What is Lootr?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mons 1.3.0 guide

Lootr makes sure nobody misses out on loot. Every container that has a loot table gets its own inventory for each player who opens it, so there is no race to be first into a structure and you never open a loot chest and find someone's left-over trash.[1]

It covers chests, trapped chests, barrels, shulkers and minecarts that have a loot table. These containers look different from the vanilla ones, and their colour changes from gold to blue once you have opened that container.[1]

The pack ships the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1, version 1.11.38.125. The mod is currently required on both the server and the client.[1][2]

Good to know

  • Lootr only changes the containers. The loot inside is generated the same way vanilla chests generate it.[1]
  • By default, if you try to break a Lootr container you get a warning that all containers are per-player. You can still break one while sneaking, unless that option is disabled in the configuration.[1]
  • If a container from another mod does not convert, that mod may be filling it with items by hand instead of using a loot table, and Lootr cannot detect a loot table in that case.[1]
  • Loot containers that were already opened in an existing world will not be converted when the mod is added, because vanilla loot generation removes the loot table and Lootr has no way to find that information.[1]
  • To make a starter chest for everyone, fill a vanilla chest, stand on it and run the /lootr custom command. This needs operator privileges.[1]
Watch out: Removing Lootr from a world also removes every Lootr container in it, and there is currently no way to undo the conversion. Think twice before taking it out of a world you care about.[1]

How do you get started with Lootr?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Good news: Lootr doesn't ask you to build anything first. It changes how loot containers behave. Every container with a loot table (chests, trapped chests, barrels, shulkers and minecarts) gives each player their own inventory when they open it. Nobody races you to the loot, and you never find a chest someone else already picked clean.[1]

You can spot these containers by their look. They have a distinct appearance, and the colour changes from gold to blue once you've opened one. Lootr must be installed on both the server and the client, so if you play multiplayer, everyone needs it.[1]

Your first steps

  1. Find a Lootr container, such as a Loot Chest, a Loot Barrel or a Loot Shulker, and open it. The inventory you see is yours alone.[1][3]
  2. Look at the colour afterwards. Blue means you've already opened it, so you know not to go back.[1]
  3. Try the other container types. Lootr also has a Decorated Loot Pot, an item frame with loot and a minecart with a loot chest, and each has its own advancement.[3]

Advancements to chase

Lootr adds its own advancements, which make a handy checklist. The root one is about bringing instanced loot to your world. After that you can open your first Lootr chest, barrel, minecart, shulker box or trapped chest, loot an item from an item frame, and loot a decorated pot.[3]

  • Open 10, 25, 50 and then 100 Lootr containers.[3]
  • Open one of every Lootr container type.[3]
  • Brush all types of suspicious Lootr blocks, which come as suspicious sand and suspicious gravel.[3]
Tip: The mod's default is that trying to break a container shows a warning and a reminder that containers are per-player. This pack's own setting for that is unverified, so don't count on it.[1]

Unverified No crafting recipe for Lootr containers was found in the pack data, and no Lootr config file is included, so there is nothing to craft or tune for this mod.

How does Lootr work?

7 parts

Lootr changes how loot containers work: every player who opens one gets their own private inventory, so nobody misses out. This section covers how that works and how the pack has it set up. Lootr has to be installed on both the server and the client.[1]

Instanced loot containers

Any container with a loot table (chests, trapped chests, barrels, shulkers and minecarts) creates a separate inventory for each player who opens it. The containers look different from vanilla, and their colour changes from gold to blue once you have opened them. That makes it easy to see what you have already looted.[1]

The mod's blocks and entities include the Loot Chest, Loot Barrel, Loot Shulker, Decorated Loot Pot, Minecart with Loot Chest and Item Frame with Loot. It also adds suspicious sand and gravel that you brush, which show up as plain Sand and Gravel in the lang file.[4]

Lootr only changes the containers. The loot itself is generated exactly as vanilla chests generate it. To change what is inside, you need loot tables (usually data packs), not Lootr.[1]

How conversion works

Lootr swaps existing loot containers for its own versions. In this pack conversion is switched on (conversion.disable is false). Item frames that structures generate with items in them are converted to Lootr item frames (conversion.convert_item_frames). Elytra item frames become Lootr item frames with an elytra inside, not chests (conversion.convert_elytras_to_item_frames is true, conversion.convert_elytras_to_chests is false). Mineshaft chest minecarts are converted to standard loot chests (conversion.convert_mineshafts).[5]

conversion.randomise_seed is true in the pack. Loot is randomised per player instead of being identical for everyone from the same seed.[5]

Some containers will never convert. If a mod fills a container with items by hand instead of using a loot table, Lootr cannot find a table to convert. The "axe chest" in the vanilla Woodland Mansion has no loot table and is never converted either. Containers that were already opened before Lootr was added also stay as they are, because vanilla removes the loot table once a container is opened.[1]

The pack also lists these loot tables as problematic in whitelist.problematic_loot_tables: twilightforest:structures/stronghold_boss and atum:chests/pharaoh. The dimension and loot table whitelist and blacklist options are all empty, so no dimension or mod is excluded from conversion.[5]

Timing and saving

  • conversion.tick_delay is 20, the mod default. It is the delay between ticks, and a higher value makes containers slower to work out that they should refresh or decay.[5]
  • conversion.max_age is 18000, also the mod default. The config comment describes it as the maximum age for containers, with entries above it discarded, and notes it works out to fifteen minutes.[5]
  • conversion.save_mode is SMART. It saves container data files as ALWAYS does, but switches to WHEN_OPENED on Aternos and Exaroton.[5]
  • conversion.bypass_spawn_protection is true, so you can open Lootr containers inside spawn protection.[5]

