What is Industrial Foregoing: Souls?

1 part

Industrial Foregoing: Souls is a small add-on mod with one big idea: you harvest souls from Wardens and spend them to make your machines run faster. This pack ships version 1.10.4.[1][2]

The loop is short. You extract souls from a Warden using a Soul Laser Base fitted with a Blue Lens, which means you first need a way to hold the Warden still, so a Stasis Chamber is your friend here. The mod also adds a way to get more Echo Shards, since they are used heavily throughout its recipes.[1]

Watch out: The Soul Laser Base does nothing without a lens installed, so don't forget to add the Blue Lens before you wonder why no souls are showing up.[1]

Once souls are stored, you place a Soul Surge pointing at the block you want sped up and connect it back to the Soul Laser Base with Soul Pipes. Applying a redstone signal to the Soul Surge stops it, so you can gate acceleration however you like.[1]

Who it's for

This is a mid-to-late game throughput mod rather than a progression gate. If you already have machines you want running four times faster, and you're comfortable dealing with a Warden, it slots in nicely as an upgrade layer on top of your existing setups.[1]

  • By default each soul lasts 15 seconds and makes the target machine 4 times faster.[1]
  • Blocks can be excluded from acceleration by adding them to the block tag industrialforegoingsouls:cant_accelerate.[1]

Unverified The numbers above are the mod's own defaults; whether this pack tweaks the Soul Laser Base or Soul Surge config values has not been confirmed from the pack files.

How do you get started with Industrial Foregoing: Souls?

3 parts

Industrial Foregoing: Souls is a small add-on with one big idea: you pull souls out of a Warden and spend them to speed up your other machines. The whole setup comes down to three items, and in this pack you craft all of them in the Dissolution Chamber from Industrial Foregoing.[1][3]

The three items you need

The pack adds its own Dissolution Chamber recipe for each item below. The recipe blocks show exactly what the pack asks for, so gather the parts from there.[3]

  1. Start with the Soul Surge. This is the block that does the speeding up. You place it pointing at the machine you want to accelerate.[1]
  2. Next, make some Soul Pipe. These Soul Pipes connect the Soul Surge to the Soul Laser Base.[1]
  3. Finally, build the Soul Laser Base. This is the block that extracts souls from a Warden, and it needs a Blue Lens to do it.[1]

Putting it together

Once you have some souls stored, place the Soul Surge pointing at the block you want to speed up and connect it to the Soul Laser Base with Soul Pipes. Applying a redstone signal to the Soul Surge stops it from working, which is handy when you don't want to burn through souls.[1]

Watch out: Don't forget the lens. The Soul Laser Base needs a Blue Lens to extract souls from a Warden. The mod's page also points to the Stasis Chamber as the helpful machine for this job.[1]

What to expect from the souls

The mod's own default is that each soul lasts 15 seconds and makes the machine 4 times faster. Those values can be changed in the mod's config.[1]

If there is a block you never want accelerated, add it to the block tag industrialforegoingsouls:cant_accelerate. The mod also adds a way to get more Echo Shards, which is useful because the Soul Surge and Soul Pipe recipes in this pack both call for them.[1][3]

How does Industrial Foregoing: Souls work?

4 parts

Industrial Foregoing: Souls is a small add-on with one idea: you pull souls out of a Warden and spend them to speed up other blocks. The whole system is three parts, a Soul Laser Base that produces and stores souls, Soul Pipe pieces that carry them, and a Soul Surge that applies the speed boost.[1]

Getting souls from a Warden

You extract souls by pointing a Soul Laser Base at a Warden. It needs a Blue Lens to work, so don't forget to add a lens. The mod's page also suggests the Stasis Chamber for holding the Warden.[1]

Each finished operation generates souls and hurts the Warden. This pack tunes those numbers, so they differ from the mod's defaults:[4]

Watch out: Because the pack has KILL_WARDEN enabled and sets the damage per operation to 12 (the mod default is 4), the Warden on your laser is killed when its life gets near 0. Plan on replacing it when you work out your soul supply.[4]

Moving souls: Soul Pipes

Once the base has souls stored, you connect it to a Soul Surge using Soul Pipes. Each pipe can hold 4 souls, set by IFSoulsMachines.SOUL_AMOUNT_PER_PIPE, which is the same as the mod default.[1][4]

Speeding things up: the Soul Surge

Place the Soul Surge so it points at the block you want to accelerate, then link it to the Soul Laser Base with pipes. If you ever want it to stop, apply a redstone signal to the Surge.[1]

By default each soul lasts 15 seconds and makes the target 4 times faster. In this pack a soul lasts for 200 ticks, because IFSoulsMachines.ConfigSoulSurge.SOUL_TIME is lowered from the mod default of 300.[1][4]

The Surge boosts three kinds of targets, and the pack leaves each of these at 4 extra ticks, the same as the default:[4]

For random-tick blocks, the chance of a tick being accelerated is set by IFSoulsMachines.ConfigSoulSurge.RANDOM_TICK_ACCELERATION_CHANCE. The pack lowers it to 0.025 from the mod default of 0.03.[4]

Tip: If there is a block you do not want boosted, add it to the block tag industrialforegoingsouls:cant_accelerate to prevent it from being accelerated.[1]

Crafting the parts

In this pack the Soul Laser Base, the Soul Pipe and the Soul Surge are all made in the Dissolution Chamber with recipes the pack added, so they are not the mod's own recipes. Here is the Soul Laser Base:[3]

How do you progress through Industrial Foregoing: Souls?

