Applied Energistics 2 is a mod in All the Mods - Gravitas 4.0, where it is version 11.7.6. AE2: A popular automation and storage mod (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

Stuck? Why it might not be working

  • AE2 autocrafting: the job sits on Scheduled and never crafts
Scheduled means patterns the CPU has queued but not yet pushed to a machine; Crafting means outputs already pushed and still awaited. A job frozen on Scheduled is a push that keeps failing, or an output that never came back, and AE2 shows no message for either. It retries forever, so waiting will not fix it unless the cause was a power or channel dip that has since come back.
Written for other versions than All the Mods - Gravitas 4.0 ships. Some steps may no longer match.

What is Applied Energistics 2?

1 part

Applied Energistics 2, usually just called AE2, is one of the best-known storage and automation mods out there. It replaces chests full of random loot with a network-based digital storage system, where your items and blocks are stored digitally in a network of connected devices. Everything ends up compact and easy to reach from one place.[1]

Storage is only half the story. AE2 also handles autocrafting: you set up patterns, and the system crafts things on demand. That's a huge time saver for bulk and complicated crafting chains.[1]

  • Networking and channels: devices on the same network talk to each other, but the channel system limits how many devices can connect through a single cable, so you'll need to plan your layout.[1]
  • Spatial storage: you can store a whole region of the world, including its blocks, items and entities, inside a spatial storage cell and release it later.[1]
  • New resources: AE2 adds its own materials, such as Certus Quartz and Fluix Crystal, along with the Inscriber for making its tech components. Many of these come with decorative blocks too.[1]

Who is it for? If you love automating things and managing resources efficiently, AE2 is for you. It adds real depth and complexity, and it rewards you for building large, well-optimized systems.[1]

AE2 in this pack

This pack runs Applied Energistics 2 version 11.7.6, so everything in this guide refers to that version.[2]

AE2 appears in the pack's questline. One quest, a quest in "The Moon has Anvils", asks you to collect 32 Fluix Crystal. Another, a quest in "The Moon has Anvils", asks for all four Inscriber presses: Inscriber Calculation Press, Inscriber Engineering Press, Inscriber Logic Press and Inscriber Silicon Press. That press quest only unlocks after an earlier rocket quest tied to the Moon, so full processor production sits later in your progression than the early fluix grind.[3]

Unverified Where you actually find the Inscriber presses in this pack, and whether the Moon is the place to get them, is not confirmed by the available sources.

How do you get started with Applied Energistics 2?

4 parts

Everything in Applied Energistics 2 starts with a meteorite. They're fairly common and leave massive holes in the terrain, so you've probably passed one already. If you haven't, craft a Meteorite Compass, which points toward the nearest Mysterious Cube, the block at the center of every meteorite.[4]

Looting your first meteorite

Dig into the middle of the meteorite. You'll find certus quartz clusters, certus quartz buds, several types of budding certus blocks and the Mysterious Cube. Grab the clusters and any Certus Quartz Block you see. You can take budding certus blocks too, but without Silk Touch they drop one tier when you mine them.[4]

Watch out: Never break flawless budding certus. Even with Silk Touch it degrades to flawed, and there's no way to make it flawless again. Flawless blocks never decay and only come from meteorites, so leave them in place and treat them as your infinite certus source.[4][5]

Most importantly, mine the Mysterious Cube. It gives you all 4 Inscriber presses: Inscriber Calculation Press, Inscriber Engineering Press, Inscriber Logic Press and Inscriber Silicon Press. The pack's questbook has a quest, a quest in "The Moon has Anvils", that asks for exactly these four presses.[3][4]

Unverified In the questbook, the presses quest seems to come after a quest about a first moon rocket. The exact prerequisite couldn't be confirmed.

Charging quartz and making fluix

You'll need Charged Certus Quartz Crystal for a lot of early progress, and the Charger is what makes it, so build one early. If you don't have a power source yet, AE2 has a crank you can attach to a charger to power it by hand.[4][5]

Next up is Fluix Crystal, which goes into a lot of AE2 gear, including the growth accelerators below. This pack changed the Create mixing recipe that makes fluix, so follow the in-pack version rather than an older guide. Later, the quest a quest in "The Moon has Anvils" asks you for 32 of them.[3][4][6]

Unverified The mod's own guide also describes making fluix by throwing ingredients into water. It couldn't be confirmed that this method works unchanged in this pack.

