What is XNet?

2 parts

XNet is a cable mod with a twist: it adds just one cable, the networking cable. With it you can instantly move items, fluids, energy and information, so one cable type replaces a whole tangle of separate pipes and wires.[1]

Why it's worth a look

  • Efficiency: the mod's author says huge networks run with no lag. It was tested with two chests separated by a cable 12,000 blocks long.[1]
  • The cables themselves are not tile entities, which is a big part of why they stay so light.[1]
  • Flexibility: the controller lets you configure in detail how things are distributed across the network.[1]

In this pack

The pack ships XNet 1.21-7.0.7, and it has been in the pack since All the Mons 0.3.0-beta or earlier.[2]

In the quest book, the Power group holds the Basic Power chapter (chapter 56 of 70, with 31 quests). Its "Transferring Power" quest quest is about wired and wireless ways to get power out of your machines. The quests that come after it cover "Pipez: Energy Pipes" quest, "Mekanism: Universal Cables" quest and "Flux Networks" quest. None of the quests of that chapter covered here mention XNet. The text of 7 of the chapter's 31 quests is not covered here, so check the chapter in the quest book for those.[3]

How do you get started with XNet?

4 parts

XNet adds a single kind of cable, the networking cable, and with it you can instantly move items, fluids, energy and information. The mod is built for efficiency and flexibility, and the controller is where the flexible part happens. So your first crafts are a controller, some cable and a connector.[1]

Step one: make the Controller

The Controller is the base block for automation in XNet, so it comes first. The pack changed its recipe, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. Check the one below.[4][5]

Step two: craft some cable

Next you need cable to carry everything. One craft of the Blue Network Cable recipe gives you 16 cables, and the pack changed this recipe too. Cables also come in green, red, yellow and routing versions. The routing cable recipe gives 32 per craft.[5]

Already have cable in the wrong colour? There are shapeless dye recipes that recolour existing cable, such as Green Network Cable from the green dye recipe.[5]

Step three: add a connector

A connector is what links the network to a chest or machine. Place it next to the block or machine you want connected to the network. Connectors come in blue, green, red and yellow, plus a Routing Connector. The pack changed the recipes for these as well.[4][5]

Later upgrades

  • Advanced Blue Connector and the other advanced connectors allow access to different sides and support faster item transfer.[4][5]
  • The Router lets you connect multiple channels (controllers).[4]
  • The Wireless Router connects multiple channels remotely, but it needs an antenna on top to work. Put an Antenna Base on the wireless router, then one or two Antenna on the base. An Antenna Dish goes on the base and gives a very extreme wireless range.[4]
Tip: Want your cables hidden? The Facade can mimic other blocks and cover XNet cables. A single craft makes 16 facades.[4][5]

How does XNet work?

6 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

XNet adds one kind of cable, the networking cable, and it carries items, fluids, energy and information through the same network. Transport through the cable is instant. The mod focuses on efficiency and flexibility.[1]

On efficiency, the cables themselves are not tile entities. The mod page says it was tested with two chests joined by a cable 12,000 blocks long, with no lag. On flexibility, the Controller is what lets you configure how everything is distributed.[1]

The building blocks

A network is made of cables, connectors and a controller. Cables such as the Red Network Cable link the network together. Connectors such as the Red Connector attach to the blocks you want to pull from or push into. The Controller is where you configure the distribution. The controller, the colored and routing cables, and the basic connectors all have recipes changed by this pack, so use the recipes below rather than anything you remember from the default mod.[1][6][7]

The Advanced Red Connector is crafted from the matching basic connector, and the pack changed that recipe too. Cables and connectors can also be recolored by combining a dye with an existing cable or connector. Those dye recipes are unchanged from the mod.[7]

Channels and connectors

Work is organised into channels. Each channel has a number and a type, and has its own toggle to enable processing. Connectors can be named, removed, copied to the clipboard, and pasted as new connectors. Channels can be copied and pasted the same way.[6]

Tip: Copy and paste exist for both channels and connectors. If you build several similar setups, copy a working one instead of configuring each from scratch.[6]

Item handling

  • Each connector either inserts items into the connected block or extracts items from it.[6]
  • A channel distributes items in either Priority or Roundrobin mode.[6]
  • When extracting, you choose between the first available slot, slots in order, or a random slot.[6]
  • The items moved per operation can be a single item, a full stack, or a specified count. There is also a separate setting for the amount to extract per operation.[6]
  • Filters have a blacklist mode. Another setting disables the connector when the destination inventory has too many or too few items.[6]
  • A speed setting sets the number of ticks for each operation.[6]

