What is Ars Elemental?

1 part

This pack includes Ars Elemental version 0.7.5.0.1, and it has been in the pack since FTB Skies 2 1.0.1 or earlier. The jar is built for Minecraft 1.21.1, and that is the version the rest of this guide describes.[1]

Where it shows up in progression

The only place the pack's quest book touches this mod is the "ars_nouveau" chapter. There, quest a quest in "?" has no title and asks you to obtain Mark of Mastery. It unlocks after another quest in the same chapter, so you reach it by working through the Ars Nouveau questline first.[2]

Unverified The sources I have don't describe what Ars Elemental adds in detail, what its progression looks like beyond that one quest, or whether it fits an ATM Star path. Treat anything beyond the version and the Mark of Mastery quest as unconfirmed for now.

How do you get started with Ars Elemental?

5 parts

Ars Elemental builds on Ars Nouveau. Many of its recipes are made at the enchanting apparatus or by imbuement, and they lean on Ars Nouveau essences. So your first goal is simple: get one key item, then branch out from it.[3]

Start with the Trinkets Pouch

The Trinkets Pouch is an ordinary crafting-table recipe, so it needs no apparatus. It is also worth making early, because the Spellcaster Bag recipe uses it as an ingredient.[3]

Get the Mark of Mastery

This is the item to aim for. The Mark of Mastery is made at the enchanting apparatus, and the in-game description tells you to combine the essences with the tribute. In the quest book it has its own quest, a quest in "?", in the ars_nouveau chapter, unlocked after an earlier quest in that chapter.[2][3][4]

Why start here? The full focus recipes and the elemental armor upgrades below all use the Mark of Mastery as an ingredient.[3]

Upgrade a lesser focus into a full focus

A full Focus of Air or Focus of Earth is made at the enchanting apparatus from the matching lesser focus plus a Mark of Mastery. That means you need a lesser focus first.[3]

Elemental armor

The elemental armor sets are made by upgrading Ars Nouveau magic armor, and the pack changed these upgrade recipes. Treat the armor as a mid-to-late goal. As an example, the air set absorbs some air-related damage and converts it into mana, and it highly reduces fall damage.[3][4]

How does Ars Elemental work?

6 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide

In the sources available here, Ars Elemental's mechanics come down to crafting stations, rituals, familiars, armor sets and spell glyphs. None of them describes machines with power, fluid or item handling. This section covers what the sources do explain.[5][6]

Where things get crafted

Most of the mod's special items are made at stations from Ars Nouveau. The Air Bangle and the Focus of Air come from the enchanting apparatus. The Acceleration Prism Lens and the Air Infused Turret come from imbuement. Simpler items like the Trinkets Pouch use ordinary crafting.[6]

Armor upgrades

The Aethermancer's armor pieces use their own upgrade recipe type, and the pack has changed those recipes. That covers the Aethermancer's Hat, Aethermancer's Robes, Aethermancer's Leggings and Aethermancer's Boots. The Slipstream Current Elevator recipe is also changed by the pack. Use the recipe blocks below rather than the mod's default recipes.[6]

Each elemental armor set has a set bonus, and the in-game tooltip shows it when you hold the set-info key. The air set absorbs some air-related damage and converts it into mana, and it highly reduces fall damage. The water set also converts damage into mana and refills your air if you're about to drown. The earth set gives food deep underground if you're about to starve. The fire set instantly clears fire.[5]

Rituals

The mod adds extra ritual tablets, such as Conjure Island: Archwood Forest. This one creates an island of grass and dirt in a circle around the ritual and converts the area to an Archwood Forest. The island has a radius of 7 blocks. Each Source Gem you augment the ritual with adds 1 to the radius. You also need to provide Source nearby while the blocks generate. Augmenting with an Elemental Archfruit makes it convert to a thematic forest instead.[5][6]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: ars_elemental:ritual_archwood_forest

The tablet is crafted from essences and any archwood log.

