Zanite ring or pendant plus Eternal Stella: I can't mine anything

The short answer

  1. Unequip the Zanite Ring or Zanite Pendant (unequipping is not tested), and do not apply Eternal Stella to a Zanite accessory. That is the only step this page gives. Go to What to do.

  2. Read from code, not run in game: Eternal Stella removes the item's durability, and the Zanite mining speed formula divides by it. The formula is speed * (1.4 + damage / (max damage * 3)). With the durability gone, max damage is 0 and the division is 0 / 0. Go to What Eternal Stella does and Why the speed becomes NaN.

  3. The report matches that reading. A player on pack 8.1 describes mining stopping "as if every block is bedrock", only with Zanite accessories. Go to The report.

On this page

Applies to All the Mods 10 8.2, Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge, with The Aether 1.5.10 (aether-1.21.1-1.5.10-neoforge.jar) and Forbidden & Arcanus 2.6.1 (forbidden_arcanus-2.6.1.jar). The jars are the source. Nothing on this page was run in game.

The report

AllTheMods/ATM-10 issue 4429 is open. It was created 2026-09-24, against pack 8.1, with no comments. It says that applying Eternal Stella to a Zanite Ring or Zanite Pendant and equipping it means "not being able to mine whatsoever, as if every block is bedrock". It adds that this "only happens to the Zanite accessories, as they are related to mining speed", and that "every other item I've tested works fine".

The research read the 8.2 jars. It did not read pack 8.1's jars, so it cannot say 8.1 and 8.2 ship the same Aether and Forbidden & Arcanus builds.

What Eternal Stella does

Read from the Forbidden & Arcanus 2.6.1 data:

  • The smithing recipe apply_eternal_modifier has the type forbidden_arcanus:apply_modifier, the addition forbidden_arcanus:eternal_stella and the modifier forbidden_arcanus:eternal.

  • The item modifier eternal lists "components_to_remove": ["minecraft:damage", "minecraft:max_damage"]. So applying it removes both durability components.

  • Its predicate asks for an item that has both minecraft:max_damage and minecraft:damage.

  • Items on the tag #forbidden_arcanus:modifier/eternal_incompatible cannot receive it. In the Forbidden & Arcanus jar that tag holds minecraft:elytra. In 8.2 the pack's kubejs/server_scripts/Tweaks/tags.js (lines 102 to 113) adds ars_additions:undying_charm, four modularbees:electrode_* items, five Modern Industrialization hammers and #alltheores:ore_hammers. A Zanite Ring is not on that tag, so it is allowed to receive Eternal Stella in 8.2.

Eternal Stella is in play in 8.2. The Forbidden & Arcanus jar has a Hephaestus Forge ritual eternal_stella, and the pack's kubejs/server_scripts/modpack/runic_multis/recipes/auto_forge.js (lines 170, 172 and 186) uses forbidden_arcanus:eternal_stella as an input in its own recipes.

Why the speed becomes NaN

Read from the Aether 1.5.10 classes:

  • AetherItems declares zanite_ring as a ZaniteRingItem with durability(49), and zanite_pendant as a ZanitePendantItem with durability(98). Both carry max_damage and damage components, so both meet Eternal Stella's predicate. Item.Properties.durability sets those components. That is vanilla behaviour, and the research did not re-read it.

  • ZaniteAccessory.handleMiningSpeed(float speed, ItemStack stack) disassembles to speed * (1.4f + (float)getDamageValue() / ((float)getMaxDamage() * 3.0f)).

  • AbilityHooks$AccessoryHooks.handleZaniteRingAbility and handleZanitePendantAbility pass the mining speed through handleMiningSpeed for each equipped Zanite Ring and for the pendant.

Read from vanilla's ItemStack (server jar 1.21.1, class cuq):

  • getMaxDamage() is getOrDefault(MAX_DAMAGE, 0).

  • getDamageValue() is getOrDefault(DAMAGE, 0), clamped to the range 0 to getMaxDamage().

  • With both components removed, getMaxDamage() is 0 and getDamageValue() is 0.

So the formula reads 0.0f / (0.0f * 3.0f), which is 0 / 0, which is NaN. Then 1.4f + NaN is NaN, and speed * NaN is NaN. A NaN break speed gives no block-break progress, which matches "as if every block is bedrock". This chain is the research's inference from the code above, not an observation.

What to do

  1. Unequip the Zanite Ring or Zanite Pendant. The mining speed hook reads the accessories you have equipped.

  2. Do not apply Eternal Stella to a Zanite Ring or Zanite Pendant.
