Roots Classic is a mod in FTB Evolution 2 1.4.0, where it is version 26.1.2-1.6.7. Create magic wands and perform druidic rituals (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Roots Classic?

Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide

Roots Classic is part of the pack. This version of the pack ships Roots Classic 26.1.2-1.6.7, and it has been in the pack since this version or an earlier one.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't describe what Roots Classic adds, who it suits best, or how it fits into the pack's progression, so I'm not going to guess. There is no in-jar guidebook or platform metadata to draw on. The pack data also shows no quests involving this mod, and it is not on the ATM Star quest path.

Tip: Check the version before following any outside Roots Classic tutorial. This pack uses 26.1.2-1.6.7, and recipes or configs in other guides may differ from what the pack actually does.[1]

How do you get started with Roots Classic?

7 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide

Roots Classic is a nature-magic mod, and almost everything in it points back to one book. The best way to start is to craft that book, then work through the tools, spell gear and ritual blocks in the order below. This order is my suggested path, not something the pack enforces.[2]

Step one: the Runic Tablet

Make the Runic Tablet first. It's the guidebook for the mod and explains all of its spells and rituals. Almost every other item's description sends you back to it, so keep it on you.[2]

Step two: the Bark Knife

Next comes the Bark Knife. Use it on a log to peel bark, which is used in magic rituals. The pack has bark items for oak, birch, spruce, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, cherry and pale oak.[2]

Step three: Mortar and Pestle

The Mortar and Pestle work as a pair to create spells. While you're out gathering, keep an eye on tall grass: Old Root is a basic spell component and drops from it.[2]

Step four: the Imbuer for staffs

Once you have Spell Powder, the Imbuer lets you create a magical staff from it. Spell Powder is a combination of ingredients that makes up a spell, and the Runic Tablet is where you look those up.[2]

Step five: ritual blocks

Rituals are how you get the stronger gear. The Casting Altar is the centerpiece for casting rituals, and the Incense Brazier holds the incense that burns during them. Standing stones build the ritual patterns shown in the Runic Tablet: the Mundane Standing Stone is the basic ritual stone, and the Attuned Standing Stone is the advanced one.[2]

What rituals give you

Ritual-made gear includes the self-repairing Living tools, such as the Living Pickaxe, as well as Sylvan and Wildwood armor. Ritual crafting also covers the Runic Focus, which stores energy for rituals, and the Crystal Staff, an advanced spellcasting staff.[2][3]

    How does Roots Classic work?

    5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.10.0-beta guide

Roots Classic is built around rituals and spellcasting. The Runic Tablet is the mod's own guidebook, and it explains all the spells and rituals. Nearly every block and item description in the mod points you back to it, so craft it first.[2]

    Setting up a ritual

The Casting Altar is the centre piece for casting rituals. The Incense Brazier holds incense that burns during rituals. Around them you build ritual patterns out of ritual stones: the Mundane Standing Stone is the basic one and the Attuned Standing Stone is the advanced one.[2]

The Incense Brazier is also a crafting-table recipe.

Rituals are also a recipe type. The pack has 25 recipes of type rootsclassic:ritual, each with a different result. The Living Pickaxe, the Sylvan Boots, the Crystal Staff and the Engraved Blade are all ritual results, and so are the beacon standing stones.[2][4]

The Crystal Staff is also made through a ritual.

The Runic Focus and the Charged Runic Focus both store energy for Roots rituals. Both are themselves ritual recipes in this pack.[2][4]

Unverified The exact ritual layouts, the ingredients each ritual consumes and the energy costs are shown in the Runic Tablet in-game. The sources here do not show them, and the pack has no config files for this mod.