Familiars

Familiars are obtained by performing the Ritual of Binding near the matching creature. A Flarecannon Familiar increases the damage of Fire spells by 2 and reduces projectile-based spell costs by 20%. You can feed it a Magma Cream for a short Fire Resistance buff.[5]

A Siren Familiar increases the damage of Water spells by 2. It also gives the summoner Dolphin Grace II while in water.[5]

Enchantments and threads

  • Mirror Shield can only go on the Enchanter's Shield. It gives a 25% chance per level of reflecting a spell projectile while you block.[5]
  • Soulbound stops the enchanted item from being lost on death.[5]
  • The Shock thread makes damaging effects shock the target for a short duration before the effect resolves, and it inflicts Static Charged at tier 3.[5]
  • The Spore thread makes damaging effects poison the target or make it hungry for a short duration before the effect resolves.[5]
  • The Summon thread reduces Summon Sickness by 10% for each tier. From tier 2 it also slightly increases damage dealt by summoned creatures.[5]

Spell glyph quirks

  • Homing projectiles seek the nearest entity and act like a classic projectile when there is no valid target. Players are only targeted if you augment the glyph with Sensitive.[5]
  • Arc projectiles are affected by gravity, and each Pierce applied makes them bounce once when they hit the ground.[5]
  • Life Link shares damage you take with the target, and healing the target receives is shared with you. Sensitive reverses the direction, and Cut ends the link on both sides.[5]
  • Charm makes enemies fight for you as a temporary ally, with tamable mobs being tamed and wild animals falling in love. Each Amplify and damage dealt raises the success chance, and stronger mobs resist more.[5]
Tip: Levitating a mob takes an air focus. Wear one and cast a spell with Launch plus Extend Time.[5]

How do you progress through Ars Elemental?

3 parts

Ars Elemental builds on Ars Nouveau, so in this pack the quest book follows it inside the Ars Nouveau chapter. The sources show one Ars Elemental quest there, and it is a big checkpoint: the Mark of Mastery it asks for is an ingredient in the elemental foci and the elemental armor.[2][3]

The quest checkpoint

The quest a quest in "?" asks you to obtain the Mark of Mastery. It sits in the Ars Nouveau chapter and comes after another quest in that chapter, so you reach it by working through the Ars Nouveau questline first.[2]

You craft the Mark of Mastery at the Enchanting Apparatus. You then use it directly in the foci and armor recipes further down.[3]

Before the Mark of Mastery

A lot of the recipes shown for Ars Elemental do not use the mark at all, so you can start on these while you work toward it.[3]

After the Mark of Mastery

The mark is used directly in the recipes for the elemental foci. Each Focus of Fire, Earth or Air is an Enchanting Apparatus upgrade of its lesser version. The infused turrets are imbuement recipes built on those foci, for example the Fire Infused Turret from the Focus of Fire.[3]

The elemental armor sets need the mark too. Fire, Water, Earth and Air each come as hat, robes, leggings and boots, such as the Pyromancer's Robes and Aquamancer's Boots. They use a special armor upgrade recipe type, and the pack changed every one of them.[3]

How does Ars Elemental work with other mods?

5 parts

In this pack, Ars Elemental is tied closely to Ars Nouveau. The recipes that connect Ars Elemental to other mods all use Ars Nouveau items, such as the elemental essences, and most are made with Ars Nouveau crafting types like the Enchanting Apparatus, imbuement and glyph crafting. Vanilla items fill in the rest.[3]

Mark of Mastery: the gateway item

Mark of Mastery is the main bridge between the two mods. It is made at the Enchanting Apparatus from Ars Nouveau's essences and a Wilden Tribute, plus ars_elemental:anima_essence from Ars Elemental. The pack also has a quest in the Ars Nouveau chapter whose task is to obtain it: a quest in "?".[2][3]

Enchanting Apparatus (ars_nouveau)

Elemental armor builds on Ars Nouveau armor

The elemental armor sets (air, aqua, earth and fire) are upgrades of Ars Nouveau's magic armor pieces. Each upgrade uses the Mark of Mastery and the matching essence, for example Pyromancer's Robes for fire. The pack changed these armor upgrade recipes, so don't trust default-mod guides for them. The recipe below shows the exact in-pack version.[3]

Glyphs, lenses and turrets

Ars Elemental's spell glyphs, such as Glyph Spark and Glyph Watery Grave, are crafted with Ars Nouveau's glyph recipe type. The filter glyphs, such as Glyph Undead Filter, build on Ars Nouveau's Item Scroll: Allow and Item Scroll: Deny items, and the recipe below shows one of them. The pack changed the recipe for Glyph Spike.[3]

Glyph (ars_nouveau)

Recipe id: ars_elemental:glyph_undead_filter

The prism lenses and turrets also lean on Ars Nouveau. Advanced Spell Prism is an upgrade of Ars Nouveau's Spell Prism, and the recipe below shows it. Lenses like Acceleration Prism Lens, Deceleration Prism Lens and Piercing Prism Lens are made by imbuement. So are the infused turrets, such as Fire Infused Turret, which start from Ars Nouveau's Enchanted Spell Turret.[3]

