What is Sophisticated Storage?
2 parts
Sophisticated Storage is part of the pack at version 1.5.91. It adds a whole family of storage items, and the pack gives you a dedicated quest chapter so you can work through them step by step.[1][2]
The chapter starts with the Basic Tier Upgrade quest ("Sophisticated Storage" quest). Every other quest in the chapter unlocks after it, so it's your entry point.[2]
How the quest chapter is laid out
Right after that first quest, the chapter splits into several branches:[2]
- Tier upgrades: "Tier Upgrades" quest accepts any of Basic to Iron Tier Upgrade, Basic to Gold Tier Upgrade, Basic to Diamond Tier Upgrade or Basic to Netherite Tier Upgrade.[2]
- Limited barrels: "Limited Barrels" quest accepts any of Limited Barrel 1, Limited Barrel 2, Limited Barrel 3 or Limited Barrel 4.[2]
- Packing Tape has its own quest, "Moving Chests" quest. It also shows up in the useful items and tips chapter as "Packing Tape" quest.[2][3]
- Network tools: "Creating Storage Networks" quest asks for the Storage Tool, the Storage Controller and the Storage Link.[2]
- Upgrades: "Upgrade Base" quest asks for the Upgrade Base and unlocks the upgrade quests below.[2]
The upgrade quests
Once you have the Upgrade Base quest done, five more quests open up. Each one accepts any item from its group:[2]
- Void: Void Upgrade or Advanced Void Upgrade ("Void Upgrades" quest).[2]
- Stack: any of the Stack Upgrade tiers, from Stack Upgrade Tier 1 up to Stack Upgrade Tier 5, including Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus ("Stack Upgrades" quest).[2]
- Crafting, stonecutting and smelting: Crafting Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade or Smelting Upgrade ("Useful Upgrades" quest).[2]
- Hopper: Hopper Upgrade or Advanced Hopper Upgrade ("Hopper Upgrades" quest).[2]
- Pickup and magnet: Pickup Upgrade, Advanced Pickup Upgrade, Magnet Upgrade or Advanced Magnet Upgrade ("Pickup Upgrades" quest).[2]
Unverified Where Sophisticated Storage fits in the wider progression is not confirmed. The quest chapter only shows the order above, and the mod is not on the ATM Star quest path. Detailed behavior of individual upgrades and any pack-specific recipe changes are not covered by the sources yet.
How do you get started with Sophisticated Storage?
4 parts
Welcome to Sophisticated Storage! In this pack the quest book gives you a clear path through the mod. The storage chapter starts with one item, the Basic Tier Upgrade, and every other quest in that chapter unlocks from it.[2]
Step 1: Basic Tier Upgrade
This is the first quest in the chain ("Sophisticated Storage" quest). The item upgrades vanilla inventories to their sophisticated version. The pack changed its recipe, so use the one below and not what you remember from the mod's defaults.[2][4][5]

Step 2: Pick a branch
Once the first quest is done, several quests open up at once. You can do them in any order, but this is the order I'd go in.[2]
- Limited barrels ("Limited Barrels" quest). The quest accepts any of the four tiers, from Limited Barrel 1 up to Limited Barrel 4. Each barrel has a set number of slots and a stack size multiplier. The pack changed these recipes, and there are per-wood versions as well as a generic one.[2][4][5]
- Tier upgrades ("Tier Upgrades" quest). The quest accepts the iron, gold, diamond or netherite upgrade. In the pack, the gold upgrade is crafted from the iron one, the diamond from the gold, and the netherite from the diamond. The iron upgrade can also be made from the copper one.[2][4]
- Packing Tape ("Moving Chests" quest). Its tooltip has a disabled state for when the config is set to drop all storages as packed, so check that setting if the tape seems to do nothing. The tape also has a quest in the useful items and tips chapter ("Packing Tape" quest).[2][3][5]
- Storage Tool, Controller and Storage Link ("Creating Storage Networks" quest). You need all three for this quest.[2]

Step 3: Controller and links
The Storage Controller lets you deposit and pipe items to and from a connected multiblock of storages. The Storage Link connects a separate multiblock to the controller, and you use the Storage Tool to link it.[5]

