What is Utilitarian?

1 part

This pack includes Utilitarian at version 1.21.1-0.19.2. In the pack's quests, the part of the mod you'll meet is its Trader Carpets, which are all about controlling where Wandering Traders show up.[1][2][3]

The carpets come in many colours, for example White Trader Carpet, Red Trader Carpet and Black Trader Carpet. The quests accept any colour, so pick whichever you like.[2][3]

Where it fits in your progression

In the Forbidden and Arcanus chapter, the quest "Buying Edelwood" quest points you to the carpets as a helper for getting Edelwood. If you'd rather not use Corrupt Souls, the Wandering Trader has a chance of selling you Growing Edelwood, which you can plant to grow Edelwood. He's very random, so the quest suggests Trader Carpets to at least know where he'll spawn.[2]

In the Tips and Tricks chapter, the quest a quest in "Tips and Tricks" covers the other side of the coin. Trapped Trader Carpets instantly kill any Wandering Traders that spawn near them, and the quest says they might be the best items in the entire pack. If traders keep getting in your way, this is your fix.[3]

Tip: Use the normal carpets when you want to find the Wandering Trader, for example while hunting for Growing Edelwood. Use the trapped ones when you want traders gone.[2][3]

Unverified The sources only cover the Trader Carpets. Any other Utilitarian features, and whether the mod has a place on the ATM Star path, could not be confirmed from the pack files.

How do you get started with Utilitarian?

3 parts

Utilitarian adds a set of small utility blocks and items. The one worth making first in this pack is the Trader Carpet, because it deals with Wandering Traders, so that's where we start.[2][3][4][5]

Make a Trader Carpet

The White Trader Carpet is the first thing I'd craft. Its tooltip says arriving traders will end up on this block instead of in your face. There is one recipe per colour, and they all work the same way. The white one is shown here.[4][5]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: utilitarian:no_soliciting/soliciting_carpets/white_soliciting_carpet

The quest "Buying Edelwood" quest explains why this matters. The Wandering Trader is very random, and carpets at least tell you where he'll spawn. That quest also says he has a chance of selling Growing Edelwood, which is an alternative to growing Edelwood with Corrupt Souls.[2]

Upgrade it to a Trapped Trader Carpet

If you don't want the trader around at all, turn a Trader Carpet into a White Trapped Trader Carpet. The pack's quest a quest in "Tips and Tricks" says a trapped carpet instantly kills any Wandering Trader that spawns near it, and calls these maybe the best items in the entire pack.[3][4]

Crafting Shapeless

Watch out: A trapped carpet kills the trader. If you're hoping to buy Growing Edelwood from him, stick with the normal carpet.[2][3][5]

Grab a few helpers

  • The Trowel has a pull setting that you change with Shift right click. That's all the sources say about it.[4][5]
  • The Redstone Clock changes its pulse frequency when you right click it with an empty hand. Sneak to increase it faster.[4][5]
  • The Sound Muffler mutes sounds within a set block radius. The sources here don't give the radius.[4][5]

How does Utilitarian work?

7 parts

Utilitarian is a pile of small utility blocks and items, not a tech tree. Going by the sources here, it has no machines with power, fluid or item buffers, and no multiblocks to build. What follows is how the pieces that are documented actually behave.[4][5]

Redstone Clock

The Redstone Clock is a block that pulses on its own. Right click it with an empty hand to change the pulse frequency, and sneak while doing so to increase it faster. Each change shows a "Clock frequency" message in chat, so you can see where you landed.[5]

Lamps

The Lapis Lamp lights up an area on the client side only. The mod's own tooltip says it is still dark, you just can't see it. That makes it a visual tool and not a way to stop mobs spawning.[5]

Trader and raider control

Trader Carpets give wandering traders somewhere to land: arriving traders end up on the carpet instead of in your face. The mod has a Trader Carpet in every dye colour, for example the Blue Trader Carpet.[5]

The Trapped versions, such as the Blue Trapped Trader Carpet, are trapped and will kill the trader. Each is crafted from the matching normal carpet.[4][5]

Other blocks worth knowing

  • Sound Muffler: mutes sounds within a set block radius. The radius value is not shown in the sources here.[5]
  • TPS Meter: outputs a redstone signal based on the dimension's TPS.[5]
  • Drit: it hurts, and grass can grow on it. Its grassy relative, Grrass, also hurts, and the mod warns you not to let it be struck by lightning.[5]
  • Fluid Hopper, Block Magnet (Block Magnet) and Angel Block are all craftable in this pack, but the sources here do not describe how they work.[4][5]

Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal

Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal are made by recipes that belong to Actually Additions, and the pack has changed both. Any coal gives 8 Tiny Coal, and charcoal gives 8 Tiny Charcoal.[4]

Pack config

The pack ships a small common config. disableRecipeAdvancements is true, so the mod's recipe advancements are off. enableDingDongStartupSound is true, and the sound it plays is set by dingDongSound, which is entity.experience_orb.pickup here.[6]

noStartupMessagesEnabled is also true. That turns on the No Startup Messages module, which stops any message containing one of the word sequences in noStartupMessagesMessages. The pack's list covers warnings such as the Ender IO and Mekanism alpha notices.[6]

How do you progress through Utilitarian?

