The Aether is a mod in All the Mods 10 8.3, where it is version 1.5.10. The Aether Team presents: The original Aether mod! (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

Stuck? Why it might not be working

  • Zanite ring or pendant plus Eternal Stella: I can't mine anything
In All the Mods 10 8.2, read from the jars and not run in game: Eternal Stella removes an item's damage and max_damage components, and the Zanite Ring and Zanite Pendant mining speed formula divides by the item's max damage. With max damage at 0 that division reads as 0 / 0, which is NaN in Java float arithmetic, and a NaN mining speed gives no block-break progress. A report on pack 8.1 gives the symptom, every block feeling like bedrock, with Zanite accessories, and does not give the cause. Unequip the ring or pendant (not tested), and do not apply Eternal Stella to a Zanite accessory.
Checked against the versions in All the Mods 10 8.3.

What is The Aether?

1 part

The Aether adds a sky dimension full of floating islands, its own stone and wood, a set of gear tiers, mobs like Moas and Valkyries, and dungeons to clear. This pack ships The Aether 1.5.10 for NeoForge 1.21.1, and it has been in the pack since version 4.6 or earlier.[1][2]

It's a great fit if you want a self-contained exploration and gear path with its own quest chapter. That chapter walks you from your first Aether blocks up to the best tools and armor the mod offers.[2]

How the progression flows

Tip: Gravitite Ore isn't smelted. You enchant it at the Altar instead, so get Ambrosium flowing before you go looking for Gravitite.[2]

Unverified The sources don't show The Aether on the ATM Star quest path, so don't count on it as a required step for that goal.

How do you get started with The Aether?

6 parts

The pack's quest chapter "The Aether" has Skyroot, Holystone, Ambrosium, Zanite, the Altar and Gravitite as its early quests. Here is a sensible order to work through them.[2]

Skyroot tools

Skyroot is the only tree you'll find besides Golden Oak, and the Crystal Trees use Skyroot Log too. Start with a Skyroot Pickaxe, Shovel and Hoe. They are the same tier as wooden tools, so they can't break Iron or Zanite Ore. The upside is that each one doubles drops: the pickaxe doubles ores, the shovel doubles dirt and the hoe doubles plant drops. See "Skyroot Trees" quest and "Skyroot Tools" quest.[2]

The Skyroot Axe gives twice the logs from trees, and the Skyroot Sword gives twice the drops from mobs. Both are worth making early.[2]

Holystone tools

Holystone is the stone of the Aether and it's everywhere, but you need a pickaxe to mine it. Craft a Holystone Pickaxe next. It can mine Zanite but not Gravitite, and Holystone tools randomly drop Ambrosium Shards when you break blocks. See "Holystone" quest and "Holystone Tools" quest.[2]

Ambrosium

Ambrosium Shard is the coal of the Aether. Use it as furnace fuel or make torches out of it, and it is also the fuel for the Altar. You can smelt Ambrosium Ore into shards. See "Ambrosium" quest.[2][3]

Zanite

Smelt Zanite Ore to get a Zanite Gemstone. Zanite has far more uses than the earlier materials: tools, armor, and special items like the Nature Staff and the Altar. See "Zanite" quest.[2][3]

Smelting

Recipe id: aether:zanite_gemstone_from_smelting

If you use Create, the pack changes the crushing recipe for Zanite Ore. It gives Holystone, a Zanite Gemstone and a Nugget of Experience. The Ambrosium Ore crushing recipe is changed too, and gives an Ambrosium Shard, Holystone and a Nugget of Experience.[3]

Recipe id: create:crushing/compat/aether/zanite_ore

The Altar

The Altar enchants certain Aether items and repairs Aether or vanilla tools. Its enchanting doesn't use vanilla enchantments with books, it just transforms specific Aether items. Ambrosium is its fuel. See "Altar" quest.[2]

Gravitite

Gravitite Ore doesn't get smelted. Put it through the Altar to get Enchanted Gravitite, then make tools and armor from it. The Zanite Pickaxe can mine Gravitite, so make one first. See "Gravitite" quest.[2][3]

How does The Aether work?

