What is Refined Storage?
2 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide
Refined Storage is a mass storage mod. It gives you a network-based storage system for items and fluids, and that network can grow very large. If your chests are overflowing and you're tired of hunting through them, this mod is for you.[1]
The idea is simple. You connect storage devices to the same network, and everything on it is reachable through one Grid interface. Instead of opening many inventories, you browse them all in a single GUI.[1]
More than storage
The mod also adds devices that move and manipulate items and blocks, both in the world and from within the system. The project page names importers, exporters, constructors and destructors, plus others. It also has devices for auto-crafting, so you can make complex recipes with a few clicks.[1]
Version in this pack
This pack includes Refined Storage 3.2.1, using the NeoForge build of the mod.[2]
Unverified The sources I have don't say where Refined Storage fits in the pack's progression, and they show no quests or ATM Star path steps for it. Check the in-game recipes before planning your progression around it. This site does hold FTB Evolution 2's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
How do you get started with Refined Storage?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide
Refined Storage turns your base into one network: you connect storage and devices together, then reach everything through a single screen. Your first goal is a small working network that can hold items and show them to you. Here are the first items to make, in a sensible order, with the real in-pack recipes.[1][3]
First: Controller, to power the network
Start with the Controller. You use one or several Controllers in a storage network to provide it with energy. A Controller that is inactive can't be used as an energy source by the network.[3]

Next: Cable, to connect everything
Next, make some Cable. You use it to connect devices to each other, but you can also place devices directly against each other.[3]

Then: Grid, to see your storage
The Grid is how you interact with your storage. Every storage device connected to the network is accessible through this one interface, so it's the screen you'll use most.[1][3]

Finally: Disk Drive and a storage disk
The network needs somewhere to keep items. The Disk Drive holds your storage disks, and a storage disk such as the 1k Storage Disk goes into the drive. Fluids work the same way: a Fluid Storage Disk, for example the 64B Fluid Storage Disk, goes into your Disk Drive. The recipes below show how to make the drive and the disk.[3][4]

The pack also has a second, shapeless recipe for the same disk that starts from a Storage Housing.[4]

Where to go next
- Upgrade your Grid to a Crafting Grid to get crafting abilities.[3]
- Use an Importer to get resources into the network and an Exporter to get them out.[3]
- Add an External Storage to give the network the storage of an external block like a chest.[3]
- When you want automation, create patterns in a Pattern Grid and use them with an Autocrafter.[3]
How does Refined Storage work?
9 parts
Refined Storage is built around a network: you connect storage devices and tools to one network, and a single Grid interface lets you reach everything stored on it. Items and fluids both work this way. On top of storage, the mod adds devices that move items and blocks in and out of the world, plus autocrafting.[1]
Networks, cables and power
Every network needs a Controller, which gives the network its energy. You can use one or several Controllers. Devices join the network through Cable, or you can place them against each other.[5]
Energy is required in this pack (requireEnergy is true). A Controller's capacity is set by controller.energyCapacity, which is 1,000 here, the same as the mod default. Cable itself costs nothing to run (cable.energyUsage is 0). Every device below has its own usage setting in the same config file, and the values listed here are the same as the mod defaults.[6]
- Grid: 10. Crafting Grid: 14. Pattern Grid: 14.[6]
- Disk Drive: 10, plus 4 for each disk inside it. Disk Interface: 6, plus 4 per disk.[6]
- Importer: 2. Exporter: 2. Constructor: 3. Destructor: 3. Interface: 4. Detector: 2.[6]
- External Storage: 6. Storage Monitor: 4.[6]
Storage
In the mod's own descriptions, storage disks go into a Disk Drive, and a Fluid Storage Disk goes into the Disk Drive for fluids. The Portable Grid lets you access the content of disks without a storage network. A Disk Interface transfers resources between the network and storage disks, and an External Storage provides the network with storage from an external block like a chest.[5]
Storage also comes as placeable blocks. Item blocks come in 1k, 4k, 16k and 64k sizes. Fluid blocks come in 64B, 256B, 1024B and 4096B sizes. There are Creative versions of both.[5]
- Item storage blocks: 1k uses 2, 4k uses 4, 16k uses 6, 64k uses 8.[6][7]
- Fluid storage blocks: 64B uses 2, 256B uses 4, 1024B uses 6, 4096B uses 8.[6][8][9][10]
- The Creative Storage Block and Creative Fluid Storage Block use 16 each.[6]
A storage's access mode setting controls what the network may do with it. Insert only means the network can only put things in, and the contents stay visible in a Grid. Extract only means the network can only take things out. Insert and extract allows both.[5]

