JAWR: Forbidden Magic is a mod in FTB Evolution 2 1.4.0, where it is version 0.5.22+mc26.1.2. A soul magic addon for Just Another Witchery Remake. Explore Lichdom and soul trading (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is JAWR: Forbidden Magic?

2 parts

JAWR: Forbidden Magic is a soul magic addon for Just Another Witchery Remake. It adds the content that doesn't fit in the base mod, and it follows the base mod's general theme.[1]

What it adds

  • Lichdom, with 10 levels, quests, abilities and a phylactery.[1]
  • New rituals, including a Petrification ritual and a ritual of Soul severance.[1]
  • Soul trading with the Imp, where you trade souls for items.[1]
  • Necromancy infusion, which lets you bring back dead villagers and zombies to fight for you.[1]

Version in this pack

This pack ships version 0.5.13+mc26.1.2 of the mod. It was already in the pack by version 1.0.2 or earlier, so it isn't a new arrival in 1.1.0.[2]

How do you get started with JAWR: Forbidden Magic?

3 parts

JAWR: Forbidden Magic is a soul magic addon for Just Another Witchery Remake. Its project page lists lichdom, new rituals, soul trading with the Imp and necromancy infusion. The sources I have only cover three of its crafting recipes, so this section sticks to those.[1]

Step 1: Brew of Soul Severance

This is the best place to start, because the mod's own text tells you what it does. Brew of Soul Severance severs the tie between soul and flesh. You can wander as a spirit or take the dead as hosts, but you need to return soon or your body rots.[3]

It is made by cauldron brewing, and the ingredients come from the base Witchery mod, so you will need to have explored that side of the pack first. The recipe block below shows the exact in-pack version.[4]

Cauldron Brewing (witchery)

Recipe id: witchery_forbidden_magic:cauldron_brewing/brew_of_soul_severance

Cauldron brewing recipe for the Brew of Soul Severance.

Step 2: Necromantic Soulbind

Necromantic Soulbind is described as a potent essence of trapped souls, used in dark rituals to bind or manipulate spirits. It is also a cauldron brewing recipe, so you will use the same workflow as the first brew.[3][4]

Cauldron Brewing (witchery)

Recipe id: witchery_forbidden_magic:cauldron_brewing/necromantic_soulbind

Cauldron brewing recipe for the Necromantic Soulbind.

Step 3: Soulstone Pendant

Soulstone Pendant is the third item with a recipe in the sources. It is a shapeless crafting recipe rather than a cauldron brew. The recipe dump lists no item inputs for it, so check the block below for what the pack actually uses.[4]

Crafting Shapeless

  • Lifeblood
  • Wool Of Bat
  • Impregnated Fabric
  • Echo Shard

Recipe id: witchery_forbidden_magic:soulstone_pendant

Shapeless crafting recipe for the Soulstone Pendant.

Tip: Both brews depend on items from the base Witchery mod, so if a cauldron recipe stalls, the missing piece is probably there and not in this addon.[4]

How does JAWR: Forbidden Magic work?

5 parts

JAWR: Forbidden Magic is a soul magic addon for Just Another Witchery Remake. It adds lichdom with 10 levels, new rituals, soul trading with the Imp and necromancy infusion. So the core mechanics here are rituals, cauldron brews and the lich progression, not machines.[1]

Rituals

The mod's own text describes several rituals. Here is what each one does, in the mod's words.[3]

  • Binding: binds entities to an area.[3]
  • Necromantic Infusion: infuses the player with Necromantic Soulbind. It lets you raise the souls of the slain with the Witches Hand, and dead villagers and zombies fight for you. The ritual kills the user, so you need a way to circumvent death prepared before you gain its effects.[1][3]
  • Soul Severance: splits you from your flesh, and the tooltip says it is not advised. You wander as a spirit or take the dead as hosts, and you should return soon or your body rots.[3]
  • Soulbind: fuses a player's soul form into flesh again.[3]
  • Rite of Petrification: turns you and others into stone, and every mob in the area is petrified.[3]
  • Bind Phylactery: rips a soul from a humanoid and binds it to a very close Phylactery.[3][5]

Brews

Two of the mod's key items are made by cauldron brewing. The Brew of Soul Severance is the item behind the Soul Severance ritual, and its guidebook text calls it a way to tear your soul from its mortal shell.[3][4]

Cauldron Brewing (witchery)

Brewed in the cauldron.

Necromantic Soulbind is described as a potent essence of trapped souls, used in dark rituals to bind or manipulate spirits.[3]

Also brewed in the cauldron.