3 parts

The sources for this mod cover a handful of utility blocks and a set of gameplay rules you can tune in the configs. They don't describe machine GUIs, processing, power or automation, so this section sticks to what they do show.[4]

Altar and Freezer

The utility blocks the sources mention are the Altar and the Freezer. The Altar is tied to an advancement where you use it to obtain Enchanted Gravitite. The Freezer is tied to an advancement where you use it with Icestone to freeze an accessory.[4]

Gameplay rules you can configure

A few options in the server config change how core mechanics behave. Here is what each one does.[4]

  • Armor abilities can be made to depend on wearing the matching gloves from an armor set, which is why items like Gravitite Gloves matter.[4]
  • Ambrosium Shard can be set to be edible, restoring a half heart of health.[4]
  • The Hammer of Kingbdogz and the Cloud Staff each have an ability cooldown measured in ticks.[4]
  • There is a cap on how many Life Shards a player can consume to raise their health, and the extra hearts can be drawn as silver.[4]
  • Vanilla beds can be set to explode in the Aether.[4]
  • On entering the Aether, players can be given a Book of Lore and Golden Parachute items as starting loot. On world creation they can also be given an Aether Portal Frame item to travel to the Aether.[4]

What the pack changes

The pack changes the crafting recipes for the Golden Pendant and the Golden Ring. Use these in-pack versions instead of what you may remember from the mod's defaults.[3]

The pack also sets the accessories button position to 10 on the x-axis in [[config:config/aether-client.toml#Gui.Button x-coordinate in accessories menu]] and 28 on the x-axis in [[config:config/aether-client.toml#Gui.Button x-coordinate in inventory menus]]. These control where the Aether's accessories button sits in those menus.[5]

[[config:config/aether-common.toml#Gameplay.Show Patreon message]] is set to false, so the message linking the mod's Patreon doesn't show. [[config:config/aether-startup.toml#Gui.Enables random trivia]] is also false, so you won't see random trivia and tips at the bottom of loading screens.[4][6][7]

How do you progress through The Aether?

5 parts

The Aether quest chapter walks you through a clear ladder: basic Skyroot and Holystone gear, then Zanite, then Gravitite, and finally the dungeon key rewards. Each step below follows the order the quests unlock.[2]

Tier 1: Skyroot

Start with Skyroot Log from Skyroot trees (Golden Oak is the only other tree, and it needs a special axe later). Skyroot tools are the same tier as Wooden Tools, so they can't break Iron or Zanite Ore. Their trick is doubled drops: the Skyroot Pickaxe doubles ores, the shovel doubles dirt and the hoe doubles plant drops. The Skyroot Sword doubles mob drops and the Skyroot Axe doubles logs.[2]

Tier 2: Holystone and Ambrosium

Holystone is the Aether's stone, and you need a pickaxe to mine it. Holystone tools randomly drop Ambrosium Shard when you break blocks. The Holystone Sword drops shards when hitting mobs, and the Holystone Axe drops them when chopping trees. The Holystone Pickaxe can mine Zanite but not Gravitite.[2]

Recipe id: aether:holystone_pickaxe

Ambrosium is the Aether's coal. You can make torches from it, burn it as furnace fuel, or use it as the Altar's fuel. Ambrosium Ore can be smelted or blasted into a shard. This pack also changes the Create crushing recipe for it, so crushing the ore gives a shard, Holystone and a Nugget of Experience.[2][3]

Tier 3: Zanite

Zanite Ore smelts or blasts into a Zanite Gemstone. The pack also changed the Create crushing recipe for it, which gives Holystone, a Zanite Gemstone and a Nugget of Experience.[3]

Zanite is a big step up in usefulness, since it unlocks the Altar and the Nature Staff, which commands tamed Moas. Zanite gear gets better as it wears down. The Zanite Sword starts around Iron Sword damage and hits harder the less durability it has. Zanite tools and the axe work faster as durability drops. The full armor set gives a total of 15 armor points.[2]

Tier 4: Gravitite

Gravitite Ore doesn't get smelted. You enchant it at the Altar, which uses Ambrosium as fuel, to get Enchanted Gravitite. Only a Zanite pickaxe can mine the ore; a Holystone one can't.[2][3]

Enchanting (aether)

Recipe id: aether:enchanted_gravitite_enchanting

  • Gravitite tools can be right-clicked on the blocks they break to blast those blocks into the sky, and they are the best tools the Aether has.[2]
  • The Gravitite Sword tosses whatever it hits into the air. The Gravitite Axe is the only way to cut down Golden Oak trees.[2]
  • Gravitite armor gives 20 armor points and 8 armor toughness. With all 5 pieces on (the gloves count) you leap instead of jumping and take no fall damage.[2]

Dungeon keys and rewards

After Gravitite, the quests follow the dungeon keys. Each key quest comes after the boss before it, and the gear quests come after the key.[2]

Tip: The Sun Altar can change the time in the Aether. If you set it to night, you can use a bed there to set your respawn point.[2]

How does The Aether work with other mods?