Step 4: Upgrade Base and storage upgrades
The Upgrade Base quest ("Upgrade Base" quest) unlocks the upgrade quests. These cover void upgrades ("Void Upgrades" quest), stack upgrades ("Stack Upgrades" quest), crafting, stonecutter and smelting upgrades ("Useful Upgrades" quest), hopper upgrades ("Hopper Upgrades" quest), and pickup and magnet upgrades ("Pickup Upgrades" quest).[2]
The pack's recipes for the Hopper Upgrade and the Crafting Upgrade both use the Upgrade Base, so make that first.[4]

How does Sophisticated Storage work?
6 parts
Sophisticated Storage is built around one idea: a storage block has a number of inventory slots and a number of upgrade slots, and both depend on its material. In this pack the values match the mod defaults, and you can change them in the server config.[6]
Tiers, slots and upgrade slots
- Wood barrel or chest: 27 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot. See server.WoodChest.inventorySlotCount and server.WoodBarrel.upgradeSlotCount.[6]
- Copper: 45 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot.[6]
- Iron: 54 inventory slots and 2 upgrade slots.[6]
- Gold: 81 inventory slots and 3 upgrade slots.[6]
- Diamond: 108 inventory slots and 4 upgrade slots.[6]
- Netherite: 132 inventory slots and 5 upgrade slots.[6]
The same numbers apply to barrels, chests and shulker boxes of each material. The plain Shulker Box has 27 slots and 1 upgrade slot, and Copper Shulker Box has 45 slots and 1 upgrade slot.[5][6]
You move up a tier with upgrade items or recipes. The pack has changed these recipes, so check the in-game recipe rather than any outside guide. Here is how a copper barrel is made from a normal barrel:[4]

| any copper ingot | any copper ingot | any copper ingot |
| any copper ingot | any copper ingot | |
| any copper ingot | any copper ingot | any copper ingot |

The pack also changes the later tier steps. For example, the Basic to Netherite upgrade builds on the Basic to Diamond upgrade:[4]
Crafting Shapeless
Basic to Diamond Tier Upgrade
- any netherite ingot
Recipe id: sophisticatedstorage:basic_to_netherite_tier_upgrade
Limited barrels
Limited barrels come in four sizes (I to IV) for every material. Each one shows its slot count and a base stack size multiplier in its tooltip. The multiplier is set per barrel in the config. Here are some of the values in this pack:[5][6]
- Limited Barrel I: server.LimitedBarrelI.baseSlotLimitMultiplier is 32.[6]
- Limited Barrel II: server.LimitedBarrelII.baseSlotLimitMultiplier is 16.[6]
- Limited Barrel III: server.LimitedBarrelIII.baseSlotLimitMultiplier is 10.[6]
- Limited Barrel IV: server.LimitedBarrelIV.baseSlotLimitMultiplier is 8.[6]
- Limited Diamond Barrel I: server.LimitedDiamondBarrelI.baseSlotLimitMultiplier is 128.[6]
- Limited Netherite Barrel I: server.LimitedNetheriteBarrelI.baseSlotLimitMultiplier is 160.[6]
Limited barrels can be dyed to change their colour, because server.limitedBarrelCountDyeingEnabled is on. A Limited Diamond Barrel I can be upgraded to the Netherite version like this:[4][6]
Storage Tier Upgrade Shapeless (sophisticatedstorage)
Limited Diamond Barrel 1
- any netherite ingot
Recipe id: sophisticatedstorage:limited_netherite_barrel_1
Storage multiblocks
You can join several storages into one multiblock with the Storage Controller. It lets you deposit items into the connected storages and pipe items to and from them. The controller reaches storage blocks within 15 blocks, set by server.controllerRange.[5][6]
- Storage Connector: bridges gaps between storage blocks in a multiblock.[5]
- Storage Input: lets you pipe items into the multiblock. Its tooltip says it is optimized for low TPS impact.[5]
- Storage Output: lets you pipe items out of the multiblock.[5]
- Storage I/O: lets you pipe items both in and out.[5]
- Storage Link: connects a separate multiblock of storages to a controller. You link it to the controller with the Storage Tool.[5]
Automation upgrades
Upgrades go in the upgrade slots, so higher tiers can run more of them at once. Some types are capped per storage by server.maxUpgradesPerStorage. Barrels, chests and shulker boxes can each hold 1 furnace-type upgrade, 2 stack upgrades and 1 jukebox upgrade. Limited barrels are capped at 1 furnace-type upgrade and 1 jukebox upgrade.[6]
- Hopper upgrade: moves items every 8 ticks, 1 item per transfer, with 2 input and 2 output filter slots. The Advanced Hopper moves every 2 ticks, up to 4 per transfer, with 4 input and 4 output filter slots.[6]
- Magnet upgrade: picks up items within 3 blocks and has 9 filter slots. The advanced version reaches 5 blocks and has 16 filter slots.[6]
- Smelting, blasting and smoking upgrades (and their auto versions): speed and fuel efficiency multipliers are both 1 in this pack, so they run at vanilla furnace speed.[6]
- Void upgrade: voiding is always available, because server.voidUpgrade.voidAlwaysEnabled is true. The same applies to the advanced version.[6]
- Compacting upgrade: has 9 filter slots and also tries the hollow 3x3 shape (111/101/111) when checking whether items can be compacted. Only one Compacting Upgrade can sit in a storage at a time.[5][6]
- Compression upgrade: can manage up to 5 slots. The pack also allows it to decompress glowstone and quartz blocks into 4 dust or quartz each.[6]
- Stack upgrade: bundles and all vanilla shulker boxes stay non-stackable even with it installed.[6]
The Alchemy Upgrade has 4 filter slots, and the Advanced Alchemy Upgrade has 8. The Advanced Alchemy Upgrade automatically uses potions, food with effects, or milk buckets. Its recipe takes the basic Alchemy Upgrade as one of its inputs.[4][5][6]

