What is Railcraft Reborn?

2 parts

Railcraft Reborn is a port of the classic Railcraft mod to modern Minecraft, published with permission from the original author, CovertJaguar. This pack includes version 1.4.3. If you love building train networks and want your railroad to be a full industry, this mod is for you.[1][2]

What you get

Railcraft reworks all the rail recipes, so building a railroad becomes a whole production chain. You craft railbeds from ties and combine them with rails to make many different track types. Each type has its own abilities, such as speed, conduction, collision and explosion resistance.[1][3][4]

On the rails you get Steam, Electric and Creative Locomotives, Minecart with Tank, and the Tunnel Bore. You can also link carts together, and the Crowbar is the tool for that: shift right-click to link carts.[1][5]

A signalling system is included too. Signal boxes operate your signals, and a Signal Receiver Box can be paired with a Controller to pick which signal aspects emit redstone.[6][7]

The industrial side

Many of the mod's machines are multi-block structures that you build yourself. The Coke Oven turns Coal into Coal Coke and produces Creosote Oil as a byproduct. The Blast Furnace converts Iron Ingots into Steel Ingots.[8][9][10]

Steam is the next step. A Steam Boiler burns solid or liquid fuel to make Steam, and a Steam Turbine can turn that Steam into electrical power. A Water Tank collects water passively and can refill your Steam Locomotives.[11][12][13]

Watch out: Steam Boilers need a constant, steady water supply to the Firebox. Introducing water to a hot, dry boiler risks a massive explosion.[11]

Unverified Where Railcraft Reborn sits in this pack's progression is not confirmed by the sources. It is not on the ATM Star path, and no quests in this pack involve it.

How do you get started with Railcraft Reborn?

5 parts

Railcraft reworks all the rail recipes, so don't expect to craft a stack of vanilla rails and call it a day. You craft railbeds from ties, then combine them with rails to make tracks. Different track types have different speed, strength and cost. Here's the order I'd tackle things in.[1][4]

Start with cheap Abandoned Track

Abandoned Track needs less wood and creosote than iron tracks. That makes it a good pick when you're short on creosote or want a lot of track quickly. It can also stay suspended, which is handy for crossing a canyon.[14][15]

This is the in-pack recipe for Abandoned Track.

Watch out: Carts can derail on abandoned tracks once they go faster than 0.35 blocks per tick. If one cart in a train derails, the whole train derails. Save this track for slow or short runs.[14]

Build a Coke Oven

The Coke Oven is a hollow 3x3x3 brick structure that turns Coal into Coal Coke, or Wood into Charcoal, and gives you Creosote Oil as a byproduct. Creosote matters because track types use it, and abandoned track needs less of it than iron track. Ovens can't touch each other, so leave at least one tile between them. The conversion is slow, so if you plan to make lots of rail, build several ovens.[10][14]

The mod's advancement for this step tells you to read a coke oven brick's tooltip and build a complete oven.[16]

Grab a Crowbar

The Crowbar is the tool you'll use constantly. It removes modern rails, and right-clicking a rail adjusts it, which usually means reversing its direction. You can also give a cart a small boost by right-clicking it, and shift right-click links carts together.[5]

Set up steel production

Once your rail industry is running, you'll want steel. The Blast Furnace is a hollow 3x3x4 brick structure that converts Iron Ingots into Steel Ingots. Like the Coke Oven, it can't be built directly next to another one. Its bricks are Blast Furnace Bricks.[9][15]

Upgrade your line with track kits

Flex tracks can have Track Kits applied to give them special functions. A good first one is the Buffer Stop Track Kit, which gives you a stylish end cap that stops carts rolling off the end of your line. Carts won't bounce off or explode there.[15][16][17][18]

This is the in-pack recipe for the Buffer Stop Track Kit.

The pack also has recipes for the Booster Track Kit and the Activator Track Kit when you want to go further.[15]

Tip: Railcraft's advancement tab reads like a to-do list: regular track, track kits, coke oven, blast furnace, manual rolling machine, strap iron tracks and high speed tracks. It's worth checking as you go.[16]

How does Railcraft Reborn work?

