What is Utilitarian?
This pack includes Utilitarian at version 1.21.1-0.14.0. It was already in the pack in 1.0 or earlier.[1]
The pack's quest book places Utilitarian in the tips_and_tricks chapter. The quest there, a quest in "?", has no title. Its task accepts a trader carpet in any color, for example White Trader Carpet, Orange Trader Carpet or Black Trader Carpet.[2]
So you don't need one particular dye color to complete it. Any trader carpet counts.[2]
The quest source shows this one quest as the only place the quest book touches the mod. It doesn't show which quests come before or after it.[2]
Unverified The sources here don't show whether the ATM Star path uses Utilitarian, and they don't include a guidebook for the mod. Check the pack's quest book for that.
How do you get started with Utilitarian?
5 parts
Utilitarian adds a handful of small utility items, and every one below is made with a normal crafting recipe in this pack. There is no strict progression, so here is the order I'd go in, starting with the item you can use straight away.[3]
First: the Trowel
Start with the Trowel. It's a tool you carry with you, and you shift right click with it to change its pull setting.[3][4]

Then: a Trader Carpet
Next, make a trader carpet, such as the White Trader Carpet. Arriving traders will end up on this block instead of in your face. The pack's tips_and_tricks quest chapter has a quest for it, a quest in "?", and a carpet in any colour counts for it.[2][4]

White Carpet

There is also a trapped version, like the White Trapped Trader Carpet. Its tooltip says it will kill the trader, so only make it if you mean it.[3][4]

Then: a Sound Muffler
The Sound Muffler mutes sounds within a block radius. The tooltip text in the sources doesn't show the radius number, so I can't tell you what it is in this pack.[3][4]
Then: redstone helpers
The Redstone Clock lets you change its pulse frequency: right click it with an empty hand, and sneak to increase it faster.[3][4]

The TPS Meter outputs a redstone signal based on the dimension's TPS.[3][4]

Finally: Drit and tiny fuel
According to its description, grass can grow on Drit, and it hurts.[3][4]
The pack has changed the recipes that turn coal into Tiny Coal and charcoal into Tiny Charcoal. Use the recipes below rather than assuming the mod's defaults.[3]
How does Utilitarian work?
5 parts
Heads up: Utilitarian is a pile of small quality-of-life blocks and items, not a tech mod. The sources I have don't describe machines, multiblocks, power, or any fluid and item automation system, so I won't invent any. This section covers what the pack's files and the mod's own tooltips do confirm.[3][4]
Lighting and redstone helpers
The Lapis Lamp lights up an area on the client side only. The area is still dark, you just can't see it.[3][4]

The Lapis Lamp and the vanilla redstone lamp both have inverted versions: the Inverted Lapis Lamp and the Inverted Redstone Lamp.[3]
- Redstone clock: right click the block with an empty hand to change the pulse frequency. The tooltip says sneaking increases it faster.[4]
- TPS meter: outputs a redstone signal based on the TPS of the dimension it's in.[4]
Tools and utility blocks
- Trowel: Shift right click to change its pull setting.[4]
- Sound muffler: mutes sounds within a block radius that its tooltip displays.[4]
The Fluid Hopper and the Angel Block both have in-pack recipes. The sources here don't explain how either one behaves, so I'm leaving their mechanics out.[3]

Trader and raider control
Trader carpets, such as the Black Trader Carpet, make arriving wandering traders end up on that block instead of in your face. The trapped variants, such as the Black Trapped Trader Carpet, are rigged to kill the trader.[3][4]

The Raider Outpost Claim Block is meant to be placed in an outpost to stop raiders from returning.[3][4]

The same family also has the No Soliciting Banner and the Restraining Order, which have their own in-pack recipes. The sources here don't describe what either one does.[3]

