What is Spice of Life: Carrot Edition?
Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide
Spice of Life: Carrot Edition is part of this pack, and the version you get is 1.16.5. It has been in the pack since release 1.22 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the mod list rather than a recent addition.[1]
Unverified I don't have a confirmed description of what the mod does in this pack. There's no platform page or in-jar guidebook to draw on, so I won't guess at its mechanics, config values or recipes. The data I have also shows no quests involving the mod, and it isn't on the ATM Star path, so it doesn't look like a progression gate. Check in-game before relying on any specific behavior.
How do you get started with Spice of Life: Carrot Edition?
3 parts
Spice of Life: Carrot Edition rewards you for variety. Every new food you eat counts as a unique taste, and when you reach a milestone you gain extra hearts. Your first job is to get the tool that tracks all of it.[2]
Step 1: Craft the Food Book
The Food Book is the one item you need to start. It is a shapeless crafting recipe, so the ingredients can go anywhere in the grid.[3]
Shapeless crafting recipe from the mod, used as is in this pack.
Step 2: Open it and read the Overview
The book's Overview page shows how many foods you have tasted and how many hearts you have gained. Hovering over the stats tells you your last milestone, your next milestone, how many more foods you need, and how many hearts each milestone gives. Once you hit the top milestone, it tells you that the highest milestone is reached.[2]
The book also lists foods under "Already Tasted" and "Not Yet Tried", so you can see what is left to eat.[2]
Then eat as many different foods as you can
Not every food counts. Foods that are not nourishing enough will not improve your health, because each food must provide a minimum hunger value to count towards milestones. Food tooltips tell you where a food stands: an uneaten food that counts shows "Not yet eaten! What does it taste like?", and a food that does not count says so, with the reason.[2]
- Foods that are not nourishing enough: "This food is not nourishing enough to improve your health."[2]
- Foods on the blacklist: they cannot improve your health.[2]
- Foods missing from the whitelist, if one is in use: they cannot improve your health either.[2]
When you reach a milestone you get a message telling you how many hearts you gained. After the last milestone, the mod tells you that your desire to seek unique foods is finally satisfied and you cannot gain more health from new foods.[2]
Unverified The exact milestone thresholds, the hearts you start with, the hearts per milestone and the minimum food value are set in the mod's config. The sources here do not show those values for this pack, and no quests in this pack cover the mod, so check the Food Book in game for your current numbers.
How does Spice of Life: Carrot Edition work?
4 parts
Spice of Life: Carrot Edition has no machines, multiblocks, power or fluids to set up. Its one system is a food list that remembers which foods you have eaten, and it rewards you for variety. Here is what the sources show about how that works.[2]
Milestones and hearts
The mod counts the unique foods you have eaten. When you reach a milestone you are told "What a unique flavor!" and gain hearts. The mod also tells you how many more unique foods you need before your max health goes up again.[2]
There is a ceiling. Once you reach the highest milestone, the mod says you cannot gain any more health from trying new foods, and a message tells you your desire to seek unique foods is finally satisfied.[2]
The mod has options named Base Hearts, Hearts per Milestone and Milestones, which control the heart rewards. It also has options for milestone sounds, milestone particles, intermediate particles and a progress display above the hotbar.[2]
Which foods count
Not every food improves your health. A food has to provide a minimum hunger value to count towards milestones. A food below that value is marked in its tooltip as not nourishing enough to improve your health. Eating it has no noticeable effect on your progress.[2]
The mod also has a Blacklist and a Whitelist. A blacklisted food cannot improve your health. If the whitelist is in use, any food not on it cannot improve your health either. The whitelist option is labelled as disabling the blacklist, so the two are not used together.[2]
Food tooltips tell you where each food stands. A nourishing food you have not tried says "Not yet eaten! What does it taste like?". Once you have eaten it, the tooltip says it assisted in adding hearts. You can switch the food tooltip off with the Enable Food Tooltip option.[2]
The Food Book
The Food Book is how you check your progress. It has an Overview page showing Foods Tasted and Hearts Gained. Its tooltips show your last milestone, your next milestone, how many foods remain until the next one, and the total number of foods.[2]
The book also lists the foods you have Already Tasted and the ones that are Not Yet Tried. A Configuration page shows how many foods are nourishing enough to improve your health, how many of the boring ones you have eaten, the minimum food value, and how many foods the blacklist or whitelist affects.[2]
Food list commands
The mod has a food list command with messages for resetting the list, showing its size and synchronizing it. The size message tells you how many unique foods you have eaten. Applying the command to other players needs permissions, and without them you get a refusal message. The exact command syntax is not shown in these sources.[2]
There is also a Reset on Death option. The sources show its name but not whether it is switched on in the pack.[2]
Unverified The pack's actual values for base hearts, hearts per milestone, the milestone thresholds and the minimum food value are set in the mod's config. The sources here do not show those values or any pack changes to them, so check the config in your own install.
How do you progress through Spice of Life: Carrot Edition?
Spice of Life: Carrot Edition has one crafted item that the sources here confirm in this pack: the Food Book. It comes from a shapeless crafting recipe, and the pack lists it as the mod's own recipe, so the pack has not replaced it with a custom one.[3]
The Food Book is the only crafted item of Spice of Life: Carrot Edition shown in the pack's recipe dump.
Because the sources show only this one recipe, there is no tier ladder to break down. No other recipes for the mod's items are listed.[3]
Unverified How this mod fits into the pack's progression, such as a quest chapter or a tier it unlocks, is not shown in the sources here. The pack's quest book is where that would be told, and the sources here show no quests for this mod.
