What is Spice of Life: Carrot Edition?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide

Spice of Life: Carrot Edition is part of this pack, and the version you get is 1.16.5. It has been in the pack since release 1.22 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the mod list rather than a recent addition.[1]

Unverified I don't have a confirmed description of what the mod does in this pack. There's no platform page or in-jar guidebook to draw on, so I won't guess at its mechanics, config values or recipes. The data I have also shows no quests involving the mod, and it isn't on the ATM Star path, so it doesn't look like a progression gate. Check in-game before relying on any specific behavior.

How do you get started with Spice of Life: Carrot Edition?

3 parts

Spice of Life: Carrot Edition turns eating into progression: the more unique foods you try, the more max health you earn. Getting started is simple. You make one item, then you eat as many different foods as you can.[2][3]

Step 1: Craft the Food Book

Start by crafting the Food Book. It shows which foods you have already tasted and which you have not tried yet, so you can see your progress at a glance.[2][4]

Food BookMod recipe

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: solcarrot:food_book

A shapeless recipe, so the ingredients can go anywhere in the grid.

Inside, the book has an overview page with Foods Tasted and Hearts Gained, plus lists of foods you have already tasted and foods you have not tried yet. It also has a configuration page showing the minimum food value and how many foods are blacklisted or whitelisted.[2]

Step 2: Eat a variety of foods

Each unique food counts once. Here is how the hearts work in this pack:[3]

Tip: Check a food's tooltip before you eat it. It tells you whether the food is still untried, whether it already helped add hearts, or whether it cannot improve your health at all.[2]

Foods that will not count

The pack blacklists Biomass from Oritech and Fluorescent Jelly from Cognition (filtering.blacklist). They will not affect your health and will not show up in the Food Book. The whitelist (filtering.whitelist) is empty, so the blacklist is active. If anything is ever added to the whitelist, only those foods count and the blacklist is ignored.[3]

Tip: In this pack your food list is not reset when you die, because miscellaneous.resetOnDeath is false. Your bonus hearts are safe.[3]

Eating outside survival mode is also tracked, since miscellaneous.limitProgressionToSurvival is false.[3]

How does Spice of Life: Carrot Edition work?

5 parts

Spice of Life: Carrot Edition has no machines, multiblocks, power or fluids to set up. Its whole system is about your food list: every unique food you eat is tracked, and hitting milestones permanently raises your max health. Here is how that works in this pack.[2][3]

Milestones and hearts

You start with milestones.baseHearts set to 10 hearts. Each time your count of unique foods reaches a new milestone, you gain milestones.heartsPerMilestone hearts, which is 2 in this pack. Both values match the mod defaults.[3]

The milestones themselves live in milestones.milestones. This pack uses 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 unique foods. The list must be in ascending order, and adding more entries lets players earn more hearts.[3]

When you reach a milestone, the game tells you that you gained hearts. Once you pass the last one, you get a message that your desire to seek unique foods is finally satisfied, and you cannot gain any more health from new foods. Before that, you can check how many more foods you need for your next increase.[2]

Which foods count

A food only counts toward milestones if it gives at least filtering.minimumFoodValue hunger, measured in half drumsticks. The pack keeps the default of 1. Foods below the minimum are treated as not nourishing enough, and their tooltip says eating them has no noticeable effect on your health.[2][3]

Foods in filtering.blacklist don't affect your health and don't show up in the food book. This pack blacklists Biomass from Oritech and Fluorescent Jelly from Cognition.[3]

filtering.whitelist works the other way around. If it contains anything, the blacklist is ignored and only the foods on the whitelist count. In this pack the whitelist is empty, so the blacklist is the one in use.[3]

Survival only and death

miscellaneous.limitProgressionToSurvival is false in this pack. That means foods eaten outside survival mode, such as in creative or adventure, are still tracked and still count toward progression.[3]

miscellaneous.resetOnDeath is also false. Dying does not wipe your food list, so you keep your bonus hearts.[3]

The Food Book

The Food Book is your window into all of this. Its Overview page shows Foods Tasted and Hearts Gained, and hovering over them gives your last milestone, your next milestone, how many more foods you need, and the total number of foods. It also lists foods you have already tasted and foods you have not yet tried.[2]

Its Configuration page shows how many foods are blacklisted and whitelisted, the minimum food value, how many foods are nourishing enough to improve your health, and how many of the boring ones you have eaten.[2]

A cheap shapeless recipe, so you can grab one early.

Tooltips, commands and display options

Food tooltips tell you where each food stands. Possible states are not yet eaten, eaten and helped add hearts, no noticeable effect because it is too cheap, or disabled because it is blacklisted or missing from the whitelist.[2]

The mod also has commands to reset your food list, to synchronize it, and to see how many unique foods you have eaten. Applying them to other players needs the right permissions. The sources here don't give the command syntax.[2]

The mod's settings screen also has options to toggle the food tooltip, milestone sounds, milestone and intermediate particles, the progress display above the hotbar, and whether uneaten foods are shown.[2]

How do you progress through Spice of Life: Carrot Edition?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

The sources here don't show a tier ladder for Spice of Life: Carrot Edition in this pack. The only in-pack recipe they confirm for the mod is the Food Book, so that's the one crafting step to know about.[5]

The Food Book is a shapeless recipe, so you can place its ingredients anywhere on the crafting grid. Here's the exact in-pack recipe:[5]

Shapeless, so the ingredients can go in any arrangement.

Which Spice of Life: Carrot Edition config options matter?

4 parts

Spice of Life: Carrot Edition rewards you with extra hearts for eating a variety of foods. Most of what you'll want to know lives in the server config, and the client config only changes how milestones look and feel.[3][6]

Heart progression

  • milestones.baseHearts is 10 in this pack, the same as the mod default. This is how many hearts you start with.[3]
  • milestones.heartsPerMilestone is 2 in this pack, also the same as the mod default. This is how many hearts you gain for each new milestone.[3]
  • milestones.milestones is set to 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 unique foods in this pack. Each number is a milestone, and adding more entries would let you earn more hearts. The mod default for this list isn't shown in the sources, so I can't say whether the pack changed it.[3]
  • filtering.minimumFoodValue is 1 in this pack, matching the mod default. A food has to restore at least that much hunger, measured in half drumsticks, to count toward milestones.[3]

Which foods count

The filtering.blacklist in this pack contains Biomass and Fluorescent Jelly. Foods on that list don't affect your health and don't show up in the food book.[3]

The filtering.whitelist is empty here. If you ever put anything in it, the blacklist is ignored and only the foods on the whitelist count.[3]

Death and game modes

Client-side display options

All of these are on in this pack. [[config:config/solcarrot-client.toml#milestone celebration.shouldPlayMilestoneSounds]] plays a ding when you hit a milestone. [[config:config/solcarrot-client.toml#milestone celebration.shouldSpawnMilestoneParticles]] spawns particles at a milestone, and [[config:config/solcarrot-client.toml#milestone celebration.shouldSpawnIntermediateParticles]] spawns them whenever you try a new food.[6]

miscellaneous.isFoodTooltipEnabled makes food tooltips show whether you've eaten that food. miscellaneous.shouldShowUneatenFoods makes the food book list foods you haven't eaten as well. miscellaneous.shouldShowProgressAboveHotbar shows milestone messages above the hotbar instead of in chat.[6]

Tip: If the milestone messages feel spammy in chat, you won't need to change anything. This pack already shows them above the hotbar.[6]