Tiny coal and charcoal
The pack has changed how you get Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal. They come from shapeless crafting recipes registered under Actually Additions, one per fuel.[3]
Pack config
The pack sets enableDingDongStartupSound to true, so you get a startup ding. The sound is set in dingDongSound to entity.experience_orb.pickup.[5]
disableRecipeAdvancements is true, which disables recipe advancements. noStartupMessagesEnabled is also true, which turns on the module that blocks any message containing a word sequence from noStartupMessagesMessages. In this pack that list includes sequences such as "Mekanism is currently in alpha", "[Warning] Ender IO is in alpha" and "Thanks for using".[5]
How do you progress through Utilitarian?
3 parts
The sources I have for this mod show no tiers in this pack. What they do show is one quest and a set of crafting-table recipes, so this section sticks to those.[2][3]
The one quest
The only quest the quest source ties to this mod is a quest in "?", in the tips_and_tricks chapter. It has no title, and its task is to obtain a Trader Carpet. Any one of the colors counts, for example White Trader Carpet or Black Trader Carpet.[2]
Crafting Shapeless
White Carpet
- any small flower
Recipe id: utilitarian:no_soliciting/soliciting_carpets/white_soliciting_carpet
White is shown here. Every other color has its own recipe in the pack.
Each color also has a Trapped version, for example White Trapped Trader Carpet, with its own recipe.[3]

Other things you can craft
The quest source shows no other quest for this mod, but the recipe list has these items, all made at a crafting table:[2][3]
- Snad family: Snad, Red Snad, Soul Snad and Drit.[3]
- Tools and gadgets: Trowel, TPS Meter and Redstone Clock.[3]
- Lighting: Lapis Lamp, plus the Inverted Lapis Lamp and Inverted Redstone Lamp versions.[3]
- Logistics and utility: Fluid Hopper, Well Behaved Dropper, Sound Muffler and Angel Block.[3]
- No Soliciting set: No Soliciting Banner, Restraining Order and Raider Outpost Claim Block.[3]

Changed by the pack
The recipes for Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal are marked as changed by the pack. Use these recipes rather than anything you remember from the defaults.[3]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Utilitarian?
The quest data for this mod is short: it shows one quest in the pack. It sits in the tips_and_tricks chapter, and it's quest a quest in "?", which has no title in the quest file.[2]
The quest has a single item task, and any one of the trader carpets satisfies it. Pick whichever color you like from this list: White Trader Carpet, Orange Trader Carpet, Magenta Trader Carpet, Light Blue Trader Carpet, Yellow Trader Carpet, Lime Trader Carpet, Pink Trader Carpet, Gray Trader Carpet, Light Gray Trader Carpet, Cyan Trader Carpet, Purple Trader Carpet, Blue Trader Carpet, Brown Trader Carpet, Green Trader Carpet, Red Trader Carpet and Black Trader Carpet.[2]
Since only one quest involves this mod, there is no order to follow between its quests.[2]
Which Utilitarian config options matter?
3 parts
Utilitarian has a small common config, and this pack mostly uses it for quality-of-life tweaks. Everything lives in config/utilitarian-common.toml. Here is how the pack sets each option.[5]
Startup ding sound
- enableDingDongStartupSound is set to true in this pack, so you get a ding sound when the game finishes starting up.[5]
- dingDongSound is set to entity.experience_orb.pickup, the XP orb pickup sound. The config notes that this is also the mod's default, so the pack hasn't changed it. If you want a different ding, replace it with another sound name.[5]
Recipe advancements
disableRecipeAdvancements is set to true. That means the recipe advancements are disabled in this pack.[5]
No Startup Messages module
noStartupMessagesEnabled is set to true, so the No Startup Messages module is active. It stops any message that contains one of the word sequences listed in noStartupMessagesMessages.[5]
The pack fills that list with phrases such as "This game is using an alpha build of Ender IO", "Mekanism is currently in alpha", "[Warning] Ender IO is in alpha", "This pack contains Observable" and "beta version of Railcraft". It also includes "Thanks for using", "Features might be missing", "Bug reports are welcome", "The Mekanism Team" and "Sm0keySa1m0n". Any message containing one of these word sequences gets stopped.[5]