Growing certus quartz

Certus buds sprout from budding certus blocks, a lot like amethyst. If you break a bud before it's done growing, you only get one Certus Quartz Dust. A fully grown cluster drops four Certus Quartz Crystal, and Fortune increases that.[4][5]

On their own, buds grow very slowly. A powered Crystal Growth Accelerator next to the budding block speeds this up massively, and the mod's guide says building a few should be your first priority. To power them, use an Energy Acceptor or a Vibration Chamber.[4][5]

Tip: Budding blocks that aren't flawless can decay as buds grow, and they eventually become plain certus quartz blocks. To repair one, or to make a new budding block, throw it (or a certus quartz block) into water with one or more charged certus crystals.[4][5]

The Inscriber and processors

Once you have the presses, craft an Inscriber. It uses the presses to make the three types of processor: Calculation Processor, Engineering Processor and Logic Processor.[4][6]

The Inscriber is a sided machine, like a furnace. Items inserted from the top or bottom go into the top or bottom slots, items from the side or back go into the center slot, and results come out of the side or back. You can rotate it with a Certus Quartz Wrench to make hopper setups tidier.[4]

Tip: Each press has a copy recipe in the Inscriber, so it's worth making spares once you can afford them.[6]

The other three presses have matching copy recipes

Make a few of each processor. You'll need them for the next step: a basic ME system, starting with the ME Controller.[4][6]

How does Applied Energistics 2 work?

7 parts

Think of an ME network as one big machine. Cables and full-block devices link everything together, the network shares one energy pool, and every storage cell or connected inventory becomes one shared network storage. Once you understand energy, channels, storage and patterns, the rest of the mod makes sense.[7][8][9]

Unverified The mechanics below come from the official AE2 players guide written for Minecraft 1.21.1. The mod version in this pack has not been confirmed, so small details may differ.

What counts as a network

A network is any group of devices linked by blocks that can pass channels, such as cables or full-block machines. Even a single cable is a network. For devices with a network function, like an ME Interface or an ME Drive, physical position doesn't matter at all. All that matters is which network they're connected to.[9]

If you're unsure what's connected, right-click with a Network Tool. It lists every component on the network, so anything missing or extra shows up immediately. Cable colour only stops differently coloured cables from connecting to each other. All colours still connect to fluix cables. Quartz Fiber shares energy but does not join two networks, while a Quantum Network Bridge acts like a wireless dense cable, so both ends are one network.[9]

Many devices can sit on a cable in the same block as other parts, which is great for compact builds. Shift-right-click with a Certus Quartz Wrench or a Network Tool to pop off a single part without breaking the whole block.[10]

Energy

AE2 runs on its own unit, AE. Energy Acceptors and ME Controllers convert other mods' power into AE, and the conversion only works one way: 2 FE becomes 1 AE on Forge, and 1 E becomes 2 AE on Fabric. Vibration Chambers and the Crystal Resonance Generator can make AE directly, but AE2 is designed to be powered by other tech mods with better generation.[7]

There are no transfer rate limits inside a network, but a network can never take in or spend more energy in one tick than it can store. That's the classic reason a tiny network reboots when you dump a full inventory of cobblestone into it. Every cable, machine or part gives a built-in buffer of 25 AE, and a controller holds 8,000 AE.[7]

  • An Energy Cell stores 200k AE, and one is enough to handle the power surges of normal network use.[7]
  • A Dense Energy Cell stores 1.6M AE. Use it when you want to run a network from stored power or feed a large spatial storage setup.[7]

Channels

Most devices need a channel to use network storage or other network services. Level Emitters are the notable exception. Standard cables, most machines and full-block devices carry up to 8 channels. Dense cables, ME P2P Tunnels and the Quantum Network Bridge carry up to 32. Each device takes one channel out of the bundle, so that channel isn't available further down the line.[11][12]

With an ME Controller, channels take the shortest path in three steps. First they travel through adjacent machines to the nearest normal cable. Then they follow that cable to the nearest dense cable. Finally they follow the dense cable to the controller. If the shortest path is already full, some devices go without a channel even when other cables are empty. Build tree-like networks: dense cables branching from the controller, normal cables branching from the dense ones, and devices in clusters of 8 or fewer. Avoid loops and ambiguous paths.[11]

A network without a controller is ad-hoc. It supports up to 8 channel-using devices across the whole network, and adding one more shuts all of them down. Smart cables display channel paths and usage, which makes debugging much easier. A device that isn't getting a channel shows Device Missing Channel.[5][11]

Tip: Channel behaviour can be changed by a server option. An operator can run /ae2 channelmode to see which mode your world is using.[11]

Unverified No AE2 config files were available for this pack, so its channel mode setting is unconfirmed.

