What is Spice of Life: Carrot Edition?
Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide
Spice of Life: Carrot Edition is part of this pack, and the version you get is 1.16.5. It has been in the pack since release 1.22 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the mod list rather than a recent addition.[1]
Unverified I don't have a confirmed description of what the mod does in this pack. There's no platform page or in-jar guidebook to draw on, so I won't guess at its mechanics, config values or recipes. The data I have also shows no quests involving the mod, and it isn't on the ATM Star path, so it doesn't look like a progression gate. Check in-game before relying on any specific behavior.
How do you get started with Spice of Life: Carrot Edition?
4 parts
Spice of Life: Carrot Edition rewards you for eating a variety of food. Every new food you taste counts towards milestones, and each milestone gives you extra max health. So your first steps are simple: get the book that tracks your progress, then start tasting everything you can.[2][3]
Step 1: Craft the Food Book
The first thing to make is the Food Book. It is the mod's only craftable in this pack's recipe list, and it is how you see what you have eaten and what you have not.[2][4]
A shapeless recipe, so the layout in the crafting grid does not matter.
Open the book and you get an overview with your foods tasted and hearts gained. It also lists the foods you have already tasted and the ones you have not tried yet. Its configuration page shows how many foods are nourishing enough to improve your health, and how many are blacklisted or whitelisted.[2]
Step 2: Eat different foods
What counts is unique foods, so eating the same thing again and again does nothing for your health. A food you have not eaten yet shows a tooltip asking what it tastes like. A food that is too weak shows a message that it is not nourishing enough to improve your health.[2]
In this pack, a food only counts if it provides at least 1 hunger point, measured in half drumsticks. That is set by filtering.minimumFoodValue, and it matches the mod default.[3]
Then hit the milestones
The pack's values are below. Reaching a milestone shows a message that you gained hearts.[2][3]
- You start with 10 hearts (milestones.baseHearts), the same as the mod default.[3]
- Each milestone gives you 2 hearts (milestones.heartsPerMilestone), also the mod default.[3]
- The milestones are at 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 unique foods (milestones.milestones).[3]
After the last milestone, the mod tells you that you cannot gain any more health from trying new foods.[2]
Good to know early
- Dying does not wipe your food list here, because miscellaneous.resetOnDeath is false. Your bonus hearts are safe.[3]
- Food eaten outside survival mode is tracked too, since miscellaneous.limitProgressionToSurvival is false.[3]
- The blacklist (filtering.blacklist) and whitelist (filtering.whitelist) are both empty, so no food is excluded by those lists.[3]
How does Spice of Life: Carrot Edition work?
5 parts
Spice of Life: Carrot Edition is about what you eat. It keeps a list of the unique foods you have tried, and as that list grows you reach milestones that raise your max health. Eating the same thing over and over does not move you forward, so variety is the whole game.[2][3]
Milestones and hearts
In this pack you start with 10 hearts (milestones.baseHearts), which is the mod default. Each milestone you reach gives you 2 more hearts (milestones.heartsPerMilestone), also the mod default.[3]
The milestones themselves are the number of unique foods you need to have eaten. This pack sets milestones.milestones to 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25. The list must be in ascending order, and adding more entries lets you earn more hearts.[3]
When you hit a milestone you get a chat message telling you how many hearts you gained. Once you pass the last one, the mod tells you your desire to seek unique foods is finally satisfied, and you cannot gain any more health from trying new foods.[2]
Which foods count
Not every food counts. A food has to provide a minimum hunger value to count towards milestones, set by filtering.minimumFoodValue. In this pack that is 1, measured in half drumsticks, which matches the mod default. Foods below the threshold are called boring or cheap foods, and eating them has no noticeable effect on your health.[2][3]
Two lists let you control the rest. Foods in filtering.blacklist do not affect your health and do not show up in the food book. If filtering.whitelist contains anything, the blacklist is ignored and only the foods on the whitelist count. Both lists are empty in this pack.[2][3]
Survival only and death
- miscellaneous.limitProgressionToSurvival is false in this pack. If it were true, foods eaten outside survival mode (creative or adventure, for example) would not be tracked.[3]
- miscellaneous.resetOnDeath is false in this pack, so dying does not wipe your food list or your bonus hearts. If it were turned on, you would lose all of your bonus hearts on death.[3]
The Food Book
The Food Book is your window into all of this. Its overview page shows how many foods you have tasted, how many hearts you have gained, your last and next milestone, and how many more foods you need to reach the next one. It also lists the foods you have already tasted and the ones you have not tried yet.[2]
A shapeless recipe, so the layout does not matter.