Souls as a resource

The Soulstone Pendant is the mod's way of treating other souls as a resource. The text says most soul magic probably needs a pure villager's soul or a zombie villager's soul, and that even a novice Lich can strip them.[3]

Crafting Shapeless

  • Lifeblood
  • Wool Of Bat
  • Impregnated Fabric
  • Echo Shard

Recipe id: witchery_forbidden_magic:soulstone_pendant

Lichdom and the phylactery

A phylactery stores part of a lich's soul. That soul stops the lich from dying, because it is consumed in the lich's place. To bind a soul to it you need Tormented Twine, Necromantic Stone, a Phylactery and a Villager or a Villager's Soul. The Phylactery block drops itself when broken.[3][5]

The carvings in the mod's text hint at how the full version works. The vessel needs a clear view of the sky, and true lichdom means dying three times, each death within the span of a single night. The phylactery then holds three souls in reserve.[3]

The carvings also hint at tasks along the way. One says five golems must be destroyed by necrotic hands, and another mentions a three-souled horror born of nether stars.[3]

Watch out: The Necromantic Infusion ritual kills the user. Have a way to circumvent death ready before you perform it.[3]

Lich perks and extras

  • Soul in a Bottle: a fully leveled Lich can use Life Drain to kill a humanoid while holding a glass bottle in the off-hand. The bottle gives a Soul in a Bottle, which Liches can consume to regain 2 hearts.[3]
  • Lifeblood Berry: grants temporary hearts that regenerate. The Lifeblood Plant block drops as an item only when broken with shears.[3][6]
  • Petrification Contract: right-click to learn the forbidden glyph of Petrify. The text says you get it from an Imp trade, and the glyph turns the targeted creature to stone for a short time.[3]

How do you progress through JAWR: Forbidden Magic?

3 parts

JAWR: Forbidden Magic is an add-on for Just Another Witchery Remake. In this pack the sources confirm these craftable items: the Brew of Soul Severance, the Necromantic Soulbind and the Soulstone Pendant. The recipes below are the exact in-pack versions, so use them as your checklist.[4]

Cauldron brews

The Brew of Soul Severance and the Necromantic Soulbind are both made by cauldron brewing, which is the recipe type from the base Witchery mod. Both recipes take other Witchery items as inputs, so you will be working through the base mod before you get here.[4]

Cauldron Brewing (witchery)

Recipe id: witchery_forbidden_magic:cauldron_brewing/necromantic_soulbind

Soulstone Pendant

The Soulstone Pendant is a regular shapeless crafting recipe, so no cauldron is involved. The recipe dump lists no item inputs for it.[4]

Crafting Shapeless

  • Lifeblood
  • Wool Of Bat
  • Impregnated Fabric
  • Echo Shard

Gathering notes

Tip: The lifeblood block only drops its plant item (witchery_forbidden_magic:lifeblood_plant) when you break it with shears, so bring a pair along.[6]

How does JAWR: Forbidden Magic work with other mods?

3 parts

JAWR: Forbidden Magic is an addon for Just Another Witchery Remake, so almost all of its connections in this pack run straight into the base Witchery mod. The in-pack recipes that mix the two mods show it clearly: the addon's items are made with base-mod brewing and ritual recipe types, using base-mod items plus a few vanilla ones.[1][4]

Brewing with the base mod's cauldron

Both of the addon's brews use the base mod's cauldron brewing recipe type. They pull in base-mod ingredients, such as Mandrake Root and Spectral Dust, along with vanilla items like Soul Sand and Bone.[4]

First up is the Brew of Soul Severance, which is brewed in the cauldron.[4]

Cauldron Brewing (witchery)

Recipe id: witchery_forbidden_magic:cauldron_brewing/brew_of_soul_severance

A cauldron brewing recipe that mixes a vanilla item with base-mod ingredients.

The Necromantic Soulbind is also a cauldron brew. It uses the vanilla Totem Of Undying together with base-mod items such as Necromantic Stone.[4]

Cauldron Brewing (witchery)

Recipe id: witchery_forbidden_magic:cauldron_brewing/necromantic_soulbind

Brewed in the base mod's cauldron, with a mix of vanilla and base-mod items.

Phylactery rituals

The Phylactery shows up as an ingredient in two rituals that use the base mod's ritual recipe type. Both also take the Necromantic Soulbind you brewed above, plus base-mod items like the Cage, Eternal Catalyst and Focused Will. Each variant adds one vanilla item, either Gold Ingot or Lapis Lazuli.[4]

Mod recipe

Ritual (witchery)

Recipe id: witchery_forbidden_magic:ritual/phylactery_1

The first Phylactery ritual, a base-mod ritual recipe.

Mod recipe

Ritual (witchery)

Recipe id: witchery_forbidden_magic:ritual/phylactery_2

The second Phylactery ritual variant.

Tip: Since the brews and rituals all run through the base mod's cauldron and ritual systems, get comfortable with Just Another Witchery Remake first. The soulbind brew has to exist before either Phylactery ritual is possible.[1][4]

The addon's soul cage block drops the base mod's Brazier when broken.[7]