Moving things in and out
- Importer: gets resources into the network.[5]
- Exporter: gets resources out of the network.[5]
- Interface: can export and import items at the same time.[5]
- Constructor: gets blocks from the network into the world.[5]
- Destructor: gets blocks from the world into the network.[5]
- Detector: uses redstone to check resources stored in the network.[5]
- Storage Monitor: lets you view, insert or extract resources in a storage network.[5]
This pack groups the Constructor, Destructor, Importer, Exporter and Interface with their higher-tier versions from Cable Tiers. Those versions are elite, ultra, mega and creative.[12]
Upgrades
The mod describes upgrades as a way to improve various devices. Using an Autocrafting Upgrade in an Interface, Exporter or Constructor lets that device autocraft resources on demand. The Fortune 1 and Fortune 2 upgrades are made with an enchanted book in this pack's recipes.[5][11]
Upgrade With Enchanted Book (refinedstorage)
Recipe id: refinedstorage:fortune_1_upgrade
Fortune 1 Upgrade is crafted with an enchanted book.
Upgrade With Enchanted Book (refinedstorage)
Recipe id: refinedstorage:fortune_2_upgrade
Fortune 2 Upgrade works the same way.
Each upgrade adds to a device's energy use. The settings are: Speed 4, Stack 16, Range 8, Regulator 16, Silk Touch 16, Autocrafting 8, Fortune 1 at 10, Fortune 2 at 12 and Fortune 3 at 14. The Creative Range Upgrade costs 0. The range upgrade's range setting is 8.[6]
Autocrafting
You create patterns in a Pattern Grid, and an Autocrafter uses them to automate crafting. An Autocrafter uses 4 energy plus 2 for every pattern it holds (autocrafter.energyUsage and autocrafter.energyUsagePerPattern).[5][6]
If another Autocrafter faces an Autocrafter, they form a chain, which allows more patterns to go into a single machine. The GUI tells you whether an Autocrafter is the head of a chain, part of one, or not chained.[5]
Each Autocrafter also has a lock mode. When a lock applies, the GUI shows the message that the Autocrafter is currently locked. The lock mode options are:[5]
- Never[5]
- Lock until all outputs are received[5]
- Lock until connected machine is empty[5]
- Lock until high redstone signal[5]
- Lock until low redstone signal[5]
- Lock until redstone pulse is received[5]
The Autocrafter Manager gathers your patterns in one centralized interface. It only shows an Autocrafter if that Autocrafter's "Visible to the Autocrafter Manager" option is on. Its view type can be All, Not full or Visible, and this pack defaults to Visible. Its search can cover pattern inputs, pattern outputs, Autocrafter names or all three, and the pack defaults to All. The Manager uses 16 energy.[5][6]
The Autocrafting Monitor shows the status of your autocrafting tasks and has Cancel and Cancel all buttons. Its messages cover problems such as a missing resource, no machine found, an Autocrafter that is locked, or a machine that does not accept a resource. It uses 16 energy. In this pack the autocrafting preview defaults to the LIST style (the other option is TREE), and autocrafting notifications are on.[5][6]
The Autocrafter, Autocrafter Manager and Autocrafting Monitor also come in colored variants through recoloring recipes. The dump counts 320 recoloring recipes in total. The black versions are Black Autocrafter, Black Autocrafter Manager and Black Autocrafting Monitor.[11]
Recoloring (refinedstorage)
Recipe id: refinedstorage:coloring/black_autocrafter
Recoloring gives you the black Autocrafter.
Grids
The Grid is how you interact with your storage. You can upgrade it to a Crafting Grid to get crafting abilities. In this pack the Grid sorts by quantity in ascending order by default, shows all resources, and has detailed tooltips on. A Crafting Grid's crafting matrix does nothing when you close it by default (NONE), though you can set it to clear to the network or to your inventory.[5][6]
Wireless, portable and linked networks
A Wireless Grid gives you wireless access to your resources, and a Wireless Autocrafting Monitor lets you check autocrafting tasks wirelessly. The Wireless Transmitter has a base range of 16 and uses 16 energy. The Wireless Grid, Portable Grid and Wireless Autocrafting Monitor each have an energy capacity of 1,000. Opening a Wireless or Portable Grid costs 5, and inserting or extracting also costs 5 each. The Wireless Autocrafting Monitor costs 5 to open, to cancel, and to cancel all.[5][6]
You can add components without cables by using a Network Transmitter, a Network Receiver and a Network Card. The Transmitter uses 32 energy and the Receiver uses 8.[5][6]
A Relay can turn whole sections of a network on or off and create new branches. It uses 8 energy for its input network and 8 for its output network.[5][6]
Security
Per its in-game help text, the Security Manager protects the network by default and blocks all operations while it is active. You then add Security Cards to permit or deny specific operations for a player. The Security Manager uses 16 energy, a Security Card uses 2, and the fallback Security Card uses 4.[5][6]
Processors and quartz enriched metals
The Basic Processor and Advanced Processor are made by smelting, not in a crafting grid.[11]
The pack adds extra ways to make Quartz Enriched Iron and Quartz Enriched Copper from ingots. They run in Ender IO, Energized Power and FTB Industrial Contraptions machines. The first two machines give 4 per craft, and the FTB Industrial Contraptions recipe gives 1.[11]
Alloy Smelting (enderio)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/enderio/alloy_smelting/from_ingots/quartz_enriched_iron
Added by the pack, makes 4 Quartz Enriched Iron.
Alloy Smelting (ftbic)