Storage cells: bytes and types

Every storage cell has two limits: bytes, which measure the total amount stored, and types, which count how many different unique things it holds. Each item costs one bit, so 8 items take one byte, no matter how the item stacks outside the network. For fluid cells, 8 buckets take one byte. Each type also costs bytes up front, so a cell holding a single type fits about twice as much as one using all 63 types.[13]

  • The 1k ME Item Storage Cell has 1,024 bytes and holds 8,128 items with 1 type, or 4,160 with 63 types.[13]
  • The 4k ME Item Storage Cell has 4,096 bytes and holds 32,512 items with 1 type, or 16,640 with 63 types.[13]
  • The 16k ME Item Storage Cell has 16,384 bytes and holds 130,048 items with 1 type, or 66,560 with 63 types.[13]
  • The 64k ME Item Storage Cell has 65,536 bytes and holds 520,192 items with 1 type, or 266,240 with 63 types.[13]
  • The 256k ME Item Storage Cell has 262,144 bytes and holds 2,080,768 items with 1 type, or 1,064,960 with 63 types.[13]

Every cell tier holds 63 types, so rushing to the biggest cells costs more without giving you more type room. A full ME Drive holds 630 types. That's plenty, as long as you filter damaged, enchanted mob-farm gear out before it reaches your system.[13]

Import, export and priority

Import Buses push into network storage, Export Buses pull from it, and Interfaces and terminals do both. A Storage Bus is different: it turns the inventory it's attached to into network storage, so other devices push into and pull from it.[8]

You set priorities with the wrench icon in the top right of supported GUIs. Incoming items go to the highest-priority storage first. When two storages share a priority, items prefer the one that already contains them, and whitelisted cells count as already containing the item. Extraction takes from the lowest priority first, so high-priority storage fills up while low-priority storage empties.[5][8]

Autocrafting

Autocrafting has three parts: something that sends the request, a crafting CPU, and an ME Pattern Provider. The request can come from you in a terminal, or from an export bus or interface fitted with a Crafting Card. The system works out every sub-step and stores the job in the selected CPU. The provider then pushes the pattern's ingredients into the adjacent inventory, and the result has to return through a real item-entering-system event.[14]

Crafting CardMod recipe

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: ae2:materials/cardcrafting

Lets export buses and interfaces request crafts.

  • Crafting, Smithing Table and Stonecutting Patterns are automated by a Molecular Assembler next to a Pattern Provider. The provider sends the pattern along with the ingredients, the assembler ejects the result, and all three pattern types can share one setup.[14]
  • Processing Patterns cover furnaces and almost any modded machine. The system only cares that the specified result eventually comes back, not what happens in between.[14]
  • In a processing pattern, the primary result is what can be requested. Secondary results can't be requested directly, but they get used before stored items in multi-step recipes.[5]
  • Blocking mode stops a provider from pushing new ingredients while the target inventory still contains a pattern input.[5]
Watch out: Piping crafted results into a chest that has a Storage Bus on it does not count as the item entering the system. Return results with an import bus, an interface, or by pushing them back into a pattern provider. The planner also can't handle recursive recipes, such as duplication recipes, on its own.[14]
Tip: To order more of something you already have in stock, use your pick-block key (usually middle mouse) in the terminal. Inventory sorting mods can conflict with this.[14]

Certus quartz growth

Certus quartz buds grow on budding certus blocks, much like amethyst. Breaking an unfinished bud drops one Certus Quartz Dust. A fully grown cluster drops four Certus Quartz Crystal, and Fortune increases that. Budding blocks come in 4 tiers: Flawless, Flawed, Chipped and Damaged. You first find them in meteorites.[5][15]

Each time a bud grows a stage, imperfect budding blocks may drop a tier, eventually becoming plain certus quartz blocks. To repair them or make new ones, throw them in water with a Charged Certus Quartz Crystal. Flawless blocks never decay, but a pickaxe can't move them, even with Silk Touch. Silk Touch does reduce decay on the other tiers, and moving blocks with Spatial I/O causes none.[5][15]

Buds grow very slowly on their own, so build powered Crystal Growth Accelerators next to your budding blocks as a first priority. Covering more sides of a budding block slows its growth, and eventually that outweighs adding more accelerators. If you can't afford an Energy Acceptor or Vibration Chamber yet, a Wooden Crank works as a manual power source.[5][15]

How do you progress through Applied Energistics 2?

