What is Utilitarian?

2 parts

This pack includes Utilitarian 1.21.1-0.19.2. In the pack's quest book, the part of the mod that gets attention is the Trader Carpets, which come in many dye colours, for example White Trader Carpet and Black Trader Carpet.[1][2]

What the carpets do

The quest book says Trapped Trader Carpets instantly kill any Wandering Traders that spawn near them, and it calls them possibly the best items in the entire pack. If the trader keeps pestering you, this is your fix.[2]

The quest book gives the carpets a second use too. Wandering Traders have a chance of selling Growing Edelwood, and the quest suggests using Trader Carpets so you at least know where the trader will spawn.[3]

Where the quest book puts it

The carpets show up in two chapters. The first is "Tips and Tricks" in the group "The Basics", chapter 15 of 54 in the book, with 11 quests. The carpet quest there is a quest in "Tips and Tricks", "No more Annoying Traders!", and any one of the carpets completes it. Other quests in the same chapter include "Crafting... on a Stick!" quest, "Simple Magnets" quest, "Iron Jetpacks" quest and "Charging Gadgets" quest.[2]

The chapter's closing quest, a quest in "Tips and Tricks" ("Complete all the tips!"), lists Infinite Water, Personal Shrinking Device, Simple Magnets, Charging Gadgets and Iron Jetpacks as its prerequisites. The carpet quest is not among them.[2]

The second is "Forbidden and Arcanus" in the group "Mod specific Quests", chapter 41 of 54, with 47 quests. There the carpets are the task for "Buying Edelwood" quest, "Buying Edelwood" (subtitled "From Wandy T'"). It is the luck-based alternative to growing Edelwood with Corrupt Souls, the route covered by "Corrupt Souls" quest. The quest as shown lists no prerequisite quest.[3]

Unverified The text of 31 of the 47 quests in the "Forbidden and Arcanus" chapter is not included in the sources here, so any other Utilitarian mentions in that chapter are in the quest book itself.

How do you get started with Utilitarian?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Utilitarian adds a set of small utility blocks and items. The one worth making first in this pack is the Trader Carpet, because it deals with Wandering Traders, so that's where we start.[4][5][6][7]

Make a Trader Carpet

The White Trader Carpet is the first thing I'd craft. Its tooltip says arriving traders will end up on this block instead of in your face. There is one recipe per colour, and they all work the same way. The white one is shown here.[6][7]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: utilitarian:no_soliciting/soliciting_carpets/white_soliciting_carpet

The quest "Buying Edelwood" quest explains why this matters. The Wandering Trader is very random, and carpets at least tell you where he'll spawn. That quest also says he has a chance of selling Growing Edelwood, which is an alternative to growing Edelwood with Corrupt Souls.[4]

Upgrade it to a Trapped Trader Carpet

If you don't want the trader around at all, turn a Trader Carpet into a White Trapped Trader Carpet. The pack's quest a quest in "Tips and Tricks" says a trapped carpet instantly kills any Wandering Trader that spawns near it, and calls these maybe the best items in the entire pack.[5][6]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: utilitarian:no_soliciting/soliciting_carpets/white_trapped_soliciting_carpet

Watch out: A trapped carpet kills the trader. If you're hoping to buy Growing Edelwood from him, stick with the normal carpet.[4][5][7]

Grab a few helpers

  • The Trowel has a pull setting that you change with Shift right click. That's all the sources say about it.[6][7]
  • The Redstone Clock changes its pulse frequency when you right click it with an empty hand. Sneak to increase it faster.[6][7]
  • The Sound Muffler mutes sounds within a set block radius. The sources here don't give the radius.[6][7]

How does Utilitarian work?

