What is Crystalix?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Crystalix is a building and decoration mod that adds colored glass blocks with a lot of different functions. The pack includes version 3.0.0. It's a great pick if you like detailed builds, or if you want glass that does more than look pretty.[1][2]

Since version 2.3.0 there are only 3 kinds of glass, and you can apply any color to any of them. That gives you a huge number of color combinations without a crowded creative menu.[1]

The Crystalix Wand

The wand is how you customize your glass. You hold V by default to open a config window, then cycle through the properties to set them on a block. Left clicking or scrolling down cycles forwards, and right clicking or scrolling up cycles backwards.[1]

  • Crouch to edit all connecting blocks at once.[1]
  • Hold CTRL to apply properties without changing the color.[1]
  • Press X to copy the properties from the block you're currently targeting onto the wand.[1]

What the properties can do

Properties can be mixed however you like. You can make a block invisible, fully transparent with only a few colored specks, waterloggable, or shadeless. You can also make it emit a redstone signal of 15, or let it conduct redstone like a solid block.[1]

Reinforced blocks are indestructible to everything, including the wither and the ender dragon, except for a player mining them. Mining them is also 10x harder. The Ghost property lets chosen groups pass through the block, such as only players or only hostile mobs. The Light property can make a block glow at light level 15, block light like tinted glass, or glow at 15 while still allowing mob spawns.[1]

Unverified Where Crystalix fits in this pack's progression is unconfirmed. The available sources show no quests for it and no place on the ATM Star path, so treat it as an optional building and decoration mod.

How do you get started with Crystalix?

4 parts

Crystalix adds colored glass blocks with many different functions. The basic loop is simple: craft some glass, craft the wand, then use the wand to change the color and special properties of the glass you've placed.[1]

Craft your first glass

There are only 3 kinds of glass: Crystalix Glass, Clear Crystalix Glass and Bordered Crystalix Glass. You can apply any color to any of them, so pick the look you like and don't worry about color yet.[1][3]

Craft the Crystalix Wand

The Crystalix Wand is what makes the mod work, because it's how you set a block's properties and color. Its recipe calls for one of the mod's blocks, so craft at least one piece of glass before you make it.[1][3]

Learn the wand controls

  • Left clicking or scrolling down cycles forward through the options, and right clicking or scrolling up cycles backward.[1]
  • Holding V opens the config window by default.[1]
  • Crouching lets you edit all connecting blocks at once, which is handy for big windows.[1]
  • Holding CTRL applies only the properties and leaves the color alone.[1]
  • Pressing X copies the properties from the block you're currently targeting onto the wand.[1]

Try out some properties

You can mix and match properties however you want. Here are a few worth trying first:[1]

  • Color opens a color picker so you can choose any color for your glass.[1][4]
  • Light can make the block glow at light level 15, block light like tinted glass, or use Fake Light, which glows at 15 but still lets mobs spawn.[1]
  • Redstone makes the block emit a redstone signal of 15, and Conductor lets redstone pass through it like a solid block.[1][4]
  • Ghost lets certain things walk through the block, such as only players, only hostile mobs or everything.[1]
  • Invisible stops the block from rendering at all, which is useful if you want the properties of the glass without having a visual block there.[1][4]
  • Reinforced makes the block indestructible to everything, including the wither and the ender dragon, except for the player mining it. It also makes the block 10x harder to mine.[1]
Tip: Invisible glass with Light set to glow is a neat way to light up a room without any visible light source.[1]

How does Crystalix work?

8 parts

Crystalix works a bit differently from most tech mods. Instead of machines, the whole mod is built around colored glass blocks with many different functions. You place the glass and then use the Crystalix Wand to set exactly how each block looks and behaves. Once you understand the wand and the property system, you understand the mod.[1]

The three glass types

Since version 2.3.0 there are only 3 different versions of glass: Crystalix Glass, Clear Crystalix Glass and Bordered Crystalix Glass. You can apply any color to any type of glass, so the number of possible combinations is basically endless. In this pack all three use the mod's own crafting recipes.[1][3]

The Crystalix Wand

The wand is your one tool for everything in this mod. It cycles through all the possible properties, and a config window lets you set the property you want to apply to a block. In this pack the wand also uses the mod's own crafting recipe.[1][3]

  • Left click or scroll down to cycle forward through the options.[1][4]
  • Right click or scroll up to cycle backward.[1][4]
  • Hold V to open the config window. That is the default key, so check your controls if it doesn't work.[1]
  • Crouch while using the wand to edit all connecting blocks at once, which is perfect for big windows and walls.[1]
  • Hold CTRL to apply only the properties and leave the block's color alone.[1][4]
  • Press X to copy the properties from the block you are looking at onto the wand, so you can match an existing build quickly.[1]

How properties work

Properties are the heart of Crystalix. You can mix and match them however you want on a single block, so one pane of glass can be colored, glowing, waterlogged and walk-through all at the same time.[1]

