What is Clumps?

2 parts

Clumps is a small performance mod. It groups XP orbs together into a single entity, which reduces lag when there are many orbs in a small area.[1]

It also changes how you pick orbs up. Once an orb touches you, you collect it immediately, so you don't end up with a cloud of orbs stuck in your face.[1]

In this pack

This pack ships Clumps 19.0.0.1, using the NeoForge 1.21.1 jar. It has been in the pack since version 1.0.3 or earlier.[2]

For Minecraft 1.17 and newer, the mod only needs to be installed on the server side. Only older Minecraft versions need it on both sides.[1]

Quest book

The quest text available for this guide does not include a quest for Clumps, so there is no chapter, group or neighbouring quest I can point you to. The chapter you'll see mentioned near it is "Mekanism", in the "Tech Mods" group, but that is a separate mod.[3]

Tip: Don't mix this mod up with the Ore Clumps in the Mekanism chapter. Those are an ore processing item made in the Purification Chamber, while Clumps the mod only deals with XP orbs.[1][3]

How do you get started with Clumps?

There is nothing to craft or set up to get started with Clumps. It works on its own in the background, so you don't need to make any item or machine first.[1]

Clumps groups XP orbs into a single entity when there are lots of them in a small area, which reduces lag. A big mob farm or a busy smelting setup can drop a lot of orbs, and this keeps them from piling up.[1]

It also changes how you pick orbs up: once an orb touches you, you collect it immediately, so you aren't left with a cloud of orbs floating in your face.[1]

Tip: The mod's project page says that for Minecraft 1.17 or newer it only needs to be installed on the server side. Older versions need it on both sides.[1]

Unverified Whether this pack adds any recipes, items, config options or quests for Clumps has not been confirmed from the available sources.

How does Clumps work?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Clumps is a much simpler mod than the machine and multiblock mods you'll find elsewhere in the pack. It has no machines, no power, no fluids and nothing to automate. It works quietly in the background on one thing: XP orbs.[1]

Orb clumping

When lots of XP orbs end up in a small area, Clumps groups them into a single entity. Fewer entities means less lag, which helps a lot around XP farms and big mob fights.[1]

Instant pickup

Clumps also makes you collect an orb as soon as it touches you. You don't get stuck with a swarm of orbs floating in your face.[1]

Server or client

For Minecraft 1.17 or newer, the project page says Clumps is only required on the server side. For older Minecraft versions it has to be installed on both sides.[1]

Unverified No config options, items, recipes or in-game descriptions for Clumps could be confirmed from the available sources, so this guide doesn't list any tuning values or crafting steps for it. This site does hold FTB Skies 2: Aero's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How do you progress through Clumps?

There is no Clumps progression path to follow in this pack, because the pack's quest book has no quest for it. The closest tier-style chapter is Mekanism (Tech Mods group, chapter 27 of 31), and none of its 50 quests asks you to obtain an item from this mod.[3]

The word "clumps" does show up in that chapter, but only as Ore Clumps inside Mekanism's ore processing chain. There the Purification Chamber makes them and the Crusher turns them into Dirty Dusts, as the quest "Tier 2 Ore Processing" quest describes. Nothing in the chapter ties that step to this mod, so don't treat those quests as Clumps tiers.[3]

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Clumps?

The quests I was given for this pack don't ask you for anything from this mod. The only chapter provided is the Mekanism chapter, in the Tech Mods group, and none of its quest tasks use an item from the clumps namespace. They ask for items from Mekanism, its generators, FTB Materials and Modern Industrialization.[3]

One thing can trip you up when you read that chapter. "Tier 2 Ore Processing" quest and "Tier 3 Ore Processing" quest talk about "Ore Clumps", but those are just a step in Mekanism's ore processing chain, where the Purification Chamber turns raw ore into clumps and the Crusher then crushes them into Dirty Dusts. They are not an item from this mod.[3]

I can't confirm any other quest chapter that involves this mod, so there is no quest order to follow here.[3]

What changed in Clumps between versions?

FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 ships Clumps 19.0.0.1, using the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1. It was first included in FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.0.3 or earlier, so it has been in the pack from the early releases.[2]

Here is what the mod's own changelog for that version lists, from oldest to newest. Most of it is porting work to keep up with new Minecraft versions.[4]

  • NeoForge support was added.[4]
  • A fix so the refmap is actually used.[4]
  • Ports to 1.20.3, then 1.20.4, 1.20.5 and 1.20.6.[4]
  • A port to 1.21, along with restored Forge support.[4]
  • A port to 1.21.1, which also fixes the Forge version not working. This is the version line the pack uses.[4]

The sources give no pack-specific changes to Clumps, so the changelog above is the full picture of what is confirmed.[2][4]

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as clumps, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