7 parts

Railcraft Reborn's machines are mostly multi-block structures: you build a hollow shell out of the right blocks and it turns into a working machine. This section covers the shapes, what each machine does, and how steam, signals and item handling fit together.[1][8]

Multi-block machines

  • Coke Oven: a hollow 3x3x3 structure that turns Coal into Coal Coke or Wood into Charcoal, with Creosote Oil as a byproduct. It holds 64,000 units of Creosote Oil, and you can pull it out in Buckets or Glass Bottles that hold 1,000 units each. Filled Buckets don't stack, but filled Bottles do. It's a slow process, so you'll probably want several ovens if you're making a lot of rails.[10]
  • Blast Furnace: a hollow 3x3x4 structure that converts Iron Ingots into Steel Ingots.[9]
  • Rock Crusher: a 3x2x2 structure that processes various materials. It's also the machine that recycles empty Disposable Batteries.[16][19]
  • Steam Oven: a 2x2x2 structure that cooks items when you feed it Steam. It cooks up to 9 items at once in 256 ticks (12.8 seconds).[20]
  • Water Tank: a hollow 3x3x3 structure built from Water Tank Siding, much like a Coke Oven. It passively collects water and holds 400 buckets. The refill rate depends on the biome, the weather, and whether the tank can see the sky, so keep your railway out of the desert.[13]
Watch out: Coke Ovens, Blast Furnaces and Rock Crushers can't be built adjacent to each other. Leave at least one tile between two machines of the same kind.[9][10][19]

Steam Boiler

Build a Steam Boiler from the bottom up. The first layer is the Firebox, then you put a Boiler Tank on top. A Solid Fueled Firebox burns normal furnace fuels such as Charcoal or Coal Coke. A Liquid Fueled one burns Creosote Oil, Bio-Fuel or Fuel.[11]

There are three base sizes: 1×1, 2×2 and 3×3. The Firebox size limits the tank you can put on it. A 1×1 Firebox takes a single cubic meter of tank, a 2×2 takes 8 or 12, and a 3×3 takes 18, 27 or 36.[11]

Boiler Tanks come in Low Pressure and High Pressure. High Pressure makes twice the steam, but Low Pressure is generally more efficient. Larger boilers use fuel more efficiently, so you are generally better off with one big boiler than several small ones. Low Pressure is the better pick for short runs where the boiler doesn't reach maximum temperature. If you run the boiler round the clock, you get the same steam per unit of fuel either way.[11]

Watch out: Feed water to the Firebox, not the Tanks, and keep the supply constant. Adding water to a hot, dry boiler risks a massive explosion.[11]
Tip: A cold boiler can burn up to 8x more fuel than one at max heat, and bigger boilers take longer to heat up. Leave your boiler running instead of shutting it down between uses.[11]

Iron Tanks and fluid storage

Iron Tanks come in 3×3, 5×5, 7×7 and 9×9 footprints, with a height from 4 to 8 blocks. Lay down a frame of Iron Tank Wall blocks in the size you want. Then fill the top, bottom and sides with any mix of Wall, Gauge or Valve blocks.[21]

To stack tanks, place a couple of Valve blocks in the center where the tanks touch.[21]

Steam Turbine and Charge

The Steam Turbine turns Steam into power. It's built in a 2x3x2 pattern, the same as the Crusher, and it only works with a Turbine Rotor installed. In this pack it generates FE and outputs water to the bottom.[12][16]

A Rotor should last several days of constant real-time use. To repair one, combine two rotors using the vanilla repair mechanic.[12]

Railcraft also has its own Charge network, used by machines, wires, electric tracks and the Electric Locomotive. The Charge Meter measures network usage over a 5-second period. Batteries are built to work with this network. The Disposable Battery is cheap, single-use storage that comes fully charged. The Nickel-Iron Battery is general purpose, and the Nickel-Zinc Battery suits low draw and long-term storage.[16][22]

Signalling

Signals are split into Controllers and Receivers. A Block Signal pairs one-to-one with an adjacent Block Signal, detects any carts between the two, and sends the resulting aspect to a paired Receiver. You pair Block Signals with the Signal Block Surveyor: right-click one, then right-click the other. You pair a Controller with a Receiver using the Signal Tuner in the same way. The Tuner can also clear a pairing.[16][23][24]

Token Signals monitor an area instead. They pair into a net with no particular limit on the number of signals, and are recommended for junctions and diagonals. Distant Signals are mainly cosmetic and just display the aspect sent to them. The dual signals combine two functions in one block. For example, the Dual Block Signal is both a Controller and a Receiver.[16]