Added by the pack, makes 1 Quartz Enriched Copper.
How do you progress through Refined Storage?
4 parts
Refined Storage progression in this pack is a ladder of materials and storage sizes. The sources I have cover the crafting recipes in detail, so this section follows those recipes tier by tier.[11]
Unverified The quest book is not shown in the sources here, so I can't tell you which quest chapter, if any, covers Refined Storage or what order it expects. Check the pack's quest book in game. The tiers below follow the recipes only.
Step 1: Quartz enriched metals and processors
Everything starts with Quartz Enriched Iron and Quartz Enriched Copper. The pack adds alloy recipes from ingots for both metals in three machines: Ender IO and Energized Power each make 4 per craft, and FTB Industrial Contraptions has its own version too. These unification recipes are added by the pack, not by the mod.[11]
You also have other routes to Quartz Enriched Iron. Mystical Agriculture has a shaped crafting recipe that makes 8 of it, and Productive Bees has a centrifuge recipe that gives Quartz Enriched Iron plus wax.[11]
Processors come in three grades: Basic Processor, Improved Processor and Advanced Processor. Each grade has a raw item and a finished item, and the basic grade's recipes are shown below.[11]

The finished processor comes from smelting.
Step 2: Item storage tiers
Item storage runs through the 1k, 4k, 16k and 64k sizes. The first three have storage parts (1k Storage Part, 4k Storage Part, 16k Storage Part), and each of these sizes also has a disk and a block. The sources do not show a recipe for a 64k part, but the 64k disk and block have upgrade recipes.[11]

Every disk size also has a shapeless recipe from a storage housing, so you can keep the housing and swap parts in. Upgrading uses a dedicated recipe type: there are upgrade recipes for the 4k, 16k and 64k disks and blocks, which move you up a tier from the previous one.[11]
Storage Container Upgrade (refinedstorage)
Recipe id: refinedstorage:16k_storage_disk_upgrade
Upgrade recipes use their own recipe type.
Step 3: Fluid storage tiers
Fluids have their own ladder: 64B, 256B, 1024B and 4096B. The 256B, 1024B and 4096B tiers each have shaped part, disk and block recipes, plus housing and upgrade recipes. For the 64B tier the sources only show the block recipe and the disk from a housing.[11]