7 parts

Utilitarian is a collection of small utility blocks and items, and the pack's data describes each one in a line or two. This section covers what the sources confirm about how they behave.[7]

Trader carpets

A Trader Carpet gives wandering traders somewhere to land: arriving traders end up on this block instead of in your face. The carpets come in many colors, for example Black Trader Carpet and Blue Trader Carpet.[7][8]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: utilitarian:no_soliciting/soliciting_carpets/black_soliciting_carpet

Each color also has a Trapped version, such as Black Trapped Trader Carpet. The tooltip says this carpet is trapped and will kill the trader. You craft it from the matching normal Trader Carpet.[7][8]

Keeping raiders away

The Raider Outpost Claim Block is meant to be placed in an outpost to stop raiders from returning. The mod's outposts tag contains only the vanilla pillager outpost.[7][9]

The same recipe group also holds the No Soliciting Banner and the Restraining Order.[8]

Lamps and redstone tools

The Lapis Lamp lights up an area on the client side only. The tooltip puts it plainly: it's still dark, you just can't see it.[7]

  • Redstone Clock: right click it with an empty hand to change the pulse frequency. Sneak while doing so to increase it faster. A message shows the current clock frequency.[7]
  • TPS Meter: outputs a redstone signal based on the dimension's TPS.[7]
  • Sound Muffler: mutes sounds within a set block radius, shown in its tooltip.[7][10]

Other tools

  • Trowel: shift right click to change its pull setting.[7]
  • Slime Bucket: it gets visibly excited when you visit a slime chunk.[7]

The Fluid Hopper, Block Magnet (named Block Magnet) and Angel Block all have crafting recipes in the pack.[7][8]

Drit and Grrass

These two blocks hurt you. Drit hurts but grass can grow on it. Grrass also hurts, and the description warns you not to let it be struck by lightning. The Cursed Grrass Block exists too.[7]

When broken without Silk Touch, both Grrass and Cursed Grrass drop Drit. With Silk Touch you get the block itself.[11][12]

Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal

The pack changes the recipes that make Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal. They are crafted through Actually Additions recipes rather than a Utilitarian recipe.[8]

Pack config

The pack ships its own common config for the mod. enableDingDongStartupSound is on, and dingDongSound is set to the experience orb pickup sound. disableRecipeAdvancements is also on.[13]

The No Startup Messages module is enabled with noStartupMessagesEnabled. Per the config comment, messages that contain one of the word sequences in noStartupMessagesMessages are stopped. The pack's list includes entries such as "This game is using an alpha build of Ender IO" and "Mekanism is currently in alpha", which are phrases from other mods' startup notices.[13]

How do you progress through Utilitarian?

3 parts

The pack's quest book does not lay out a tier path for Utilitarian. It only touches the mod through one item family, the Trader Carpets, which show up in two chapters. Everything else in the mod's recipes here is ordinary crafting-table stuff.[2][3][8]

Where the quest book puts it

The first stop is the Tips and Tricks chapter, in The Basics group (chapter 15 of 54). The quest a quest in "Tips and Tricks" is titled "No more Annoying Traders!" and asks you to get a Trader Carpet in any color, for example White Trader Carpet. Its text says Trapped Trader Carpets kill any Wandering Traders that spawn near them instantly, and calls them possibly the best items in the entire pack.[2]

The Complete all the tips quest in that chapter is gated by the Infinite Water, Personal Shrinking Device, Simple Magnets, Charging Gadgets and Iron Jetpacks quests. The carpet quest is not one of its prerequisites, so you can take it whenever you like.[2]

The second stop is the Forbidden and Arcanus chapter, in the Mod specific Quests group (chapter 41 of 54). "Buying Edelwood" quest (Buying Edelwood) wants the same Trader Carpets. The Wandering Trader has a chance of selling Growing Edelwood, and the carpets let you at least know where he will spawn. That quest is one of three that lead into a quest in "Forbidden and Arcanus", the fully grown Edelwood quest, alongside "Corrupt Souls" quest (Corrupt Souls) and a quest about sieving moss with an Iron (or better) Mesh.[3]

Crafting the carpets

The plain Trader Carpet is a shapeless crafting recipe. The Trapped version is a second shapeless recipe that starts from the plain carpet of the same color. Every color has its own pair of recipes, and the white pair is shown here as the example.[8]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: utilitarian:no_soliciting/soliciting_carpets/white_soliciting_carpet

