iron Track (a quest in "?") is the low-iron option. It is made from wooden rails and wooden railbeds, but its speed limit is only 30% of the iron track type.[5][16]

A spike maul for junctions

Make a spike maul to turn a regular track into turnouts, wyes and intersections. The quest a quest in "?" accepts the iron, steel or diamond version.[5][13]

Steam and water

The boiler and water quests branch off the same earlier quest as the machines above. A Steam Boiler starts with a firebox, either Solid Fueled Firebox or Fluid Fueled Firebox, with a boiler tank built above it (a quest in "?"). For a water supply, Water Tank Siding builds a Water Tank (a quest in "?"), which can refill your Steam Locomotives.[5][9][12]

How does Railcraft Reborn work?

7 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Railcraft Reborn is built around a few big ideas: multiblock machines, steam and fluid handling, a signalling system, and tracks made from rails plus railbeds. This section covers how those systems work in this pack, as far as the in-game guide and the mod's own text explain them.[1][4][17]

Multiblock structures

Most of the big machines are hollow structures you assemble from special blocks. The rule they share is spacing: Coke Ovens, Blast Furnaces and Rock Crushers cannot be built adjacent to each other, so leave at least one tile between two of the same machine.[6][7][8]

  • Coke Oven: a 3x3x3 hollow brick structure made of 26 special bricks. It turns Coal into Coal Coke or Wood into Charcoal and produces Creosote Oil as a byproduct. The guide warns that the conversion is slow, so you will probably want several ovens.[7]
  • Blast Furnace: a 3x3x4 hollow brick structure made of 34 special bricks. It converts Iron Ingots into Steel Ingots.[6]
  • Rock Crusher: a 3x2x2 structure made of 12 special blocks. It processes various materials, and the mod also uses it to recycle empty disposable batteries.[8][18]
  • Steam Oven: a 2x2x2 structure that cooks items when fed Steam. It cooks up to 9 items at once in 256 ticks (12.8 seconds).[10]
  • Water Tank: a 3x3x3 hollow structure built from Water Tank Siding, put together much like a Coke Oven.[12]

Fluids and storage

The Coke Oven holds up to 64,000 units of Creosote Oil. You can pull it out with Buckets or Glass Bottles, and each one holds 1,000 units. Filled Buckets don't stack, but filled Bottles do.[7]

The Water Tank is a passive water source for your railway. It holds 400 buckets of water and can refill Steam Locomotives or other water-consuming devices. How fast it refills depends on the biome, the weather, and whether the tank can see the sky, so the guide recommends keeping your railway out of the desert.[12]

For bulk storage, the Iron Tank comes in 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 and 9x9 footprints, with a height of 4 to 8 blocks. You lay down a frame of Iron Tank Wall blocks, then fill the top, bottom and sides with any mix of Wall, Gauge or Valve blocks. To stack tanks, place a couple of Valve blocks in the center where the tanks touch.[19]

Steam power

A Steam Boiler is built in layers. The first layer is the Firebox, which is either Solid Fueled (normal furnace fuels such as Charcoal or Coal Coke) or Liquid Fueled (Creosote Oil, Bio-Fuel or Fuel). On top of it you build a Boiler Tank, which is either Low Pressure or High Pressure. High Pressure tanks produce twice the steam, while Low Pressure tanks are generally more efficient.[9]

The Firebox size sets how big a tank you can build. A 1x1 Firebox handles a single cubic meter. A 2x2 handles 8 or 12 cubic meters. A 3x3 handles 18, 27 or 36 cubic meters. Bigger boilers use fuel more efficiently, so one large boiler beats several small ones.[9]

Watch out: Feed water to the Firebox, not the Tanks, and keep the stream constant. Introducing water to a hot, dry boiler risks a massive explosion. Boilers are pretty safe as long as the water supply never runs dry.[9]
Tip: A cold boiler can use up to 8x more fuel than one at max heat, and larger boilers take longer to heat up. The guide recommends leaving your boiler running instead of shutting it down between uses.[9]

The Steam Turbine turns Steam into power. Its tooltip says it generates FE from Steam, outputs water to the bottom, and requires a Turbine Rotor. The guide says a Rotor lasts several days of constant real-time use, and you can repair one by combining two rotors with the vanilla repair mechanic.[11][18]