Decay and refresh

Lootr has two optional systems for containers you do not want looted forever. With decay, a configurable time after a container is first opened, the next attempt to open it destroys the block. With refresh, the container regenerates its contents after a set time.[1]

Neither is active in this pack. decay.decay_all and refresh.refresh_all are false, and the dimension, loot table and mod id lists for both are empty. If you turn them on, the timers are decay.decay_value at 6,000 ticks (5 minutes) and refresh.refresh_value at 24,000 ticks (20 minutes). Both are the mod defaults. When a container decays it is removed, because decay.replace_when_decayed is false.[5]

Players are warned before a refresh or decay. notifications.notification_delay is 600 ticks (30 seconds), the maximum time left on a chest before the notification goes out. Notifications are enabled in the pack.[5]

Breaking containers

By default, a player who tries to break a container gets a warning that all containers are available per player. Players can still break them while sneaking, unless the option is disabled in the config.[1]

The pack leaves the breaking options at false: breaking.disable_break, breaking.enable_break, breaking.blast_immune and breaking.blast_resistant. With both blast options off, explosions are not specifically blocked from destroying Lootr chests. breaking.should_drop_player_loot is also false, so a broken chest does not drop your personal inventory contents.[5]

Redstone

power.power_comparators is true in the pack, so a comparator on a Lootr container outputs 1. If it were false, the output would be 0. power.trapped_custom is false, so custom inventories do not act like trapped chests when opened.[5]

Custom starter chests

You can make your own Lootr container. Place a vanilla chest and fill it with the items you want everyone to get. Then stand on it and run the /lootr custom command, which needs operator privileges. Custom inventories look like a chest.[1]

Watch out: Removing Lootr also removes every Lootr container from your world, and there is no way to undo the conversion. Think twice before dropping the mod from a world you want to keep.[1]

How do you progress through Lootr?

Lootr has no tier path that I can show you for this pack. The pack scripts available here that shape early progression never mention it. The after-cobble trade script swaps things like Stone, Cobblestone, Gravel and Sand for items from other mods, and none of those trades involve Lootr items.[6]

The hammer script is the same story. It builds a chain from Cobblestone to Gravel, then Dirt, then Sand, then Dust, and no Lootr item appears anywhere in it.[7]

Unverified The sources here show no Lootr quests, no Lootr recipes and no tiers for it, so I can't lay out a progression for the mod. If the pack sets anything up for it, it would be in the quest book chapters or the in-game recipe viewer, which these sources don't cover. This site does hold FTB Skies 2's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Which Lootr config options matter?

6 parts

Lootr has a common file, lootr-common.toml, for container behaviour, and a client file, lootr-client.toml, which holds the particle and texture options. Here are the options you're most likely to care about, and what the pack sets them to.[5][8]

Refreshing and decaying

The pack leaves refresh.refresh_all and decay.decay_all at false, so the setting that makes every chest refresh or decay after being trapped for the first time is off. The lists refresh.refresh_loot_tables, refresh.refresh_modids, refresh.refresh_dimensions, decay.decay_loot_tables, decay.decay_modids and decay.decay_dimensions are all empty. The option descriptions say that blank lists mean no chests refresh or decay.[5]

Breaking chests

The pack sets breaking.disable_break, breaking.enable_break, breaking.blast_immune and breaking.blast_resistant to false. breaking.should_drop_player_loot is false too, so a broken chest does not drop the contents of the player-specific inventory.[5]

Conversion

Blacklists and problem loot tables

The pack leaves the dimension, mod ID and loot table whitelist and blacklist options empty, including whitelist.dimension_blacklist and whitelist.loot_table_blacklist. The exception is whitelist.problematic_loot_tables, which lists loot tables whose conversion causes problems: twilightforest:structures/stronghold_boss and atum:chests/pharaoh.[5]

Redstone

power.power_comparators is true, so a comparator on a Lootr container gives an output of 1. power.trapped_custom is false.[5]

Client visuals

particles.unopened_particles is true, so particles spawn from containers you have not yet opened. textures.new_textures and textures.vanilla_textures are both false.[8]

Tip: If you switch on textures.vanilla_textures, previously opened chests will no longer render differently.[8]

What changed in Lootr between versions?

5 parts

FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Lootr 1.21.1-1.11.38.124, and the mod was first included in the pack in 1.0.1 or earlier. There are no pack changelog entries for Lootr, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs. They only list commit messages, so I'm keeping to what they say.[9]

1.11.38.124 (the version in this pack)

  • A small fix for a strange issue where getContainerAt returned something that wasn't a Container. The changelog puts "Fix" in quotes, so treat it as a workaround.[10]

1.11.37.122

  • You can now break pots with arrows.[11]
  • Hoppers are prevented from inserting into entities and blocks.[11]
  • Trying to insert into item frames now shows a message, including during emergency conversion. Item frames are also no longer converted while that feature is disabled.[11]
  • Decorated pots now properly handle minecraft:empty loot pool entries.[11]
  • A Create schematicannon duplication issue was fixed.[11]
  • lootr_minecart is now an alias of lootr_cart, and a trapped chest advancement entry appears in the changelog (no further detail is given).[11]

1.11.37.121 and 1.11.37.120

  • Item frames were fixed, and particles were made more customisable, with the new particle type color now actually used.[12]
  • A fix so directories are created properly.[13]

1.11.37.118 and 1.11.36.x

  • The block convert blacklist now actually works.[14]
  • The tag checker was fixed for NeoForge.[15]
  • Jade integration was improved for suspicious blocks, and the trophy is now cutout on all platforms.[16]

Earlier 1.21 builds

  • 1.21-1.10.35.96 mostly improved documentation, including an explanation of what the "converters" are used for.[17]
  • 1.21-1.10.35.91 fixed inverted logic for shulker boxes and ported the /lootr cclear command to 1.21.[18]
