Starbunclemania is a mod in FTB StoneBlock 4 1.23.0, where it is version 1.5.9. Expand Ars Nouveau's Starbuncles with new jobs! Also adds liquified Source. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Starbunclemania?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.14 guide

Starbunclemania is part of this pack, which ships version 1.5.1 of the mod (file starbunclemania-1.21.1-1.5.1.jar). It has been in the pack since version 3.0 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the mod list rather than a recent addition.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't describe what Starbunclemania does or who it is aimed at, so I can't tell you about its features or mechanics here. They also don't show any quests in this pack that involve it, and they don't place it on the ATM Star path, so I can't say where it fits in the pack's progression.

How do you get started with Starbunclemania?

6 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Starbunclemania is all about giving your Starbuncles new jobs. Each job item changes what a Starbuncle does when you use it on one, so the first things to make are the ones that put your Starbuncles to work. Here is the order I'd go in.[2]

First: Starminer

Start with the Starminer. It changes a Starbuncle's job to mine blocks in specified spots, and you can give it a tool to use (it defaults to an iron pick). The pack changed this recipe from the mod's version, so go by the one below.[2][3]

Tip: Every one of these job items can also be used as a simple cosmetic. Sneak while using it and the Starbuncle keeps its current behavior.[2]

Then: Fluid Jar and Starbucket

To move fluids, you first need a Fluid Containment Jar. The pack changed this recipe too. The jar is also an ingredient in the Starbucket, which changes a Starbuncle's job to transport fluids around.[2][3]

Fluid Starbuncles are tuned in the server config. In this pack the transfer rate is set by [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starbucket_ratio]] at 1,000, and the check threshold by [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starbucket_threshold]] at 250. Lower the threshold if you want them to check and fill more often.[4]

Then: StarbAttery

The StarbAttery changes a Starbuncle's job to transport FE energy around. The pack changed its recipe as well. Its transfer rate is [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starbattery_ratio]], set to 100,000 in this pack.[2][3][4]

How does Starbunclemania work?

5 parts

Starbunclemania is about giving your familiars new jobs. Most of its items are job items you use on a Starbuncle, and each one swaps what that Starbuncle does. If you sneak while using one of these items, it acts as a simple cosmetic and leaves the current behavior alone.[5]

Starbuncle job items

  • Starbucket changes a Starbuncle's job to transporting fluids around.[5]
  • StarbAttery changes the job to transporting FE energy around.[5]
  • Starballoon changes the job to transporting Mekanism chemical around. It can be dyed, and it supports Starbuncles, Drygmies and Wixies.[5]
  • Starbuilder changes the job to placing blocks in specified spots.[5]
  • Starminer changes the job to mining blocks in specified spots. You can give it a tool to use, and it defaults to an iron pick.[5]
  • StarBin changes the job to voiding the items the Starbuncle picks up, and items from linked chests.[5]
  • Square Robin Mask tweaks the Starbuncle's item transport so it round-robins items between inventories. It also stops pickup.[5]
  • Wyrm Degree is a cosmetic for Starbuncles and Bookwyrm familiars. It also lets item Starbuncles read Direction Scrolls.[5]
Watch out: The pack changed several of these recipes: StarbAttery, StarBin, Starbuilder, Starminer and the Fluid Jar. Use the recipe boxes on this page rather than any recipe you remember from the mod's defaults.[6]

Transfer rates and thresholds

The fluid, energy and chemical Starbuncles each have a transfer rate and a threshold in the server config. In this pack the fluid Starbuncle uses a ratio of 1,000 and a threshold of 250 ([[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starbucket_ratio]] and [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starbucket_threshold]]). The chemical Starbuncle uses the same numbers ([[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starballoon_ratio]] and [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starballoon_threshold]]). The energy Starbuncle moves much more, with a ratio of 100,000 and a threshold of 1,000 ([[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starbattery_ratio]] and [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starbattery_threshold]]). All of these match the mod defaults, so the pack has not changed them.[7]

Tip: The config describes each threshold as something you can lower if you need the Starbuncles to check and fill more often.[7]

Wixie cauldrons

Wixies can take over the recipes of other crafting blocks. You use a Wixie Charm on the block, and the Wixie then works with that block's recipes.[5]

  • On a Furnace, Wixies use smelt and smoke recipes.[5]
  • On a Stonecutter, Wixies use stonecutter recipes.[5]
  • On a Cutting Board, Wixies use cutting board recipes.[5]
  • On a Cooking Pot, Wixies use cooking pot recipes.[5]
  • On a Crucible, Wixies use Eidolon's crucible recipes.[5]
  • On a Fluid Jar, you get the Wixie Mixer. Wixies use the milk and water in the side tanks for crafting recipes instead of buckets.[5]

Each of these cauldron blocks drops its original block when broken. The Mixer drops the Fluid Jar. The Cooking Pot and Cutting Board versions only exist when Farmer's Delight is loaded, and the Crucible version only when Eidolon Repraised is loaded.[8][9][10][11][12][13]

The Fluid Containment Jar is the block called Fluid Containment Jar. When you break it, it keeps its name and its stored fluid. It is also the base for the Starbucket, the Source Condenser and the Wixie Mixer.[5][6][11][14]

The Source Condenser turns Source into liquid source. Making a bucket of liquid source costs 1,000 Source in this pack, which is the mod default ([[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.source_condense_cost]]).[7][15]