Charge, batteries and automation

Railcraft also has its own Charge network, which powers things like the Electric Locomotive, Electric Feeder Unit and the electric tracks. The Charge Meter measures usage in machines, wires or tracks, and it records network usage over a 5-second period. Disposable, Nickel-Iron and Nickel-Zinc batteries are made to work with this network: the Nickel-Iron one is for general use and the Nickel-Zinc one for low draw and long-term storage.[18][20]

The Powered Rolling Machine can be automated by simply piping items in and out. On both the Powered and Manual Rolling Machine, if the grid holds only enough items for one cycle, you can click the output display to force crafting.[18]

Manipulator blocks have configurable modes. The transfer modes are listed below, followed by the redstone modes.[18]

  • Transfer mode All moves all matching items.[18]
  • Transfer mode Excess moves items until the source matches the filter.[18]
  • Transfer mode Stock moves items until the destination matches the filter.[18]
  • Transfer mode Transfer moves exactly as much as is in the filter.[18]
  • Redstone mode Complete processes until the operation is complete.[18]
  • Redstone mode Immediate processes until it runs out of room or supply.[18]
  • Redstone mode Partial works like Immediate but keeps pristine carts.[18]
  • Redstone mode Manual never emits a redstone signal.[18]

Tracks and track kits

Tracks are made by combining railbeds (crafted from ties) with rails. The track type decides things like speed, conduction, collision, whether the track can hang unsupported, and explosion resistance.[3][4]

  • Abandoned: it can stay suspended, can make carts derail, and grows grass next to tall grass. Mobs and players can't walk on suspended abandoned tracks, so they're handy for crossing a canyon.[14]
  • Strap Iron (wooden): its speed limit is only 30% of the iron track type. It needs far less iron, so it suits scenic tours and precision timing.[16]
  • Iron (standard): essentially equal to the vanilla rail, and it accepts Track Kits like the other flex tracks.[21]
  • Reinforced: it has a blast resistance of 45 and runs at 125% of normal track speed. It always drops once its supporting block is removed, so place it on blast-resistant blocks.[18][22]
  • High Speed: carts can travel 2.5 times faster than normal, in a straight line only, and this speed is configurable. Leaving the track without slowing down always causes an explosion.[23]

Abandoned tracks start to risk derailing above 0.35 blocks per tick. Past that speed, every tick carries a small chance of a derailment, and the chance builds to 4% within one second. If one cart in a train derails, the whole train derails.[14]

Special track behaviours come from Track Kits. In this pack you start from a base track, such as Abandoned Track, which is crafted from a Standard Rail and a Wooden Tie. You then combine it with a kit, for example the Booster Track Kit, in a shapeless recipe.[24]

Base track plus a kit gives the special track.

The Wye and Turnout tracks are different. They are placed by right-clicking a flex track with a spike maul and cycling through the options, and their abandoned versions are crafted from rail and tie rather than base track plus kit. A Turnout can't be driven directly by redstone: you need a Switch Motor placed opposite it, or a Switch Lever for manual control.[24][25][26]

Signalling

Signals work as a Controller and Receiver pair. A Block Signal detects carts between itself and a paired Block Signal, and sends the resulting aspect to a paired Receiver. The Signal Block Surveyor pairs two Block Signals, and the Signal Tuner pairs a Controller with a Receiver (right-click one, then the other). The Signal Tuner also clears a pairing.[18][27][28]

  • Receiver Box: once paired, its GUI lets you pick which aspects emit a redstone current.[29]
  • Controller Box: placed next to a Receiver Box, it passes the aspect on to a paired Receiver. Two Receivers next to one Controller make it send the most restrictive aspect. You can't link a controller to two receivers.[30]
  • Analog Signal Controller Box: emits an aspect based on the redstone strength it receives, which you set in its GUI.[31]
  • Signal Capacitor Box: emits a redstone pulse for a set time. In Rising Edge mode the timer starts as soon as the input arrives, and in Falling Edge mode it starts when the input turns off.[18][32]
  • Signal Block Relay Box: pairs with up to two other Block Signals or Relays, and works as an end cap or an extender, for example to wrap a Signal Block around corners.[33]

Trackman's Goggles can show the signals linking a Controller and Receiver. They display one aura at a time, and you change it by right-clicking or with the change-aura key.[34]

Pack config

The only Railcraft config in the sources is the client file, and it covers visuals and messages rather than machine behaviour. ghostTrainEnabled and polarExpressEnabled are both true. locomotiveLightLevel is 14 on a 0 to 15 scale, and only applies when a dynamic lights mod is present. showBetaMessage is false.[35]

How do you progress through Railcraft Reborn?