Signal boxes

  • Signal Receiver Box: once paired with a Controller, its GUI lets you pick which Signal Aspects emit a Redstone current. Placed next to a Controller Box, it also passes the aspect on to it.[7]
  • Signal Controller Box: placed next to a Receiver Box, it sends that aspect to a paired Receiver. Several Controller Boxes can sit next to one Receiver Box, so one Block Signal can control multiple Switch Motors or Distant Signals. With two Receivers next to it, it sends the most restrictive aspect. It can also be powered by Redstone to emit an aspect you choose in the GUI.[25]
  • Analog Signal Controller Box: emits a signal type based on the Redstone power strength it receives. For example, you can set GREEN at power 5, RED at 0 and OFF at 15.[26]
  • Signal Capacitor Box: placed next to a Receiver or Block Relay Box, it emits a Redstone pulse of adjustable length. In Rising Edge mode the timer starts as soon as the input arrives. In Falling Edge mode it starts when the last input turns off, which creates a delay.[16][27]
  • Signal Block Relay Box: pairs with up to two other Block Signals or Relays, as an end cap or an extender. As an extender it can wrap a Signal Block around corners. It can also be configured to emit Redstone and act as a Controller.[28]

Sneak and right-click with a Signal Label to name a signal or signal box. Trackman's Goggles can show the links between Controllers and Receivers. They display one aura at a time, and you change it by right-clicking or with the keybind.[16][29]

Item handling and automation

The Powered Rolling Machine can be automated by simply piping items in and out. The Manual Rolling Machine can't, but if the grid holds only enough items for one cycle, you can click the output display on either machine to force crafting.[16]

Manipulators such as the Advanced Item Loader and Advanced Item Unloader have selectable transfer and Redstone modes.[15][16]

  • Transfer mode All: moves all matching items.[16]
  • Transfer mode Transfer: moves exactly as much as is in the filter.[16]
  • Transfer mode Stock: moves items until the destination matches the filter.[16]
  • Transfer mode Excess: moves items until the source matches the filter.[16]
  • Redstone mode Immediate: processes until out of room or supply.[16]
  • Redstone mode Partial: processes until out of room or supply, but keeps pristine carts.[16]
  • Redstone mode Complete: processes until the operation is complete.[16]
  • Redstone mode Manual: never emits a Redstone signal.[16]
Tip: The Crowbar also works on Detector Blocks and Loaders. Right-clicking a Detector Block, Cart Dispenser or Advanced Loader turns it to face the side you clicked.[5]

How do you progress through Railcraft Reborn?

6 parts

Unverified The quest sources here show no quest chain for Railcraft Reborn in this pack, so there is no official quest order to follow. The order below is a suggested path built from what the in-game guides describe.

Tier 1: Tracks and your first tools

Start with tracks. Railcraft turns track building into a more immersive job: you craft railbeds from ties, then combine those railbeds with rails to make many different track types. Each rail and railbed type has its own abilities, such as speed, conduction, collision, and explosion resistance.[3][4]

The basic placeable track in this pack is Abandoned Track. There are also many abandoned variants, such as Abandoned Booster Track and Abandoned Junction Track, and track kits like the Booster Track Kit.[15]

Get a crowbar early. It removes modern rails, adjusts rails when you right-click them, and gives carts a small boost. Shift right-click links carts together. The guide says Diamond Crowbars are intended to spawn in end city chests, but the pack also has a crafting recipe for Diamond Crowbar.[5][15]

Tier 2: Coke Oven

Your first multi-block is the Coke Oven. It is a hollow 3x3x3 brick structure that turns Coal into Coal Coke, or Wood into Charcoal, and gives Creosote Oil as a byproduct. The oven holds 64,000 units of Creosote Oil, and each Bucket or Bottle holds 1,000 units.[10][15]

Tip: Coke conversion is slow, so build several ovens if you plan to make a lot of rails. Leave at least one tile between ovens, because they can't be built adjacent to each other.[10]

Tier 3: Blast Furnace and steel

Next is the Blast Furnace, a hollow 3x3x4 brick structure that converts Iron Ingots into Steel Ingots. Like the oven, it can't sit directly next to another Blast Furnace, so leave at least one tile between furnaces.[9]

