What is Spice of Life: Carrot Edition?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide

Spice of Life: Carrot Edition is part of this pack, and the version you get is 1.16.5. It has been in the pack since release 1.22 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the mod list rather than a recent addition.[1]

Unverified I don't have a confirmed description of what the mod does in this pack. There's no platform page or in-jar guidebook to draw on, so I won't guess at its mechanics, config values or recipes. The data I have also shows no quests involving the mod, and it isn't on the ATM Star path, so it doesn't look like a progression gate. Check in-game before relying on any specific behavior.

How do you get started with Spice of Life: Carrot Edition?

3 parts

Spice of Life: Carrot Edition rewards you for eating a variety of foods. Each new unique food you try moves you toward a milestone, and every milestone you reach gives you extra max health. You start with 10 hearts, set by milestones.baseHearts, so the whole thing is about eating something new as often as you can.[2][3]

Step 1: Craft the Food Book

The first thing to make is the Food Book. It is your tracker for everything the mod does, and you can make it right at the start of the pack.[2][4]

Food BookMod recipe

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: solcarrot:food_book

It is a shapeless recipe, so the layout in the crafting grid does not matter.

Open the book and the Overview page shows how many foods you have tasted, how many hearts you have gained, your last milestone, your next milestone and how many more foods you need to reach it. There are also lists of foods you have already tasted and foods you have not tried yet.[2]

Step 2: Eat something new, as often as you can

In this pack the first milestone is 5 unique foods, the next is 10 and then 15, and the list keeps climbing from there. The pack changed the reward: each milestone gives you 1 heart instead of the mod default of 2.[3]

The full list of milestones is set in milestones.milestones and the reward in milestones.heartsPerMilestone. Once you pass the last milestone, the mod tells you that you cannot gain any more health from trying new foods.[2][3]

What counts and what does not

Tip: Food tooltips can tell you whether a food has been eaten yet. An untried food says it is not yet eaten, a tasted one says it assisted in adding hearts, and a weak food is flagged as not nourishing enough. Check the tooltip or the Food Book before you eat, so you do not waste a new food.[2]

How does Spice of Life: Carrot Edition work?

6 parts

Spice of Life: Carrot Edition has no machines, multiblocks, power or fluids. The whole mod is one system: it tracks how many different foods you have eaten, and every milestone you reach raises your max health. Here is how that works in this pack.[2][3]

Hearts and milestones

You start with milestones.baseHearts set to 10 hearts, which matches the mod default. Each time your count of unique foods reaches a milestone, you gain hearts, and the game tells you with a message that starts "What a unique flavor!".[2][3]

The pack changed the reward. milestones.heartsPerMilestone is 1 here, while the mod default is 2. So every milestone gives you 1 heart in this pack, not the 2 you may have seen elsewhere.[3]

The milestones are the numbers of unique foods you need to have eaten, set in milestones.milestones. The list starts like this:[3]

  • 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 for the early ones.[3]
  • 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 as the steps get bigger.[3]
  • The list keeps going with larger gaps after that. Check the config file for the full list and the final milestone.[3]

Until you hit the last milestone, the mod tells you how many more foods you need to increase your max health. Once you pass it, you are told that you sadly cannot gain any more health from trying new foods.[2]

Which foods count

Not every food counts. filtering.minimumFoodValue is 1 in this pack (the mod default is also 1), measured in half drumsticks. A food has to provide at least that much hunger to count towards milestones. Foods below the minimum show a tooltip saying they are not nourishing enough to improve your health, and eating them has no noticeable effect.[2][3]

You can also filter foods by hand. Foods on the filtering.blacklist don't affect your health and don't show up in the food book. If the filtering.whitelist contains anything, the blacklist is ignored and only the foods on the whitelist count. In this pack both lists are empty, so every food above the minimum value counts.[2][3]

Foods that are blocked this way get their own tooltip. It says either that the food is in the blacklist or that it is not in the whitelist, and in both cases it cannot improve your health.[2]

Survival only, and death

miscellaneous.limitProgressionToSurvival is true in this pack. Foods you eat in other game modes, such as creative or adventure, are not tracked and do not count towards progression.[3]

miscellaneous.resetOnDeath is false, so dying does not wipe your food list or your bonus hearts.[3]

The Food Book

The Food Book is your way to see all of this in the game. It has an Overview page showing the foods you have tasted and the hearts you have gained. Hovering shows your previous and next milestone and how many foods you still need. It also has lists of foods you have already tasted and foods you have not tried yet, plus a configuration page. That page shows the minimum food value, how many foods are blacklisted or whitelisted, and how many of the nourishing and non-nourishing foods you have eaten.[2]

Crafting Shapeless

A shapeless recipe, so the ingredients can go anywhere in the grid.

Tooltips and feedback

Food items get a tooltip that tells you whether a nourishing food has been eaten yet. An uneaten one says "Not yet eaten! What does it taste like?", and an eaten one says it assisted in adding hearts.[2]

The mod also has options for the food tooltip, milestone sounds, milestone and intermediate particles, showing progress above the hotbar, and showing uneaten foods.[2]

Food list commands

The mod includes commands that report how many unique foods you have eaten, reset the food list ("Food list reset!") and synchronize it ("Food list synchronized!"). Applying them to other players needs permissions, and without them the mod tells you that you lack the permissions necessary.[2]

How do you progress through Spice of Life: Carrot Edition?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

The sources here don't show a tier ladder for Spice of Life: Carrot Edition in this pack. The only in-pack recipe they confirm for the mod is the Food Book, so that's the one crafting step to know about.[5]

The Food Book is a shapeless recipe, so you can place its ingredients anywhere on the crafting grid. Here's the exact in-pack recipe:[5]

Shapeless, so the ingredients can go in any arrangement.

Which Spice of Life: Carrot Edition config options matter?

3 parts

Good news: Spice of Life: Carrot Edition only has a handful of options, and the pack changes just one of them from the mod default. That one is milestones.heartsPerMilestone, so it's worth knowing before you start chasing new foods.[3]

Server settings

These live in solcarrot-server.toml and control how hearts and progression work.[3]

Food filtering

Both filtering.blacklist and filtering.whitelist are empty in this pack, so every food that meets the minimum value counts.[3]

Tip: If you ever put anything in the whitelist, the blacklist is ignored and only the foods on the whitelist count. Pick one list and stick with it.[3]

Client settings

These live in solcarrot-client.toml and only affect what you see and hear. Everything here is switched on in this pack.[6]

  • [[config:config/solcarrot-client.toml#milestone celebration.shouldPlayMilestoneSounds]] plays a ding when you reach a new milestone.[6]
  • [[config:config/solcarrot-client.toml#milestone celebration.shouldSpawnMilestoneParticles]] spawns particles when you reach a new milestone, and [[config:config/solcarrot-client.toml#milestone celebration.shouldSpawnIntermediateParticles]] spawns particles whenever you try a new food.[6]
  • miscellaneous.isFoodTooltipEnabled makes food tooltips show whether you've eaten that food yet.[6]
  • miscellaneous.shouldShowUneatenFoods makes the food book list foods you haven't eaten as well as the ones you have.[6]
  • miscellaneous.shouldShowProgressAboveHotbar shows milestone messages above the hotbar. If you turn it off, they appear in chat instead.[6]