Fluids and experience
The pump upgrade moves fluids. server.pumpUpgrade.filterSlots gives it 4 fluid filter slots. Its base rate is set by server.pumpUpgrade.maxInputOutput, which is 20 mB per operation. That base is multiplied by the number of rows in the storage and by the stack multiplier. server.pumpUpgrade.stackMultiplierRatio is 1 here, so the stack multiplier applies in full.[6]
The XP pump can mend items with Mending, because server.xpPumpUpgrade.mendingOn is true. The limit per mending operation is server.xpPumpUpgrade.maxXpPointsPerMending, which is 5 experience points.[6]
Breaking and moving storage
In this pack common.dropPacked is false. Chests and barrels do not automatically drop as packed with their contents, so you need packing tape to carry a full one.[5][7]
The pack also adds the Sophisticated Storage barrels and chests, including the limited variants, to Mekanism's cardboard box blacklist. It adds them to the deny lists of Just Dire Things' swapper and Building Gadgets 2 as well. You cannot move them with those tools.[8]
How do you progress through Sophisticated Storage?
3 parts
Sophisticated Storage progression in this pack has two layers: the tier of your storage block (Basic, then Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond and Netherite) and the upgrades you slot into it. The pack's quest chapter walks you through both, starting from the Basic Tier Upgrade.[2][4]
The quest path
Everything hangs off one opening quest, "Sophisticated Storage" quest. Five quests unlock directly after it, and one of them, the Upgrade Base quest, opens a second set of five branches.[2]
- "Tier Upgrades" quest: submit any one of the Iron, Gold, Diamond or Netherite tier upgrades (Basic to Iron Tier Upgrade, Basic to Gold Tier Upgrade, Basic to Diamond Tier Upgrade, Basic to Netherite Tier Upgrade).[2]
- "Limited Barrels" quest: submit any Limited Barrel, from Limited Barrel 1 up to Limited Barrel 4.[2]
- "Moving Chests" quest: get Packing Tape. The pack also has a separate tips quest, "Packing Tape" quest, for the same item.[2][3]
- "Creating Storage Networks" quest: collect the Storage Tool, the Storage Controller and the Storage Link.[2]
- "Upgrade Base" quest: get the Upgrade Base. This is the gateway to all the upgrade quests below.[2]
Storage tiers
The pack changes the recipes for the tier upgrades. The first piece is the Basic Tier Upgrade.[4]

