What is RFTools Builder?
1 part
RFTools Builder is an addon for RFTools Base that adds the builder, all the shape cards, and the shield system. It depends on RFTools Base and McJtyLib, and it's intended to be used together with RFTools Power. This pack includes version 1.21-7.0.6.[1][2]
It's for you if you like automating big building or mining jobs, protecting your base with force-field style shields, or building moving structures.[1][3]
Where it fits in the pack
The mod has four quests in the RFTools series chapter. Each one unlocks after the same earlier quest in that chapter, so you can pick the topic you care about first instead of following one fixed order.[3]
- a quest in "RFTools Series" covers the Builder and its shape cards. It accepts either Shape Card or Shape Card (Void), one pump or liquid card such as Shape Card (Pump), and one quarry card such as Shape Card (Quarry).[3]
- "Shield Projectors" quest covers shields. You need any shield projector, for example Shield Projector Tier 1, plus any shield template block, for example Blue Shield Template.[3]
- "Space Chambers" quest covers the space chamber setup: Space Chamber Controller, Space Chamber and Space Card.[3]
- "Advanced Elevators" quest covers movers and vehicles. It asks for the Mover, Mover Controller, Mover Control, Mover Status, Vehicle Builder and Vehicle Card.[3]
Unverified The sources don't say how much power these machines use or how this pack balances them against other progression. They also don't confirm whether any recipes or configs were changed here, so check the recipe and config sections before you plan a build.
How do you get started with RFTools Builder?
5 parts
RFTools Builder is an addon for RFTools Base. It adds the builder, all the shape cards and the shield system. It also depends on McJtyLib, and it is meant to be played together with RFTools Power. Here is the order I'd go in.[1]
Step 1: The Builder
Start with the Builder. It's the headline block of the mod, and the first quest in the chapter is about it. The same quest also asks for shape cards.[1][3]
Step 2: The Shape Card
Next, make a Shape Card. The Void card, the pump cards and the quarry cards are all crafted from it, so it's the base for everything else.[4]
The Shape Card (Void) is also a Shape Card quest option. The pack's recipe for it starts from a normal Shape Card.[3][4]

Step 3: Pump and quarry cards
The builder quest also wants one pump or liquid card and one quarry card. A plain Shape Card (Pump) and a plain Shape Card (Quarry) both count. Each one is made from a basic Shape Card.[3][4]

The Fortune and Silk quarry cards are upgrades built on top of the normal quarry card. Their recipes also use a Dimensional Shard from RFTools Base, so save them for later. Each "Clearing" version is made from its matching normal card.[4]
Step 4: Shields
The shield quest accepts any tier of Shield Projector plus any colour of Shield Template block. Start with Shield Projector Tier 1. The higher tiers are crafted from the tier below, so you can upgrade later.[3][4]

Last: Space Chamber, movers and vehicles
The other two quests in the chapter cover the Space Chamber line and the mover and vehicle line. The Space Chamber quest ("Space Chambers" quest) wants Space Chamber, Space Chamber Controller and Space Card. Both recipes are shown below.[3]

The mover and vehicle quest asks for Vehicle Card, Vehicle Builder, Mover, Mover Controller, Mover Control and Mover Status. It makes a good goal once the builder and shields are running.[3]
The Scanner, Projector and Composer also have recipes in the pack, but none of the four quests asks for them.[3][4]
How does RFTools Builder work?
8 parts
RFTools Builder adds the Builder, all the shape cards and the shield system. It is meant to be used together with RFTools Power and depends on RFTools Base and McJtyLib. The sources for this pack don't include a guidebook or in-game descriptions, so this section sticks to what the pack's configs and recipes show. That mostly means power costs and limits.[1]
Builder power and costs
The builder runs on RF. It stores up to 1,000,000 RF (builder.builderMaxRF) and can receive 20,000 RF per tick (builder.builderRFPerTick). Both match the mod defaults, so the pack hasn't changed them.[5]
- Building costs 500 RF per block operation (builder.builderRfPerOperation).[5]
- Using the builder as a pump costs a base of 300 RF per block operation (builder.builderRfPerLiquid).[5]
- Using it as a quarry or voider costs a base of 300 RF per block (builder.builderRfPerQuarry). The actual cost depends on the hardness of the block.[5]
- Moving an entity costs 5,000 RF (builder.builderRfPerEntity). Moving a player costs 40,000 RF (builder.builderRfPerPlayer).[5]
- Each block skipped costs 50 RF (builder.builderRfPerSkipped). This applies when a filter is added to the builder.[5]
- A move across dimensions is 5 times more expensive (builder.dimensionCostFactor).[5]
These are the pack's values, and every one of them matches the mod default. If you're planning a big build, work out the RF budget before you start.[5]
Shape cards
The Shape Card tells the builder what shape to work on. Shape cards must be enabled in the config (builder.shapeCardAllowed, currently true), and the quarry system needs them as well. When a shape card is used, the shape can be at most 512 blocks in size (builder.maxBuilderDimension) and offset by at most 260 (builder.maxBuilderOffset).[4][5]
The special card types change the RF cost per operation by a factor. The fortune quarry card multiplies it by 2 (builder.fortunequarryShapeCardFactor), the silk quarry card by 3 (builder.silkquarryShapeCardFactor), and the void card by 0.5 (builder.voidShapeCardFactor).[5]
The Shape Card (Placing Liquids) is made from a plain shape card, so you craft the basic card first. The recipe copies the card's data onto the new one.[4]