          Standing stones

Besides the two ritual-pattern stones, the mod has standing stones that do a job once the ritual that crafts them is done. Here is what each one is described as:[2]

The accelerator, aesthetic, attuned, entangler, grower, healer, igniter, repulsor and vacuum stones have a lower half in their block state, and their loot tables only drop the item from that lower half. Break the bottom of the stone when you want to pick it up.[5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]

          Spells, Mortar and Imbuer

The Mortar is used together with the Pestle to create spells. Spell Powder is a combination of ingredients that makes up a spell, and the Imbuer uses Spell Powder to create magical Staffs.[2]

The mod also keeps spell tags named efficiency, potency and size. They list Redstone, Glowstone Dust and Gunpowder respectively.[14][15][16]

The Flare Orchid, Midnight Bloom and Radiant Daisy are advanced spell components. Old Root is a basic one that drops from tall grass. Berries such as Nightshade, Blackcurrant, Redcurrant, Whitecurrant and Elderberry also go into spells and rituals, and the mod groups them in a berries tag.[2][17]

          Bark and living tools

Bark is a ritual material. Right-click a log with the Bark Knife to harvest it. There is a chance of breaking the log block, so do not use a log you want to keep.[2]

The Living tools, such as the Living Axe, are self-repairing and come from a ritual. The mod's tag for blocks these tools cannot mine properly uses the same list as iron tools. The Engraved Blade has the same entry.[2][18][19]

          Pack change: Rooty Stew

Tip: The pack sets the max stack size of Rooty Stew to 16 with a KubeJS script. Several other modded stews get the same limit.[20]

How do you progress through Roots Classic?

          3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.10.0-beta guide

The recipes for Roots Classic in this pack split into two groups: items made in a normal crafting grid, and items made with the mod's own ritual recipe type. That split is the most useful way to plan your progression.[4]

Unverified No quests in this pack involve Roots Classic, and the mod is not on the ATM Star quest path. The sources here do not show any quest order for it, so follow the crafting split below instead.

          Crafted by hand

The tools and stations come from a regular crafting grid: Mortar, Pestle, Bark Knife, Casting Altar, Incense Brazier, Imbuer and Runic Tablet. The Pestle has two separate recipes, and both are shown below.[4]

Tip: When you pick up a placed standing stone, break the lower half. The loot tables for the accelerator, aesthetic, attuned, entangler, grower, healer and igniter stones only drop the item from the lower half. The Casting Altar, Incense Brazier and Imbuer drop themselves with no such condition.[5][6][7][8][9][10][11][21][22][23]

How does Roots Classic work with other mods?

                      1 part

Roots Classic has one in-pack connection to other mods that the sources here confirm: a recipe the pack adds for the Rune Plate. It is a short section because this is the only place where the pack mixes Roots Classic items with items from other mods.[24]

Rune Plate: three mods in one recipe

The pack adds the Rune Plate recipe itself, and it is crafted in the cauldron from Just Another Witchery Remake, not on a Roots Classic block. Roots Classic contributes Growth Powder. The rest of the inputs come from Ars Magica: Legacy and Just Another Witchery Remake. One craft gives you two Rune Plates.[24]

2× Rune PlateAdded by the pack

                      Cauldron Crafting (witchery)

                      Recipe id: ftb:feed_the_beast/rune_plate

Added by the pack, crafted through Witchery cauldron crafting.

If you want Rune Plates, you will need Growth Powder from Roots Classic along with items from the other two mods.[24]

Which Roots Classic config options matter?

                      4 parts

Roots Classic keeps its settings in one file, config/rootsclassic-common.toml. In this pack almost everything matches the mod default, so there is only one change to know about. The rest of this section covers that change and then the options you are most likely to want to tweak.[25]

The one value the pack changed

items.berriesDropChance is set to 0 in this pack. The mod default is 25. The option's description says berries drop from oak leaves with a 1/berriesDropChance probability, and the allowed range is 0 to 32,767. If you expected berries from oak leaves the way the mod normally works, check this value first.[25]

                      Ingredient drop chances

These options all use the same 1/value probability style, and the pack leaves each one at the mod default. A higher number means a rarer drop.[25]

items.barkKnifeBlockStripChance is 0.3, the mod default. It is the chance that the bark knife strips the log, and a value of 1 means it always strips on the first harvest. The allowed range is 0.1 to 1.0.[25]

                      Staffs, mana and spells

                      Multiplayer

magic.disablePVP controls whether damaging spells can affect players. In this pack it is false, so damaging spells can hit other players.[25]

Tip: On a server where you do not want players hurting each other with spells, magic.disablePVP is the option to change.[25]