5 parts

Utilitarian is a grab bag of handy utilities, not a machine ladder, and the sources for this pack don't show any tier system for it. What they do show is two quests that both revolve around Trader Carpets, plus a set of ordinary crafting-table recipes for everything else. So your progression here is basically: grab the carpets, upgrade them if you want, then pick up the other utilities as you need them.[2][3][4]

The quest path

  1. "Buying Edelwood" quest sits in the Forbidden and Arcanus chapter. You complete it by having any colour of Trader Carpet, such as White Trader Carpet. The quest explains that the Wandering Trader has a chance of selling Growing Edelwood, which you can plant to grow Edelwood. He's very random, so the carpets help you know where he'll spawn.[2]
  2. a quest in "Tips and Tricks" is in the Tips and Tricks chapter. It accepts the same Trader Carpets, and its text tells you that Trapped Trader Carpets kill any Wandering Traders that spawn near them instantly.[3]

Step 1: Trader Carpets

The Trader Carpet is a simple shapeless crafting recipe. Every colour has its own recipe following the same pattern, so pick whichever colour you like. Here's the white one:[4]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: utilitarian:no_soliciting/soliciting_carpets/white_soliciting_carpet

Step 2: Trapped Trader Carpets

The trapped version is an upgrade of the matching colour of Trader Carpet, also crafted shapeless. Here's the white one:[4]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: utilitarian:no_soliciting/soliciting_carpets/white_trapped_soliciting_carpet

Watch out: The Edelwood quest relies on the Wandering Trader actually turning up, while Trapped Trader Carpets kill traders near them. Place them with that in mind so you don't wipe out a trader you were hoping to buy from.[2][3]

Recipes the pack changed

Two Utilitarian items are made through recipes the pack has changed: Tiny Coal and Tiny Charcoal. Both are shapeless crafting recipes.[4]

Everything else

The rest of the mod's items have no quests in the sources I have. Each one comes from its own crafting-table recipe, and you can unlock them in whatever order suits your base. Some useful ones to look up are Angel Block, Fluid Hopper, Block Magnet, Sound Muffler, TPS Meter and Trowel.[4]

Unverified Whether the pack gates any other Utilitarian items behind other quests or progression steps could not be confirmed from the available sources.

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Utilitarian?

2 parts

In this pack, the mod shows up in two quest chapters. Both revolve around Wandering Traders and the colored Trader Carpets, and both accept any carpet color for the task, such as White Trader Carpet or Black Trader Carpet.[2][3]

Forbidden and Arcanus: Buying Edelwood

"Buying Edelwood" quest is a quest from Wandy T'. The task is to hand in a Trader Carpet, and any color works, for example Red Trader Carpet or Blue Trader Carpet.[2]

The quest text gives you an alternative to using Corrupt Souls to grow Edelwood: rely on luck. The Wandering Trader has a chance of selling you Growing Edelwood, which you can plant to grow Edelwood. The trader is very random, so the quest suggests using Trader Carpets to at least know where he will spawn.[2]

Tips and Tricks: No more Annoying Traders!

a quest in "Tips and Tricks" is an untitled quest whose description reads "No more Annoying Traders!". Like the first quest, its task accepts any one of the Trader Carpet colors, such as Green Trader Carpet or Purple Trader Carpet.[3]

The quest text says that Trapped Trader Carpets instantly kill any Wandering Traders that spawn near them, and calls them possibly the best items in the entire pack.[3]

Tip: The two quests pull in opposite directions. In Forbidden and Arcanus you want the Wandering Trader to show up so you can hope for Growing Edelwood, and Trader Carpets help you know where he will spawn. In Tips and Tricks the Trapped Trader Carpets are there to get rid of traders near them. Pick the one that fits what you're doing.[2][3]

Unverified The sources do not say in what order the two chapters are meant to be completed, whether either quest has prerequisites, or what rewards they give. They also do not say how the Trapped Trader Carpets mentioned in Tips and Tricks relate to the carpet items accepted by the task.

Which Utilitarian config options matter?

3 parts

Utilitarian's settings live in one file in this pack, config/utilitarian-common.toml. The file is short, so here is each option and how the pack sets it.[6]

Startup ding sound

  • enableDingDongStartupSound is set to true in this pack, so the startup ding sound is enabled.[6]
  • dingDongSound is set to entity.experience_orb.pickup. That matches the default named in the config file, so the pack did not change it. To hear a different sound, put another sound name in this option.[6]

Recipe advancements

disableRecipeAdvancements is set to true, so recipe advancements are disabled in this pack.[6]

No Startup Messages module

noStartupMessagesEnabled is set to true, which turns on the No Startup Messages module. Any message that contains one of the word sequences in its list gets stopped.[6]

The list is noStartupMessagesMessages. The pack fills it with phrases such as "This game is using an alpha build of Ender IO", "Mekanism is currently in alpha", "beta version of Railcraft", "This pack contains Observable", "Features might be missing" and "Bug reports are welcome". If a message you want gone still shows up, add a phrase from it to this list.[6]
