What is Lootr?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mons 1.3.0 guide

Lootr makes sure nobody misses out on loot. Every container that has a loot table gets its own inventory for each player who opens it, so there is no race to be first into a structure and you never open a loot chest and find someone's left-over trash.[1]

It covers chests, trapped chests, barrels, shulkers and minecarts that have a loot table. These containers look different from the vanilla ones, and their colour changes from gold to blue once you have opened that container.[1]

The pack ships the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1, version 1.11.38.125. The mod is currently required on both the server and the client.[1][2]

Good to know

  • Lootr only changes the containers. The loot inside is generated the same way vanilla chests generate it.[1]
  • By default, if you try to break a Lootr container you get a warning that all containers are per-player. You can still break one while sneaking, unless that option is disabled in the configuration.[1]
  • If a container from another mod does not convert, that mod may be filling it with items by hand instead of using a loot table, and Lootr cannot detect a loot table in that case.[1]
  • Loot containers that were already opened in an existing world will not be converted when the mod is added, because vanilla loot generation removes the loot table and Lootr has no way to find that information.[1]
  • To make a starter chest for everyone, fill a vanilla chest, stand on it and run the /lootr custom command. This needs operator privileges.[1]
Watch out: Removing Lootr from a world also removes every Lootr container in it, and there is currently no way to undo the conversion. Think twice before taking it out of a world you care about.[1]

How do you get started with Lootr?

2 parts

Good news: there's nothing to craft to get started with Lootr. It changes the loot containers you already find in the world, so your first step is to go exploring and open them.[1]

Unverified No in-pack recipe or quest for Lootr's items was found in the sources, so there is no crafting order to follow for this mod.

What you will notice first

Every container with a loot table (chests, trapped chests, barrels, shulkers and minecarts) gives each player their own inventory. Nobody has to race you to a structure, and nobody can leave you their leftover junk.[1]

These containers also look different from normal ones. Their colour changes from gold to blue once you have opened them, so you can tell at a glance what you've already looted.[1]

What gets converted in this pack

The pack keeps conversion switched on for wooden chests (convert_wooden_chests), trapped chests (convert_trapped_chests), mineshaft chest minecarts (convert_mineshafts) and the Elytra item frame (convert_elytras). The Elytra frame becomes a loot chest with a guaranteed elytra.[3]

Containers don't decay or refresh on their own here. decay_all and refresh_all are both false, and the per-loot-table, per-mod and per-dimension lists are empty. Once you've opened a chest, it stays yours.[3]

Tip: Lootr is currently required on both the server and the client, so everyone playing needs it installed.[1]

The mod also has its own advancements, starting with opening your first instanced chest, barrel, minecart or shulker. They are a nice little checklist as you explore.[4]

How does Lootr work?

8 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.11 guide

Lootr doesn't add machines or power. It changes how loot containers work. Any container that has a loot table creates its own inventory for each player who opens it. You and your friends each get your own rewards from the same chest, so there's no race to reach a structure first and you'll never find someone else's leftover trash.[1]

The mod has to be installed on both the server and the client. You can't join a Lootr server without it on your side.[1]

Which containers get converted

Lootr only converts containers that use a loot table. These container types are supported:[1]

  • Chests and trapped chests[1]
  • Barrels[1]
  • Shulkers[1]
  • Minecarts[1]

Lootr doesn't change what loot you get. It only changes the containers. Loot is generated exactly the way vanilla chests generate it, and changing loot tables is outside what Lootr does.[1]

Watch out: Some containers never convert. The axe chest in the vanilla Woodland Mansion has no loot table, so it stays a normal chest. A modded container that is already full, or always holds the same items, is probably being filled directly by its mod rather than through a loot table. Lootr can't convert those either.[1]

Telling opened and unopened containers apart

Lootr containers look different from normal ones, so you can spot them in the world. Their colour changes from gold to blue once you've opened them, which makes it easy to see which chests in a structure you've already looted.[1]

There's a client-side option that makes containers use the vanilla look instead. If you turn it on, you lose the gold-to-blue hint that shows which containers you've already opened.[1]

Breaking Lootr containers

By default in the mod, trying to break a Lootr container just gives you a warning and a reminder that every container is per-player. You can still break one by sneaking while you break it, unless that option has been disabled in the config.[1]

Unverified The sources don't include this pack's Lootr config, so it's unconfirmed whether the pack keeps the mod's default breaking behaviour or changes it.