Energy and fluids

Energy and fluid settings have their own rate controls. The energy rate tooltip says it is limited per tick, and the fluid rate is capped in mb. Both also have minimum and maximum settings that can disable the operation when the energy or fluid level is too low or too high.[6]

Redstone control

A connector's redstone mode can ignore redstone, activate only when the signal is off, activate only when it is on, or do one operation per pulse.[6]

Logic and sensors

Connectors can also work with information. In output mode a connector sends a redstone signal to the connected block. In sensor mode it reads the connected block and outputs a redstone signal. A sensor can scan the following:[6]

  • The amount of energy in the block.[6]
  • The amount of fluid in the block, in mb.[6]
  • The number of a target item in an inventory.[6]
  • The redstone signal at the block.[6]

A sensor compares what it reads against an amount you set. The output can be a constant signal or a short impulse with a length in ticks. The logic filters are:[6]

  • Direct outputs a value whenever there is input, and Static always outputs the value you set.[6]
  • Inverted outputs the specified value when the input is 0 and outputs 0 for inputs of 1-15.[6]
  • AND, NAND, OR, NOR, XOR and XNOR apply the matching logical operation to the input signal.[6]
  • Latch toggles the output every time it receives an input signal.[6]
  • Counter outputs a signal every time it has received a specified number of inputs.[6]
  • Timer outputs a signal every specified number of game ticks, and 20 ticks is normally 1 second.[6]

How do you progress through XNet?

5 parts

XNet doesn't have a quest chain of its own in the sources I have, so the way to read progression here is through the crafting recipes. The good news: the pack changed most of them, so what you see below is the pack's version, not the mod default.[5]

Tier 1: Controller and cables

The Controller has a recipe changed by the pack. This is the first thing to craft.[5]

Cables come in four colours: Red Network Cable, Blue Network Cable, Green Network Cable and Yellow Network Cable. Each pack-changed recipe makes 16 cables at once. Here is the red one as an example.[5]

Already have cables in the wrong colour? There are shapeless dye recipes that recolour a cable. Those are the mod's own recipes, not pack changes.[5]

Tier 2: Connectors

Connectors also come in red, blue, green and yellow, and the pack changed all four recipes. The red one is shown here. The dye recipes let you recolour a connector too.[5]

The Routing Connector is the odd one out. Its recipe is also pack-changed, and it takes an existing connector as part of the craft. Routing cables are cheaper per craft than the coloured ones, since one craft of Routing Network Cable gives you 32.[5]

Tier 3: Advanced connectors

The next step up is the advanced connector for each colour, for example the Advanced Red Connector. The pack changed these recipes, and each one is built from the matching basic connector. That includes Advanced Routing Connector (NOT), built from the Routing Connector.[5]

Tip: Advanced connectors can be recoloured with a dye recipe as well, so you don't need to craft a new one from scratch if you picked the wrong colour.[5]

How does XNet work with other mods?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

XNet adds a single cable type, so its links with other mods show up mostly in how you craft its machines. In this pack, the shared link is the Machine Frame. It sits outside XNet's own namespace and is part of the recipes for the Controller, Redstone Proxy, Router and Wireless Router.[1][7]

Watch out: The pack changed every one of these XNet recipes. Don't rely on the mod's default recipes or on older guides. Use the recipes shown below, which are the exact in-pack versions.[7]

Which All the Mons quests use XNet?

1 part

Here is the honest answer: in the quest chapters I could check for this guide, no quest asks for an item from XNet. The two chapters that deal with power and machines are Basic Power (in the Power group) and Oritech (in the Tech group). None of their tasks use an item with the xnet namespace.[3][8]

Where the quest book covers moving power

The closest the Basic Power chapter gets is "Transferring Power" quest, which comes right after "Basic Power" quest. It introduces wired and wireless ways to transfer power, and the quests that follow it are about other mods.[3]

The Oritech chapter has its own transfer quest, "Transfering Energy" quest, which sits right after "Oritech Beginnings" quest. It asks for Oritech's own energy pipes, so it is not an XNet quest either.[8]

Tip: Since no quest in these chapters touches XNet, don't wait for the quest book to unlock or teach it. The recipes and config sections of this guide are the place to look.[3][8]

What changed in XNet between versions?

1 part

All the Mons 1.3.0 ships XNet 1.21-7.0.7. XNet has been in the pack since All the Mons 0.3.0-beta or earlier, so it's one of the long-standing mods here.[2]

XNet 1.21-7.0.7

  • The Patchouli manual documentation was updated and expanded. If you're learning XNet, the in-game manual is the first place to look for the latest write-ups.[9]

That is the only change the mod's changelog lists for this version. I have no pack changelog entries for XNet, so I can't tell you how the pack's own releases changed it over time.[2][9]
