What is Clumps?

1 part

Clumps is a small performance mod for XP orbs. When lots of orbs pile up in a small area, it merges them into a single entity so the game has far less to track and lag drops. Mob farms and big XP-heavy machines are where you'll notice it most.[1]

It also changes how you pick orbs up. As soon as an orb touches you, you collect it immediately, so you don't end up with a swarm of orbs floating in your face.[1]

In this pack

This pack includes Clumps 19.0.0.1, built for NeoForge 1.21.1. It was already in the pack by version 1.0.1 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the modlist.[2]

Since this is a 1.21.1 pack, Clumps only needs to be installed on the server side. Older Minecraft versions needed it on both sides, but that doesn't apply here.[1][2]

Tip: Don't mix this mod up with the "clumps" you'll read about in quests. The ore clumps in the Mekanism ore processing quests and the clumps of Grove Moss in the Roots 4 chapter are items from those mods. This mod only deals with XP orbs.[1][3][4]

How do you get started with Clumps?

1 part

Good news: Clumps doesn't ask you to craft anything or set anything up. It works in the background from the moment you load in, so there's no first item to make and no recipe to follow.[1]

What it does is group XP orbs together into a single entity. That cuts lag when lots of orbs pile up in a small area, for example around a big mob farm.[1]

It also changes how XP feels to pick up. The player collects orbs immediately once they touch you, so you aren't stuck with a bunch of orbs in your face.[1]

Server or client?

If you run your own server, the mod's project page says that for Minecraft 1.17 or newer it is only required on the server side. Older Minecraft versions need it on both sides.[1]

Unverified Whether this pack changes any Clumps behaviour is not confirmed by the available sources.

How does Clumps work?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Clumps is a much simpler mod than the machine and multiblock mods you'll find elsewhere in the pack. It has no machines, no power, no fluids and nothing to automate. It works quietly in the background on one thing: XP orbs.[1]

Orb clumping

When lots of XP orbs end up in a small area, Clumps groups them into a single entity. Fewer entities means less lag, which helps a lot around XP farms and big mob fights.[1]

Instant pickup

Clumps also makes you collect an orb as soon as it touches you. You don't get stuck with a swarm of orbs floating in your face.[1]

Server or client

For Minecraft 1.17 or newer, the project page says Clumps is only required on the server side. For older Minecraft versions it has to be installed on both sides.[1]

Unverified No config options, items, recipes or in-game descriptions for Clumps could be confirmed from the available sources, so this guide doesn't list any tuning values or crafting steps for it. This site does hold FTB Skies 2's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How do you progress through Clumps?

There is no progression path or tier breakdown for Clumps to follow in this pack. None of the 13 quests in the Roots 4 chapter has a task that involves this mod, and the Mekanism quests shown for this guide don't either.[3][4]

For the Mekanism chapter, 14 of its 83 quests could not be included here. If you want to be sure, check those in the quest book yourself, because their text is not covered in this guide.[4]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Clumps?

I couldn't find any quest in this pack's book that asks you for something from Clumps. In the chapters I could check, no task names an item from the mod, so there is no quest order to walk you through.[3][4]

You will still see the word "clumps" in a couple of quests, but it is ordinary wording. In "The Root of Natural Magic" quest, breaking Creeping Grove Moss gives clumps of Grove Moss. In "Purifying Ores" quest, the Purification Chamber turns raw ores into Ore Chunks, and "The Crusher" quest has the Crusher break ore clumps down into Dirty Dusts. Those quests are about Roots and Mekanism, not this mod.[3][4]

Tip: Don't go hunting through the Roots 4 or Mekanism chapters for a Clumps step. Neither chapter has one.[3][4]

What changed in Clumps between versions?

2 parts

FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Clumps 19.0.0.1, using the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1. The mod was already in the pack in FTB Skies 2 1.0.1 or earlier, so it's been a long-time part of Skies.[2]

What's in 19.0.0.1

The changelog for the version in your pack is mostly a run of Minecraft version ports, plus a couple of loader changes. Here are the notable entries:[5]

  • NeoForge support was added.[5]
  • A fix so the refmap is actually used.[5]
  • Ports to 1.20.3, 1.20.4, 1.20.5 and 1.20.6.[5]
  • A port to 1.21.[5]
  • Forge support was restored, and the port to 1.21.1 fixed the Forge version not working.[5]

The last of those, the port to 1.21.1, is the one that matters for you, since 1.21.1 is the version the pack's Clumps jar is built for.[2][5]

Pack-specific changes

Unverified No pack changelog entries for Clumps were available, so whether any FTB Skies 2 release changed how this mod behaves is unverified.

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as clumps, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