Rituals and the Flight shortcut

The recipe below shows how Flashing Archwood Sapling is made. Its log feeds several Ars Elemental rituals, such as Repulsion and Zapping. Forestation - Archwood builds on Ars Nouveau's Forestation.[3]

There is also an alternative way to get Ars Nouveau's own Flight ritual, using a Flashing Archwood Log from Ars Elemental.[3]

Other recipes the pack changed

Besides the armor upgrades and the Spike glyph, the pack changed these Ars Elemental recipes that rely on Ars Nouveau items:[3]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Ars Elemental?

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Only one quest in the pack involves this mod, and it sits in the Ars Nouveau chapter rather than in a chapter of its own.[7]

The quest is a quest in "?", which has no title in the quest file. Its task is to submit one item, the Mark of Mastery. It unlocks after you finish a quest in "?", so complete that one first.[7]

Because the quest is a single item task, the order is simple: finish the quest it depends on, then hand in the Mark of Mastery.[7]

Unverified The quest file doesn't say how to obtain the Mark of Mastery in this pack, and it doesn't list any rewards for the quest. Check the item's recipe or in-game guide before you plan around it. This site does hold FTB Skies 2's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Which Ars Elemental config options matter?

5 parts

Most of Ars Elemental runs on its stock settings in this pack. In the config files shown here, the only value marked as changed from the mod default is the Conflagrate amplify value. Everything below is exactly how the pack sets things, and I'll tell you when a value is a mod default.[8][9]

The one confirmed pack change

general.amplify is 3 in this pack, while the mod default is 5. The base general.damage stays at the default 9, and general.cost stays at the default 80. The pack also sets general.augment_limits to Amplify=2 for this glyph, so you can't stack it endlessly.[8]

Glyph settings worth knowing

Foci, armor and lenses

  • The lesser focus discounts matching spell cost by 0.15 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.elemental_less_focus_discount]]) and the greater focus by 0.25 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Discount.elemental_maj_focus_discount]]). Both are mod defaults.[9]
  • Each elemental armor piece gives 100 max mana ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Armors.armorMaxMana]]) and 4 mana regen ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Armors.armorManaRegen]]). Both are mod defaults.[9]
  • A chain lens can bring a projectile up to 15 glyphs (Misc.chainLensLimit), and a piercing lens applies at most 10 pierce (Misc.pierceLensLimit). Both are mod defaults.[9]
  • The focus amplify options ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Amplify.fire_focus_buff]], [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Amplify.water_focus_buff]], [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Amplify.air_focus_buff]] and [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Amplify.earth_focus_buff]]) are all set to 1.[9]
  • The focus dampening options ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Dampening.fire_focus_debuff]], [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Dampening.water_focus_debuff]], [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Dampening.air_focus_debuff]] and [[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Elemental Spell Foci - Dampening.earth_focus_debuff]]) are all set to -1.[9]

Source costs and mermaids

The slipstream elevator uses 10 source ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Source cost.airElevatorCost]]). The magmatic elevator ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Source cost.lavaElevatorCost]]) and the bubble elevator ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Source cost.waterElevatorCost]]) both cost 0. The water urn consumes 100 ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Source cost.waterUrnCost]]). All of these are mod defaults.[9]

Siren shrines consume 1000 source per generation ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Mermaid Fishing.mermaidManaCost]]). They need 30 channels before producing loot ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Mermaid Fishing.mermaidMaxProgress]]) and can produce at most 5 items per cycle ([[config:config/ars_elemental-common.toml#Mermaid Fishing.mermaidQuantityCap]]). These are mod defaults too.[9]

Gameplay toggles

  • Mobs-Disabled.magesAggro is true, so wandering mages target you unless you wear the focus of their school.[9]
  • Misc.homing_nerf is false, so homing isn't limited to glowing mobs.[9]
  • Misc.always_thunder is true, so lightning keeps crashing often in flashing archwood biomes.[9]
  • frame_skip_recipe is false, so the iframe skip glyph recipe is off.[9]
  • On the client side, the black spell book texture and the spell focus rendering are both on ([[config:config/ars_elemental-client.toml#Visual Configs.Enable BlackBookTexture]] and [[config:config/ars_elemental-client.toml#Visual Configs.Enable SpellFocusRender]]).[15]
