What is FTB Quests?

This pack ships with FTB Quests version 2101.1.2, in the NeoForge build ftb-quests-neoforge-2101.1.2.jar.[1]

It isn't a new addition. The mod has been in the pack since version 0.49 or earlier, so it has been around for a good while.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't describe what FTB Quests does, who it is aimed at, or where it fits in the pack's progression, including any ATM Star path. I'm leaving those details out rather than guessing. There is also no confirmed list of quests or recipes tied to this mod in this pack.

How do you get started with FTB Quests?

4 parts

The crafting recipes in this pack show a clear order for FTB Quests items. Start with the book, then the Task Screen, then the bigger screens and extras. Each step below links to the exact in-pack recipe.[2]

Quest Book

First up is the Quest Book. This is the mod's own recipe, and the sources don't show the pack changing it.[2]

Task Screen (1x1)

Next, make a Task Screen (1x1). The pack adds its own recipe for it, and the mod's own recipe is also in the recipe dump. Both are shown below.[2]

This is the mod's own recipe for the same screen.

The screen is worth having early because it is the one block everything else here builds on. Item tasks can also be set so that items may only be submitted by piping them into a Task Screen. That setting only applies when the task consumes items.[2][3]

Bigger screens

Once you have a 1x1 screen, you can move up to the larger sizes. Each bigger screen is crafted from the smaller screens, so the order matters. The pack also adds its own recipe for the Task Screen (3x3), next to the mod's.[2]

After that come the Task Screen (5x5) and the Task Screen (7x7). I'd hold off on these until you actually need the extra size.[2]

Configurator and Loot Crate Opener

The Task Screen Configurator is crafted from a 1x1 screen, so it comes after the Task Screen step.[2]

The Loot Crate Opener is separate from the screens, so you can make it whenever you like.[2]

How does FTB Quests work?

5 parts

The sources for this mod describe quest systems rather than machines, power or fluids: how quests unlock, how tasks detect progress, and how items get into quests automatically. The block-based item automation they cover is the Task Screen, so we'll start there.[2][3]

Task Screens and item automation

Task Screens come in the sizes Task Screen (1x1) (1x1), Task Screen (3x3) (3x3), Task Screen (5x5) (5x5) and Task Screen (7x7) (7x7). Item tasks can be fed by piping items into a Task Screen, which is how you automate them.[2][3]

An item task has a Task Screen Only setting. When it's true, items may only be submitted by piping into a Task Screen. It only applies when Consume Items is also true for that task.[3]

To link a screen to your setup, use the Task Screen Configurator. Sneak and right-click a Task Screen block to bind it.[2][3]

The recipe dump also lists the mod's own recipes for the 1x1 and 3x3 screens alongside the pack's versions. The larger screens and the configurator only show mod recipes.[2]

The language file also has tooltips for an input chest and an output chest. The input one says to place items there to complete quests, and the output one says rewards will appear there. The sources don't give the block ids or recipes for these, so they aren't covered here.[3]

Progression and dependencies

The file-level progression mode decides how quests unlock. In Linear mode, a quest must be complete before the quests that depend on it are started. In Flexible mode, you can progress tasks in dependent quests at any time, but you can't complete them until the dependency is complete.[3]

  • Min Required Dependencies: set this above 0 and the quest becomes an OR quest, where only that many dependencies are needed to unlock it. The separate dependency requirement setting is ignored in that case.[3]
  • Tasks Ignore Dependencies: lets you start a quest's tasks without completing its dependencies.[3]
  • Require Sequential Tasks: tasks must be completed in the strict order they were added to the quest. A quest can use its chapter's setting by leaving this on Default.[3]
  • Show Lock Icon: puts a padlock on quests that can't be started yet because of dependency restrictions.[3]

Visibility options

  • Invisible: the quest is hidden from players until it's completed, which suits optional easter-egg quests. If you also set the invisible-until-tasks option above 0, the quest appears once that many tasks are complete.[3]
  • Hide Details Until Startable: quest text and tasks can't be viewed until the quest can be started.[3]
  • Hide Text Until Complete: you can open the quest, but no description text shows until it's completed.[3]

Detection, matching and rewards

The detection delay is the minimum interval, in ticks, between checks of a player's inventory when it changes. Higher values are kinder to server TPS, especially if inventories change often, but auto-completion messages arrive later.[3]

Item tasks have a match-components setting. None ignores item component data. Fuzzy only checks the data components present in the filter stack. Strict requires the filter stack's data components to match the checked item exactly.[3]

The command '/ftbquests block_rewards' can block rewards for a team, and a quest can be set to ignore that block and still offer its rewards. Rewards can be excluded from the Claim All button, except Loot, Random and Choice rewards, where that setting can't be changed. An item reward can be set to skip giving the item if you already have it, and this check ignores NBT.[3]

Command rewards support vanilla substitutions like @p, plus {x}, {y}, {z}, {quest}, {chapter} and {team}. They can optionally run as if the player had permission level 2.[3]

Handy items

The Quest Book opens the quest window when you right-click it. Sneak and right-click a loot crate to open every crate in your hand at once. The Loot Crate Opener also has a recipe in the pack.[2][3]

Unverified The sources here include no config files for this mod and no guidebook, so the pack's actual values for the progression mode, detection delay and emergency item cooldown are not shown. The cooldown tooltip only says it controls how long emergency items take to respawn.

How do you progress through FTB Quests?

2 parts

The only step-by-step progression the sources show for FTB Quests is the Task Screen line, which grows from 1x1 to 3x3, 5x5 and finally 7x7. Everything else the mod adds here is a one-off craft.[2]

Task Screen tiers

The first step is the Task Screen (1x1). The pack adds its own shaped recipe for it, so follow this one in this pack rather than the mod's own recipe.[2]

Recipe id: allthemods:ftbquests/screem_1

This recipe is added by the pack for the 1x1 screen.

Next is the Task Screen (3x3). The pack also adds a recipe for this one, and it is made from the 1x1 screen.[2]

Crafting Shaped

9 × Task Screen (1x1)

Recipe id: allthemods:ftbquests/screen_3

This recipe is added by the pack for the 3x3 screen.

The biggest sizes use the mod's own recipes. The Task Screen (5x5) is built from the smaller screens, and the Task Screen (7x7) is built from those and the 5x5 screen, so you craft your way up the sizes in order.[2]

Unverified Whether any quests in this pack's quest book involve this mod, or where it sits on the main quest path, is told in the quest book's own chapters, and the sources here do not show it. Treat the screen order above as a crafting order, not a quest order.
