The mod tracks how many unique foods you have eaten. Reaching milestones can increase your max health, and the Food Book's stats show how many more foods you need until the next one. Once you reach the highest milestone, it tells you so, and you can't gain more health from trying new foods.^[3]

You start with the number of hearts set by milestones.baseHearts, which is 10 in this pack, the same as the mod default. Each time the count of unique foods you've eaten reaches a new milestone, you gain extra hearts.^[4]

The pack changed the reward. milestones.heartsPerMilestone is 3 here, while the mod default is 2. So each milestone is worth more than in a default install.^[4]

The milestones come from milestones.milestones, a list of unique-food counts in ascending order. Which foods count

Not every food counts. A food has to provide a minimum hunger value, set by filtering.minimumFoodValue and measured in half drumsticks. The pack raised this to 8 from the mod default of 1, so only fairly filling foods count towards milestones. A food that falls short is marked in its tooltip as not nourishing enough to improve your health, and eating it has no noticeable effect.^[3][4]

There are also two lists. Foods in filtering.blacklist won't affect your health or show up in the food book. If filtering.whitelist contains anything, the blacklist is ignored and only foods on the whitelist count. Both lists are empty in this pack, so the hunger threshold is the only filter. Death and game modes

miscellaneous.resetOnDeath is true in this pack. When you die, your food list resets and you lose all your bonus hearts, so you'll need to work up the milestones again.^[4]