Quarry mode
Quarry cards are allowed in this pack (builder.quarryAllowed), and so are the heavier clearing quarry cards (builder.clearingQuarryAllowed). The pack sets these quarry options:[5]
- The base quarry speed is 8 blocks per tick (builder.quarryBaseSpeed). The infusion factor multiplied by 20 is added on top (builder.quarryInfusionSpeedFactor).[5]
- The quarry chunkloads one chunk at a time (builder.quarryChunkloads). If this were false, it would stop when it hit an unloaded chunk.[5]
- It also quarries tile entities (builder.quarryTileEntities).[5]
- The replacement block is minecraft:dirt (builder.quarryReplace).[5]
Moving tile entities
The pack sets the tile entity mode to MOVE_BLACKLIST (builder.tileEntityMode). That means all tile entities can be moved except blacklisted ones. The block list (builder.blackWhiteListedBlocks) is empty. The NBT list (builder.blackWhiteListedNBTBlocks) contains minecraft:chest set to false, so chest NBT data is blacklisted. Any block that isn't in the NBT list is blacklisted by default.[5]
Collect items mode
In its collect items mode the builder charges 20 RF per item (builder.collectRFPerItem) and 2 RF per XP level (builder.collectRFPerXP). Keeping an area under watch costs 0.5 RF per tick per area (builder.collectRFPerTickPerArea), and it collects every 10 ticks (builder.collectTimer).[5]
Space chamber
The Space Chamber is limited to a maximum dimension of 128 (builder.maxSpaceChamberDimension). The Space Chamber Controller and the Space Card have their own recipes in the pack.[4][5]

Mover
The Mover Controller stores up to 100,000 RF (mover.moverControllerMaxRF) and can receive 1,000 RF per tick (mover.moverControllerRFPerTick). One movement uses 1,000 RF (mover.rfPerMove). The vehicle control module has an upkeep of 0 RF per tick per block (mover.vehicleControlRFPerTick). The vehicle status module costs 2 RF per tick per block (mover.vehicleStatusRFPerTick).[4][5]

Client display options
- A holo HUD with the builder's progress is shown above it (builder.showProgressHud, true).[6]
- Projector sound volume is 0.4 (scanner.baseProjectorVolume). Set it to 0.0 to turn the sound off.[6]
- Unused shape render data is dropped after 10,000 ms (scanner.clientRenderDataTimeout). A lower value frees memory faster but means shape renders update more often.[6]
- A scanline flash lasts 400 ms (scanner.projectorFlashTimeout). Locator beacons are 30 blocks tall (scanner.locatorBeaconHeight).[6]
How do you progress through RFTools Builder?
5 parts
RFTools Builder in this pack is not one straight ladder. The quest chapter splits it into four branches, and each branch is a single quest that unlocks after the same earlier quest in the chapter. You can tackle them in any order. The quests are untitled, so I'll refer to them by what they ask for.[3]
Builder and shape cards
Quest a quest in "RFTools Series" is the one most people want first. It asks for a Builder, a basic Shape Card (or the Shape Card (Void) variant), a pump or liquid card, and a quarry card. For the pump and quarry tasks, any one of the listed variants counts.[3]
Every specialised card is built from the basic Shape Card. The Shape Card (Pump), Shape Card (Placing Liquids) and Shape Card (Quarry) are all crafted with a Shape Card as an input.[4]
The quarry line then upgrades step by step. The Shape Card (Fortune Quarry) and Shape Card (Silk Quarry) are both made from the plain Quarry card. The clearing versions, such as Shape Card (Clearing Quarry), are made from their non-clearing counterpart. Pack recipes also let you convert a clearing card back to its normal version.[4]