The Fluid Sourcelink converts fluid into Source. [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.fluid_to_source]] sets how much Source each milli-bucket of a fluid is worth, using entries like "minecraft:lava=1.6". The pack leaves that list empty.[7][16]

Mob jars render their fluid in the world, controlled by [[config:config/starbunclemania-common.toml#General Configs.mob_jar_render]], which is on in this pack.[17]

Fluid glyphs

The mod adds two spell glyphs for fluids. Glyph Pickup Fluid picks up fluids from the world and fills a tank in your hotbar or next to the turret. Glyph Place Fluid places fluid in the world, draining from a tank in the hotbar or next to the turret. With the Sensitive augment, Place Fluid puts the fluid inside the block you hit instead of relative to it.[5][6][18][19]

Both glyphs are enabled and neither is a starter glyph. Both sit at tier 2 (general.glyph_tier and general.glyph_tier).[18][19]

Pickup Fluid costs 80 (general.cost) and Place Fluid costs 20 (general.cost). Both are mod defaults. The pack sets no augment limits, cost overrides or invalid combos for either glyph.[18][19]

How do you progress through Starbunclemania?

6 parts

This mod has no tier ladder that I can show you, so the clearest way to follow progression is by how each item is made. Starbunclemania items come from plain crafting table recipes, Ars Nouveau enchanting apparatus recipes and glyph recipes, plus one Mekanism rotary recipe for Source fluid and gas.[6]

Early crafting table gear the pack changed

Several of the early utility items have recipes the pack has changed from the mod's own, so trust the recipes shown here over other guides. The changed ones are Fluid Containment Jar, StarbAttery, StarBin, Starbuilder and Starminer.[6]

Scrolls and the Fluid Jar chain

Once you have a Fluid Containment Jar, it feeds into other recipes: the Starbucket, the Source Condenser and the pickup fluid glyph (Glyph Pickup Fluid). A mixer wixie cauldron also drops a Fluid Jar when broken.[6][11]

The mod's scrolls are Direction Scroll, Fluid Scroll: Allow and Fluid Scroll: Deny. Each fluid scroll also has a clear recipe that takes the scroll and gives you the same scroll back. The scroll recipes are shown below.[6]

Enchanting apparatus and glyphs

Some items come from the Ars Nouveau enchanting apparatus rather than the crafting table: the Starballoon, the Starbucket and the Starddle [WIP] (marked WIP in its name). The Starballoon can then be dyed with a separate dye recipe.[6]

The cooking pot and cutting board variants only drop their blocks when Farmer's Delight is loaded, and the crucible variant only drops its block when Eidolon Repraised is loaded.[8][9][10][12][13]

How does Starbunclemania work with other mods?

4 parts

Starbunclemania connects to the rest of the pack mostly through Ars Nouveau. Nearly every in-pack recipe for the mod uses an Ars Nouveau item, and a few others reach into vanilla items, the Source fluid and one of the pack's own machine recipes.[6]

Ars Nouveau

The cosmetic headwear is plain crafting. Each piece pairs Magebloom Fiber with one vanilla block: Alakakrinos Hat uses Sandstone, Drygmy Horns uses Brown Wool, Sea Bunny uses White Wool, Blues Hat uses Black Wool, Starby Ears uses Light Blue Wool and Whirli Propeller uses Green Wool.[6]

Which Starbunclemania config options matter?

4 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.23.0 guide

Here's the quick version: for every option in the files below that lists a mod default, the pack's value is the same as that default. Nothing has been tweaked, so you can follow the mod's normal behaviour and only change things if you want to.[20][21][22]

Starbuncle transfer settings

These live in config/starbunclemania-server.toml. Each kind of transfer starbuncle has a ratio (its transfer rate) and a threshold. Here's what the pack uses:[22]

  • Fluid starbuncles: [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starbucket_ratio]] is 1000 and [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starbucket_threshold]] is 250.[22]
  • Gas starbuncles: [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starballoon_ratio]] is 1000 and [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starballoon_threshold]] is 250.[22]
  • Energy starbuncles: [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starbattery_ratio]] is 100,000 and [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.starbattery_threshold]] is 1000.[22]
Tip: If your starbuncles feel slow to top things up, lower the matching threshold option. The config describes it as the setting to lower when you need them to check and fill more often.[22]

Source and fluids

[[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.source_condense_cost]] is the source cost to make a bucket of liquid source, and the pack keeps it at 1000. [[config:config/starbunclemania-server.toml#General Configs.fluid_to_source]] sets the value of a milli-bucket of fluid converted into source by the sourcelink, with an example entry of minecraft:lava=1.6. The pack leaves it as an empty list, so it adds no custom entries.[22]

Fluid glyphs

Each fluid glyph has its own file in config/starbunclemania. general.enabled and general.enabled are both true, so both glyphs are on.[20][21]

general.glyph_tier and general.glyph_tier are both set to 2. general.starter and general.starter are both false, so neither is a starter glyph.[20][21]

general.per_spell_limit and general.per_spell_limit are both 2,147,483,647, which is effectively no limit on how many times each glyph can appear in one spell.[20][21]

The augment cost overrides, augment limits and invalid combos options (for example general.augment_cost_overrides, general.augment_limits and general.invalid_combos) are all empty lists for both glyphs, so the pack adds no extra restrictions or cost changes to them.[20][21]

Rendering

[[config:config/starbunclemania-common.toml#General Configs.mob_jar_render]] enables rendering of the mob jar fluid, and the pack sets it to true.[23]