2 parts

This mod does not have a long tier ladder in this pack. What the sources show are the Soul Pipe, the Soul Surge and the Soul Laser Base, and each one is crafted in Industrial Foregoing's Dissolution Chamber. The pack added all of these recipes itself, so they are the pack's own and not the mod's defaults.[3]

The recipes, ordered by machine frame

The Soul Pipe is made with Pink Slime from Industrial Foregoing, so that fluid has to be part of your setup first.[3]

The Soul Surge calls for a simple-tier Industrial Foregoing machine frame.[3]

The Soul Laser Base calls for a supreme-tier machine frame, so you need to have progressed through Industrial Foregoing's frame tiers before you can craft it.[3]

Tip: Use the recipe blocks above for the exact ingredient lists. These are the pack's recipes, so do not rely on what the mod uses by default.[3]

Quests

Unverified The sources here do not show any quest chapter that covers this mod, so there is no quest-guided path I can point you to. The order above is based only on the machine frame tier each recipe asks for.

How does Industrial Foregoing: Souls work with other mods?

2 parts

In this pack, Industrial Foregoing: Souls connects to other mods through crafting. The pack adds its own Dissolution Chamber recipes for the Soul Laser Base, the Soul Pipe and the Soul Surge, and those recipes pull in items from other mods.[3]

Dissolution Chamber recipes added by the pack

The Dissolution Chamber is an Industrial Foregoing machine. The Soul Laser Base, the Soul Pipe and the Soul Surge are all crafted there, so you will be using it a lot.[3]

  • Soul Laser Base: this is the block that extracts souls from a Warden. Its pack recipe uses a Unstable Portal Fluid Source, vanilla sculk blocks and a supreme Industrial Foregoing machine frame.[1][3]
  • Soul Pipe: the pipes that link the laser base to the surge. Its pack recipe, shown below, includes Industrial Foregoing's Pink Slime.[1][3]
  • Soul Surge: the block that accelerates the machine it points at. Its pack recipe uses a simple Industrial Foregoing machine frame, so it asks for a lower frame tier than the laser base.[1][3]

What ties these recipes together

Plastics are part of every one of these recipes, and the Soul Laser Base and the Soul Surge both use the Unstable Portal Fluid Source and the Sculk Shrieker. The Soul Laser Base also uses a Sculk Catalyst.[3]

Tip: Echo Shard is used in the Soul Pipe and Soul Surge recipes. The mod itself adds a way to get more Echo Shards because it uses so many, so it is worth setting that up early.[1][3]

Which Industrial Foregoing: Souls config options matter?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Industrial Foregoing: Souls has two groups of options: the Soul Laser Base, which pulls souls out of a Warden, and the Soul Surge, which spends those souls to speed up machines. This pack changed most of the laser settings and two of the surge settings. Everything below comes from the pack's machines config file.[1][5]

Soul Laser Base: what the pack changed

Watch out: IFSoulsMachines.ConfigSoulLaserBase.KILL_WARDEN is true in this pack, so the Warden is killed when its life gets near 0 instead of being kept alive. Combined with the higher damage per operation, plan for the Warden to die sooner than the mod's own defaults would suggest.[5]

Soul Surge: shorter souls, slightly fewer random ticks

Left at the mod default

The acceleration strength is unchanged at 4 extra ticks for each target type: IFSoulsMachines.ConfigSoulSurge.ACCELERATION_TICK for tile entities, IFSoulsMachines.ConfigSoulSurge.BLOCK_ACCELERATION_TICK for blocks and IFSoulsMachines.ConfigSoulSurge.ENTITIES_ACCELERATION_TICK for mobs. IFSoulsMachines.SOUL_AMOUNT_PER_PIPE is also still 4, so each Soul Pipe holds 4 souls.[5]

Tip: Since the surge strength is unchanged, the pack's tuning is mostly about how many souls you get, how fast the laser works, and how long each soul lasts. Plan your soul supply around the 200-tick soul time rather than the longer default.[5]

Unverified The mod's project page lists a default of false for the Warden-kill option, but the pack's config file does not mark that option as changed, so whether the pack actually differs from the mod default there is unconfirmed.

What changed in Industrial Foregoing: Souls between versions?

The sources I have only cover a couple of moments in this mod's life in the pack, so this section is short. Industrial Foregoing: Souls has been in All the Mods 10 since version 2.2 or earlier, and All the Mods 10 4.12 ships version 1.10.4 of it.[2]

  • All the Mods 10 2.32: the mod was updated from 1.10.3 to 1.10.4.[6]
  • All the Mods 10 4.12: still on 1.10.4, using the file industrial-foregoing-souls-1.21.1-1.10.4.jar.[2]

Unverified What actually changed between 1.10.3 and 1.10.4 (new features, fixes or balance tweaks) is unverified, because no changelog for the shipped jars is stored. Changes in other pack releases are not covered by the sources either.