Looks and rendering

  • Color opens a color picker screen where you can choose any color you like for the glass.[1][4]
  • Transparent makes the glass texture fully transparent, so the color only shows on the few specks on the glass.[1][4]
  • Invisibility stops the block from being rendered at all. This is handy when you want the glass's properties without a visible block in the way.[1][4]
  • Shadeless removes the shadows and shade from the block.[1][4]

Light

The Light property cycles through four modes. None has no special effect. Light makes the block glow at a light level of 15. Dark blocks light the same way tinted glass does. Fake Light also glows at a light level of 15 but still lets mobs spawn, so keep that one in mind if you are building a mob farm or lighting a base.[1][4]

Watch out: Fake Light does not make an area safe. Mobs can still spawn next to it even though it glows at level 15, so use the normal Light mode if you want spawn-proof lighting.[1]

Redstone

  • Redstone makes the block emit a redstone signal of 15, so the glass works as a power source.[1][4]
  • Conductor makes the block conduct redstone through it like a solid block, which normal glass can't do.[1][4]

Ghost: walk-through glass

Ghost controls what can pass through the block. You can choose one of these modes: nothing, everything, only players, everything except players, only hostile mobs, everything except hostile mobs, only passive mobs, or everything except passive mobs. This makes it easy to build doors only you can walk through, or walls that keep mobs in or out.[1][4]

Durability and water

  • Reinforced makes the block completely indestructible to everything, including the wither and the ender dragon. Only a player mining it can remove it, and it takes 10x longer to mine.[1][4]
  • Waterloggable sets whether you can place water in the same block as the glass.[1][4]
Tip: Set up a block exactly how you want it, then press X while looking at it to copy its properties onto the wand. Crouch while applying them to update a whole connected build in one go.[1]

How do you progress through Crystalix?

2 parts

Crystalix doesn't have a long tiered progression in this pack. It has four craftable items: three decorative glass blocks and a wand. All four use shaped crafting table recipes, so you can make everything as soon as you've gathered the materials. None of them need a machine or special station.[3]

These are the mod's own recipes, and the pack doesn't change any of them. Whatever you've seen in other setups using the default Crystalix recipes should work the same here.[3]

The glass blocks

The three glass variants sit side by side rather than one after another. You don't need one to unlock the next, so craft whichever look suits your build. Each one takes a regular glass block and upgrades it with a different extra material. That means they're all early-game friendly.[3]

The Crystalix Wand

The Crystalix Wand is the closest thing this mod has to a top tier. Its recipe asks for more than the glass does, including one of the mod's own blocks. Plan to craft it after you've got the rest of the materials together.[3]

Unverified The sources don't confirm which blocks count as Crystalix blocks for the wand recipe, or what the wand does once you've made it. Which All the Mods 10 quests use Crystalix?

3 parts

Crystalix has a single quest, and it sits in the "Building Tips" chapter. That chapter is the pack's building and decoration guide, so the quest is about glass for your builds.[5]

The path to the Crystalix quest

  1. "Building Tips!" quest is the start of the chapter.[5]
  2. "Blocks!" quest comes after it and asks you to get any block.[5]
  3. a quest in "Building Tips" comes after Blocks! and asks for Glass. It says the vanilla glass is nice, but you can do much better.[5]
  4. "Crystalix" quest comes after the glass quest. It is the Crystalix quest.[5]

The Crystalix quest is an item task. The quest book source doesn't say which item it checks for, so I'm not going to guess.[5]

What the quest tells you about Crystalix

The quest text says Crystalix gives you glass in many different types. There are three styles: Normal, Clear and Bordered. Bordered is the usual Minecraft glass pattern, with borders and pixels near the corners. Clear keeps the borders but drops the corner pixels. Normal has no borders or pixels, so it is completely clear and a single color.[5]

Each Crystalix glass also has its own properties, which the quest names as Shadeless, Reinforced, Light and Ghost. Here is what the quest says each one does:[5]

  • Shadeless changes how the glass reacts to shaders and to Minecraft lighting.[5]
  • Reinforced changes its blast resistance.[5]
  • Light decides whether it gives off light, ignores light, or acts like normal glass and lets light in.[5]
  • Ghost changes who can walk through the glass. The quest says this one has the most settings.[5]

Other glass quests nearby

Crystalix isn't the only quest that follows the glass quest. These other glass quests come after it too: "Macaw's Windows" quest, "Chipped Glass" quest, "Glassential" quest, "XyCraft Glass" quest, "Railcraft Glass" quest and a quest in "Building Tips". They are all in the same chapter, so you can work through them in whatever order you like.[5]

What each update changed is unverified, including what came with the move to 2.x in pack 4.15 and the update to 2.4.0 in pack 5.5. If you're upgrading an older world, check the mod's own release notes before assuming items or mechanics work the way they used to.