The book also has a configuration page. It shows how many foods are nourishing enough to improve your health, how many boring foods you have eaten, the minimum food value, and how many foods the blacklist and whitelist affect.[2]
Tooltips and commands
Food tooltips tell you where a food stands. A food you have not eaten yet says so. An eaten food either assisted in adding hearts or had no noticeable effect. Foods that are too cheap, blacklisted, or missing from an active whitelist get a tooltip explaining why they cannot improve your health.[2]
The mod also has food list commands for checking how many unique foods you have eaten, resetting the list and synchronizing it. Applying them to other players needs permissions. There are display options too, such as the food tooltip, progress above the hotbar, milestone sounds and particles.[2]
How do you progress through Spice of Life: Carrot Edition?
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
The sources here don't show a tier ladder for Spice of Life: Carrot Edition in this pack. The only in-pack recipe they confirm for the mod is the Food Book, so that's the one crafting step to know about.[5]
The Food Book is a shapeless recipe, so you can place its ingredients anywhere on the crafting grid. Here's the exact in-pack recipe:[5]
Which Spice of Life: Carrot Edition config options matter?
2 parts
Most of what you will want to tweak lives in two files. The server file sets how the heart progression works, and the client file sets how it looks and sounds for you. The values below are exactly what this pack ships with.[3][6]
Server settings (progression)
- milestones.baseHearts is 10, the number of hearts you start with. That matches the mod default of 10.[3]
- milestones.heartsPerMilestone is 2, the hearts you gain for each new milestone. That also matches the mod default of 2.[3]
- milestones.milestones is [5,10,15,20,25]. Each number is how many unique foods you need to eat to unlock a milestone, in ascending order. Adding more entries lets you earn more hearts.[3]
- filtering.minimumFoodValue is 1, the minimum hunger value (in half drumsticks) a food must give to count. That matches the mod default of 1.[3]
- filtering.blacklist and filtering.whitelist are both empty. Foods on the blacklist would not affect your health or show up in the food book. If the whitelist contains anything, the blacklist is ignored and only foods from the whitelist count.[3]
- miscellaneous.resetOnDeath is false, so dying does not wipe your food list or your bonus hearts.[3]
- miscellaneous.limitProgressionToSurvival is false, so foods eaten outside survival mode (creative or adventure, for example) are tracked and count towards progression.[3]
Client settings (display and feedback)
- [[config:config/solcarrot-client.toml#milestone celebration.shouldPlayMilestoneSounds]] is true, so reaching a new milestone plays a ding sound.[6]
- [[config:config/solcarrot-client.toml#milestone celebration.shouldSpawnMilestoneParticles]] is true, so reaching a milestone spawns particles. [[config:config/solcarrot-client.toml#milestone celebration.shouldSpawnIntermediateParticles]] is also true, so trying a new food spawns particles too.[6]
- miscellaneous.shouldShowProgressAboveHotbar is true, so milestone messages show above the hotbar instead of in chat.[6]
- miscellaneous.isFoodTooltipEnabled is true, so food tooltips tell you whether you have eaten that food.[6]
- miscellaneous.shouldShowUneatenFoods is true, so the food book lists foods you have not eaten yet as well as the ones you have.[6]