Shield projectors
Quest "Shield Projectors" quest wants any shield projector, from Shield Projector Tier 1 up to Shield Projector Tier 4, plus any one shield template block (Blue Shield Template, Red Shield Template, Green Shield Template or Yellow Shield Template). Tier 1 is enough to finish the quest.[3]
The tiers are a true upgrade chain. Tier 1 is crafted from scratch, Tier 2 is crafted from Tier 1, Tier 3 from Tier 2, and Tier 4 from Tier 3. Keep that in mind so you don't throw away a lower tier you still need.[4]

The Mover Control also cycles through pages. You craft Mover Control (Page 2) from the first page, Mover Control (Page 3) from page 2, and Mover Control (Page 4) from page 3. Page 4 can be turned back into the original Mover Control.[4]
The vehicle line also has the Vehicle Control Module and Vehicle Status Module. Both are crafted from a Vehicle Card, which the quest does not ask for.[4]

How does RFTools Builder work with other mods?
5 parts
RFTools Builder is an addon for RFTools Base. It depends on RFTools Base and McJtyLib, and its project page says it is meant to be used together with RFTools Power. Most of how it connects to other mods in this pack comes through crafting, so here is what the in-pack recipes show.[1]
RFTools Base is the backbone
In this pack, the Builder, Composer, Mover, Projector, Scanner, Space Chamber and Vehicle Builder all use the Machine Frame in their recipes. So do the three Mover control blocks and the Tier 1 shield projector. Get a steady supply of machine frames before you plan a big build.[4]
The Projector and Scanner also need an Infused Diamond. The Dimensional Shard shows up in the upgrade recipes: the Fortune and Silk quarry cards, and Shield Projector Tiers 3 and 4.[4]

Upgrades that reach into vanilla
The high-end upgrades also pull in vanilla rarities. The Shape Card (Silk Quarry) and Shield Projector Tier 4 both need a Nether Star. Each is made from the previous card or projector, so you build up to them step by step. The Shape Card (Fortune Quarry) is also an upgrade of the basic quarry card, and its recipe below is where the Emerald and Ghast Tear come in.[4]