1 part

The clearest link between The Aether and another mod in this pack is furniture. The recipes that connect Aether items with items from other mods all turn Aether wood into decorative seats and display cases, so your sky builds can have matching furniture.[3]

Skyroot furniture

Every one of these recipes is marked as changed by the pack. Each color gets a full set: a display case, a seat, and small, flat, raised, fancy and tall seat backs. The colors in the recipes are black, blue, brown, cyan, gray, green, light blue, light gray, lime and magenta.[3]

For example, you can make Black Skyroot Seat and Blue Skyroot Display Case. All the other colors follow the same pattern.[3]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use The Aether?

3 parts

In this pack the mod's quests sit in one chapter, "The Aether". It starts with a set of basics that all unlock straight from the chapter's start. After that it branches into tool, weapon and armor lines, then into rewards tied to the dungeon bosses.[2]

The starting quests

These quests all unlock directly after the chapter start, so you can do them in any order. Each one asks you to obtain a single item, except Aerclouds, which wants three.[2]

Tools, weapons and armor

Each material then opens its own follow-ups. You only need one item from each "or" list to complete these quests.[2]

Dungeon keys and their rewards

The rest of the chapter follows the dungeon progression. The key quests are chained to boss quests, which are not among the quests I can reference here.[2]

  1. "Bronze Key" quest comes after The Slider and asks for the Bronze Key.[2]
  2. "Gold Key" quest comes after Sun Spirit and asks for the Gold Key. "Sun Altar" quest also unlocks after Sun Spirit and asks for the Sun Altar.[2]
  3. "10 Victory Medals" quest comes after Silver Dungeon and asks for Victory Medal. The quest says you must beat 10 Valkyries to fight the Valkyrie Queen.[2]
  4. "Silver Key" quest comes after Valkyrie Queen and asks for the Silver Key.[2]

Bronze Key unlocks these quests: "Hammer of Kingbdogz" quest, "Sentry Boots" quest, "Flaming Sword" quest, the untitled quest for the Cloud Staff, "Phoenix Bow" quest, "Shield of Repulsion" quest, "Neptune Armor" quest, "Lightning Knife" quest, "Valkyrie Lance" quest and "Swet Cape" quest.[2]

Gold Key unlocks "Iron Bubble" quest, "Life Shard" quest, "Pig Slayer" quest, "Vampire Blade" quest and "Phoenix Armor" quest. Phoenix Armor then leads to "Obsidian Armor" quest.[2]

Silver Key unlocks the last group: "Holy Sword" quest, "Valkyrie Cape" quest, "Regeneration Stone" quest, "Lightning Sword" quest, "Valkyrie Tools" quest, "Valkyrie Armor" quest and "Invisibility Cloak" quest.[2]

Tip: The Valkyrie Armor quest says wearing all 5 pieces lets you hold Space to fly for a short time. Don't forget the gloves, because the set only works complete.[2]

Which The Aether config options matter?

2 parts

The Aether has only a few options in this pack's config files, and they are all about messages and interface layout rather than gameplay. Here is exactly how the pack sets them.[5][6][7]

Messages and loading screens

  • [[config:config/aether-common.toml#Gameplay.Show Patreon message]] is set to false in this pack. This option decides whether a message linking the mod's Patreon is shown, so you won't see it.[6]
  • [[config:config/aether-startup.toml#Gui.Enables random trivia]] is set to false in this pack. When enabled, it adds random trivia and tips to the bottom of loading screens, so here your loading screens stay clean.[7]

Accessories button position

If you want to move the accessories button around, these are the client options to change. The pack sets them as follows.[5]

  • [[config:config/aether-client.toml#Gui.Button x-coordinate in inventory menus]] is set to 28 in this pack. It sets the x-coordinate of the accessories button in the inventory and accessories menus.[5]
  • [[config:config/aether-client.toml#Gui.Button x-coordinate in accessories menu]] is set to 10 in this pack. It sets the x-coordinate of the accessories button in the accessories menu.[5]

What changed in The Aether between versions?

The Aether has a short history in All the Mods 10. The pack changelogs record when it arrived and when it was last updated, and the pack file confirms where it stands in 8.1.[1][8][9]

  • All the Mods 10 4.6: The Aether was added to the pack at version 1.5.9.[9]
  • All the Mods 10 4.12: The Aether was updated from 1.5.9 to 1.5.10.[8]
  • All the Mods 10 8.1: The Aether is at 1.5.10, shipped as the NeoForge 1.21.1 build of the mod.[1]

Unverified The sources here don't include the mod's own changelogs for the shipped jars. That means what changed between 1.5.9 and 1.5.10, such as fixes, balance tweaks or new content, isn't shown, so check the mod's own release notes if you need those details.