4 parts

In this pack, Applied Energistics 2 progression is tracked by two quests in the same chapter. a quest in "The Moon has Anvils" asks you to gather 32 Fluix Crystal, and a quest in "The Moon has Anvils" asks you to collect all four inscriber presses. Treat them as your two big milestones: first get a steady fluix supply, then get the presses that unlock the processor-based parts of the network.[3]

Tier 1: Fluix crystals

Your first goal is 32 Fluix Crystal for a quest in "The Moon has Anvils". This pack changed the Create mixing recipe for fluix, so check the in-pack version below instead of relying on an old video or wiki. It uses Charged Certus Quartz Crystal, so you'll want charged certus on hand before you start mixing.[3][6]

Tier 2: The Inscriber and the four presses

The next milestone is a quest in "The Moon has Anvils". It wants the Inscriber Silicon Press, Inscriber Logic Press, Inscriber Calculation Press and Inscriber Engineering Press. This quest comes after a rocket quest in the pack's Moon questline, so AE2's press tier is tied to your space progression.[3]

You'll need an Inscriber to work with the presses. Once you own a press, the Inscriber can copy it using an iron block, so you only have to find each press once.[6]

How does Applied Energistics 2 work with other mods?

6 parts

Most of the ways Applied Energistics 2 connects to other mods in this pack come from the MEGA addon. It builds bigger storage cells, crafting CPU parts and an energy cell on top of AE2 materials. There's also one Immersive Engineering recipe that the pack added, which produces Certus Quartz, and a couple of quests that ask for AE2 items.[3][6]

Certus Quartz from Immersive Engineering

The pack adds its own Immersive Engineering mineral mix that outputs Certus Quartz Crystal alongside TFC materials: Cryolite, Quartzite Gravel, Loose Quartzite Rock and Raw Quartzite. It takes no item inputs, so it isn't something you craft. Instead, it's a mineral source that has Certus Quartz among its outputs.[6]

Mineral Mix (immersiveengineering)

    Recipe id: immersiveengineering:mineral/certus_quartz

Unverified The sources don't say how you locate or extract this mineral mix, or how much Certus Quartz it gives compared to the other outputs.

    MEGA storage components

MEGA storage components come in tiers: 1M MEGA Storage Component, 4M MEGA Storage Component, 16M MEGA Storage Component, 64M MEGA Storage Component and 256M MEGA Storage Component. Every tier is a crafting table recipe that uses AE2 materials. From 4M upward, each one also builds on the component from the tier before it.[6]

    MEGA storage cells

To turn those components into usable storage, you'll want the MEGA Item Cell Housing and MEGA Fluid Cell Housing, and both are crafted with AE2 materials. There are item and fluid cells for every tier from 1M to 256M, such as 1M MEGA Item Storage Cell and 256M MEGA Fluid Storage Cell, and these also use AE2 parts.[6]

    Quests

Unverified The sources don't confirm where you obtain the Inscriber presses in this pack, or whether you have to reach the Moon to get them.

Which All the Mods - Gravitas quests use Applied Energistics 2?

    2 parts

Applied Energistics 2 shows up in one quest chapter in this pack, with two quests that ask for AE2 items. Neither quest has a title, so you'll recognise them by what they want you to hand in.[3]

Unverified The chapter's display name couldn't be confirmed, because the quest file only stores it as a translation key. Look for the chapter that contains the two quests below.

    Fluix Crystal quest

Quest a quest in "The Moon has Anvils" asks you for 32 Fluix Crystal. The quest file doesn't list a prerequisite for it, so you can work on it whenever you're ready.[3]

    Inscriber Presses quest

Quest a quest in "The Moon has Anvils" wants one of each of the four inscriber presses. Once you have all four, you can turn it in.[3]

This quest comes after a prerequisite quest that isn't part of this mod. In the pack's quest file, that quest belongs to the moon progression.[3]

Unverified Judging by its internal key, the prerequisite looks like a first-tier rocket quest on the way to the moon, but its actual title and requirements couldn't be confirmed.

Unverified The quest file doesn't link the Fluix Crystal quest and the Inscriber Presses quest to each other, so the order you're meant to do them in is unconfirmed.

Which Applied Energistics 2 config options matter?

If there's one AE2 mechanic you'll want to know about before you start building, it's channels. Devices on the same network can talk to each other, but the channel system limits how many devices you can connect to a single cable. That means your network layout takes some planning.[1]

Unverified We couldn't confirm how this pack sets any of AE2's config options, including channel behaviour, energy settings, spatial storage or crafting CPU settings, or whether the pack changed any of them from the mod defaults. Check your AE2 config in-game or in the pack's config folder before relying on a specific value.

What changed in Applied Energistics 2 between versions?

This pack ships Applied Energistics 2 version 11.7.6, from the file appliedenergistics2-forge-11.7.6.jar. The mod list shows it was first included in All the Mods - Gravitas 4.0 or earlier, so it has been part of the pack since at least this release.[2]

Unverified We don't have any pack changelog entries or mod changelogs for Applied Energistics 2 in this pack yet, so we can't say what changed between releases or how version 11.7.6 differs from earlier versions. Check the pack's release notes if you want the full history.