5 parts

The pack's Railcraft quest chapter has no named quests. Each quest just asks you to hold a particular item, so the chapter reads like a tech tree. It splits into three branches: rails and tracks, the industrial and steam multiblocks, and carts and logistics. Here is how I'd work through them.[5]

Stage 1: Rolling machines and rails

Rolling is where rails come from. Rails are not made on a normal crafting grid, they use the mod's own rolling recipe type. Your first machine is the Manual Rolling Machine (a quest in "?"), and the follow-up quest a quest in "?" asks for the Powered Rolling Machine.[5][15]

The rail quest, a quest in "?", accepts any one of the six rail types: Wooden Rail, Standard Rail, Advanced Rail, Reinforced Rail, High Speed Rail or Electric Rail. These three rolling recipes show how the rails step up:[5]

Stage 2: Track types

In Railcraft you combine a railbed with a rail to make a track, and each track type has its own abilities, such as speed, conduction and explosion resistance. The rail quest unlocks one quest per track type: abandoned (a quest in "?"), strap iron (a quest in "?"), reinforced (a quest in "?"), electric (a quest in "?"), high speed (a quest in "?") and high speed electric (a quest in "?").[3][4][5]

Next, grab a spike maul. a quest in "?" accepts the Iron Spike Maul, Steel Spike Maul or Diamond Spike Maul. It leads to the turnout (a quest in "?"), wye (a quest in "?") and junction (a quest in "?") track quests. The quest for the Switch Track Lever, a quest in "?", comes after all three.[5]

Once you have Track Parts, a whole set of track kit quests opens up. They cover the One-Way Track Kit, Coupler Track Kit, Whistle Track Kit and Routing Track Kit. They also include the activator and detector kits, the locking, gated and buffer stop kits, the embarking, disembarking and dumping kits, and the booster, control, throttle, launcher and transition kits.[5]

Stage 3: Industry and steam

The industrial branch asks you to build the multiblocks. The coke oven and blast furnace make materials, and the crusher and steam gear come after.[5]

Steel shows up throughout the later recipes, so build the Blast Furnace early.[6][15]

Once your boiler is running, two quests unlock. a quest in "?" is for the Steam Oven, a 2x2x2 structure that cooks up to 9 items at once in 256 ticks (12.8 seconds). a quest in "?" is for the Turbine Rotor, which the Steam Turbine needs in order to turn steam into electrical power.[5][10][11]

Watch out: Water has to go into the Firebox, not the tanks, and the supply must be constant. Adding water to a hot, dry boiler risks a massive explosion.[9]

Stage 4: Carts, loaders and locomotives

The cart branch covers moving things around. It includes the Steam Locomotive (a quest in "?"), the item and fluid loaders and unloaders, and the Cart Dispenser (a quest in "?"). The Train Dispenser (a quest in "?") comes after the Cart Dispenser. There are also quests for the Frame, the track layer, relayer, remover and undercutter carts, and the tank and energy minecarts.[5]

Loaders upgrade in two steps. The Advanced Item Loader (a quest in "?") comes after the Item Loader (a quest in "?"), and the Advanced Item Unloader (a quest in "?") comes after the Item Unloader (a quest in "?"). The fluid unloader quest follows the fluid loader quest. The pack changed the recipes for both advanced loaders and for the Minecart with Energy cell.[5][15]

Two more quests are worth knowing about. a quest in "?" in the Railcraft chapter has no prerequisite and asks for a Seasons Crowbar, which the in-game guide says can only be obtained in Workshops. a quest in "?" in the building tips chapter accepts Abyssal Stone or Quarried Stone.[5][37][38]

How does Railcraft Reborn work with other mods?