Tier 4: Crusher

The Crusher is a 3x2x2 multi-block for processing various materials. The guide describes it as built from Blocks of Steel, Pistons and Diamonds, so you want steel in hand before you build one. Crushers also can't be placed adjacent to each other. Check the recipe below for the exact in-pack version.[15][19]

Tier 5: Steam, tanks and power

Steam Boilers are built with a Firebox on the bottom layer and a Boiler Tank above it. The Firebox can be Solid Fueled, burning things like Charcoal or Coal Coke, or Liquid Fueled, burning Creosote Oil, Bio-Fuel or Fuel. Base sizes are 1×1, 2×2 and 3×3. High Pressure Boiler Tanks make twice the steam, while Low Pressure ones are generally more efficient.[11]

Watch out: Keep a constant, steady water supply going into the Firebox, not the Tanks. Adding water to a hot, dry boiler risks a massive explosion.[11]

For storage, Iron Tanks come in 3×3, 5×5, 7×7 and 9×9 footprints, with heights from 4 to 8 blocks. You frame them with Iron Tank Wall blocks, such as Black Iron Tank Wall, and fill the sides, top and bottom with any mix of Wall, Gauge or Valve blocks.[15][21]

Once you have plenty of steam, the Steam Turbine turns it into electrical power. It needs a Turbine Rotor installed to run, and you can repair a rotor by combining two rotors with the vanilla repair mechanic. The Charge Meter measures Railcraft Charge in machines, wires and tracks, recording network usage over a 5-second period.[12][15][22]

Signalling

Signalling is how you control traffic on your network. The Block Signal (Block Signal) is operated through signal boxes. The Signal Receiver Box can be paired with a Controller and picks which Signal Aspects emit Redstone. The Signal Controller Box sends the Aspect from a Receiver Box to a paired Receiver. The Analog Signal Controller Box emits a signal type based on the Redstone strength it receives.[6][7][15][25][26]

Which Railcraft Reborn config options matter?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

The only Railcraft Reborn config file I can confirm for this pack is the client one, so everything below is about visuals and messages. These options don't change how the rails, carts or machines work.[30]

Client options in this pack

  • locomotiveLightLevel is set to 14, and the allowed range is 0 to 15. It controls how bright your locomotive is when the Dynamic Lights mod is present. Setting it to 0 turns locomotive lighting off.[30]
  • ghostTrainEnabled is set to true, so Ghost Train rendering is on. Change it to false to disable it.[30]
  • polarExpressEnabled is set to true, so Polar Express (snow) rendering is on. Change it to false to disable it.[30]
  • showBetaMessage is set to false, so the message telling you that you're on a beta version is turned off.[30]
Tip: If the Ghost Train or Polar Express effects hurt your frame rate or just aren't your thing, set the matching option to false. If you use Dynamic Lights and want dimmer locomotive light, lower the light level from 14. Setting it to 0 turns it off.[30]

Unverified The sources don't show the mod's default values, so I can't say which of these settings the pack changed. I also found no common or server config for Railcraft Reborn in the sources, so I can't confirm any gameplay options.

What changed in Railcraft Reborn between versions?

3 parts

All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta ships Railcraft Reborn 1.4.3, built for 26.1.2. It has been in the pack since 0.5.0-beta or earlier. The notes below come from the mod's own changelogs, which list commit titles, so some entries are short on detail.[2]

1.4.3 (the version in this pack)

  • Automation can no longer reach a machine's output and processing slots (issue 381). If a hopper or pipe setup used to pull things from the wrong slots, that is what this fixes.[31]
  • A crash when using the manual rolling machine is fixed (issue 343).[31]
  • Tank bugs are fixed (issues 303 and 189).[31]
  • Patchouli support was added back.[31]
  • Several other numbered issue fixes landed too, but the changelog only lists their issue numbers, so I can't say exactly what each one changed.[31]

1.4.2

A small release. Its only fix is for a ClassCastException.[32]

1.4.0

This release started the port to 26.1.2. The first commit for it is labelled as not yet compiling, and later commits fix compilation. The changelog also lists recipe fixes, trade data generation, updated dependencies and new Crowdin translations.[33]

It also merged community pull requests, including ones titled for turbine durability and buffer stop tags. The changelog is cut off, so this isn't the full list, and the titles don't say exactly what changed.[33]