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: utilitarian:no_soliciting/soliciting_carpets/white_trapped_soliciting_carpet

Tip: The quest tasks ask for the plain carpets, but the Tips and Tricks quest text praises the Trapped ones. Make the plain carpet first, since the Trapped recipe builds on it.[2][8]

Pack changes to Utilitarian items

The pack changes the recipes for Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal, which are made through the Actually Additions recipe ids shown below. If you remember other recipes for these items, trust these ones.[8]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Utilitarian?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

In this pack, the mod shows up in two quest chapters. Both revolve around Wandering Traders and the colored Trader Carpets, and both accept any carpet color for the task, such as White Trader Carpet or Black Trader Carpet.[4][5]

Forbidden and Arcanus: Buying Edelwood

"Buying Edelwood" quest is a quest from Wandy T'. The task is to hand in a Trader Carpet, and any color works, for example Red Trader Carpet or Blue Trader Carpet.[4]

The quest text gives you an alternative to using Corrupt Souls to grow Edelwood: rely on luck. The Wandering Trader has a chance of selling you Growing Edelwood, which you can plant to grow Edelwood. The trader is very random, so the quest suggests using Trader Carpets to at least know where he will spawn.[4]

Tips and Tricks: No more Annoying Traders!

a quest in "Tips and Tricks" is an untitled quest whose description reads "No more Annoying Traders!". Like the first quest, its task accepts any one of the Trader Carpet colors, such as Green Trader Carpet or Purple Trader Carpet.[5]

The quest text says that Trapped Trader Carpets instantly kill any Wandering Traders that spawn near them, and calls them possibly the best items in the entire pack.[5]

Tip: The two quests pull in opposite directions. In Forbidden and Arcanus you want the Wandering Trader to show up so you can hope for Growing Edelwood, and Trader Carpets help you know where he will spawn. In Tips and Tricks the Trapped Trader Carpets are there to get rid of traders near them. Pick the one that fits what you're doing.[4][5]

Unverified The sources do not say in what order the two chapters are meant to be completed, whether either quest has prerequisites, or what rewards they give. They also do not say how the Trapped Trader Carpets mentioned in Tips and Tricks relate to the carpet items accepted by the task.

Which Utilitarian config options matter?

3 parts

Utilitarian has a single config file in this pack, config/utilitarian-common.toml, and it is short. Here is what each option does and exactly how the pack sets it.[13]

Startup ding sound

  • enableDingDongStartupSound is set to true in this pack, so you get a ding sound when the game finishes starting up.[13]
  • dingDongSound is set to "entity.experience_orb.pickup", which is the sound that gets played. The file's own comment says this is also the mod default, so the pack hasn't changed it. If you want a different sound, put another sound name here.[13]

Recipe advancements

disableRecipeAdvancements is set to true. That means recipe advancements are disabled, so you won't get the recipe-unlock advancement popups from this mod.[13]

No Startup Messages module

noStartupMessagesEnabled is set to true, so the No Startup Messages module is active in this pack. It stops any message that contains one of the word sequences listed in noStartupMessagesMessages.[13]

The pack fills that list with phrases such as "This game is using an alpha build of Ender IO", "Mekanism is currently in alpha", "[Warning] Ender IO is in alpha", "This pack contains Observable", "beta version of Railcraft", "Features might be missing" and "Bug reports are welcome". It also includes "The Mekanism Team", "Thanks for using" and "Sm0keySa1m0n". Any message containing one of these gets blocked, which keeps the chat clean of alpha and beta notices from other mods.[13]

Tip: Because a message is blocked if it merely contains one of the listed sequences, a short entry like "Thanks for using" can hide any message that includes those words. If a message you expect is missing, check this list first.[13]

The file only states a default for the ding sound. For the other options, it doesn't show what the mod's defaults are, so I can't say whether the pack changed them.[13]