Upgrades after the Upgrade Base
Once you have the Upgrade Base, five quests open up. Each one accepts any upgrade from its family, so you can pick the version you can afford.[2]
- "Void Upgrades" quest: Void Upgrade or Advanced Void Upgrade.[2]
- "Stack Upgrades" quest: any stack upgrade, from Stack Upgrade Tier 1 through Stack Upgrade Tier 5, including the Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus.[2]
- "Useful Upgrades" quest: Crafting Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade or Smelting Upgrade.[2]
- "Hopper Upgrades" quest: Hopper Upgrade or Advanced Hopper Upgrade.[2]
- "Pickup Upgrades" quest: Pickup Upgrade, Advanced Pickup Upgrade, Magnet Upgrade or Advanced Magnet Upgrade.[2]
Stack upgrades also climb in steps. Tier 1 comes first, and both Tier 1 Plus and Tier 2 build on it.[4]

How does Sophisticated Storage work with other mods?
3 parts
In this pack, Sophisticated Storage connects to two other mods through crafting recipes: Sophisticated Backpacks and Chipped. The recipe dump marks every one of these recipes as changed by the pack, so use the in-pack recipes shown below rather than the mod's defaults.[4]
Sophisticated Backpacks: swapping upgrades both ways
You can convert upgrades between your storage blocks and your backpacks with a shaped crafting recipe, so you don't have to rebuild an upgrade from scratch. A storage upgrade plus a couple of extra materials gives you the matching backpack upgrade. This covers the Void, Magnet, Pickup, Feeding, Jukebox, Crafting, Stonecutter and Smelting upgrades, plus their advanced versions where those exist.[4]

Chipped: workbench upgrades
Chipped adds a storage upgrade for each of its workbenches. The pack has a recipe that combines the matching Chipped block with an Upgrade Base and a couple of other materials. The upgrades are:[4]
- Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade from the Alchemy Bench[4]
- Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade from the Botanist Workbench[4]
- Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade from the Carpenters Table[4]
- Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade from the Glassblower[4]
- Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade from the Loom Table[4]
- Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade from the Mason Table[4]

