What is Spice of Life: Carrot Edition?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide

Spice of Life: Carrot Edition is part of this pack, and the version you get is 1.16.5. It has been in the pack since release 1.22 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the mod list rather than a recent addition.[1]

Unverified I don't have a confirmed description of what the mod does in this pack. There's no platform page or in-jar guidebook to draw on, so I won't guess at its mechanics, config values or recipes. The data I have also shows no quests involving the mod, and it isn't on the ATM Star path, so it doesn't look like a progression gate. Check in-game before relying on any specific behavior.

How do you get started with Spice of Life: Carrot Edition?

3 parts

Spice of Life: Carrot Edition rewards you for eating a wide variety of foods. Each new food you taste counts towards a milestone, and each milestone gives you bonus hearts. The first thing to make is the Food Book, because it shows you exactly how you're doing.[2][3]

Step 1: Craft the Food Book

Food BookMod recipe

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: solcarrot:food_book

A shapeless recipe, so the layout in the crafting grid doesn't matter.

The book has an Overview page with your Foods Tasted and Hearts Gained, plus a list of foods you've already tasted and foods you haven't tried yet. It also has a Configuration page that shows how many foods are blacklisted or whitelisted and the minimum food value in use.[2]

Step 2: Know this pack's numbers

The pack changes two of the mod's defaults, so don't rely on what you may remember from other packs. The minimum food value is set to 8 in filtering.minimumFoodValue (the mod default is 1), measured in half drumsticks. A food that provides less than this won't count towards milestones. Hearts per milestone is 3 in milestones.heartsPerMilestone (the mod default is 2).[3]

You start with 10 hearts, set by milestones.baseHearts, which is the mod default. The first milestones are at 25 and 50 unique foods, and the full list of milestones is set in milestones.milestones.[3]

Step 3: Start tasting

  1. Open the Food Book and check the Overview to see how many foods you've tasted and how many more you need for the next milestone.[2]
  2. Check food tooltips. A food you haven't tried says so, and a food that is not nourishing enough to improve your health is flagged as well.[2]
  3. Eat each new food at least once. When you hit a milestone you get a message and the extra hearts.[2][3]
  4. Check the Not Yet Tried list in the book to see what you're still missing.[2]
Watch out: In this pack, miscellaneous.resetOnDeath is true, so dying resets your food list and you lose all your bonus hearts. Be careful once you've built up some progress.[3]

filtering.blacklist and filtering.whitelist are both empty in this pack. Foods on the blacklist don't affect your health and don't show up in the food book. If you ever fill the whitelist, the blacklist is ignored and only the foods on the whitelist count. miscellaneous.limitProgressionToSurvival is false, so eating in other game modes is tracked too.[3]

How does Spice of Life: Carrot Edition work?

7 parts

Spice of Life: Carrot Edition doesn't work like a machine mod. The sources describe a food-tracking system: the mod remembers which unique foods you've eaten and rewards you with extra max health when you hit milestones. Here's how that works in this pack.[2][3]

Milestones and hearts

You start with 10 hearts, set by milestones.baseHearts. Each milestone is a number of unique foods you need to have eaten. In this pack the first milestone is at 25 unique foods and the next is at 50, and the list in milestones.milestones keeps going in ascending order after that. Adding more entries to that list would let you earn more hearts.[3]

Every milestone you reach gives you 3 hearts. The pack changed milestones.heartsPerMilestone from the mod default of 2, so you earn more per milestone here than the mod normally gives.[3]

The mod tells you when it happens: a message says you've gained hearts, and once you've passed the last milestone you get a message that your desire to seek unique foods is finally satisfied. After that you can't gain more health from new foods.[2]

Which foods count

Not every food counts. A food has to restore at least the value in filtering.minimumFoodValue, measured in half drumsticks. The pack set this to 8, up from the mod default of 1. Foods below that line are treated as not nourishing enough, and eating them has no noticeable effect on your health.[2][3]

The item tooltips tell you where a food stands. They show whether it's nourishing enough, whether you've already eaten it, and whether it's disabled by a list.[2]

Blacklist and whitelist

filtering.blacklist holds foods that won't affect your health and won't show up in the food book. filtering.whitelist works the other way: if it contains anything, the blacklist is ignored and only foods on the whitelist count. In this pack both lists are empty.[3]

Death and game modes

miscellaneous.resetOnDeath is true in this pack, so dying resets your food list and you lose all your bonus hearts.[3]

Watch out: Dying wipes your food list and every bonus heart you earned from it, so don't take risks late in your progression.[3]

miscellaneous.limitProgressionToSurvival is false, so foods eaten outside survival mode (creative or adventure, for example) are still tracked and count toward progression.[3]

The Food Book

The Food Book is your window into all of this. Its overview shows foods tasted and hearts gained, plus your last and next milestone and how many more foods you need. It also has lists of foods already tasted and foods not yet tried, and a configuration page. That page shows how many foods the blacklist and whitelist affect, how many foods are nourishing enough to improve your health, and how many of the boring ones you've eaten.[2]

Recipe id: solcarrot:food_book

This is a shapeless crafting recipe, so the ingredients can go anywhere in the grid.

Commands

The mod's text shows food list commands to reset your list, check how many unique foods you've eaten and how many more you need for the next milestone, and synchronize the list. Applying a command to other players needs permissions. Without them you get an error message.[2]

Display options

The mod also has display options named Enable Food Tooltip, Enable Milestone Sounds, Show Progress Above Hotbar, Show Uneaten Foods, Enable Intermediate Particles and Enable Milestone Particles.[2]

How do you progress through Spice of Life: Carrot Edition?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

The sources here don't show a tier ladder for Spice of Life: Carrot Edition in this pack. The only in-pack recipe they confirm for the mod is the Food Book, so that's the one crafting step to know about.[5]

The Food Book is a shapeless recipe, so you can place its ingredients anywhere on the crafting grid. Here's the exact in-pack recipe:[5]