5 parts

Railcraft Reborn mostly keeps to its own rails, but the pack ties it into other mods in a few places. The links I found are in recipes the pack added or changed, plus one quest that mixes Railcraft machines with other mods' stations.[5][15][39]

The pack adds its own crafting recipe for the Creative Locomotive, shown below. It also has a matching quest in the ATM Star chapter: a quest in "?".[15][36]

Quests

The Railcraft quest chapter only asks for Railcraft items, so the cross-mod links are in the recipes above. The one exception is a quest in "?" in the tips and tricks chapter. Its task accepts either the Manual Rolling Machine or the Powered Rolling Machine. It also accepts crafting stations from several other mods.[5][39]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Railcraft Reborn?

4 parts

Most of the Railcraft Reborn quests live in one chapter called railcraft. Every quest there is untitled in the pack files, so I refer to them by quest ID. Each one is an item-collection task. Where a task lists several items joined by "or", you only need one of them.[5]

The chapter hangs off three prerequisite quests that aren't part of the Railcraft list I have, so I can't tell you what they ask for. The only quest with no prerequisite is a quest in "?", which wants a Seasons Crowbar.[5]

Machines and steam branch

This branch starts from one unlisted prerequisite quest and holds the multiblock and workshop quests.[5]

Track branch

A second unlisted prerequisite opens the rails, track parts and spike mauls. From there the quests split into three groups.[5]

  1. a quest in "?" accepts any rail type, from wooden up to electric. It unlocks the track quests: a quest in "?" (abandoned), a quest in "?" (strap iron), a quest in "?" (reinforced), a quest in "?" (high speed), a quest in "?" (electric) and a quest in "?" (high speed electric).[5]
  2. a quest in "?" asks for Track Parts and opens the track kit quests. They are a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?" and a quest in "?". Between them they cover embarking, disembarking, dumping, activator, detector, locking, gated, buffer stop, one-way, routing, coupler, whistle, transition, booster, control, throttle and launcher kits.[5]
  3. a quest in "?" asks for an iron, steel or diamond spike maul. It unlocks the points quests: a quest in "?" (junction tracks), a quest in "?" (wye tracks) and a quest in "?" (turnout tracks).[5]
  4. Once those three are done, a quest in "?" asks for the Switch Track Lever.[5]

Carts, loaders and locomotives

A third unlisted prerequisite opens the rolling-stock quests.[5]

Which Railcraft Reborn config options matter?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

The only Railcraft Reborn config file I can confirm for this pack is the client one, so everything below is about visuals and messages. These options don't change how the rails, carts or machines work.[35]

Client options in this pack

  • locomotiveLightLevel is set to 14, and the allowed range is 0 to 15. It controls how bright your locomotive is when the Dynamic Lights mod is present. Setting it to 0 turns locomotive lighting off.[35]
  • ghostTrainEnabled is set to true, so Ghost Train rendering is on. Change it to false to disable it.[35]
  • polarExpressEnabled is set to true, so Polar Express (snow) rendering is on. Change it to false to disable it.[35]
  • showBetaMessage is set to false, so the message telling you that you're on a beta version is turned off.[35]
Tip: If the Ghost Train or Polar Express effects hurt your frame rate or just aren't your thing, set the matching option to false. If you use Dynamic Lights and want dimmer locomotive light, lower the light level from 14. Setting it to 0 turns it off.[35]

Unverified The sources don't show the mod's default values, so I can't say which of these settings the pack changed. I also found no common or server config for Railcraft Reborn in the sources, so I can't confirm any gameplay options.

What changed in Railcraft Reborn between versions?

Here's what the pack's own files tell us about Railcraft Reborn's history in All the Mods 10. It's a short story, because the sources only cover a couple of points.[2][40]

  • Railcraft Reborn has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 2.2 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the mod list.[2]
  • In All the Mods 10 2.32, the pack updated Railcraft Reborn from 1.2.4 to 1.2.5.[40]
  • All the Mods 10 4.5 ships Railcraft Reborn 1.2.5, using the file railcraft-reborn-1.21.1-1.2.5.jar. That means there hasn't been a newer Railcraft Reborn version since the 2.32 update, at least as far as the 4.5 mod list shows.[2]

Unverified What actually changed inside Railcraft Reborn between 1.2.4 and 1.2.5 (new features, fixes or balance tweaks) is unverified, because no changelogs for the shipped jars are available. Check the mod's own release notes if you want the details.
