What is FTB Quests?

FTB Quests is part of the pack, and this pack ships version 2101.1.1 of it, in the file ftb-quests-neoforge-2101.1.1.jar.[1]

It's not a newcomer to the pack, either. It was already included as of version 0.48 or earlier, so it has been around for a long time.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't describe what FTB Quests does in this pack, who it is aimed at, or where it fits in the progression. They also don't say whether it is on the ATM Star path or whether any quests in the pack use it, so I'm not making claims about any of that.

How do you get started with FTB Quests?

3 parts

The first thing worth making with FTB Quests in this pack is a Task Screen. Item tasks can be set so that items may only be submitted by piping them into a Task Screen, so a screen is how you hand those items in.[2]

Step 1: Make a Task Screen (1x1)

The Task Screen (1x1) is the basic screen. The pack adds its own crafting recipe for it, so use the recipe below.[3]

Step 2: Upgrade to the Task Screen (3x3)

Once you have a 1x1 screen, you can turn it into the bigger Task Screen (3x3). The pack adds this recipe too.[3]

This shaped recipe is added by the pack and starts from the 1x1 screen.

Why a Task Screen?

The screen-only rule applies only when the task is set to consume items. If a quest asks for items and won't accept them any other way, build a screen and pipe them in.[2]

Tip: Quest progression depends on the progression mode. In Linear mode, a quest must be complete before the quests that depend on it can start. In Flexible mode, you can progress tasks in dependent quests at any time, but you can't complete them until their dependency is done.[2]

How does FTB Quests work?

5 parts

The sources for FTB Quests describe no machines, power, fluids or multiblocks. The closest thing to automation is the Task Screen, which lets you pipe items into a quest. Below is what the sources confirm.[2]

Task Screens and item automation

The Task Screen comes in two sizes, Task Screen (1x1) and Task Screen (3x3). An item task can be set so that items may only be submitted by piping them into a Task Screen. That option only applies when Consume Items is turned on for the task, so it's the one to check if your pipes aren't delivering.[2][3]

Both Task Screen recipes are added by the pack, so don't rely on what you remember from other modpacks. Here they are:[3]

To link a screen to a quest, use the Task Screen Configurator. Sneak and right-click a Task Screen block with it to bind it.[2]

The mod also has a chest block. Its in-game descriptions say to place items in it to complete quests, and that rewards will appear in it.[2]

How item tasks are checked

Item tasks have a match setting for item component data, with three modes. None ignores component data. Fuzzy only checks the data components present in the filter stack. Strict requires the filter stack's components to match the checked item exactly.[2]

The mod checks a player's inventory when it changes, but only after a minimum interval measured in ticks. A higher value is kinder on server TPS, especially if inventories change often, but it means quest auto-completion messages arrive later.[2]

Quest order and unlocking

The file's progression mode decides how dependencies behave. In Linear mode, a quest must be complete before the quests that depend on it can start. In Flexible mode, you can progress tasks in dependent quests at any time, but those quests can't be completed until their dependency is.[2]

  • Min Required Dependencies: set it above 0 and the quest becomes an OR quest, which unlocks once only that many of its dependencies are done. The dependency requirement setting is ignored in that case.[2]
  • Require Sequential Tasks: when true, tasks must be completed in the strict order they were added to the quest. Leaving it on Default uses the chapter's setting.[2]
  • Tasks Ignore Dependencies: lets you start a quest's tasks without completing its dependencies.[2]

Visibility options

  • Hide details until startable: the quest's text and tasks can't be viewed until the quest can be started.[2]
  • Hide text until complete: the quest can be opened, but its description stays hidden until it's completed.[2]
  • Invisible: the quest is hidden from players until completed, which suits optional easter-egg quests. If you also set the invisible-until-tasks option above 0, the quest becomes visible once that many tasks are done.[2]

Rewards

  • Claim All: a reward can be excluded from the Claim All button. That setting can't be changed for Loot, Random and Choice reward types.[2]
  • Blocked rewards: the /ftbquests block_rewards command can block rewards for a team. A quest can be set to offer its rewards anyway.[2]
  • Item rewards: the only-one option skips the reward if your inventory already holds that item, and it ignores NBT.[2]
  • Command rewards: they support vanilla substitutions such as @p, plus {x}, {y}, {z}, {quest}, {chapter} and {team}. An elevate option runs the command as if the player had permission level 2.[2]
  • Loot crates: sneak and right-click one to open all the crates in your hand.[2]
Tip: Want a chapter to open on a particular quest? Set the chapter's autofocus ID to a Quest or Quest Link ID, and the view will center on that quest when the chapter opens. Use Copy Quest ID to get the ID.[2]

How do you progress through FTB Quests?

2 parts

FTB Quests doesn't have tiers in the way a tech or magic mod does. In this pack the only progression I can confirm from the sources is the upgrade path for the task screens: you start with the Task Screen (1x1) and then step up to the Task Screen (3x3).[3]

Step 1: the 1x1 Task Screen

The pack adds its own shaped crafting recipe for the Task Screen (1x1). This is the entry point, so craft this one first.[3]

Step 2: the 3x3 Task Screen

The pack also adds a shaped recipe that turns the 1x1 screen into the larger Task Screen (3x3). You need to make the smaller screen before you can make this one.[3]

Unverified The sources I was given don't describe any quests that involve this mod, or any place for it on the main quest path, so I can't say that the pack gates the screens behind a quest or a particular progression stage.