Each Chipped upgrade also has a conversion recipe to its Sophisticated Backpacks twin, for example Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade, so you can move them between storage and backpacks as well.[4]
Quests
The quest tasks shown for this mod in the pack ask for Sophisticated Storage items such as the tier upgrades, Upgrade Base and Packing Tape.[2][3]
Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Sophisticated Storage?
4 parts
Sophisticated Storage shows up in two quest chapters in the pack. Nearly all of it is in the general_storage chapter, and every quest there is an item-collection task. The quests have no titles in the pack files, so you'll find them by their IDs.[2][3]
general_storage: the starting point
Everything in the chapter starts from "Sophisticated Storage" quest. It asks for the Basic Tier Upgrade plus a second item task. That second task is cut off in the data I have, so I can't say what it is.[2]
Unverified The second item task of quest 3ACF3359B3B59A05 is incomplete in the available quest data, so what it asks for is unconfirmed.
Quests unlocked by the first quest
Five quests unlock once the first one is done. Here is what each asks for:[2]
- "Tier Upgrades" quest wants any one tier upgrade: Basic to Iron Tier Upgrade, Basic to Gold Tier Upgrade, Basic to Diamond Tier Upgrade or Basic to Netherite Tier Upgrade.[2]
- "Limited Barrels" quest wants any limited barrel, from Limited Barrel 1 up to Limited Barrel 4.[2]
- "Moving Chests" quest wants the Packing Tape.[2]
- "Creating Storage Networks" quest has three item tasks: the Storage Tool, the Storage Controller and the Storage Link.[2]
- "Upgrade Base" quest wants the Upgrade Base. This one opens the upgrade branch below.[2]
The upgrade branch
After the Upgrade Base quest, four more quests open up. In each one, any of the listed items counts.[2]
- "Void Upgrades" quest: the Void Upgrade or Advanced Void Upgrade.[2]
- "Stack Upgrades" quest: any stack upgrade, from Stack Upgrade Tier 1 and Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus through Stack Upgrade Tier 2, Stack Upgrade Tier 3 and Stack Upgrade Tier 4 to Stack Upgrade Tier 5.[2]
- "Useful Upgrades" quest: the Crafting Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade or Smelting Upgrade.[2]
- "Hopper Upgrades" quest: the Hopper Upgrade or Advanced Hopper Upgrade.[2]
- "Pickup Upgrades" quest: the Pickup Upgrade, Advanced Pickup Upgrade, Magnet Upgrade or Advanced Magnet Upgrade.[2]
useful_items_tips
The useful_items_tips chapter has one more quest for this mod, "Packing Tape" quest. It asks for the Packing Tape again, the same item as in general_storage. No prerequisite is listed for it.[3]
Which Sophisticated Storage config options matter?
5 parts
Sophisticated Storage has a client, a common and a server config. The big one is the server file. In this pack, every server option shown with a mod default is set to exactly that default, so the numbers below are the mod's normal balance, not a pack tweak.[6]
Storage size and upgrade slots
Each tier has its own inventory slot count and upgrade slot count. The barrel options are listed here, and the chest and shulker box options for each metal tier carry the same values.[6]
- Wood barrel: 27 slots and 1 upgrade slot (server.WoodBarrel.inventorySlotCount, server.WoodBarrel.upgradeSlotCount).[6]
- Plain shulker box: 27 slots and 1 upgrade slot (server.ShulkerBox.inventorySlotCount, server.ShulkerBox.upgradeSlotCount).[6]
- Copper: 45 slots and 1 upgrade slot (server.CopperBarrel.inventorySlotCount, server.CopperBarrel.upgradeSlotCount).[6]
- Iron: 54 slots and 2 upgrade slots (server.IronBarrel.inventorySlotCount, server.IronBarrel.upgradeSlotCount).[6]
- Gold: 81 slots and 3 upgrade slots (server.GoldBarrel.inventorySlotCount, server.GoldBarrel.upgradeSlotCount).[6]
- Diamond: 108 slots and 4 upgrade slots (server.DiamondBarrel.inventorySlotCount, server.DiamondBarrel.upgradeSlotCount).[6]
- Netherite: 132 slots and 5 upgrade slots (server.NetheriteBarrel.inventorySlotCount, server.NetheriteBarrel.upgradeSlotCount).[6]
Limited barrels use a base slot limit multiplier instead of a slot count. Here are a few examples:[6]
- Limited barrel tier I has a multiplier of 32 (server.LimitedBarrelI.baseSlotLimitMultiplier).[6]
- Limited barrel tier IV has a multiplier of 8 (server.LimitedBarrelIV.baseSlotLimitMultiplier).[6]
- Netherite limited barrel tier I has a multiplier of 160 and 5 upgrade slots (server.LimitedNetheriteBarrelI.baseSlotLimitMultiplier, server.LimitedNetheriteBarrelI.upgradeSlotCount).[6]
Dyeing limited barrel counts is enabled in this pack (server.limitedBarrelCountDyeingEnabled).[6]
Upgrade limits
server.maxUpgradesPerStorage caps how many of certain upgrades one storage can hold. Barrels, chests and shulker boxes allow 1 furnace upgrade, 2 stack upgrades and 1 jukebox upgrade. Limited barrels allow 1 furnace upgrade and 1 jukebox upgrade.[6]
Stack upgrades will not stack bundles or any colour of shulker box, even with the upgrade installed (server.stackUpgrade.nonStackableItems).[6]
Breaking storage
common.dropPacked is false in this pack. Chests and barrels are not automatically dropped as packed with their contents when you break them, so use packing tape if you want to move a full one.[7]
There is also a safety net. If breaking would spill more than 200 item entities, the break is canceled unless you hold shift, and a message reminds you about packing tape (server.tooManyItemEntityDrops).[6]
Upgrade tuning
- Magnet range is 3 blocks for the basic magnet and 5 for the advanced one (server.magnetUpgrade.magnetRange, server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange).[6]
- The basic hopper upgrade moves up to 1 item per transfer, once every 8 ticks (server.hopperUpgrade.maxTransferStackSize, server.hopperUpgrade.transferSpeedTicks).[6]
- The advanced hopper upgrade moves up to 4 per transfer, once every 2 ticks (server.advancedHopperUpgrade.maxTransferStackSize, server.advancedHopperUpgrade.transferSpeedTicks).[6]
- The smelting upgrade has speed and fuel efficiency multipliers of 1, which matches a vanilla furnace (server.smeltingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier, server.smeltingUpgrade.fuelEfficiencyMultiplier).[6]
- Void upgrades can always void, not just overflow (server.voidUpgrade.voidAlwaysEnabled).[6]
- The storage controller connects blocks within 15 blocks (server.controllerRange).[6]
Client display options
Both client options are false, so JEI and the creative tab show every wood variant. Turn on client.showSingleWoodVariantOnly or client.showHigherTierGenericWoodVariants if the lists feel too long.[9]