Tag-based ingredients
Several recipes ask for any item from a common tag instead of one fixed item. Any ender pearl from that tag works for the Builder, Projector, Scanner and Mover Controller. Any iron ingot from its tag works for the Mover line and the Vehicle Builder, and any gold ingot from its tag works for Shield Projector Tier 1. The Space Chamber takes any blue dye and any glass block from their tags.[4]
Quests
The RFTools quests for the Builder, shape cards, shields, Movers and Space Chamber only ask for RFTools Builder items. Nothing in them requires items from another mod.[3]
Which FTB Skies 2 quests use RFTools Builder?
2 parts
All of this mod's quests in the pack live in one chapter, called rftools_series. It's a shared RFTools chapter, so you'll see items from the mod's main parts grouped into quests. The quests here have no titles, so I'll refer to them by what they ask for.[3]
Order: they all unlock together
Every one of these quests comes after the same earlier quest in the chapter. That means no quest here depends on another. Once you've finished that shared prerequisite, you can do them in any order you like. That earlier quest isn't covered by the sources I have, so I can't say what it asks for.[3]
What each quest asks for
- a quest in "RFTools Series" is the builder quest. You hand in a Builder, plus a shape card from each of three groups. The first group is Shape Card or Shape Card (Void). The second is Shape Card (Pump), Shape Card (Clearing Pump) or Shape Card (Placing Liquids). The third is any of the quarry cards: Shape Card (Quarry), Shape Card (Fortune Quarry), Shape Card (Silk Quarry), Shape Card (Clearing Quarry), Shape Card (Clearing Fortune Quarry) or Shape Card (Clearing Silk Quarry).[3]
- "Shield Projectors" quest is the shield quest. It wants one Shield Projector, and any tier counts: Shield Projector Tier 1, Shield Projector Tier 2, Shield Projector Tier 3 or Shield Projector Tier 4. It also wants one shield template block in any colour: Blue Shield Template, Red Shield Template, Green Shield Template or Yellow Shield Template.[3]
- "Space Chambers" quest is the space chamber quest. You need the Space Chamber Controller, the Space Chamber and the Space Card.[3]
- "Advanced Elevators" quest is the mover and vehicle quest, and it asks for the most items. You need the Vehicle Card, Mover Control, Mover Status, Vehicle Builder, Mover and Mover Controller.[3]
Unverified The sources don't give rewards for any of these quests, so I can't say what you get for finishing them.
Which RFTools Builder config options matter?
5 parts
RFTools Builder has a lot of config options, and in this pack they live in two files: a server file for costs, limits and permissions, and a client file for visuals. Every option here that lists a mod default is set to exactly that default. So the pack hasn't changed any of these values, and the numbers below are simply what you get in this pack.[5][6]
Builder power and limits
- builder.builderMaxRF is 1,000,000 RF of storage for the builder.[5]
- builder.builderRFPerTick lets the builder receive 20,000 RF per tick.[5]
- Building a block costs 500 RF through builder.builderRfPerOperation.[5]
- Moving an entity costs 5,000 RF, set by builder.builderRfPerEntity.[5]
- Moving a player costs 40,000 RF, set by builder.builderRfPerPlayer.[5]
- Shapes can be up to 512 blocks across (builder.maxBuilderDimension).[5]
- The shape offset can be up to 260 (builder.maxBuilderOffset).[5]
- Moving something across dimensions is 5 times more expensive, set by builder.dimensionCostFactor.[5]
Shape cards and quarries
Shape cards (builder.shapeCardAllowed), quarry cards (builder.quarryAllowed) and clearing quarry cards (builder.clearingQuarryAllowed) are all allowed to be crafted in this pack. The quarry also chunkloads one chunk at a time (builder.quarryChunkloads) and will quarry tile entities (builder.quarryTileEntities).[5]
- The quarry's base speed is 8 blocks per tick (builder.quarryBaseSpeed).[5]
- The fortune quarry card multiplies the builder's RF per operation by 2 (builder.fortunequarryShapeCardFactor).[5]
- The silk quarry card multiplies it by 3 (builder.silkquarryShapeCardFactor).[5]
- The void card multiplies it by 0.5 (builder.voidShapeCardFactor), so voiding is the cheapest option.[5]
Moving tile entities
builder.tileEntityMode is set to MOVE_BLACKLIST, which means every tile entity can be moved except blacklisted ones. The NBT list in builder.blackWhiteListedNBTBlocks contains minecraft:chest=false. Because that list works as a blacklist, a chest's NBT data is not transferred. The other list, builder.blackWhiteListedBlocks, is empty.[5]
Shield and scanner
- The shield block stores up to 200,000 RF (shield.shieldMaxRF).[5]
- The maximum size of a first-tier shield is 256 blocks (shield.shieldMaxSize).[5]
- Invisible shield mode is allowed (shield.allowInvisibleShield).[5]
- The scanner uses 1,000 RF per tick during a scan (scanner.scannerUsePerTick) and stores up to 500,000 RF (scanner.scannerMaxRF).[5]
- The projector uses 1,000 RF per tick while in use (scanner.projectorUsePerTick) and stores up to 500,000 RF (scanner.projectorMaxRF).[5]
- Scanner and projector shapes can be up to 512 blocks across (scanner.maxScannerDimension).[5]
Client options
builder.showProgressHud is on, so you see a holographic progress display above the builder. The projector sound volume (scanner.baseProjectorVolume) is 0.4, and 0.0 turns it off. If you find the sound annoying, this is the option to change.[6]
What changed in RFTools Builder between versions?
2 parts
FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships RFTools Builder 1.21-7.0.6. The mod has been in the pack since FTB Skies 2 1.0.1 or earlier, so you've had it for a long time. Here are the two mod releases that matter most for the version you're running.[2]
RFTools Builder 1.21-7.0.5
- The Patchouli manual documentation was updated and expanded.[7]
- The new Scanner, Projector and Composer were added.[7]
RFTools Builder 1.21-7.0.6 (the version in the pack)
- Fixed a crash in the scanner that happened in some rare situations.[8]
- Fixed a shape card bug on servers. It showed up when you manually selected the corners with a dimension that exceeds 512. The fix came from the contributor derrickmehaffy.[8]
If you play on a server and build big shapes by picking corners by hand, the shape card fix is the one you'll notice.[8]
Unverified No pack changelog entries for this mod were available, so any changes the pack itself made to RFTools Builder across its releases are unverified.