Decay, refresh and blacklists

Lootr has several options server owners can use, which is especially handy for dungeon mods. Specific loot tables, all loot tables from a particular mod, or whole dimensions can be blacklisted so their containers are never converted.[1]

Containers can also be set to decay based on their loot table. A set time after a container is first opened, the next person who tries to open it destroys the block instead. The opposite also exists: refreshing containers regenerate their contents once the set time has passed.[1]

Unverified It's unconfirmed whether this pack uses any blacklists, decay or refresh settings, or what timers it uses.

Custom starter chests

Lootr can also make custom per-player inventories that look like a Lootr chest. Place a vanilla chest, fill it with the items you want everyone to get, then stand on it and run /lootr custom. This command needs operator privileges, so it's mainly useful if you run your own server.[1]

Existing worlds and removing the mod

Lootr can convert containers in a world that already exists, with one catch. Loot containers that were already opened won't convert, because vanilla loot generation removes the container's loot table and Lootr can't recover it.[1]

Watch out: Removing Lootr also removes every container it converted, and the conversion can't be undone. Back up your world before you take the mod out.[1]

Why it helps your world

Every player gets their own loot from each structure, so it's worth exploring structures that other players already found instead of running off to generate new chunks. That keeps the world size down, which is nice on a shared server.[1]

Tracking your progress

Lootr has advancements to track your looting. You get one for opening your first Lootr chest, barrel, minecart and shulker, then more at 10, 25, 50 and 100 opened containers. There's also one for opening one of every type of Lootr container in the world.[5]

Unverified The sources don't say whether hoppers, pipes or other automation can pull items out of Lootr containers, or whose inventory they would pull from.

Which Lootr config options matter?

5 parts

Lootr gives every player their own copy of each loot container. In this pack the main settings live in disable and the neighbouring options in the common config file, plus a couple of cosmetic options in the client config. Here is how the pack sets them.[3][6]

Tip: The timer values in the pack's Lootr config match the defaults quoted in each option's own comment. Nothing in these files shows the pack changing a Lootr value from the mod default.[3]

Conversion

disable is false, so Lootr converts chests as normal. Wooden chests, trapped chests, mineshaft chest minecarts and the Elytra item frame are all converted, because convert_wooden_chests, convert_trapped_chests, convert_mineshafts and convert_elytras are all true.[3]

The extra-container and filter lists are all empty: additional_chests, additional_trapped_chests, dimension_blacklist, dimension_whitelist, loot_table_blacklist and loot_modid_blacklist. So no dimension or loot table is excluded by the config.[3]

Decay and refresh

decay_all and refresh_all are both false, and the decay and refresh lists for dimensions, loot tables, mod IDs and structures are empty. The file's own comments say a blank list means no chests decay or refresh.[3]

The timers are still set, in case you or a server owner turn decay or refresh on. decay_value is 6000 ticks (5 minutes) and refresh_value is 24000 ticks (20 minutes). notification_delay is 600 ticks (30 seconds), which is the maximum time left on a chest before a player gets a refresh or decay notification. Both disable_notifications and disable_message_styles are false.[3]

max_age is 18000 (fifteen minutes). Its comment notes that a value of 6000 gets corrected to 18000, so use 6001 or 5999 if you want that length.[3]

Breaking and explosions

The pack leaves all of the protection options off: disable_break, enable_break, enable_fake_player_break, blast_immune and blast_resistant are all false.[3]

Other options worth knowing

  • bypass_spawn_protection is true, so players can open Lootr containers inside spawn protection areas.[3]
  • randomise_seed is true, so loot is randomised per player instead of using the same seed for everyone.[3]
  • power_comparators is true, so a comparator on a Lootr container outputs 1.[3]
  • aggressive_mode is false. It is meant for when a huge quantity of containers is clogging the conversion system, and it may stop certain eligible chests from converting.[3]
  • check_world_border is false. The file says to enable it if you use a world border and suffer consistent TPS issues.[3]
  • report_unresolved_tables is false, so players are not told when they open a container whose loot table cannot be found.[3]

Client textures

In the client config, old_textures and vanilla_textures are both false, so you get the current Lootr look. Switching on vanilla textures stops previously opened chests from rendering differently.[6]
