What is FTB Quests?

FTB Quests is included in this pack as version 2101.1.27, using the NeoForge build of the mod. It has been part of the pack since pack version 2.25 or earlier, so it's been around for most of the pack's life.[1]

Unverified The available sources don't describe what FTB Quests does, who it's aimed at, or how it fits into this pack's progression, so those details are left out until they can be confirmed.

How do you get started with FTB Quests?

3 parts

Getting set up with FTB Quests takes only a few cheap crafts, and every one uses basic early-game materials. The pack uses the mod's own recipes for all of these items, so what you see below is exactly what you'll craft in your world.[2]

Step 1: The Quest Book

Your first craft should be the Quest Book. It's a quick shapeless recipe you can make right after punching your first trees and grabbing some stone, so there's no reason to wait.[2]

Unverified The sources don't describe what the Quest Book does when used. It is commonly used to open the quests screen, but this pack's data doesn't confirm that.

Step 2: The Loot Crate Opener

Next up is the Loot Crate Opener. It's another cheap early craft, so you can grab it as soon as you have the materials.[2]

Unverified The sources don't explain how the Loot Crate Opener works or whether this pack hands out any loot crates.

Step 3: Task Screens (optional)

Task screens are a nice extra once you're settled in. Start with the Task Screen (1x1), because it's the base of the whole set. Every larger screen and the configurator are crafted from it.[2]

From there, work your way up in order: Task Screen (3x3), then Task Screen (5x5), then Task Screen (7x7). Each bigger size is built from the smaller ones, so you can't skip ahead.[2]

To round out the set, craft the Task Screen Configurator. It also uses the smallest screen, so make an extra one if you plan to build it.[2]

Unverified The sources don't describe what task screens display or how the Task Screen Configurator changes them.

Tip: If you're worried about missing quest completions, check your notification settings. The mod warns that the 'Action Bar' and 'None' completion styles may cause completion notices to be missed, and a separate option controls whether sounds play when a task, quest or chapter is completed.[3]

How does FTB Quests work?

4 parts

Your starting point is the Quest Book, which opens the quest screen. This pack uses the mod's own shapeless recipe for it, so the pack hasn't changed it.[2]

How quests unlock

Quests are linked by dependencies, and the quest file uses one of two progression modes. In Linear mode, a quest must be complete before any quest that depends on it can be started. In Flexible mode, you can make progress on tasks in a dependent quest at any time, but you can't complete that quest until its dependency is done.[3]

Unverified There are no config files for this mod in the pack's sources, so which progression mode this pack's quest file uses is unverified.

Not every dependency chain is a straight line. A quest can be set up as an OR quest, where it unlocks once a certain number of its dependencies are done instead of all of them. A quest can also cap how many of the quests it unlocks can be completed. That creates exclusive branches: once you finish one path, the other branches become unavailable.[3]

Individual quests can bend these rules. Some let you start their tasks before the dependencies are complete. Others require their tasks to be done in the exact order they were added, so check the quest carefully if a task isn't ticking off.[3]

Some quests hide things from you on purpose. A quest can stay completely invisible until you complete it, which is great for easter egg quests. It can also become visible after you finish a set number of its tasks. Other quests can hide their text and tasks until you're able to start them, or show their description text only after you've finished them.[3]

How item tasks detect your items

Item tasks watch your inventory. When your inventory changes, the mod checks it again, with a minimum delay in ticks between checks. Higher delays are kinder on server TPS, but you'll wait longer before the auto-completion message pops up, so a short pause after picking something up is normal.[3]

Each item task has a component matching mode. None ignores item component data entirely. Fuzzy only checks the data components present on the task's filter item. Strict requires the filter item's components to match your item exactly. If you're holding the right item and the task won't complete, a Strict match is a likely reason.[3]

The mod also has a quest chest block with two sides: you place items in its input to complete quests, and rewards appear in its output.[3]

Task Screens and automation

Task Screens are how you hook quests up to your automation. Items can be piped into a Task Screen to submit them to a task. A quest can even set an item task so that it only accepts items piped into a Task Screen, which only applies when that task consumes the items. That makes Task Screens the way to handle big bulk deliveries without hand-feeding them.[3]

The screens come in four sizes: Task Screen (1x1), Task Screen (3x3), Task Screen (5x5) and Task Screen (7x7). The small screen is the base: each bigger screen is crafted from the smaller ones. This pack uses the mod's own recipes for all of them.[2]

Rewards

Rewards can work for a single player or for a team. When a reward is marked as a team reward, the whole team gets one copy and only the player who submits receives it. Otherwise, every online team member gets the reward.[3]

  • Some item rewards are set to give nothing if you already have that item in your inventory, and this check ignores NBT.[3]
  • Some rewards are skipped when you press the Claim All button, so you have to claim them by hand. Loot, Random and Choice rewards can't use this setting.[3]
  • Repeatable quests can have a cooldown, measured in seconds, between claiming all their rewards and being able to do the tasks again.[3]
  • Rewards can also come as loot crates, which are set up through reward tables.[3]

There's also a Loot Crate Opener, which uses the mod's own recipe in this pack.[2]

Tip: In the quest screen, the scroll wheel scrolls up and down by default. Hold Shift to pan and Ctrl to zoom. There's also an option to make Backspace reopen the quest you viewed before.[3]
Watch out: If you set completion notifications to Action Bar or None, you may miss notices when tasks, quests or chapters complete.[3]

How do you progress through FTB Quests?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

The sources I have for FTB Quests in this pack show one real progression chain: the Task Screen sizes, from the smallest screen to the largest. Every other FTB Quests item here has its own single recipe.[4]

Quest Book and Loot Crate Opener

The Quest Book has its own crafting recipe in the pack.[4]

Task Screen sizes

Task Screens come in the sizes Task Screen (1x1), Task Screen (3x3), Task Screen (5x5) and Task Screen (7x7). Each larger size is crafted from the smaller screens, so you work up through them in order.[4]

The 5x5 screen uses both the 1x1 and 3x3 screens.

The 7x7 screen is the largest and uses the 1x1, 3x3 and 5x5 screens.

Configuring screens

The Task Screen Configurator is made from a 1x1 screen, so you can craft it once you have your first screen.[4]