How does Refined Storage work with other mods?
2 parts
In this pack, Refined Storage connects with Productive Bees and ExtraStorage. The Productive Bees link is a recipe, and the ExtraStorage link comes from Refined Storage's own tag files. No quests in this pack involve the mod.[11][13][14]
Productive Bees: Quartz Enriched Iron from a centrifuge
Productive Bees has a centrifuge recipe in this pack that outputs Wax and Quartz Enriched Iron. So your bee setup can feed a Refined Storage material.[11]
Centrifuge (productivebees)
Recipe id: productivebees:centrifuge/refinedstorage/honeycomb_quartz_enriched_iron
The in-pack centrifuge recipe. It gives Wax and Quartz Enriched Iron.
ExtraStorage: bigger storage tiers
ExtraStorage plugs straight into Refined Storage's tags. Refined Storage groups its storage blocks into an items tag and a fluids tag, and ExtraStorage's blocks fill the tiers of both.[13][15][16]
- Item storage blocks: the 256k, 1024k, 4096k and 16384k tiers each hold an ExtraStorage block.[16][17][18][19][20]
- Fluid storage blocks: the 16384b, 65536b, 262144b and 1048576b tiers each hold an ExtraStorage fluid block.[15][21][22][23][24]
- Fluid disks: the 1048576b tier in Refined Storage's fluid disk tags holds the ExtraStorage disk 1048576b Fluid Storage Disk.[14][25][26]
In practice, these ExtraStorage blocks and that fluid disk count as Refined Storage storage blocks and disks in these tags, so anything that checks the tags will recognise them.[13][14][26]
Which Refined Storage config options matter?
5 parts
Here is the quick version for Refined Storage in this pack: every numeric setting is left at its mod default. The pack changed none of the energy, capacity or range values, so what you see in config/refinedstorage-common.toml is plain stock behaviour.[6]
Energy switch and power capacity
- requireEnergy is true, so your network needs power to run.[6]
- controller.energyCapacity is 1,000, the same as the mod default.[6]
- cable.energyUsage is 0, so cables cost nothing to run.[6]
- wirelessGrid.energyCapacity is 1,000.[6]
- portableGrid.energyCapacity is 1,000.[6]
- wirelessAutocraftingMonitor.energyCapacity is 1,000.[6]
What common devices cost
- grid.energyUsage is 10.[6]
- craftingGrid.energyUsage is 14.[6]
- patternGrid.energyUsage is 14.[6]
- Disk drive: diskDrive.energyUsage is 10, plus diskDrive.energyUsagePerDisk at 4 for each disk.[6]
- Autocrafter: autocrafter.energyUsage is 4, plus autocrafter.energyUsagePerPattern at 2 for each pattern.[6]
- importer.energyUsage and exporter.energyUsage are both 2.[6]
- constructor.energyUsage and destructor.energyUsage are both 3.[6]
- networkTransmitter.energyUsage is 32, the hungry one.[6]
- networkReceiver.energyUsage is 8.[6]
Storage block costs
Storage blocks cost more energy as they get bigger. Here are the item storage block values, all at their mod defaults.[6]
- storageBlock.1kEnergyUsage is 2.[6]
- storageBlock.4kEnergyUsage is 4.[6]
- storageBlock.16kEnergyUsage is 6.[6]
- storageBlock.64kEnergyUsage is 8.[6]
Fluid storage blocks follow the same pattern.[6]
- fluidStorageBlock.64bEnergyUsage is 2.[6]
- fluidStorageBlock.256bEnergyUsage is 4.[6]
- fluidStorageBlock.1024bEnergyUsage is 6.[6]
- fluidStorageBlock.4096bEnergyUsage is 8.[6]
Range
wirelessTransmitter.baseRange is 16 and upgrade.rangeUpgradeRange is 8, both matching the mod defaults. The wireless transmitter itself uses 16 (wirelessTransmitter.energyUsage), and each range upgrade adds an energy cost of 8 (upgrade.rangeUpgradeEnergyUsage).[6]
Interface and grid preferences
These are the defaults you start with, and you can change them in the file.[6]
- screenSize is STRETCH, with maxRowsStretch at 256.[6]
- Grids sort by QUANTITY (grid.sortingType) in ASCENDING order (grid.sortingDirection), and the view shows ALL (grid.viewType).[6]
- grid.rememberSearchQuery is false and searchBoxAutoSelected is false.[6]
- autocraftingPreviewStyle is LIST (the other option is TREE), and autocraftingNotification is true.[6]
- craftingGrid.craftingMatrixCloseBehavior is NONE, so closing a crafting grid does not clear the crafting matrix anywhere.[6]
- debug is false.[6]
What changed in Refined Storage between versions?
1 part
Refined Storage is in FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 as version 3.2.1. It was already in the pack in 1.0.2 or earlier, so it isn't a new addition in this release.[27]
Refined Storage 3.2.1
- Fixed: a minor rendering problem with the new autocrafting pins in the Grid.[28]
That's the only change listed in the mod changelog I have for the version in this pack. It's a small visual fix, so you don't need to change anything about how you build or use your storage network.[27][28]
Unverified The sources here include no pack changelog entries for Refined Storage, so any changes the pack itself made to this mod across its releases are not shown. Check the pack's own changelogs for those.
